PPM leader calls for rethink on reopening plan

Opposition Leader Roy McTaggart on the border reopening plans

(CNS): The opposition is calling on government to re-think its plans to lift quarantine requirements next month. In a video message on Thursday, PPM Leader Roy McTaggart said the environment had changed since June, when his party was urging government to open up. Following news of the suspected community transmission of COVID-19, he took to social media and said there was “a strong argument that we should look again at what is the appropriate time to open”.

In a short statement made before the two cases of community transmission of the coronavirus were confirmed, the opposition leader criticised PACT for not keeping the opposition members updated and urged the government to “give careful thought to whether it would not be prudent to hold back on reopening”.

He said he still believed that the five-day quarantine was too short because it doesn’t give sufficient protection, since the virus has an incubation period of about 14 days.

“The Delta and MU variants make this situation worse, and this should be reconsidered,” McTaggart said. “When in government, we agreed to 10-day quarantine but no shorter. In addition, doing away with the GPS wristbands for those quarantining at home should also be reconsidered.”

McTaggart said there was increased concern about opening up on 14 October and accused government of making things worse by not updating the country regularly and “give comfort to the public that the government had the situation in hand”.

He denied that the PPM was “a part of an undercurrent of political interference” trying to distract the government and said Premier Wayne Panton was wrong to suggest that, but maintained that the opposition was correcting the government where it was failing.

“We are the government that took this country through the dark days of lockdown, and we understand better than most the seriousness of this disease and our obligation to assist this government where we can on matters that benefit the country and to point out where they are going wrong,” McTaggart said.

With the changed environment regarding the pandemic, he said, any plans made a few months ago, whether by the government or the opposition, must be re-examined.

“We will continue to support the government’s call for people to get vaccinated,” the opposition leader said.

However, accusing the government of failing to keep the opposition informed, he said he was going to write to Public Health requesting that the opposition receive regular updates on the COVID-19 situation to better understand the risks and help make better-informed decisions on how best to support the government.

“When we were in government, we made a concerted effort to keep the opposition leader updated,” he added.

Most adult residents are vaccinated. The hospitals have 42 ventilators. Sooner or later we have to open the borders and when we do Covid will come in. I would rather we were exposed to it sooner than later; it is mutating all the time and who knows what the next strain will be like. Its time to roll the dice and get back to normal life. Yes there will be cases but the island could not be any better prepared. We cannot continue to hide from the inevitable fact Covid will come here.

If the PPM would have been more transparent with the public, which kept a connection with the people, then it would be more believable that the now Leader of the Opposition cares — butthat was not the case.

Roy is not sincere and does not care about regular Caymanians — he (just like Alden, Joey and Moses) is an elitist. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians (just Jon Jon, Barbara and David).

Require double vaccination for all incoming passengers. Check what France just implemented for incoming US citizens.

That’s great 12:10. What do you think, could the same apply here if there was an outbreak with our limited healthcare facilities ? In the Southern US such facilities have set up a Facebook network to see who has capacity to accept patients if a certain facility can’t take them themselves already at max capacity.

What’s happening in the UK or anywhere in the world can certainly be looked at as a potential model but to laud anything as international practice/protocol would be highly irresponsible.

      • Anonymous says:

That is because the southern US states have low vaccination rates (Florida 55%, Georgia 43%…..). That is the tool to minimize hospitalizations.

Unless we are to stay closed forever?

  7. Anonymous says:

Sure, keep kicking the can down the road. Opening which we will undoubtedly have to do at some point…. like the rest of the world…. will only get worse for us. The world will learn how to adapt to Covid and variants and we will stay sheltered in our idiotic cocoons and be devastated when it finally hits us. -which it will-. Cayman leadership is a special breed of stupid arrogance.

    • Anonymous says:

The majority of the rest of the world is not open. And if they were most of those countries have been doing a cyclical open and close border shuffle, as the virus re-emerges and continues to kill people. Do you people ever do any real research or fact-checking before jumping on CNS for your daily harangue?

11.54 You are an ungrateful, disrespectful wretched person. Just because you do not value your life does not mean that everyone else should not value theirs. This ‘stupid’ has kept us all safe, whether you like it or not,and most of us ate grateful for that.

      • Anonymous says:

Kept us safe – but at a cost of destroying the tourism industry and converting a whole group of caymanians that worked in it into government handout dependents. And now threatening the financial services industry die to problems with retaining staff and competing with open jurisdictions. The OP wasn’t polite but his points are valid – locking the borders was a good idea yup to the development of vaccines – now it is delaying the inevitable.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes! if you want to be so dramatic…If the cost of keeping us safe destroys the tourism industry, so let it be.

