Doctors Hospital drive-thru testing

(CNS): An unvaccinated employee at the Doctors Hospital was one of three people who tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest results from Public Health. All three were community transmissions. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said Tuesday that this person was a secondary contact of one of the people involved in the first community outbreak, which is now known to have occurred in North Side.

The individual was tested because of their front-line job working with the private hospital’s COVID-19 testing programme and not in relation to the contact tracing. The other two positive community cases who are also unvaccinated were already in isolation as a result of being primary contacts in the same outbreak on 8 September.

While these two individuals pose no public health threat, given that they have been in isolation since the outbreak, the third individual, who was placed in isolation yesterday when their status was revealed, was working on the front-line of healthcare.

The person, who was employed at Doctors Hospital in the screening process for SARS-CoV-2 around a month ago, was traced as a secondary contact and therefore not required to isolate, but was tested as part of the regular screening process. Although unvaccinated against the virus, Dr Lee said the worker was asymptomatic.

“The Doctors Hospital screenings are run separately to the inpatient and outpatient services,” Dr John Lee explained as he announced the results Tuesday morning. He said the facility is now working with Public Health to assist with contact tracing.

The CMO claimed the risk to the public through this person’s work is low because of the use of personal protective equipment. “This issue really stresses the importance of assisting Public Health with any enquiries and complying with their requests if you are asked to isolate with your entire household,” Lee added in his video update.

In a statement, the Doctors Hospital noted that their staff member who tested positive “worked at this one particular testing facility in full personal protective equipment, has not entered the main hospital, nor did they have any contact with core hospital employees”.

Meanwhile, according to the latest figures released Tuesday afternoon there are 50 active cases of the virus among 866 people in isolation and quarantine exactly half of which are suffering symptoms including the woman in her 70s who was hospitalised with other medical problems and remains in hospital.

There was no additions to the COVID vaccine numbers on Tuesday, as the vaccination clinic were all closed Monday. The national rate of those having received both doses therefore remains at 71%, with 77% of the population having had at least one shot.

I would recommend to anyone visiting their doctors office to first enquire if the staff including the doctor and/or nurse attending to them have been vaccinated.

I had no idea that my doctor who is know pushing the Sinovec vaccine was unvaccinated when I went for my check up. I am not sure if he has now taken the vaccine even if it is Sinovec but I will not be returning to his office until I know that he has been fully vaccinated and for that matter, the people in the office there as well.

It is difficult to believe that with all that is known now that hospitals and doctors office are not requiring their staff to be vaccinated.

Still having a hard time seeing how this drugs ineffectiveness is being blamed on those who don’t take it. In a few years from now when the after effects are better understood Who will they blame then? The Doctors?

    🤦🏼‍♂️

The slew of recent incidents from the people with positive PCR test results being allowed to fly in on Cayman Airways, to the number of quarantine breaches, to the absence of vaccine mandates, and now this suggests that we are not prepared for the status quo let alone opening. This from Singapore (which is much better prepared) –

“In Singapore, the country’s health ministry has reported 1,457 new Covid cases today, the highest since April last year.

A recent rise in cases after the relaxation of some Covid measures has prompted Singapore to pause further reopening.”

    • Geographer says:

Singapore has a densely packed population of about 5 million people. It is totally incomparable to the Cayman Islands.

    • Anonymous says:

Don’t forget the rest of the world. Maybe a million a day. And don’t forget all the people that are dying every day from falling. And take into account that you will die of something for sure. Better to just stay in your room until then so you don’t get run over by those who are living life.

  4. Anonymous says:

CNS – Perhaps the fact that you quoted Dr. Lee’s (the Government Chief Medical Officer) statements in relation to the Doctors’ Hospital incident have some people believing that it is a government hospital.

Perhaps some reference in your article that Doctors Hospital is a private facility would help. Many readers and posters do not even live in Cayman so they would not necessarily know. The power of accurate and clear reporting……

CNS: Paragraph 2, first sentence. Accurate and clear reporting is wasted on people who apparently can’t be bothered to read.

I don’t trust none of these health people anymore. It’s obvious they are not taking proper precautions. Let’s look back in history: Shetty first exposure closed…HSA community spread.. first responders and HSA staff put in isolation, now Doctor’s Hospital. If they aren’t protecting themselves, how can they protect us? If we have people sick in hospital with Covid, we will probably go to the hospital for something else and get Covid. The medical industry is not prepared.

  6. Anonymous says:

Yeah because they lowered the 14 days quarantine for Spikies. Good job

  7. Anonymous says:

Not really, even before Delta as large %, perhaps over half of Covid-19 cases as asymptomatic. That is a big part of what makes the spread so difficult to stop as so many carriers have no idea they are transmitting.

