Cayman now has 128 active COVID cases

Cayman Islands health worker conducts COVID-19 test

(CNS): After well over a year of not having to deal with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the community at all until last month, Cayman now has 128 active cases, the highest number here to date just four weeks after the return of local transmission. While some of those cases are travellers, the majority are transmissions that occurred in the community. There were another ten new local cases in Tuesday’s report, mostly staff and students at Clifton Hunter High School as well as First Baptist, the latest school to see an outbreak.

Dozens of families are now in isolation, most of them are doing well, but 55 people are said to be showing symptoms. The only admission to hospital remains the North Side woman who was the first person to have a confirmed case of community transmission in the re-emergence of the virus last month.

Five more travellers due to leave isolation were also positive in Tuesday’s report. Among the the 15 positive cases, three were vaccinated. They were among a batch of 1,232 test results released today.

As it moves towards managing the community transmission, Public Health is now cutting the isolation time for primary contacts of a positive COVID-19 case to 10 days where no one in the household is positive and provided that everyone in the family has been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to the contact with an approved vaccine.

CNS has received reports of some families that have been directed into isolation being told to come to work by their employers if they are not positive. However, Public Health has been clear that all primary contacts need to isolate for at least ten days even if they have had a negative test.

Chief Medical Offer Dr John Lee urged people to follow public health guidance about their release.

“If unvaccinated people, including children, are part of your household then you will need to continue to observe 14 days of isolation until being released following Public Health instruction. As we move forward with our reopening plans, this isolation period will be under constant review.”

Meanwhile, government has said it will continue to do what it can to help people who are placed in isolation and cannot work, especially the self-employed.

Vaccine numbers remain steady and 89% of those over 12 years of age have now had at least one shot, which means Cayman’s national rate is one of the highest in the world.

Let’s have anti-vaxxers sign a document that they WILL NOT seek medical assistance if sick so as not to overrun the healthcare system and not escalate the cost of health care to the rest of us.
Better still. Employers should charge for anti-vaxxers med ins or they only get the min by law. Many of the private employers offer excellent health coverage, so lets just offer it to those who are vaxxed.

What did you think was going to happen. It wasn’t eventually going to work it’s way through the country. All you did was hold it at bay while the rest of the world worked their way through it. Now as the planet is going through round 2 your just starting to have your first real go round. The best thing to do is embrace it and let it go it’s course. Then you’ll be ready to re open. Better to get through it faster. Delaying will only keep the country closed longer.
Government played it wrong people, god knows now you be closed up another year.

  3. No way says:

No way in hell I am sending my 10 yr old to school. All eligible persons in our household are vaccinated. I have no more sick days, nor vacation days. I do however have a mortgage. I am not losing my house, or job because some idiot politician wants to curry favour with anti vax voters.

  4. Dan Cayman says:

Bottom line everyone will get covid

    Unvaccinated and vaccinated spread equally

    Vaccinated have better protection

It’s a choice to get vaccinated so why discriminate to unvaccinated? There choice yo get sick.

Remember spreaders of the virus are

    Vaccinated and unvaccinated

Be realistic everyone will get it

    • A says:

Agree but the unvaccinated are restricting liberty and causing the quarantine and airport closure

    • Sick of lies says:

      Lie. That is patently false.

    • Anonymous says:

“Bottom line everyone will get covid” WRONG.

“Unvaccinated and vaccinated spread equally” WRONG. Vaccinated have much less viral load and are less likely to transMit the virus

      “Vaccinated have better protection” RIGHT.

“It’s a choice to get vaccinated so why discriminate to unvaccinated? There choice yo get sick.” WRONG. If you choose not to get vaccinated you increase my risk of infection.

“Remember spreaders of the virus are Vaccinated and unvaccinated.” MORE NUANCED THAN THAT. Vaccinated spread less due to less viral load.

“Be realistic everyone will get it.” WRONG. With this attitude and approach to this droplet spread respiratory disease, unfortunately, you are likely to become infected and infect others.

    • Anonymous says:

Such a shame that people repeat lies over and over again in hopes others will think its true. You really should be ashamed of yourself it that’s what you are doing, and if you’re just an idiot and has no idea well then there are no words…

  5. Anonymous says:

How many doses of booster did we receive, and how many have been distributed?
The number of cases is rising, so why the delay in distributing them to willing 50+ (as well as the vulnerable)?

  6. Anonymous says:

Presumably with this census starting soon, all the census workers knocking in doors will carry vaccination proof? I and everyone else I know certainly won’t be answering the door to anyone unvaccinated.

  7. Do not test! says:

If a child is not feeling well, they should remain at home until they are feeling better.

This rush to test is leading to shutting down of school, 14 imprisonment for hundreds of persons and will cripple our island in no time.

Simply do not test unless instructed by health authorities until they remove the draconian 14 day isolation for households that have one member who is a secondary contact.

