(CNS): The most recent breakdown of the demographics of people who have been vaccinated, with at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine shows that 93% of residents in Cayman over the age of 40 have now rolled up their sleeves, with even higher rates in the 50-59 and over 60 age groups (96% and 97% respectively). The latest details from Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee on testing and vaccination reveal four positive cases of the virus over the last 24 hours in travellers but there are no reports of any new cases in the community.

The emergence of COVID-19 in the community this month has fuelled a spike in vaccinations. As of Wednesday morning, 54,796 people, or 77% of an estimated population of 71,106, have had at least one dose and 50,901, or 72%, have had two shots. Two people have also now had a third short as the booster programme gets underway for the most vulnerable.

“We know there is a lot of interest from the public about receiving a booster dose,” said Dr Lee. “However, this programme is not yet open to the public in general. The HSA will make an announcement in due course.”

As well as extremely high vaccination rates among adults, with even 81% of young people aged 18-29 having now received at least one shot, almost three quarters of eligible children aged 12-17 have also at least started their vaccination course.

    And fix the damned dump!

  2. Anonymous says:

It is ironic that many of the vaxed are among the most fearful of the disease and most fearful of reopening. 100% vaccination will not be enough to calm them. Blaming this on the unvaxed and calling them ignorant is both rude and pointless. Many of them are ready for reopening. Their risk calculations are different than the majority, perhaps, but are not crazy considering the whole thing has been politicized beyond recognition and much of the science had been “best guess.”

  3. Anonymous says:

The few ppl I know who don’t want the vaccine WANT the borders to open because they aren’t afraid of the virus. Their choice. The few who don’t want to open are the ones who are not suffering financially, without any regard to what others may be going through not only struggling financially but also separated from their families or with limited access to specialized medical care which requires overseas travel so it’s ironic that they are calling everyone else “selfish”

  4. Anonymous says:

There are negative PCR pre-arrival testing fully-vaccinated inbound travellers that are being screened at the end of their travel quarantine as positives. Some will need boosters, or wait a month or two for one of the newer mRNA VOC vaccines to end this chapter. We’ll get there.

New day, new episode, 571st in fact of the “Cayman and COVID” saga.

Is ‘the worst cold ever’ going around?
    https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-58624295

“It’s not Covid, I’ve been tested!”
“This is legit the worst cold/flu I’ve ever had, feel like I’ve been hit with a bus”

Unfortunately the article is silent on COVID vaccination status of those having Super Cold.

    • Anonymous says:

Huh? We actually have no idea what you’re going on about. Also no sane vaccinated person will ever offer themselves up to be tested and forced into a quarantine while we are basically unaffected.

      • Anonymous says:

Read the BBC article for Pete’s sake before commenting. Then you will know what it is about.

I believe it is about having severe cases of common cold. 10:23 is asking could be severely of common cold, usually very mild, caused by covid vaccines. Legit question.

        • Anonymous says:

The “common” cold can actually be very unpleasant. It’s being attributed to people’s immune systems having missed out on viral infections during lockdown, nothing to do with vaccines.

      • Hello from London says:

        Okay pupil! Listen up!

BBC has reported that usually mild common cold exhibits itself quite differently this year.
People who got common cold as the “worst cold/flu I’ve ever had”, made sure it is not COVID.
10:23 is asking is it possible that COVID vaccine is causing usually mild common cold become severe. But since there is no information on the vaxx status, it is nearly impossible to know.

As for your second sentence, when you feel like being hit by a bus, you probably would want to know if it is COVID, regardless of your vaccination status.

        Have a nice day.

    Great news.

But let’s still lock up everyone that is complying with their vaccinations
Instead of being beacon of common sense
Cayman is the laughing stock of the world

In the airport you have Travel time employee dressed in a hazmat suit next to an airport employee in a Hawaiian shirt ?

There is no reason or common sense in these rules
You are destroying the economy of these islands over fear

But it doesn’t matter to any civil servant or politician because you are still being paid
The whole situation now and the PACT government decisions is asinine

    OPEN UP CAYMAN

  8. Anonymous says:

Panton and PACT followed the science until they didn’t and panicked over a small outbreak which they stated were inevitable. The medical community has stated that they are prepared and welcome the chance to serve and protect the community. CIG is lead by a premier and cabinet that is grossly inexperienced and has no plan. Cayman people did their part and got the jab. Enough, open the island now.

  9. Anonymous says:

The juvenile privilege being spouted…these island are somewhat restricted access, not closed. Flexible travellers can easily buy a ticket and come and go, like tens of thousands have. Visitors can come if they can abide. The friction point is the inbound quarantine policy. That should be the focus of solution finding, rather than falsely lamenting that people are somehow trapped here, that really aren’t. These are not normal times anywhere, and you can still get where you need to go, if you want to. At this point in the marathon, the vaccines are a bit like wearing half a parachute against Delta. I don’t want to necessarily jump out of an airplane wearing that, yet so many, fatigued or bored perhaps, blind to the realtime miscalculations elsewhere, seem eager to test theirs out, thinking the loudest voice wins.

