Five new local COVID cases linked to outbreaks

| 27/09/2021 | 183 Comments

(CNS): Five more community transmission of COVID-19 have emerged from the 1,167 PCR test results over the weekend but all of these people were already isolating as three of them were connected to the North Side outbreak and the other two were connected to the cases at the George Town Primary School, according to Public Health. This brings the total of local transmissions connected to these two outbreaks to thirty adults and children.

There were seven more positive test results in this batch from travellers also in isolation.

Given that around 12,000 people have been tested for COVID over the last two weeks which found just 30 local cases, the outbreaks appear to have been contained. However, as the two weeks of isolation comes to an end for the families quarantined in relation to the GTPS outbreak, they now need to be tested before they can leave and it is likely there will be more cases.

The family members and children are being asked to attend the Lions Centre for these exit tests during the time slots below:

  • 1:30pm – Reception, Year 1 and their teachers
  • 2:00pm – Year 2 and their teachers
  • 2:30pm – Year 3 and their teachers
  • 3:00pm -Year 4 and their teachers
  • 3:30pm- Year 5 and their teachers
  • 4:00pm – Years 6 and their teachers and any other GTPS staff

After testing, all families are being told to go immediately back home without making any stops, remain in quarantine and await advice from Public Health or the Department of Education Services.

“All families are required to stay in quarantine until they have received negative results for each family member in their household. Test results will be emailed directly to the individual within 24 hours of testing,” public health officials said Monday. “Once all members of a households have received a negative result, they are then considered released by Public Health and are free from quarantine. All others will need to remain in quarantine until contacted by Public Health.”

If anyone in the household tests positive for COVID-19, everyone in the home will need to remain in isolation and will be contacted by Public Health.

Those who are currently positive will be tested at home on Wednesday, 29 September, and public health will contact these households directly to advise them of their at-home testing times. They are reminded to remain in isolation until tested and released by public health. If anyone in the household tests positive, the entire household must all remain in isolation.

While there may be further positive cases in relation to the GTPS cluster, it seems that the virus has not spread throughout the community despite the two distinct outbreaks in North Side and in the capital.

With this very low positive rate from the more than 12,000 people tested this month, the apparent panic in the immediate wake of the GTPS outbreak has given way to resentment over the new limitations on social freedoms and mask mandates now imposed through government regulations.

Restaurants and bars already hurt by the closed borders are again required to space out tables and limit the number of guests. Sports clubs, gyms and exercise studios also now need to get either a negative PCR test or vaccination certificate before customers are allowed in.

Indoor sports for all kids is being placed on hold as private clubs struggle to see how those under 12 can play games such as squash or attend dance classes indoors. Masks are also now required to enter stores as well as in work places and schools throughout the day.

Vaccination numbers climbed again over the weekend, with 350 people rolling up their sleeves for their first shot and another 158 people got their second dose. Over 30 people have also now had a booster shot. While the vaccine is not preventing breakthrough infections of the Delta variant of this coronavirus, it is preventing people from being seriously ill and also limits the period of time and ease with which they can transmit the virus

The HSA has released a new vaccination schedule which includes a district clinic in Savannah tonight and at Camana Bay for the rest of the month except Thursday.

See the vaccine schedule on the HSA website here.

There really should be a central phone number one can call and complain to when service reps serve you with their mask below their chin!
Butterfield, Flow are extremely poor examples .. at Butterfield, the woman in Customer Service had her mask below her chin “because she couldn’t breathe”!! And the manager was nowhere to be found.
Seriously!! If the govt mandates masks, then FFS make your workers wear masks!

Selfish aholes that don’t wear masks particularly in public places are the ones we should be most concerned about as they don’t care so are probably less likely to have good hygiene.

I have stated before and I will state again that those posting disinformation in an attempt to portray Covid as nothing serious and that Cayman should drop quarantine and follow the route that Bermuda has taken either do not live in Cayman or are paid trolls or both.

In an ideal world we could have a formal referendum to determine the will of the people but I suspect that our politicians have a pretty good idea of what that will is and have acted accordingly.