  8. Anonymous says:

So if this was a teacher all the kids in their class, their parents and families, and anyone the teacher came in contact with for more than 15 minutes would now be on lockdown quarantine. But government cannot afford to tell Doctors Hospital to shut down the entire testing department and everyone who came in close contact with this staff member, so we will just pretend there was no risk because they were wearing PPE.

It really rather illustrates why there should be a vaccination mandate for front line health workers. You cannot simultaneously say that in order to prevent the hospitals being overwhelmed with cases we have to have quarantine and mask mandates, then tolerate a situation in which a hospitals staff could end up quarantined. All the ventilators in the world wont do you much good if all the doctors and nurses have been infected pr forced to quarantine by one of their co workers. Madness.

  9. ELVIS says:

I’m fully vaccinated and wish others would too. I’m starting to wonder however when this will ever end or how long do we have to keep closing everything and panic testing everyone and delaying everything when the world is starting to learn to live with this. Lets face it it wont ever go away now i doubt.
Just asking for a friend lol.

  10. Anonymous says:

CNS – speaking of frontline workers and the risk that they create if they are unvaccinated. Do you know if census workers are all vaccinated? No unvaccinated person should be allowed in anyone’s home to conduct interviews if we have community transmission. Delta is effectively airborne. What are the protocols?

CNS: There is a story coming about the census workers.

You mean the vaccine that doesn’t stop the vaccinated from transmitting the virus to both the vaxxed and unvaxxed.
Is that the protection you are on about ?
      Absolute nonsense.
This Govt or any democratically elected Govt cant legally FORCE anyone to get vaccinated.

I will say it again. The science is there, the facts are there. No reason not to open the borders.
We have a weak leader who refuses to open up.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes, time for our Government to represent the majority of Caymanians and the population instead of the minority that it is pandering to.

      • Anonymous says:

Perhaps they meant the vaccine that isn’t guaranteed to stop you catching the disease, but reduces it by about 75%, and then in the vast majority of cases keeps your ass out of the hospital and the morgue. As opposed to the cross your fingers and pray defence.

  13. Anonymous says:

Yaron, can you weigh in here? Hopefully this was just an oversight and you will move to have all of your front line people vaccinated.

  14. Anonymous says:

My take on this is that if the Doctors/Owners of CTMH do not want to take up the mantle to ensure their front line staff are vaccinated, then I believe it is time that the government starts putting mandates in place.

The minority anti-vaxxers can scream about their human rights as much as they want but I believe the majority of the Cayman people will support the Government for taking this hard stance.

For the record, I mean all front line staff in any jobs or businesses.

  15. Robert Mugabe IV says:

More mass panic on the way again.
Condemning the unvaxxed frontline health worker. The employee was working with fully protective gear…….whether the staff member was unvaxxed or vaxxed you have to believe that the equipment will protect you (the patient)
Why is anyone surprised this could/would happen.
What happens when a vaccinated frontline health worker tests positive when they have been taking Covid tests. Some people on here would expect them to double up the amount of protective gear they wear and expect different results.
Mass panic x 2 on the way.
Another knee jerk reaction on the way from a Govt who can’t/won’t control quarantining or punish those who break the protocols, yet want to keep the borders closed. It’s beyond crazy now.

Time for everyone to start living in the real world. Get rid of the fear.
Can’t blame the unvaxxed anymore for not opening.
It’s the weak Govt listening to their friends who are holding us back.

    Open the borders.

        • Anonymous says:

Totally agree! Her case was caught because she had to get tested weekly whereas a vaxx could be positive and still work frontline with potential to pass on virus even if asymptomatic. Bottom line – both vaxx and unvaxx are responsible for protecting ourselves and the next person 100%. I’m hearing and seeing the majority here don’t want to wear mask or keep distance because they are vaxx. Sad mentality! And even worst are the ones who think there is no virus. We are in for some very rough waves when the floodgates open!

Time for the Government to grow a pair and mandate vaccines for all civil servants that can take it. Not vaccinating your healthcare workers increases the risk to patients and will have legal ramifications if a patient dies and the contact is traced back to an unvaccinated hospital worker. I am sure Doctors Hospital will now rethink their recruitment and vaccination policies following the latest news.

Err – no. You cant die and be asymptomatic – not from Covid anyway. The bit where you stop breathing is a little bit of symptom, don’t you think? Its not like getting hit by a car you know – you start off asymptomatic, then develop symptoms which worsen and then you die.

  19. Do your job bobo says:

Whatever happened with requiring vaccinations for work permits? Wtf Pact? Are you asleep? So insane to shut down an entire country for a handful of fools when we have the tools, right there, at our disposal to solve the problem.

    • Anonymous says:

The handful of tools… Requiring vaccination of work permit holders without also requiring it of expatriate civil servants would be irrational, unreasonable and unlawful. The civil service continues to want to be exempt from everything, while imposing requirements on everyone else. This does not end well.