        • Anonymous says:

Oh give me a break drama queen!

        • Typical Caymanian says:

With the “destruction of the tourism industry” as you put it, we only suffered a 7% drop in GDP, it’s been just under 18 months since we went into lockdown and we’ve come out of it for quite sometime, there has been sufficient jobs posted by multiple companies on island as we’ve gone back to a sense of normality. Those “government handout dependents” are more than satisfied sitting at home and collecting a cheque and it’s as simple as that.
Enough time has lapsed for individuals to secure gainful employment.
It was time that Cayman moved away from depending on tourism and high time that we started to circulate our money in our own economy, locals can finally make use of facilities and services that we once could not afford the luxury of simply because these companies were forced to adjust the rates accordingly.
          Stop making excuses.

          • Anonymous says:

You partially right. Local tourism workers have been chattel slaves.
I know some with many years in stuck in a crummy tourism job. Now many don’t have the skills to turn on a PC and use Word.
Yes they could have tried on their own. But the minimum wage game demands maximum strength and energy. Keeps people dumb and stuck dependent on it just to meet their basic needs.
Do who CAN complain or demand advancement or opportunities?
Shameful on the part of the businesses really.

It is unreasonable to think that the government can “give comfort to the public that the government had the situation in hand”. If you have been around long enough you would have been on the receiving end of government/political lies, incompetence and misdirection. People in the Cayman Islands understand that when the going gets tough the only people they can rely on is themselves.

      • Anonymous says:

People are wearing masks on flight and social distanced. All had a PCR test. The ones vaccinated should definitely not have to quarantine. With all those precautions in place…I would definitely be one angry customer if I was placed in quarantine for such a silly reason and then after 10, 14, 16 days or whatever the ridiculous amount of days I still came back negative, I would be so angry over the waste of my vacation time, the money wasted, the trouble I would be in w/ my job for extending the vacation, the extra expense of parking at the airport at home destination, animal care extended, etc.
Follow the science instead of the paranoia.

        • Anonymous says:

This was an international flight so they all had to quarantine anyway smh

        • Anonymous says:

Then don’t travel during this time. or travel somewhere people are not “scared” of COVID. People here have worked so hard to enjoy the liberties we are now enjoying. So tired of hearing people who’s going to “die” and who’s mental health is suffering if they cannot travel or see their families. If you want to travel then travel but know the consequences when you need to come back- quarantine. If you want to see your families no one is forcing you not to leave the island. You can opt not to come back here if your families are really important to you. Some people here don’t even have enough money to put food on their tables let alone travel and you hear these entitled people complaining about not being able to go shopping or go to a wedding or reunions or see friends overseas. Do you even realize that some people here on island have not seen their families until they get rolled over or until they make enough money which for some will never happen but life does not end for them.

I am not supporter of that govt but wise/sage thinking. Only a fool can’t change their minds. Thank you, Mr. Roy. Without a doubt, the majority of CAYMANIANS, aka voters, are of the EXACT same conviction. Hands down! The PACT govt, that I support, should keep that reality in mind. Do not get distracted that you are the people’s government, Premier, and more specifically, the Caymanian people. The weight of Caymanians needlessly passing, because you were not wise enough or purposely chose to ignore, at this time, to see the reality around you, would be a very heavy burden for all of you and not easily forgotten by any of us. Please reconsider and end the anxiety our people are having about this very clear decision. Show us the leadership (swiftness) in the interest of CAYMANIANS we voted and yearned for when we went to the polls in April. I pray I do not regret supporting you all. Close the door to special interest noise. It’s not easy and we understand, but the smiles of Caymanians everywhere, including, as you can see PPM core supporters shall be the outcome that shows your strength. We want a peaceful Christmas not a masked one away from loved ones with people sick and dying around us. No amount of tourist dollars is worth the peace we have enjoyed in these unstable times. RECONSIDER TODAY! Announce next week. Thank you from Caymanians all around this country. Oh and we know our borders need to have less restrictions at some point. This is NOT the point and it truly is not complicated.

Most are vocal business owners and manager already rolling in cash and won’t be filling their job positions with Caymanians anyway – if they were, they would have spent the last 18 months training them…
Then there are the lazy-ass stipend takers who could and should be out filling the jobs they bitch about being taken by expats, but it is easier to take the free money and cry for reopening – but they do realise the free money will stop, right?
          Cannot make this sh!t up.
Stop the stipends, and there are plenty of jobs out there for Caymanians. Problem is, we need to work when we get them.