Covid is here to stay, it will spread amongst families and schools with low level mild a – symptomatic spread. no need to close down to just delay the inventible.

Give boosters to all and learn to live with community spread.

    • Anonymous says:

Imprisonment? Give me a break (pun intended). What you call a draconian 14-day isolation is back up by the science as precautious to catch every single case where symptoms may emerge later. Your advice not to test is highly irresponsible.

      • Anonymous says:

Most countries just ask everyone to get tested. There are many vaccinated people being quarantined that do not have and will not develop covid. It’s just that their child happened to be in that class. It makes sense if you are trying to go for zero cases but that’s not realistic. Neither is expecting people to possibly quarantine multiple times if they have more than one child.

  8. Anonymous says:

Hundreds of people in cayman with the delta variant and surprisingly no one in hospital because the vaccines work! We knew that all along – time to open the borders fully with no quarantine for vaccinated. Despite all the conspiracy theorists on here, the educated amongst us always knew we’d be fine with an 80 per cent vaccination rate and knew the vaccines protect us.

  9. Anonymous says:

I don’t understand this. We stayed home and did lock down for nothing? Now, people want to spread their Covid every where and don’t want to isolate? Why? You all just waiting for someone to die? I bet the next person who dies, you all will keep your backsides home then. It shouldn’t have to come to that but that will be the only way you all will stop acting like those lunatic Trump followers.

  10. Anonymous says:

Let’s see how many will require hospitalization or get severely ill.

    • Anonymous says:

Thanks to our high vaccine uptake it will be low.

That is certainly the hope – and what other countries have seen!

Shut up. You have no idea. This is an RNA VIRUS always on the edge of mutating. We cannot drop our guard. We must do all we can to reduce the risk of transmission. I suggest you book a holiday in Bermuda. . . No? Why not?

        • Anonymous says:

I would book a trip to Bermuda. No problem. Not concerned re. Their covid numbers. I am triple vaxxed. The only thing stopping me is their policy on flights that if someone 2 rows surrounding me on a plane tests positive, then I would have to quarantine. I am not traveling anywhere that I have to quarantine unless of course, I would test positive, but I follow all covid safety protocols so feel my chance is extremely low. Never know about others and would not take the chance of someone one else ruining my holiday. THAT is the only reason I would not go to Bermuda. See, I am not afraid of covid and have learned to live in a world where covid exists.

          • Anonymous says:

Triple vaccinated? Nice! You tested your antibodies? No? Whoops, wonder if you are as protected as you think you are. I guess you’d also put on a triple flack-jacket and take a holiday to the Gaza strip!

    • Anonymous says:

Interesting experiment you propose – are all the people in it informed volunteers?

  11. Anonymous says:

Hospitalization rates remain low. That’s good. Hopefully it remains that way and people can get over their fear of this virus. The data always showed that the majority of people will suffer mild symptoms at worst and wouldn’t even know they had it at best. Those suffering from obesity, underlying health condition and/or are elderly were most at risk for hospitalization and I do sincerely wish them the best.

People who want to be vaccinated have chosen to do so as indicated by the 89% statistic so let’s see this play out. When this wave is over I’m hoping we can finally put some perspective on the virus and our reaction to it and start to move forward.

    • Anonymous says:

We never had a wave as we shut down.
So there’s a potential we will still get one with the unvaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

      Good comment.
But those who want the booster aren’t able to get it. Our levels of antibodies are falling, what happened to the plan for 50+ to get it from last week.

      • Anonymous says:

Ironically commercial carbon dioxide is in short supply and process increasing.

The boosters were delayed as there was a lack of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide), that is needed to keep to Vaccines cold during transport to Cayman.

CUC short build a CO2 capture for their diesel generators an then start to commercially sell it.

      • Anonymous says:

        Good question!

      • Anonymous says:

Look at the vaccine schedule on the HSA site. This week it is boosters for the critically vulnerable. Next week boosters are open to those 70+.

Wait your turn. You want these groups to go first.

        • Anonymous says:

          Why?
Why not set aside some booster for this group and take it to them .. several I have spoken to are afraid of leaving their house.
Simultaneously begin giving the booster to 50+ so as to curb the spread of Delta!
Why do we have to wait, have we learned nothing from the vaccine rollout fiasco?!

So does the woman in hospital still have Covid? Indeed it’s been some time now. She didn’t go into hospital because of Covid, she just happened to have it. What’s the truth? Why even ask for the truth? (I’m vaccinated, so don’t lay any anti-vaccine/ conspiracy theorist label on me!)

They should fire them. That’s on PACT, not the employers. They are government’s problem now.