Gosh, are you one of those that have it registered? Were there any contract tracing? Do you live with unvaccinated individuals? Do you have young children who are unvaccinated? Did you in the 10 days prior or 10 days later after testing come into contact with unvaccinated relatives?

Do you have relatives that are unvaccinated who you would not care to DIE!

        Sorry to ask serious questions…

Final question…….. WERE YOU VACCINATED? I actually don’t expect a true answer. #caymancompetence.

        • Yessir says:

Yes, yes, yes, yes (see previous answer), no (if you don’t count the kids), no, yes (double jabbed 3 months before I caught it).

My mother said to me the other day: “You lot moaning about having to wear a mask, and not being able to move around without restrictions, nor being able to go to work. I was a young girl in London during the second world war– during the blitz. Every single night year-after-year we lost power; the lights went out, and bombs rained down on our heads for what seemed like hours. When the air-raid siren sounded, we had to rush into a cold and dark bomb shelter at the end of the garden to sit on a blanket for hours on end, usually wearing a claustrophobic, thick rubber mask with a heavy cannister filter attached in case of a chemical bomb attack. All the shops were empty, and food was rationed through government food stamps. Spam and powdered egg were our staple diet. You complain above travel restrictions? Most often we couldn’t get past the end of our road due to the rubble of the unlucky houses that had taken a direct hit from the German V2 rockets. The only people who travelled freely were the very young children evacuated out of London to the countryside to live, sometimes for years, with people they had never met; or Fathers, Brothers, and Sons who had been given a rifle and a tin helmet and shipped to the beaches of Normandy. You think YOU’VE got it bad?” I apologized to her for moaning about our minor social impositions.

Thank you! One of the best posts this year.

      • Anonymous says:

@8.32. The threat was real for the second world war and the measures taken proportionate.

We are dealing with disproportionate restrictions put on our lives and especially our children lives for a virus most people will recover from and many not even know they have.

World War 2 and Covid 19 are not comparable, although some may say we are actually in World War 3 or heading that way. But that’s a whole other topic.

        • Anonymous says:

The electorate spoke, and our leaders have a mandate to make the decisions THEY feel are proportionate. Shout and stamp your feet all you like, but an abundance of caution may, just may, reduce the risk of 64 dead, a hospital full of sick patients on ventilators, and an overrun healthcare system, i.e., Bermuda.

What @8.32 is getting at, I think, is that what you call disproportionate restrictions are NOTHING, literally nothing to have to endure at the beginning (for us) of a global pandemic that despite vaccinations has — by your own admission above– the potential to kill or cause permanent health issues. You’ve just spent 18-months living normally while hundreds of thousands in the US have perished. Why do think that is?

          • Anonymous says:

I entirely agree! Sadly, look at your ‘dislikes.’ Caymanians are woefully uneducated and do not understand basic science. However, we shall work forward to assist! Colonialism? Maybe, but the alternative is death and despair. Cayman electorate can choose… but we have witnessed what the electorate has chosen – not a good result!

            • Anonymous says:

Our biggest problem is that we have in the Cayman Islands a woefully uneducated people.

Just look at our politicians. Most are pathetically uneducated.

In the long run, the only thing that will save us is education but no hope on site.

              • Anonymous says:

Yes, yes, yes! Caymanians can be much better informed, and make better choices for elections if the educational system is improved.

          • Anonymous says:

No the risk of death or serious illness for fully vaccinated individuals is infinitesimal and even smaller for children. That was the advice from Dr Lee. There are literally dozens of more deadly things allowed to go unchecked in Cayman, such as car accidents, weapons violence etc. Furthermore this is not the beginning, we’ve had 18 months to prepare and nearly 9 months of vaccinating the vulnerable. There is no need for panic, we need calm leadership that listens to medical advice.

            • Anonymous says:

13% of the deaths in Bermuda were fully vaccinated people. You like those odds — a 13% chance of dying if you contract the virus?

              • Anonymous says:

Math and statistics is not your strong suit is it??

                .13 * 62 = 8

                8 / 50,000 (estimate) = 0.00016 which is 0.016%

It’s ridiculous and dishonest to say that there is a 13% chance of dying by contracting the virus. This is why people can’t make objective decisions!

