PACT members get vaccinated, May 2021

(CNS): A single cash prize of CI$100,000 has been donated by the Caymanian firm DMS for a prize draw to entice all residents here to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The announcement comes as the number of newly vaccinated people over the last 24 hours increased by only 45. Given that several thousand people still need to get either the second or both shots in the next five weeks to reach government’s 80% vaccination rate by 9 September and the soft border reopening, officials hope this significant cash prize will work as an incentive to get those who are still vaccine hesitant to roll up their sleeve. The aim is to reach the herd immunity levels needed across the islands to protect everyone from the return of the virus once the border opens.

The “get VAXXed” lottery programme was officially launched Thursday. DMS spokesperson Adrienne Politowicz said the company, which is owned by Don Seymour, understood the importance of achieving herd immunity and the government’s vaccination target. “After 16 months of border closure and the imminent threat posed by the Delta variant, we want to inspire and mobilize our entire community to get Caymanians back to work,” she said.

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan, who had been looking for a sponsor to create the prize draw, said it was reassuring to see the private sector continuing to step and help the Cayman Islands reach the vaccination target. “We are all in this together, so I encourage everyone to get vaccinated if they haven’t already, bring their family and friends, and get a chance to win $100,000,” he said.

There are two ways to win the big prize: first “get vaXXed” and second “refer a friend”. Both newly and previously vaccinated people who got their shots here by the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) are eligible for entry in the lottery. Those referring friends must accompany the unvaccinated person to the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for both shots and they will be able to enter the draw on the second dose visit. The more you refer, the more entries into the draw you get.

In addition to the Grand Prize, spot cash prizes will also be randomly awarded at COVID-19 vaccine clinics. A valid form of ID and HSA proof of vaccination must be presented to win spot prizes.

Premier Wayne Panton said that reopening the country safely was of paramount importance to the government. “It is our collective duty to continue making Cayman one of the safest places in the world,” he said. “We aim to become the highest vaccinated and safest population worldwide.”

According to the CNN Health COVID-19 Global Vaccination Tracker, the Cayman Islands currently ranks fifth globally.

In one of the comments reference is made to John Hopkins prof saying natural immunity through infection is 6.7 times stronger protection vs vaccination. Science has always indicates that but that is not the preferred way. Edward Jenner discovered small pox vaccination through that. We all know if we get chikenpox or Measles in childhood it gives lifelong immunity. That was ok when we didnt have vaccine. But that immunity is good after suffering and if death doesnt occur.
Pl dont give wrong conclusions and some people may get persuaded by that.
Natural immunity is after the fact of infected or sick. We want not to get infected and sick if infected so pl take vaccination

Just give up. Nobody is going to change their mind about covid, vaccines and immunity, no matter how hard you could try to convince or bribe.

      Find something else to do.

This is so wrong and arse about face. Those who have not been bothered to get vaccinations and holding up Cayman’s progress, now get to seek a reward for now going for a vaccination. Being a senior citizen I was one of the first where I met many friends I had not seen for years in West Bay. They met the cause admirably seeking no reward but doing what in their conscience was right.

Many were from the poorer element of Cayman. It is sad they are not entitled to the proceeds of any lottery. They do however have the satisfaction of knowing they made their decision not just to help themselves but above all assisting others because they have been vaccinated.

Sadly it reflects the population of today. In the 70s Caymanians were acutely aware of each other’s problems and reached out to their neighbours. They would have been vaccinated in a week.

Some one called CDC as liars. We dont want to trust CDC not Public Health England. So just trust God. Trusting God means not to simly shutting the door but to follow the path he shows.
God sent Small pox vaccine polio vaccine etc throgh CDC John Hopkins etc and we have been protected against them and eradicated them. Let us trust CDC and protect ourselves.
CdC says dont drink and drive. If u dont trust that try it your family will know of it as u wouldnt be there to know what happened
Pl allow people to get vaccinated. Dont spoil them.

    • Big Bobo In West Bay says:

Our Education Minister is not a believer in science. That has a lot to do with why our public education system is dismal and why the majority of Caymanians refuse to get vaccinated.

We are a very backward people whether we want to admit it or not.

