CMO Dr John Lee

(CNS): Contact tracing and testing continued Wednesday in relation to a case of community transmission of COVID-19 at the George Town Primary School, where another seven students tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total to eight. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee that all the children were asymptomatic except for the first child diagnosed, who was doing fine.

Altogether there were nine more locally transmitted cases Wednesday, which included the children plus two adults who were found to be primary contacts, which brings the total of community transmissions to 17 cases in two separate outbreaks, spanning 12 households with no travel connections.

Of the eight children from GTPS who tested positive, five are from Year 6, one from Year 5 and two from Year 4, none of whom have a travel history.

One of the adults testing positive today is understood to be the healthcare worker at the East End Clinic but it is not clear if that person is connected to the GTPS outbreak or the first community transmission, which is understood to be in North Side.

Overall there appears to be now 43 active cases of the virus among people in isolation including travellers as there were two more people in quarantine who tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday after the HSA ran 1,752 tests on Tuesday.

People awaiting tests relating to GTPS outbreak or those who are positive must remain in isolation until told otherwise, officials said. The school will remain closed school Thursday.

Meanwhile, the first person to test positive in the community remains in hospital but the CMO said she was stable and although unwell, as she was when admitted to hospital, she is not requiring oxygen to help her breathe.

These two separate community outbreaks have served to stimulate the vaccination levels. Currently, 53,934 people or 76% of the population, have had at least one dose and 71% (50,370 people) are fully vaccinated.

Stop closing schools for “ in an abundance of caution due to Covid”.Students not feeling well, stay home and get tested. Those who test positive, stay home and quarantine. Contact trace to those positives and the rest go to school!!!!!!!! The whole school does not need to stay home. Follow and trust in the Covid guidelines.

If 7 days isn’t enough time to stop community spread, then why 7 days? If it is enough to stop community spread then what’s the point of getting vaccinated?

The most worrisome places re. Covid is the prison system, nursing homes, and the hospitals. Just read about covid in the prison. Would mandate all prisoners/prison staff to get the jab. Same with nursing homes /elderly and hospital staff. Once covid gets in those high populated areas, very hard to stop the circulation.

Everywhere else, get vaccinated. Masks when you can’t social distance. Hand washing. The border can and should be open. Only quarantine those positive w/ covid. The rest can move about their daily routine.

Cayman tourism done for a long, long time due to this reopening change. People thought it was really going to happen this time with the new government laying out the phased plan. Backing out, adding days to quarantine for something that is here to stay shows it was just done out of fear. No reopening date in sight. Starting at phase 3 in January still has a quarantine shows people that the real reopening is far into next year. No one will put money down on a trip because now no one believes any date put out there.
        What a farce.

Just test at the other schools and see if the kids have anti-bodies. you’ll see that a substantial number of kids had or have COVID. A lot of kids had ‘colds’ over the last 3 weeks. COVID is here to stay. That’s why you have vaccines. The government should start to use the correct population count of 65,000. The government does not understand the statistical terms of standard deviations and confidence intervals. A government that is panicking destroys livelihood of many people and makes life miserable for many.

These Islands have not had to bury thousands of bodies due to Covid-19. We have not had Nurses and Doctors falling down from exhaustion or patients unable to receive the needed oxygen tanks to enable them to breath.

We have not had entire families die or children orphaned from this pandemic. We have existed in our little bubble with the mentality that Covid-19 is not so bad or indeed is a made up scare tactic.

All those who are angry with the Premier and the new PACT government and crying out in anger for our borders to open, be careful what you wish for. The vaccine is NOT 100% effective against transmission of the virus so please do not get complacent.

I agree that this pandemic is not going away any time soon and that community transmission was inevitable. That said there is still the need for caution in our tiny little nation of The Cayman Islands, a country of which I am so proud.

Make good decisions and stay safe….PLEASE

  8. anon says:

Interesting news from the UK regarding children and young adults any dont forget the vast majority of children in the UK have not been vaccinated and yet they have the anti bodies which probably means they have already had covid !! that makes this decision stupid to say the least.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9997271/Almost-90-16-24-year-olds-Covid-antibodies-official-data-suggests.html

CNS: You read this bit and not just the headline, right? “The presence of coronavirus antibodies suggests someone has been infected in the past or has been vaccinated. But they are not a perfect measure of whether a person is protected against Covid. Other parts of the immune response are involved in fighting the virus, such a T-cells.”

  9. Say it like it is says:

If all these adults had been vaccinated we would not be in this situation. This sounds like Delta so all our anti vaxers are going to have serious health problems.

    • Anonymous says:

clearly, my two sense is needed here.