                • Anonymous says:

Apologies, you’re right, my last statement is incorrect and I retract it.

Minister of Health, Bermuda, Briefing, 22 September, 21, quote:
“There were 30 deaths, of which:
26 or 86.7% were not fully vaccinated
4 or 13.3% were fully vaccinated”.

The point is vaccination does not absolutely GUARANTEE you will not die.

              • Meh says:

A mind untouched by basic mathematics. The death rate from covid for the fully vaccinated in now well below 1 in 1000. And those odds are not getting any better.

CNS: Am I wrong about this shift in opinion? I am curious if I am wrong or correct? Not a snarky question.

CNS: It seems to me that it’s more a shift to pro-opening than anti-vax in the CNS comment section. I think it’s just because this is such an emotive topic. The anti-vaxers have always been there.

What has caused the growing discontent and resentment in Cayman at this moment is the Government saying one thing then, hours later, with no explanation or logical thought process, bringing in draconian measure in the form of regulations that make absolutely no sense. That is why a vote of no confidence is now overdue.

People aren’t moaning as they think they have it worse than Brits did at the height of WWII.

People are moaning because the response was non-sensical and in direct contradiction to what Premier Lil’ Wayne stated on September 8th:

“If we get to October 14 and there has, prior to that, been a decision to proceed with that phase, that’s when that risk goes up and it is quite likely that within a period of weeks we would have COVID reintroduced into our community and we will have to learn to live with it and manage it,”

We’ve had an initial knee-jerk reaction, multiple confidence crashing press briefings and such a delay in introducing additional public health measures that they made no sense once gazetted.

At z certain point you are what your record says and the P gov’t clearly lacks a unified view on the situation and therefore we get the embarrassing pressers and nothing close to a coherent plan.

Because, if so, I suggest all the journalists get together, set up a round Robin. One week, one journalist asks the between the eyes bulls eye question, then the next week someone else pitches the doozy, and then so on and so forth and then by the time it gets back around to your turn, all has been forgotten and you’re back in the game to sock it ‘em again…

Again, big fan. Know you’re busy, keep on trucking’!

CNS (Nicky): When Mac was in charge he did at one time refuse to allow Wendy into the press briefings but that hasn’t happened since. Really, if there’s anyone left who thinks she can be intimidated, they haven’t been paying attention. She’ll ask what she wants to ask, but it’s always for a reason, not to score points. She’s a good journalist who does her job.

No vaccination mandates for front line workers but mask mandates for five year old thereby impairing their learning (with damaging long lasting consequences). Entirely disproportionate reaction to a minor outbreak that was both predicted and predictable, imposing unjustified restrictions on our civil liberties, and being directed by a minority of people who think the earth is flat and COVID will leave them with a radioactive glow, this government had made a serious wrong turn. It’s time to tell the people who are paid from the public purse that they either get vaccinated or go on unpaid leave. There would be equal amounts if not more of people bashing them for not isolating. This is a no win situation for government. But I’m happy with their response so far, but do feel they need to set a date and stick to it.

Why are there no cases in hospital? CNS – While the vaccine is not preventing breakthrough infections of the Delta variant of this coronavirus, it is preventing people from being seriously ill and also limits the period of time and ease with which they can transmit the virus.
So, due to our incredibly high vaccination rate, we are less likely to get ill, harder to transmit and a shorter transmission period. This is science. These are facts. Government’s solution, lock the vaccinated up, not for zero days, like other countries do, you know the ones that have the scientific ability actually create a vaccine to save our lives, but for eight to fifteen days. I wish our government would refrain from speaking about science until they learn how to count days properly. The Cayman Islands. We are one of the most vaccinated counties on the world. World class. But we don’t trust the vaccines to actually work – even though our empty hospitals prove they do.

When are our senior citizens getting their booster shots, and are the cluster cases the Delta variant?

  25. Anonymous says:

Okay, so we stamped out the outbreak, we are all taking the precautions, we are now ready to open up safely to vaccinated tourists – and the virus.