No leadership at all from our Education Minister at these times when we need education.

Meanwhile according to the HSA vaccination center schedule vaccinations are not available on 11 out of 31 days in August. They are interested in PR not vaccinating people.

    • Anonymous says:

It is only 8 days out of 31 not open. Closed on Sundays and Mondays. Thursday clinics will be in the districts.

It is a poor excuse after 6 months to complain about the schedule. They are down to a few trickles of people each hour. The largest cohort that is unvaccinated is under 30s, so hard to believe people in this group cant make it to ORIA or Camana Bay.

  7. A new chapter says:

For the past 18 months it’s all about COVID, vaccine and God. With the latter there is white elephant in the room. Is there one God; one God with different rules; many Gods with their own rules; and where are you getting your information from and what solidified your beliefs that God exist. Religious leaders, pastors these are questions to ponder.

    • Anonymous says:

I don’t believe in god. I believe in healthcare systems and vaccines

    • Assurance says:

This may be the time to prove for yourself, the existence of God by getting assurance ahead of the event, you will be ok.

Otherwise you are going on prayers, hoping to be ok at the end of the event.

The science is giving assurance the vaccinated will be ok.

  8. Anonymous says:

As the vaxxed persons have only mild symptoms even if they catch COVID, they may not even get themselves tested, but as they are still equally capable to transmitting the Delta variant, they would actually pose greater risk to those who are unvaccinated for medical reasons. Because if an unvaccinated person catches the Delta variant, they are more than likely to have symptoms and hence would get tested and find out whether they are positive or not and hopefully take precautions not to go near the vulnerable ones who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons.

    • Anonymous says:

That is why you need to get vaccinated. As the uk has shown, with a high vaccination rate and sensible people (stats show since fully opening up on July 19 people are still restricting their social interactions and wearing masks in busy places despite the rules ending and no restrictions), the health service won’t be overrun and it’s mainly the unvaccinated in hospital. We just need to make sure when we open in cayman that our healthcare system can manage the unvaccinated and niot get overrun,,, that is always the aim, the government seems to think eighty per cent vaccination if the whole population is what will keep deaths and hospital admissions manageable and not overrun the health services. If 80 per cent of over 12s get the jab it’s likely we won’t overwhelm the cayman hospitals and deaths will be low, likely around 50.

    • Anonymous says:

This is the most bizarre anti-vax argument I have ever heard!

    • the void says:

consider that a symptomatic person has a significantly higher viral load and therefore will transmit the virus much more easily than an asymptomatic person.

  9. Anonymous says:

CNS – Is refer a friend only for those who are already vaccinated? If someone isn’t vaccinated for medical reasons, but would refer a friend or family to get the jab, could the unvaccinated person be entered into the draw?

  10. Anonymous says:

Disgusting liars these folks from CDC. And how can you trust them at all. “A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that unvaccinated individuals who have had COVID-19 are twice as likely to face reinfection as individuals who have received the vaccine.”

Twice as likely to get reinfection with natural immunity if the vaccine provides no immunity against Delta?

How do you reconcile the CDCs claims against the below and pretty much every study outside of US that showed natural immunity as vastly superior and producing much lower viral load on second infection.

“Dr. Marty Makary, a professor at John Hopkins School of Medicine, during an appearance on The Vince Coglianese Show, said individuals formerly infected with COVID-19 are seven times more likely then vaccinated people to fight off the virus.

“It appears that natural immunity is better against the Delta variant. When you get infected with COVID, your body’s immune system develops antibodies to the entire surface of the virus,” Makary said. “Not just the slight protein that the vaccines gives you, but the entire surface. And so you get a more diverse antibody portfolio in your system.”

Makary said data from Israel revealed that natural immunity appears to be 6.7x more effective than being vaccinated when it comes to fighting off COVID-19.

“One of the great failures of our medical leadership has been ignoring the half of America with natural immunity, which is the half of non-vaccinated folks.”

    • Anonymous says:

This is what Dr. Marty Makary said on Thursday:

“The vaccines are so good at protecting against death from COVID-19 that those who are immune can feel good about living life without having to worry about becoming severely ill. Vaccines downgrade the infection to a mild seasonal virus – one we must learn to live with for years to come.

