(CNS): The Cayman Islands national vaccination rate is closing in on the 80% target, as Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee revealed Friday that 79% of the population has now had at least one dose. According to the latest figures, 55,819 people have had their first shot and 53,421 people, or 75% of the population based on the estimate of over 71,000 people, have had both shots. Meanwhile, active COVID cases hit another new high Friday with an additional 15 people testing positive for the virus. 198 people are currently infected with the coronavirus.

So far, 890 (5% of those over the age of 50) have had a third or booster dose. The Vaccination Clinic has opened its next phase of booster shots for those aged 60 and over as well as for healthcare workers. The clinically vulnerable remain eligible to receive boosters throughout all phases of the programme.

The third dose of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is available for people who are clinically vulnerable (see here for details) and who finished their two-dose course at least six months ago. They should bring along their vaccination card or digital certificate showing proof of their second dose and a government issued photo ID.

The primary vaccination clinic is now at the Lions Centre Tuesday – Friday, with additional district locations on Thursdays. This Thursday, 21 October, there will be an evening clinic between 5-7pm in Prospect at #33 Marina Drive. Next Thursday, 28 October, the evening clinic will be at the West Bay Health Centre.

Saturday vaccine clinics will resume next week on 23 October at a new Camana Bay location upstairs at Canella Court, adjacent to the observation tower. Elevator access and directional signage will be available for the new clinic location.

Why COVID boosters weren’t tweaked to better match latest variants.

There are VOC boosters that sought FDA EUA last month, but they didn’t use a large enough sample group. Moderna’s was only 300 people and only 12 over 60. They were told to redo it.

I waited because I was forced into it. I would still not have taken the shot(s), but there’s this little thing about employment and feeding my family.

I have compromised immunity, which at the beginning was noted on the admissions form as being excluded. In the fervor to make everyone take one for the team, that language was dropped, and now only having previously had an allergic reaction to an injection is considered reason for not taking the Pfizer vaccine.

and YOU have the gall to call me “selfish”, where you support others making a choice for me. I wonder what choices should be forced upon you to make my life better.

It’s your choice to stay here and work. Don’t want the vaccine, time to find work less where

    • Anonymous says:

Actually, it’s now no different than all of the other fully-approved vaccines required to work or go somewhere. Hopefully some mRNA vaccine pipeline for Zika and Chikungunya coming too.

As if to illustrate that nobody is bulletproof, Colin Powell, double vaccinated, has just died from complications due to the delta variant. The Covid-19 vaccinations definitely help a lot, but a single dose or even double dose plus 2 weeks, is not necessarily fully-inoculating our population from illness or death against the mutated threat that is now circulating.

We need to recalibrate our expectations based on realtime data, not surrender to our fatigue with more convenient theatre and assumptions from 6 months ago. The focus on this antiquated 80% target doesn’t mean much anymore with delta.

Yes, we can reopen in November, but we also need to mask/distance/wash hands/reduce group sizes, and be conscientious. With delta breakthrough cases at 40% or more, that’s not living in fear, that’s just being responsible and proactive against the current adversary.

colin powell was 84. stop fear mongering. many people will die with covid not because of covid.

      • Anonymous says:

16% of Bermuda dead were fully vaccinated, as are 44% of their active cases. That’s not fear mongering, those are their stats. It’s possible to be both vaccinated AND careful, esp knowing there are vulnerable grownups that are old, or sick with something else. We don’t need to hasten their departure simply because some younger people want to go into reckless super-spreader mode.

And had a blood cancer. Insane these people leave out the big details to just fear monger.

        • Anonymous says:

I think it’s more accurate to say people are pointing out the hypocrisy. If Powell were unvaccinated, you’d never hear about the cancer.

    • anon says:

8.47am You also need to use realtime data, not tailor it to suit your argument. Colin Powell was 84 and suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease so he was paricularly vulnerable even after vaccination.

      • Anonymous says:

The takeaway should be that we need to be collectively thoughtful and vaccinated. Not rationalize and bargain that old and/or sick people have had sufficient time, or somehow have it coming, for the reason that young people can’t be bothered to mask any more.

    • Anonymous says:

Imagine how much worse it could have been was he wasn’t vaccinated!

      • Anonymous says:

Goes to show how easy it is to get people to go along with complete trash. I posted the above, and it is complete sarcasm. The man is dead! It could not have been any worse! the whole point of the vaccine is to prevent death. What the media is not telling you is that the man was also battling cancer. So far 4 sad pro-vaxxers that jump at any chance to push the mainstream narrative and fear.

    • Anonymous says:

Colin Powell was in treatment for cancer (multiple myeloma). This type of cancer suppresses the immune system. So 84, and fighting cancer, made him extremely vulnerable.