We all put up with the f___king around, waiting for all the unvaccinated people to stop dithering, time for them to get a chance to find out.

Just got my booster shot at CVS today ( in the US) and nope, no digital formatting for the vaccination card. The only thing they could do is print out my vaccination record and only of the booster shot since I received my other two shots at a state clinic. I can request my vaccination record from the state in paper format which will take approximately two weeks and they will notarize it, but that is it.

No digital records possible. So, please Cayman, tell me how to get a digital record when none is possible? Now, I have three shots.

          • Guido Marsupio says:

You can try sending that documentation to your health care organization/hospital. I did, and they entered them all into their system and issued me a SMART-health card referencing those shots. Warning, YMMV. Not all hospitals will do that – discretionary.

          • Anonymous says:

YES Please Cayman. 3 shots at County/State USA, OH, USA agency, but no digital record – just US/Vaccine record. What provisions do you have for me to come to my Condo and SPEND MONEY??? crickets. crickets, crickets…

Let’s be honest about what is really happening. We have zero people sick FROM COVID (we have one lady that became sick WITH COVID, but not from COVID). Why? Because we have the best adult vaccination rate in the world.

So… why did my child have to wear her mask at ALL TIMES today… even when seated at her desk?

Why on the other hand were there people eating and drinking freely at restaurants across the island? How many masks were at the Marriott on Friday night at OcktoberFest? None. In fact, today at lunch, there were no masks being worn by guests and even by many staff members.

A complete unmitigated fail of government.

Protect the kids? Complete crap thrown at you as a distraction by those that do not understand math and statistics.

Education minster I implore you to do the right thing and IMMEDIATELY remove the mask mandate for children.

Stand up Cayman… NO MORE MASKS FOR KIDS.

    • Anonymous says:

I would like to see Juliana wear her mask all day long while seated at her desk. She’d never make it. Come on Juliana…. Do exactly what you’re asking the kids to do. Wear it all day.

      • Anonymous says:

I wear a mask all day. I have since July 2020. Not really a big issue unless I make it one. I realize it’s something I need to do to protect myself and those around me( at risk, essential job), so I just wear it.

        8:08 here.

I am sadly re-educated of my thoughts of the low Cayman IQ (a nasty remark? Suck it up and show me wrong) by the number of ‘dislikes.’

One possibility: The CNS has been recently inundated by BOTS (please correct my terms CNS), or computer generated responses to questions trying to influence opinions. I have seen this trend on several recent threads.

Second possibility: Cayman families actually don’t care about the health of their children (note: This is factually/legally you’re right).

        CNS: Am I wrong?

CNS: Yes, you are wrong. Computer generated responses are caught by several layers of anti-spam software. I would normally delete this comment because of the “low Cayman IQ” remark. Yes, it’s offensive, as is your “second possibility”.

Yes! Are they even reporting how many cases are symptomatic? They’re terrifying everyone over kids getting sick and it seems like kids barely get symptoms ever.

  28. Anon says:

Ridiculous this place. Just as others open up here is vlosing down. Riven by emotional and religious fear. The place is run by absolute idiots.

  29. Anonymous says:

So what was the source of the outbreak? Everyone in Cayman knows but CIG refuses to acknowledge.

  30. Anonymous says:

There is a small percentage of our population that do not see outside of their own irrational fear. People’s dignity and livelihoods seemingly don’t matter to them but hopefully we can break down the barriers by educating them on the realities of “the science” and let common sense prevail in the end.

  31. Anonymous says:

Woop dee doo – not unexpected, and nothing to fear. Since we have all these restrictions in place again, can we at least open the border now?

  32. Anonymous says:

Cases. Any symptoms? Anyone in hospital? I feel
Like banging my head against the wall. We will have COVID cases forever now. It’s not going away.

I am not scared of COVID, because I am vaccinated and trust the science that tells me that if I get it I will have a mild case and won’t need to go to the hospital.

I am not scared of my kids (all 4 of them are under age 10) getting COVID, because I trust the science that they will have zero or mild symptoms.

The only thing I am scared of is the government’s overreaction to cases. I’m scared of closed schools. I’m scared of forced quarantines of entire households well beyond close contacts. I’m scared of more restrictions on our daily lives.