Those who choose not to get vaccinated are making a poor health decision at their own individual risk.”

      • Mumbichi says:

Two of us researching for an hour were unable to find any variation of that quote as attributed by Dr. Makary.

An attribution is often useful to put a period at the end of your assertation, not to mention highly advisable per DMCA guidelines, which admittedly are not enforceable here, and difficult to enforce anywhere.

CNS: I found it in 30 seconds. See here.

    • Anonymous says:

Your argument is illogical. CDC (in your first paragraph) was comparing reinfection risk between vaccinated and unvaccinated people (with unvaccinated twice as much risk).

Then your other paragraphs are comparing natural infection to vaccines (not vaccinated vs unvaccinated, which is what CDC was commenting on).

You are comparing apples to oranges and thus your argument in nonsense.

    • Mumbichi says:

See CNS link below for attribution to your quotes.

  14. Pastor Alfredo says:

    Here’s an idea.

If you must bribe the population to get vaccinated then offer the $100k prize and the draw happens on 9th September whether or not the 80% target is hit. And the draw is only open to people who have had two jabs by 9th September. Anyone who hasn’t had their jab by that point was never going to have it anyway. In reality, most of these 8,000 “holdouts” probably don’t even exist because of the massively overly cautious overestimate of the population number (it’s probably more like 65,000 total population, not 71,000).

Do the draw on 9th September, declare an end to the tourism stipend and then immediately afterwards cut a ribbon at the airport and declare the island open for business. There’s literally nothing else we can do unless we’re all content to live like hermits forever. I, for one, am not.

It’s all worth nothing if we don’t have freedom.

    Pastor Alfredo

Seems community responsibility begins and ends with Covid and quite frankly that is madness! People die from influenza, measles, chicken pox have we ever had guilt trips put on us for not getting those vaccines? People die needing organ transplants have we ever been vilified because we haven’t elected to give away organs when we are dead? People are starving and dying in their millions, are our wages garnished so we can save them? We aren’t forced to give blood either. People also die from not being able to afford medical treatment are hospitals, doctors and drug companies forced to lower their fees, or provide free drugs? But it seems selfishness only enters the conversation when it comes to COVID, funny that.

    • Anonymous says:

Because it is a highly transmissible disease can result in a healthcare system being overwhelmed.

Left completely unchecked with no mitigation, it brings a healthcare system to its knees. March/April 2020, New York, Milan, Madrid, London. In Milan they were storing corpses in ice arenas.

….But now we have vaccines to blunt this impact. If you dont understand this after 17 months, you never will.

    • Anonymous says:

Actually you do have to have measles, chicken pox vaccines etc if you want to attend schools. These vaccines (just like the covid vaccine) SAVE LIVES as these diseases are highly contagious. Fortunately organ failure, car accidents, starvation are not highly contagious. It is unfortunate that people suffer through these issues but taking care of these issues is not the same collective responsibility. Understand the difference??

ALT, are you paying attention, – incentivise, not victimise, it’ll do you well.

The pro-covid19 vaccine crowd is still not trying to understand or even listen to those who are making cases to not take the vaccine. Putting in these raffles, lotteries or having food vouchers or gift certificates shows that the words of those who do not want to take the vaccine are falling on deaf ears.

We hear arguments like “Do it for others” and “Dont be selfish” but as time goes on we have to look back and run through the events that have transpired.

In the beginning, we were called conspiracy theorists and that we got our information from the ether or “Facebook” (whatever that means), but some people saw this for what it truly was. An attempt to control the masses. This is not even trying to make the case the vaccine was intentionally created, only looking ahead at the opportunity this created for those in governments and those that control governments.

We knew 14 days to slow the spread was a lie, we are now into 500 days to slow the spread made up of continued restrictions with the idea that we are saving others.

We watched the goal posts move every single time when a target is set. Almost everytime a target was reached we were told it wasn’t enough and there’s still more to do. From the mask policy and social distancing to vaccination rates now to vaccination frequency.