      • Anonymous says:

Well, it ends up with a considerably smaller civil service. Not in a odd way for the civil servants involved. Covid wont care about their human rights or the civil service association or AWaynes reluctance to offend anyone – it just kills a percentage of people who are not vaccinated, pure and simple.

    • Anonymous says:

5:06, it does matter. The vaccine has been shown to have a high degree of efficacy against contracting the virus. I just saw the lame comment by Doctors Hospital that in Cayman vaccines are Not mandated. So they don’t need to take any responsibility? They have people getting up in your face and up your nostrils and they cannot require them to get vaccinated? What a load of crock.

If medical people don’t see the necessity for vaccinations how do they expect the general population to respond?

I don’t care how much PPE they are wearing, I don’t want an unvaccinated doctor or nurse up close and personal.

    • Kevin says:

I am of the same opinion. 2 reasons why I am suspect.

      1. Its not in PACT interest to reveal the truth as it would indicate that while PPM control the virus they have failed at their first test.
      2. It seems they know more than they are letting on. Why would they jump so quickly to shut the opening up down if the facts are not worse.

I could add 3. Why block out PPM if they were not hiding info. Bryan already showed he was willing to lie. Lie to even the people who put him in.

Which rather raises the question about why an individual whose very job required him to be in direct, arms length (actually nose length!) contact with people who have a higher than average probability of having contracted Coronavirus was not vaccinated, and was only tested as part of a contact testing program. Jeezums. The irony of it – you go to [Doctors Hospital] because you are concerned you may have Covid, you don’t, but whilst you are there you contract it from the person testing you.

If I have to provide a Covid sample i am going to ask the nurse if they are vaccinated and when they were last tested – and if i am not happy with the answer, ask for another nurse.

Does CTMH not have enough vaccinated staff? I certainly don’t want someone shoving something up my nose if they don’t have basic protection against being a carrier. I get that you could be a vaccinated carrier as well, but its simple probabilies to opt for a vaccinated staff member.

      • Anonymous says:

Pyes, it is their choice but then they should not be allowed to work. The hospital is blatantly reckless in allowing it.

      • Anonymous says:

Nope. Not a choice. It is an offense to endanger others under the Public Health Act. She had a positive duty to minimize the risk to the public. Vaccination would have made her, and all those she interacts with, five times safer. That is significant. There should be hell to pay. If she did not want the vaccine then she had the choice of not being in a frontline role.

      • Anonymous says:

First, the persons job gave them far higher exposure to people potentially carrying the virus than anyone ese other than those treating the infected. That puts them at risk. Second, you are then exposing numerous people who are not infected but come into be tested by putting them in direct contact with someone who at best has a high risk of getting infected, and in this case was infected. I respect the individuals freedom to choose – but the (and for that matter his employer) doesn’t get to make others tjhen bear the consequences for that gamble. Doctors Hospital would be on very shaky ground if they got sued by someone who was tested by this individual, got a negative result but subsequently contracted Covid within the incubation period of being exposed to this person.

Exactly at which location did this covid screener work?! You have got to tell us the basics. Why on earth would you keep it a secret?!

And you’d really hope that this screener wasn’t the person putting the swabs in the nose.

Exactly!! Hope the contract tracing includes all those people they tested regardless of the PPE.

No one that had been vaxxed will get tested and put into isolation. Absurd. I will be nowhere near the swab.

    • Concerned Citizen says:

The reason why XXX …truth is the person was working at the Hospital at the drive thru tent…they go inside the facility to change into their scrubs and to clock in so imagine the staff inside are touching the same finger print clock that person just touched.

will keep on happening when you don’t mandate vaccinations for frontline workers.
    third world stuff.

    • Big Bobo In West Bay says:

3:15, We are third world in the Cayman Islands. We like to convince ourselves that we are not but on vaccines we are right up there with the third world.

Once we get to the point where there isn’t a news article every time someone tests positive, we can say we are successfully living with Covid and managing just fine, without any serious side effects.

  39. SMH says:

Why would you work on the front line testing people and not get vaccinated?

It is like playing Russian roulette.

    Cue Forest Gump…

Why would government allow such a situation -Cur Forrest Gump again.

Actually – that is a good question. But instead of assuming it is just them being stupid or ignorant, maybe we should also allow that they decided that based on some good information. One of the things I think people miss is the fact that while everyone is clamoring about “take the vaccine” and “follow the science”, there are doctors, nurses, and scientists out there who are not vaccinated and have no intention to get vaccinated. Are you automatically dismissing their credentials because their choice doesn’t align to yours…? That is your confirmation bias taking hold. Instead, take am moment to really think about your question – Why would people who are “in the know” or “on the inside” or “have the training/education” and are in the “front line” not get the vaccine if it is so much wonderful that people keep pushing… it is a really good and thought provoking question.

How is this low risk if this person was wearing protective gear? She also has to go to and from her home at some point of the day. This government is such bullsh*t.