My fellow Caymanians ….. The “vaccine” does not stop the spread of the virus, it only helps reduce the amount of hospitalized patients. Therefore, you can still spread COVID to your unvaccinated children and to vaccinated adults the same way you would if you were not vaccinated. This foolishness about take the vaccine to protect your families is garbage. Take the vaccine so that you do not become severely sick and die, and also so that we don’t overflow our healthcare facilities. THE VACCINE DOES NOT PROTECT ANYONE BUT THE PERSON WHO TOOK IT. To put the cherry on the top, it will only work for 10-12 months, hence the boosters.

      You’re welcome!

Masks are a part of life but people can move about freely. COVID exists everywhere and there are lots of cases, but people are vacc’d and life goes on.

The government is just unnecessarily delaying the inevitable and putting additional stress on families already struggling.

I know that nobody cares about expats, but there are a lot of them here that contribute greatly to this country. They need to be able to go home and/or have visitors for their sanity.

      • Jotnar says:

        Because:

        1. the quarantined people come in contact with Caymanians who dont quarantine – quite apart from the breachers, there are the flight crews, the airport staff, the taxi drivers that take them to quarantine, the staff in the quarantine facility and the HSA staff doing the exit screening. Sooner or later it will leak out from the quarantine bubble.

        2. There are people entering the country illegally, who don’t quarantine

        3. Because if you don’t let the white collar expats the financial services sector depends on travel, they will start leaving/refusing to be based here. Plenty of other offshores they can be based in with lo to zero tax, nice lifestyle and the ability to travel. FS is the main thing keeping our economy going.

        4. If you don’t let the FS people travel to market cayman and service clients, the FS will start to leak business to other jurisdictions where that is not an issue.

Give us your number in each category. 1? 2? 5? 10? 20? What? This is where the rubber meets the road. Your answer is?

This is ridiculous. What was the point in the UK wasting vaccines on us and having a reopening plan if we are just going to panic and not proceed with the plan over a few community cases.

Cayman is becoming a huge embarrassment. COVID going nowhere – do we stay closed forever? What difference does it make opening the borders in October 2021 or October 2025! This is shocking leadership.

When will people realise Cayman is now over a year delayed vs other countries in appropriately dealing with this? Why is there not a widespread self-testing programme and vaccine passports? Disgraceful.

I swear all you reopen people do no reading at all. You talk and have no clue what you are talking about. READ DAMN IT READ before typing anything.

It’s not the 5 or 10 cases we are worried about. This batch will not put 50 to 100 in a hospital. It’s the next stage. Do you think we have all the people infected? Do you realize we still do not know who was patient zero in either group? Do you know what that means? It mean there is someone maybe multiple people in our community walking around with the virus as we speak infecting others. 7 to 10 days from now it sets in. Then we start to see people showing up.

Everyday is a day when anywhere between 5 and 10 new people are infected and we don’t know. These people take time to show symptoms or pass it on.

You see the government knows this but you do not realize what’s coming. You think it’s panic by the government. You just too naive to see what’s next.

  19. Kevin says:

There are numerous flaws in Dr. Lees statements about infections namely the 6ft and 15 mins.

This theory to virus safety comes from the 1800’s can you believe that?? Let’s address them.

Covid spreads via an aerosol style approach. There have been studies showing virus droplets traveling up to 6 to 8 metres. https://www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3223

Next point is the 15 mins. A simple cough or sneeze by someone and in 5 to 10 seconds covid can be transferred.

The problem with operating by the theory is that you eliminate potential carriers of the virus artificially. Then days later you get another spread and you wonder why.

If are to not just snuff this spread out or any future spreads we need to be operating by more updated guidelines.

I am not against reopening but I am against reopening stupidly because people screaming with no thought process.

No one wants to lose a child or an elderly family member. And most certainly no politician wants to lose his job in 3 years time. This is where we are at and until we learn how to fight this and effectively we SHOULD LOCK DOWN.

    Learn or suffer.

Otherwise the real fear we ought to have is how far we will decline as a country. We cannot take expats, Caymanians with families abroad for granted. We cannot assume money will always be there to pay our civil service. We cannot assume people will continue to buy properties that they cannot visit. The list goes on and on. Does there need to be a little more clarity on our approach to reopening the borders?

If we are going to close schools and keep parents and children home whenever a test returns a positive result then this whole thing is going to quickly get out of control. If reopening the borders is not also an understanding that the virus will get introduced into the community and that there is a small possibility that some people will get sick and maybe even die then you might as well just keep the borders closed and the suppression measures in place.