8:47 it is so sad to know there are so many people with the belief, that once you take the Covid-19 Vaccine, you should
      not die!

we have protected the most vulnerable from a long time ago. it doesnt matter if we make 80,85 or 90% from here on…it’s irrelevant.
time top open the borders fully to the vaccinated.
it’s a only a pandemic for the unvaccinated from here on. restrict their movements, keep them safe, prtoect our health service.

With the definition of vaccine being changed by the CDC. The WHO stating that the ‘herd immunity figure is now unknown. It is no wonder conspiracy theories evolve. ‘Follow the science’ they say, while not following it themselves e.g. incubation period and quarantine. This is very much a ‘suck it and see’ programme to see what happens. Anyway, winter is upon us and I am about to book my flu shot or is it now flu vaccine?

CNS: ‘Shot’ is just slang for ‘vaccine’. As for the CDC definition, this is the latest anti-vax conspiracy theory doing the rounds on social media. They appear because right wing numbnuts make shit up. See Vaccine skeptics claim a new CDC gotcha moment

Here’s an interesting article: Herd immunity: why the figure is always a bit vague

    • Anonymous says:

HSA doesn’t have flu shots yet.

    • Anonymous says:

There several issues in play here.
Herd immunity in regard to a Corona virus is at best a pipe dream. If the CDC were totally forthright, they would have been saying that the herd immunity figure for C19 is now “unknown” because it has never been “known” in the first place. It has always been a wishful best guess based on formulae which are often very complex with many variables. The CDC DID in fact change their use and description/definition of “immunity” on at least one of their pages but this was to make the definition comply more closely to the Science and NOT to allow for C19 realities. The problem with the first definition I saw is that a lot of tin hat “numbnuts” (as CNS calls them) have no idea of the clinical definition of “immunity”. So the change was toward more clarity. Immunity in simple terms means a degree of protection against a disease. NO immunity is 100% effective in preventing infection (not even natural immunity), although many numbnuts (NN’s)insist that a vaccine that does not offer 100% immunity is a failure. Those same NN’s do not seem to realise that NO pharmaceutical approach is 100% effective for 100% of the treated population against any disease or malady. By that NN 100% token all pharmaceuticals are failures. But we who possess sound reasoning ability know better. The top tier C19 vaccines offer a quite good degree of protection against mortality and morbidity.

How is this possible I thought we would never reach 75% now we are at 79%.

    So many was wrong.

  8. Anonymous says:

On one side we report high percent vaxed. Next minute afraid to open up. Vax helps getting severely ill but cant protect from transmission.
Let us open up. Follow boarding clearence similar to usa as most of our visitors from there. Do lateral flow testing on arrival. Isolate the positive and quarantine any negative with fever. Others no quarantine.
We will not 100 percent prevent but will learn to live with it.

  9. Anonymous says:

One of the highest rates isn’t he world, so open up, drop vaccinated quarantine and these mask rules and let’s move on like the real world.

It’s truly amazing! Never underestimate the power of fear of control and loss of personal freedoms. I was one of those who just got jabbed. I resent all of you cheerleaders who applaud the draconian government. I am about to lose my employment and have no choice, because that has also been taken from me.

I hope and pray we all get that which we deserve. ALL of us.

Why did you wait so long? Vaccines have been here since February. Madness to wait 9 months and selfish.

      • Anonymous says:

Here we go with “selfish” again. laughable.

      • Anonymous says:

The selfish card is mindlessly over-used. The wait may be a prudent one considering how long it took to go from the emergency use nod to full FDA approval. I certainly waited until the FDA had analysed all the data to that time and the Pfizer vax gained full FDA approval. We could also pull the dog-eared “selfish” card and say anyone who would denigrate anyone else for not taking a pharmaceutical that is not fully approved is foolishly arrogant and equally selfish. Since shortly after full approval I have had my two jabs and thus far have had zero side effects. Being reasonably unselfish, I try to maintain social distance, sanitise my hands frequently and mask up while out in public.

    • Anonymous says:

@4:22 You have a choice, get another job, plain and simple. I will bet though you are an expat that realizes that the jab is far better than returning to your home country.

Why in the world would you get vaccinated if you didn’t want to? If you were that committed you would have looked for a new job or taken your ass home..Something tells me this is just for show and you are just doing your best to spread disinformation.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes, you caught me, by golly. Can’t put anything past you. Can’t expect any of you totalitarian cheerleaders to accept even a morsel of responsibility for your mob behaviour, or consider that your riding roughshod over a few people isn’t just collateral damage. I hope you get your long-awaited vaycay.

You, Sir, are an asshole. I hope we both get that which we deserve.
