(CNS): The Cayman Islands had a close shave with Tropical Storm Ida as the system is now a hurricane and is expected to strengthen into an extremely dangerous major hurricane before it reaches the US Gulf Coast, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Ida reached Cuba’s Isle of Youth Friday afternoon with wind speeds of 75mph with higher gusts. The local weather forecasters said that the outer bands of Ida could still cause heavy rain in Cayman this evening. The NHC said Hurricane Ida, which is travelling at 15mph heading northwest, is expected to strengthen rapidly once it moved into the Gulf of Mexico.

What has been learned, if anything, with Grace and Ida passing?

    • Do hazard management people have a list of people who are elderly and disabled living alone?
    • Who checks on them before and after a disaster? Who helps them if they need to get into a shelter?
    • Does CUC have a list of people whose life depends on electricity supply and they are a priority?

What if Ida was Cat.3-4, would HM and National Guard coordinate their efforts to save the most vulnerable living alone?

With all communication literally gone dead during Grace and Ida, Cayman hazard management is atrocious.

Agreed, ironic really that they only seem to communicate via their website and that communication channel is usually the first to go in a storm. As much use as a chocolate fireguard. Couldn’t organize a pi$$ up in a brewery.

    Just science. No luck