The decision is to accept the risk associated with the virus or the costs of keeping the borders somewhat restricted and the suppression measures in place. I don’t see where there is any other options.

    • Anonymous says:

I’m totally confused with all of this. What was the vision of the opening in October? Community spread was going to happen, but it just happened a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated. If there had been no local Covid transmission and we opened our borders in October we would undoubtedly have seen local transmission within a few weeks. We planned to open the borders because most people would be vaccinated and less likely to suffer life threatening illness. Children would have still been unvaccinated. Cayman has done everything that can be done to protect its people. We cannot hide away from this disease forever by keeping our borders closed and going into lock-down whenever someone catches the disease. I do not see the local cases as something we should run in fear of. We can all minimize our own risk by facemasks and good hygiene but as a country we need to accept we will eventually have to deal with it within Cayman. Personally I would rather catch it sooner than later before it mutates into something worse than the Delta variant

This is the first time I believe that there has been a large sudden outbreak, no one can accurately predict what the next couple of weeks will bring. Cayman has done so well, but now err on the side of caution – keep lockdown in place for a couple of weeks to see what happens. If nothing, okay open up. But if it gets worse, then you made the right choice.

Oh no let’s freak out. Oh no too late, oh no Dr Lee is a puppet of the UK. Oh no Wayne and team have zero experience.

Time for mask mandates in all schools. We have to protect our children.

    • Anonymous says:

Where are the mandates for the flu and the other health issues, and issues affecting the country, such as; fast food mandate, sugary food mandate, alcohol mandate, poverty mandate, crime mandate, etc,

      • Anonymous says:

yeah Burger King and Pepsi two biggest viruses on island spreading like crazy..really eating junk food or drinking alcohol is a choice. Getting covid isn’t..idiot

      • Anonymous says:

It would actually make a lot of sense to wear masks during flu season… many countries do this.

    • Anonymous says:

Next month we will have mask mandates in schools. Just waiting for a couple of kids to die.

Very sad but true. Only way to wake stupid people up.

They must increase the prizes and money to incentivize people to get the vaccine. It’s only solution

  45. Anonymous says:

I do believe the vires came in by ocean!!!!!!!. Just my take.

  46. Anonymous says:

Are other schools being tested to see if this is more widespread? Is there a common connection between these kids/families?

  47. Anonymous says:

We are doomed now, Covid is everywhere.
Urgently get Honorable Alden and Honorable Seymour back in power as they are the only people who can control this disaster.

7 children with covid should be placed in quarantine and whomever else tests positive. The rest of the students continue with their education. The reopening plan should stay on task. No need to be changing the plan. Covid not going anywhere. What is the difference between October, November, December or next year? Covid will still be here.

    • Anonymous says:

Our children would be vaccinated by then.

      • Anon says:

        (1) No they would not
        (2) children do not need to be vaccinated. None of these kids even know they had it.

        • Anonymous says:

Children DO need to be vaccinated. In the United States they have children who are dying from the Delta variant of COVID.

          • Rabbie Burns says:

Two in a million infected children require hospital treatment, you ignorant person . The so called Delta variant is supposed to be more infectious, but it is weaker. How do you not know this. Try looking at the stats, instead of listening to CNN

    • Anonymous says:

No NO NO – we must seal up and lock down. Covid will leave because we will starve it out.

      • Sheriff says:

@9:13 do you really believe we can starve out Covid if we “seal up and lockdown?” In order for that to happen the border would have to be completely closed, with no access for ANYONE to leave and return for any reason. At what point would you propose we reopen? After everyone is held captive here long enough to get rid of Covid on this island? Then open? And when that happens guess what comes in? COVID. That’s right, it isn’t going anywhere, at some point it will become endemic, just like the flu, but it is not going to be irradicated from the world. The truth is we will have to live with it.

Or maybe your comment should be taken as sarcasm?

Should not all primary contacts of a positive person also be isolated for 14 days? During that time they may test positive themselves and would otherwise have been at large in the community causing further spread.
So if my wife tests positive for example and I do not (yet), should I be allowed to carry on life as normal, going to work, going to the shops, school etc until I get a negative test? How many people will I have infected in the meantime?

    • Anonymous says:

Send children to quarantine on their own? False positive tests? Are they ill? Hospitalised? Let’s have facts rather than speculation and panic!

    • Anonymous says:

You understand your proposal would leave hundreds with Covid, within, 10 days?

    • Kurt ma says:

what’s the difference? hopefully vaccination rates amongst children….

    • Anonymous says:

Do you understand the concept of incubation periods? Your approach would be masterful, if spreading the virus were the aim. Thankfully, that is not the aim.