  24. Anonymous says:

For goodness sake!! Stop all the testing – unless someone has symptoms. All these people locked down are likely asymptomatic. How about stop reporting numbers as well? All it does is to frighten people who don’t really understand it all. I guarantee, if people weren’t having statistics shoved down their throats and the testing swab up their nose, numbers would be way down and people would be less paranoid. It’s not the end of the world if a large number of people get ill – it’s unlikely they’ll end up in hospital. I suspect if the numbers of people getting a cold were being advertised, people would be fretting about the need to keep the borders closed then.

    • Anonymous says:

Locking up healthy vaccinated people in their homes because they may have come in contact with a covid case? Sorry CIG this is plainly and simply unlawful, has no place in a free and democratic society. Covid ceased being a public health crisis when we got to our vaccine targets, and so did your emergency powers. It’s only a matter of time until this latest abuse of rights ends up in the courts. CIG will lose, as they always do when they abuse their powers.

Would you like to make a wager on any court agreeing with you? I would be happy to take your money.

Now the vaccinated is crying about overreaching policy. Oh, the irony. If people do not realize that the erosion of any one group’s freedoms lead to the erosion of everyone else’s freedoms they are in for a big surprise. What’s next? Are they going to start kicking in doors to haul people away to government quarantine facilities? The legislation provides the RCIPS with those powers. Where do we draw the line?

    • Anonymous says:

Freedoms and rights in a society come with OBLIGATIONS. You may be young, fit, and healthy and most likely to avoid serious illness, but there are other around you that may not fare so well. Quarantine, isolation following contact-tracing are standard procedures to avoid the rapid transmission of a communicable disease. Reaching vaccine targets does not stop Covid-19 being a public health crisis. Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your fellow citizens to help prevent them avoid being infected with SARSCoV-2, and start by stop moaning about standard precautionary procedures.

      • Anonymous says:

Beautifully said. I agree 100%. Obligations instead of freedoms.

  26. Anonymous says:

At one point do we get to stop this silly quarantine business? The faster the virus gets through the population the faster we can move on. If I have any symptoms I am for sure not telling anyone. Why do you think the cases are being found out at schools? Because they force the kids to get tested…no one else is going forward to be tested if they have the sniffles.

We thought the island was friendly and now, sadly, we are seeing the true colors come out.

We are a family of five, all vaccinated and stayed at the Marriott, the Westin and have many happy memories thru the years.

There are those that are unvaccinated included in the report above however we only have the 1 hospitalization. Why do you still think not being vaccinated is an automatic trip to the ER? Could it happen? Sure, but do you seem to think it is only outcome?

The data has always and still shows that the majority of those who get C-19 will have mild symptoms at worst and will never know they even had it at best. Those with obesity, diabetes and other various health conditions are at greater risk of severe symptoms, so we need to take that into account IF we start to see hospitalizations/deaths start to rise but going off of the numbers we have already there is not reason to assume the worst right off the bat.

This fear of the virus is truly baffling.

That’s possible, but bear in mind that everyone who got on a plane in the last year or so had to have PCR test before flying. Odds are that if Covid had “always been” in Cayman, one of those travellers would have tested positive. Since they didn’t, I think it’s safe to say that the island actually was Covid free until very recently when returning travellers started breaching quarantine rules.

I totally agree. Our Government has completely lost its mind. This is dystopian level crazy. Are we going to lock down everyone? This is not logical nor sustainable. We went from we are opening up, to we are Henry the 8th beheading Anne Boleyn in 0 to 60 seconds.

And this is exactly how we got into this mess in the first place. Entitled people thinking they were too special and important to have to quarantine on trust when required to do so. You think its OK to potentially be infected with covid and just go about your business infecting others everywhere you go?
It’s because of people like you that I am now housebound and cannot go out since we had community transmission return to Cayman. My compromised immune system and heart condition likely wouldn’t survive it, even if I am vaccinated. So thanks very much. You enjoy your selfish freedom. Keep your fingers crossed that no one you infect dies.

All the healthy people who have their lives and the lives of their dependents, need to put everything on hold so that you can feel comfortable in going outside. I feel for you being ill and being of high risk with this virus but don’t call the rest of us selfish. It is you who wants the world to wait on you. Meanwhile, I still have mouths to feed and useless businesses to work for in order to provide for my family.

Get used to the world not playing out in your favour. Many people were born in some f#cked up parts of the world that didn’t choose it either and using your situation to guilt trip the rest of us just makes you come across as self-centered and selfish.

I’ve accepted that my father will probably get the shit end of the stick if he catches covid but I’m not walking around begging everyone else to stop their lives to accomodate me. I live with that fear and possible outcome and so has he. Learn to manage the emotion, make the most of your life so far. It’s a horrible feeling to have the thought of death looming around you, however asking the world to stand still for you is not going to make you feel any better about it.

If your father is vaccinated then he has a good chance of not being hospitalized or dying from Covid

So our isolation guidance has moved from bat-chit crazy to merely insane.

Nice always good to see progress.