    • anonymous says:

That is not true. I was barely allowed on my flight because while my husband is a work-permit holder, I am not. She told me “it doesn’t work that way.” I even provided a negative covid test!

    • Anonymous says:

It’s the expensive, hard to get flights that have no connections to anywhere, on top of a week long quarantine, even though we have been fully vaccinated since January (and about to get boosters.) We are one and a half hours away on a straight line but 10-14 hours via Miami layover at double the usual cost. There is no reason for this. Cayman is not covid free, what is the big fear. We did the 14 day quarantine once, but never agan.

    • Anonymous says:

The only flight option (Cayman Airways) doesn’t actually have flights available, their posted future flight schedule is not real! They cancel booked flights and no flights are available in the next 30 days for example. In that sense, yes, people are trapped and unable to leave and re-enter Cayman!

  10. Anonymous says:

I’ll play the devils advocate for a moment.
The government has admitted that we do not know how many people live on this island. Crazy to think about for how small it is.
How do we know these numbers are accurate representations?
Do we take into consideration the people who have been vaccinated who do not live here? Either snow birds or those on work contracts who have since left.
Will the census make any difference? Who knows how accurate a report that will be or if there will be a vaccination question on it.

    • Anonymous says:

Stop fixating on numbers. You could be surprised how a real life will play out.

    • Anonymous says:

what other country in the world is using a population census excuse as a reason for not opening up????
      welcome to wonderland.

  11. Asking says:

I’m wondering if the government takes into consideration students and some parents that are overseas who have taken the jab or are these persons not? Some of these students got their jabs in the UK and US and of course there is no record in the CI files of them having the jab.

CNS, would you be able to answer this for us please?

    Thx

    • Anonymous says:

      Get a life!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Considering they aren’t living here that woukd make it look like we are more vaccinated than we are. Plus there were a lot of foreigner s coming in to get shots. When I went there was an American college student getting hers. Her father lives here but she lives with her mother in the USA.

      • Anonymous says:

Yet they count those who received vaccinations while visiting family, those who were on long since expired work permits, those who have chosen to leave to escape the oppressions, etc.

Bottom line, the number don’t mean shit.

        Open the damn border already.

  13. Anonymous says:

Governments next opening plan will require a 120% vaccination rate.
All children will be shipped to the brac.
Outdoor crowds will be limited to no more than four people Mon-Sat.
    Two people on a Sunday.
Date will be set for Oct 14th 2025.

That should give them enough time to get their sh1t sorted.

    • Anonymous says:

Those “fall where they may” proponents, who believe they are 100% bulletproof, either aren’t keeping up with current events, or don’t understand the limits of the protection that went into their arm, derived from originating strain of almost two years ago.

  16. Anonymous says:

Thank you CNS for reporting these stats! It’s incredible how afraid the government is despite the nearly 100% vaccination rate among the vulnerable age groups.

CNS: Just to note that this is the first dose. There’s a five-week gap between the first dose and full vaccination protection – three weeks between doses and then two more weeks.

  17. We are safe says:

Bad news. There are lots and lots of breakthrough cases of COVID for those who believe they are immune. You are not immune so don’t be surprised if opening up leads to you catching COVID.

Good news. If you are vaxxed, tell yourself that you won’t die when you catch COVID because you won’t. Parents, tell yourself that your children have a statistical probability of death from COVID of 0%. Also, for the unvaxxed, you only have a 00.03% chance of dying from COVID as well.

Even better news. All of these odds are reduced even more with early treatment of virus by monoclonal antibodies, ivermectin and/or hydroxychloroquine.

    • Anonymous says:

Had me right up until the donkey drugs. Agree that the vaccines from early last year are not necessarily a bulletproof vest today, but they are the best advantage we’ve got today.

Good god there is some absolute morons in this world. The poster above being one. If you want to take a horse dewormer and probably get sick, go to your vet. If you want a free life saving drug, get the vaccine.

      • Anonymous says:

Why would someone want to take horse dewormer when they can have the Nobel prize winning, multi faceted, doctor prescribed, safe, clinically tested for efficacy, administered more than a billion times human version of ivermectin. What are you, an idiot?

  18. Anonymous says:

There are lots and lots of breakthrough cases of COVID.

    • The Frog Chorus says:

Yes, because efficacy simply means reduced chance of infection on any occasion. But delta is so infectious basically everyone will get it jabbed or not. So “breakthrough” cases are neither here nor there. What matters is what happens when the vaccinated get it and the answer is “not that much”. Covid has, and please I don’t want to sound Trumpist about out, essentially become the flu for the vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

Very, very few of which get sick or die. What’s your point? Lots and lots of cases of flu too. Want to shut down the economy for that as well?

  19. Anonymous says:

93% isn’t enough! We should definitely be over 100%.

110% is a better number to aim at. 😉

  20. Anonymous says:

Cayman has one of the highest vaccination rates i the world. The Pfizer stops spread and death and hospital, including delta. We always knew that. What a ridiculous state we are in. The rest of the world was open ages ago. We are a joke.