    • Anonymous says:

… It’s not the symptoms for your kids, it would be the possible life-long lung, etc problems!

But hey, it’s your kids – let them get Covid with little/no symptoms and then hope they don’t need to drag an oxygen tank around when they are 40.

      Being careful is soooooooo inconvenient.

      • Anonymous says:

If life-long lung problems were such a “possibility”, then why are kids all over the world out living their lives? Is the CIG the only government in the world aware of this clear and present danger to all unvaccinated kids?

        • Anonymous says:

A truly stupid reply. A child that is 7 TODAY will not realize the lung damage for many years.

Sheesh, I always forget to stop trying to educate (yes, I’m a former teacher) a rock, reason with a drunk, or lecture someone who is stoned… or a listener of FOX!

Go ahead, play the odds game with your children.

          • Anonymous says:

We play the odds game with ourselves and our children every single day, it’s called living. There is a reason the UK doesn’t mandate masks for 5 year olds or vaccines for that matter: because the odds are infinitesimally small

          • Anonymous says:

I believe the previous poster was pointing out that other countries are not inflicting the same restrictions on children yet they are also aware of POSSIBLE life-long lung problems. Are all these other countries “truly stupid” as you called the previous poster? Are all parents of all children in most other countries of the world “truly stupid”? We are all aware here that we can’t predict what consequences of many of our actions today will be in 40 years. That doesn’t mean we wrap ourselves in bubble wrap and never leave our houses. Goodness gracious.

I am also sick of posters playing the “Well, I guess you don’t care about your children’s lives” any time someone dares to question all the restrictions being inflicted on kids. Yes, because I question the mask mandate I don’t love my kids. You figured me out.

I watch many traveling vlogs on YouTube, different countries, mostly European, how they are managing during pandemic 2nd year. All are doing fine. Capacity is reduced, staff wear face masks, visitors do not-river tours, sea tours, hotels..prices are reduced a bit, but in general tourism industry is recovering. Oh, there are no quarantines or special kind of restrictions for the visitors. Life is normal everywhere else, but Cayman.

    • Anonymous says:

People are dying from Covid-19 in those countries including young kids BTW. Not many you say? Go to one of those countries and let one of your loved ones die from COVID-19 and then see whether you still think they “are doing fine”.

  37. Anonymous says:

So…what’s the plan now? Just say that Cayman Airways will have 5 fights a week to Miami. GREAT news for everyone, however….what is the plan to deal with the influx of travellers. Whether tourists or residents they need to self-quarantine, which will end up in some more community spread because people can’t be trusted to isolate. Or COVID will get out on Day 10 by a vaccinated person who was cleared on Day 7 (which is really Day 9). Will an entire school, plus their families be quarantined again? Will even stricter restrictions come into play than what we currently just got re-introduced to? It’s all so absurd!!!

Get vaccinated. Trust the science that if you are vaccinated your chances of hospitalization are very low and your chances of dying are basically zero. Trust the science that kids only have mild symptoms. Time to get on with the show like the rest of the world.

  38. Anonymous says:

WTF – are we still trying for a zero Covid strategy? Until when? This stupidness needs to end…

  39. Angry parent says:

Im a parent of one of the GTPS students. I got an email this morning saying that we did NOT need to be tested!

It secificalky said that ONLY the families of the kids that originally tested positive needed to be tested and not the rest.

It also said the same thing on the classroom dojo message that parents received. I would post the screen shot of this if I knew how to do so on CNS.

Now, this info in the story above is totally different and says we all need to be tested?

    Mixed messages!!

Which one is it? Government seems to be very confused with the left arm not knowing what the right arm is doing.

  40. Free Caymanians from tyranny! says:

“With this very low positive rate from the more than 12,000 people tested this month, the apparent panic in the immediate wake of the GTPS outbreak has given way to resentment over the new limitations on social freedoms and mask mandates now imposed through government regulations.”

Well put CNS, either open the borders on October 14th as originally planned or rescind these draconian regulations that make little sense.
Even the minister of health struggled to understand them at the press conference.