Bermuda update from this afternoon. Link below. (same population and vax rates as Cayman. No quarantine for vaxxed, just Day 1, 4, 10 testing. Unvaxxed quarantine for 14 days). Masks required for kids in school and indoor places. Crowd sizes limited. My colleagues in Bermuda were very confident two weeks ago, but now a bit worried. Delta is so contagious.

“Covid-19: 192 new cases pushes total to 613 active infections. Over 20 now In hospital.”

    https://www.royalgazette.com/health/news/article/20210910/covid-19-192-new-cases-pushes-total-to-613-infections/

Wow. 28 in hospital now in Bermuda. I’ll admit, I was open up, open up….I’m backing away from that now. Talking to my colleagues in Bermuda, they might be back to work from home, virtual learning in a week. They were fine a few weeks ago.

Very contagious. A few cases hang around for a few weeks, then outbreak.

Bermuda has 40 hospital beds (not literal beds, but staff/infrastructure to handle 40 attended persons with normal hours).

Kids are masked all day in school (started this week), and masks required indoors, so not like these cases occurred when restrictions weren’t in place.

    • Anonymous says:

Less cases than Cayman- been open for over a year.

    • Anonymous says:

The only important point (missing from the article) is how many of the 20 hospital admissions were vaccinated? That’s what we need to know. The fact that 600 people are infected, vaccinated or not, is irrelevant if their symptoms are minor and indistinguishable from the common cold.

      • Anonymous says:

Only reason not to tell us is majority are vaccinated.

      • Anonymous says:

It’s not actually the point. Everyone is fixated on the vaccines. At the end of the day, statistically, the vast majority of people who get covid will be asymptomatic or have a cold. A small percentage of people will get seriously ill and a smaller percentage will die.

Vaccination, by all accounts, reduces most people’s chance or the latter outcomes.

There will be plenty of vaccinated people in the hospital in countries where there is a high percentage of vaccinated people.

        It doesn’t prove anything.

All of that said there is no longer any point distinguishing between vaxxed and unvaxxed. If people are too stupid or afraid to see the benefits of the vaccine that’s their problem. We are creating all kinds of problems by designating these people as second class citizens. It’s against the fundamental principles of western civilization and we are just rolling over. All too happy to take away people’s rights.

It was killing thousands in India and the USA particularly the states were lit up like Christmas trees with the delta variant..Did he think it Cayman was exempt from the delta variant..

Call it for it is ..one upmanship!

Because ot was the opposite of what PACT wanted to do. If Wayne said the sun will come up in the East Alden would say it will come up in the West.

🙄”… two cases of community transmission..” Welcome to the real world!!!

Protect and save lives? What load. Where are the free and mandated smoking cessation programs? Where are the free and mandated drug treatment programs? Why isn’t Weight Watchers and Nutrisytem free and mandated? Why aren’t we mandating enployers enforce paid excercise programs to stave off heart disease? All these things cost waay more lives than COVID ever has or will. Because those things are all self-inflicted, you say? Well what about drunk driving and texting while driving. Those also kill more people than COVID. Where are the mandatory breathalyzer ignitions? Or the mandatory phone disabling software while driving? Why aren’t there mandatory regulations on sugar and high cholesterol foods? Why not submit to weekly cholesterol tests in order to splurge on high cholesterol meals? Because it isn’t and never was about saving lives and public safety. There are plenty of other threatening killers that we just ignore. Why some much attention on this? It makes no sense.

Wow ‘News 1234’, you seem angry. Did you know that in the US 400,000 deaths can be attributed to cardiac arrest with a percentage of those caused by anger ?

Relax and get ready to mask up

    • Well said ! Looking at the shape and size of a lot the general population on Cayman, Covid is the least of their worries.

    • Anonymous says:

Difference between COVID and all the other hazards you mentioned? COVID is contagious…. very, very contagious. It’s a plague not something like heart disease and lung cancer which can be avoided with lifestyle enhancements.

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

      Well said News1234 !!!
As I’ve said before the only number that really tells us how dangerous this virus or the next variant is, are the number of people who have been admitted to hospital with NO underlying conditions.
The huge majority of people dying and getting seriously ill are those who sadly made a lifestyle choice that is now probably too late to change.
The unvaxxed are being stomped on for holding us to ransom but the healthy 18-30 age bracket (that are stopping us reaching 80%) have more chance of getting killed by a Water Buffalo.
We need to steer clear of fascist mandates.
Instead of locking down the entire country, why don’t we look after and keep safe as much as we can our own family members who have underlying conditions and let everyone else get on with living their lives.
Wherever we go and whatever we do Covid positives will be lurking somewhere.