    • Anonymous says:

The joke could be your grasp fo science: the current iteration of approved vaccines do not necessary halt spread. With waning 40-50% efficacy against Delta, we can read from elsewhere that “breakthrough” cases do happen, basically half the time, though perhaps not as serious to those people that are only concerned with DEATH as their benchmark for community health and safety.

    • Anonymous says:

We also have a Premier who doesn’t want the first death from Covid of a resident to occur on his watch. He would rather bury the tourist industry, because he thinks he can paper over that by giving away free money to anyone who asks for it.

  21. Anonymous says:

we had 90% of over 660’s done in april…hence why alden said we could then open up but to then change his mind a week later.the only questions from here on should be:

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

Wow. I’m convinced now it’s not the unvaxxed but rather the segment in the pie chart labeled “The uneducated Vaxxed who believe Covid will be eradicated from the planet if we stay shut down, and then it will be safe to open”
How can anyone with a working brain think Covid will disappear.
The overwhelming percentage of vaxxed want to open up NOW. That was the point in the program.

Bermuda has a lower vaccination rate than Cayman, especially in people 50 and above. I don’t have firm details but it is something between 70% and 80%. With 96% of our older people vaccinated I don’t think we would see the same result when we open our borders.

      • Anonymous says:

Sure, let’s open up because YOU don’t THINK we would see the same result…SMH…seems like sound advice.
This isn’t an easy answer, but I for one would absolutely cringe at the thought of someone dying because so many decided that their financial well being was more important that someone’s life. Even if it was a stranger and I’m well aware that people die everyday, but some of the comments I see out there in social media are quite shocking to me. People best to keep your opinions to yourself these days as you never know who will one day be your next employer, landlord, anyone that may be of impact to your life and trust me when I say, there are a NUMBER of names I will remember…

These numbers are amazing and show that the population of Cayman has done their part and is ready to reopen.

The correct steps to take now will be to continue to wear masks in supermarkets, medical offices, public transport, and businesses that choose to do so.

The recent outbreaks have put us on guard and shown us that:

1/ Covid zero is not a realistic goal

2/ We should maintain precautions where possible

3/ Vaccinated people are at a low risk of serious illness

4/ Children are at a low risk of serious illness

It’s time to get this country back on track. It’s time to allow freedom of travel to vaccinated people as the rest of the world is.

I have lost all faith in PACT sticking with any part of their reopening plan. More people getting vaccinated is great but will it really matter to a government that reacted out of fear when we had a community outbreak? Even if we get to 100% of all eligible people fully vaccinated I doubt it will be enough.

I do not trust them. They have taken away our credibility with airlines, booking agents, tourists, etc. If killing tourism for the next 3-5 years was the goal of PACT they have absolutely achieved that goal.

Current Government needs to commence a community to community education program, that contracting C19 does not equal death, especially when you are vaccinated!

    Open 14th Oct.

  42. Common Sense says:

This is great news! Based on this information it should be concluded that we are definitely ready to open the borders.

Not all age groups are at equal risk, and those that are at higher risk are over 90% vaccinated. This is what matters, rather than the arbitrary target of 80% across all age groups.

Kids under 12 are extremely low risk (https://www.bbc.com/news/health-57766717), so let’s open up!

    • Anonymous says:

I know many fully vaccinated people who would happily keep the borders closed. We have no clear data about the long term impacts of COVID infection, we have limited data about the long term effectiveness of the vaccine, we continue to be at risk of new vaccine-resistant variants developing and reaching our shores so long as COVID continues to run rampant globally, and life without the scourge of tourism and living with total freedom to go about your daily life without so much of a thought about COVID have been an absolute blessing in terms of the environment and mental health.

      • Anonymous says:

        Well that’s just stupid.

It’s unattainable anytime this year, if you remove the 1,000+ persons that cannot be jabbed due to medical reasons and the 4,000+ children under 12 that are not eligible.

        • Anonymous says:

While you have a point, your numbers are off. The population under the age of 12 is between 8000 and 9000. The number of persons who can’t be vaccinated for legitimate medical reasons is closer to 7.

        • STX says:

I think that was the point. Unattainable, any time, until such time as the vaccine for the 12+ old kidos, then more time to get that group covered (even though it isn’t necessary), and then the next group 5 to 11, and so on, and so on. When the loans come due, when the CIG starts squeezing the remaining productive industries for coin – then they will open.

With stats like this, Cayman is almost at maximum protection. I don’t understand what good waiting until some mythical future date to allow visitors will do. How are we or the world going to be any different?

These draconian closures are futile. A zero-COVID policy at all costs is not creative or smart.

We are gong backwards abandoning a communicated plan and in fact INCREASING quarantine.

And yet, we threw away our credibility with visitors and associated airlines as to our reopening plans because certain members of government engaged in histrionics. Pretty sure the P in PACT these days is better associated with Pathetic.