Robert you scare me, – so pretty much f%^k everyone else except me and my family and of course the Health Care Professionals I’ll need to keep those dear to me well, – but then The Health Care Professionals made a lifestyle choice so technically they’re disposable as well, – dbl f&^%#$g wowsers

        • Robert Mugabe IV says:

Jeez Louise, re read my post, I’m saying protect the most vulnerable to the best of our ability. I never said anyone is disposable. Only the truly delusional believe we can avoid variant contacts.

So Billions of people should change their version of living or freedom because of this one child? What about the vast majority of children that are not impacted by COVID at all. Does that give you strength and hope? If fear and death are your guide, the World will give you an endless supply.

          • Anonymous says:

you don’t get it do you 7:35 and altruism seemingly a difficult concept for you. Yes it’ one child but the trend of child related covid cases and deaths in Florida has recently more than doubled. Granted that on a scale against the population its relatively small and the President of American Academy of Pediatrics Florida President stating they weren’t worried sick about it. They did additionally state however ‘We’re all worried because we’re not sure what’s going to happen in the future.”

So my question is this, (with the additional assumption you’re comfortably vaccinated) – are you willing to put your hand up when the first child here dies if you had the hindsight and ability to largely prevent it ? Its not fear and death being a guide, its responsibility.

News 1243, – not one thing in your proposed list of potential mandates to balance the unfair equilibrium besides drunk driving has the ability to kill someone else in close proximity or public environment. Drunk driving does kill people and for that there is due process by a justice system. Equally if an individual knowingly exposes others to the COVID virus there is also a similar process in place, whether that is consistent or not is another conversation. With that said, – so yes it is about saving lives with a decree to prevent the cause of possible loss of life by another individual/individuals.

Okay, Roy, we can hear (by the crackling pitch in your voice) your (or, more apt, the Opposition’s) viewpoints, which are being used to play politics.

The PPM-Unity Government hid behind COVID as a shield of protection against bad governance and unconstitutional decisions and acts (including failures act) the were unlawful, irrational, disproportionate and procedurally unfair for being incompatible with our Constitution’s Bill of Rights (infringing ss.19, 24, Bill of Rights).

Now, when the PACT Government is considering reopening, it is only now that you have such a strong opinion different from what you already put forward publicly. This is understandable, especially because PPM (Unity Government) never had a reopening plan — only stalling tactics and preferential treatment to special interests and big money elite.

It is difficult to watch the deterioration of your moral compass and rational logic (which you once had, but possess no more). But, as the wise saying goes, “bad company corrupts good manners” — you are now the poster boy for that!

I would rather have Lil Wayne as Premier (with all his faults and shortcomings) than you Ridiculous Roy and the PPM in power.

    • Anonymous says:

Problem is that Wayne is in charge in name only.
The UDP cabal headed by Mac and aided by Kenneth, Saunders and Jay are calling the shots.
Look at the lack of “moral compass” in that lot rather than question Roy’s .

5.45 Progressives led by Alden did an excellent job in their handling of Covid-19 whether you like them or not.

No. Alden hid behind COVID and only did his Masonic brothers favors, whether you like it or not.

    💥 Breaking News
COVID vaccines will NOT end pandemic and officials must now ‘gradually adapt strategy’ to cope with inevitable spread of virus, World Health Organization official warns.
“Dr Hans Kluge, the WHO’s Europe director, said new strains of Covid will continue to emerge and the virus will remain with us like the flu, so vaccination strategies need to be adapted.”

  32. Anonymous says:

Such pearls of wisdom from old Roy & his boss Alden. Is there anything that the current goverment does that you two will not complain about?

    • Anonymous says:

Since Roy and Alden are so concerned with the merits of decisions, perhaps they should consider the merits of the decision to bestow the honour of QC on him, despite not practicing law in years, nah true?

    • Anonymous says:

Hey Alden, we in Red Bay are still waiting for you to show up to help with the storm problems. Could someone please post where is Alden’s Red Bay office located?

      • Anonymous says:

That easy. Alden does not have an office in Red Bay. Alden is just pocketing that $5,000 per month, which is provided to MPs for their constituency office. What a loser Alden is.

        • Anonymous says:

Why doesn’t he just be the MP for Camana Bay, Dart will approve. Hell throw on the title of QC mayor. Please Alden just leave Red Bay and let us have a real elected representative like Prospect has now.
The governor should make him give back that office money at least.

We in Garston Smith Drive, Scholars Drive and Courtyard Drive have been waiting on Kathy. We can’t find her. She has no consituency office and doesn’t appear to answer her phone.

I wouldn’t complain about that chair. It looks nearly as comfy as the job. I’m also really good at calling out shortcomings but not producing solutions.