Once we saw a variant of the virus we knew there would be an endless cycle of variants that would be used as the reason behind not being able to lift the restrictions. Here were are with Delta and I’m sure everyone will love to here Lamda and other greek alphabets are rounding the corner for us.

Now we’ve received vaccines from the every loving and caring Big Pharma. First it was get the vaccine shot to return to normal, which became get 2 shots to return to normal because the vaccine prevents the transmission of the virus and symptoms. Now it will soon be mandated to get three vaccine jabs if we want to return to normal but we have to wear masks because the virus is spreading from both vaccinated and unvaccinated See links below for my sources which is the CDC (which none of you will explore because if information is not in a 10 minute video format and it goes against your ideaology you won’t entertain it). So as this information is now being gathered on the vaccine results, ask yourselves if we will see a change in approach. I would be extremely surprised if governments change their approach based on new information. After all, lockdowns didn’t work the first time but they are still trying to enforce them.

    https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/07/30/1022867219/cdc-study-provincetown-delta-vaccinated-breakthrough-mask-guidance

    https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7031e2.htm?s_cid=mm7031e2_w

If you think getting vaccinated with 2 jabs will be the final action to return ourselves back to what we knew before, its my opinion that you are lying to yourself. It’s plain to see that no government in the world has any plan to return back to normal but you should ask yourself why. Why did governments (with a few exceptions) in the beginning seemingly take almost the exact same steps and to this day are repeating the same steps which didn’t work the first time? Big Pharma and Big businesses are the only ones profitting from this while the rest of us can’t even see what the next year is going to be like for our families.

Follow the money people. Trying to see why the other side is saying what they are saying might actually move everyone closer to the realisation that we are all being manipulated.

Again my friend, fear has taken over. If you want to lower your chances from getting sick from the virus please get the vaccine. My stance has never been for people to not get the vaccine. My stance is that we need to be honest with ourselves and call this thing out for what it is.

Those currently against the vaccine just want the freedom to choose what they put into their body. They are not comfortable taken the vaccine given the information we have, but if other people are then they are free to do so. We oppose the notion of mandatory vaccines, we oppose the borders being closed and we definitely oppose the notion that we are selfish or uncaring. If you believe the vaccine helps, then take it. We are not stopping you from doing that.

For instance, three studies from Canada, Singapore and Scotland have found that the Pfizer vaccine provides more than 90% protection against hospitalization and death.

Indeed, the Provincetown outbreak demonstrates the vaccines’ effectiveness.”

So you are omitting a very very important finding. That vaccinated people overwhelmingly do not get sick!

People should stop using the term “herd immunity” with respect to this virus (as CNS has again in this article). This concept is irrelevant with this virus. Hitting 80% will not mean the remaining 20% are protected by virtue of 80% having been vaccinated.

This variant is so infectious (CDC estimates that 1 person will infect on average 9 people) that only a limited amount of initial infection will spread. In addition, it is now established that vaccinated individuals can be a vector for spread for this variant (although on a more limited basis).

Herd immunity is ONLY relevant if we have a transmission-blocking vaccine. We don’t, at least with respect to Delta. Please stop using this term. The 20% WONT be protected by the 80%.

You will eventually encounter the virus some day; it is inevitable. So you want to best equip your body with a set of tools to fight your encounter, and that is in the form of the vaccine.

Lol… let’s say you’re in school being a good little noodle and getting your work done in a timely manner as you should, but the delinquents in the back of the class keep holding everyone back.

How would you feel if the teacher then said to the delinquents that they’d reward them with an extravagant field trip if they started doing their work.

    Yes, I’m salty.

Money won’t motivate the people that don’t want to get vaccinated.
Misinformation and churches is the cause.
    Focus should be on ignorance.

I guess I am too smart for my own good.
Ineligable for spot prizes … should of held out. LOL

    • Joe Nool says:

Obviously not that smart if you can’t understand that this reward is open to all. Try reading the article again; this time slowly.

      • Anonymous says:

Try reading his post – slowly lol. Says he is ineligible for the spot prizes – not the grand prize. Obviously not that smart yourself

We should be proud that we rank 5th. Very good. We shouldnt bribe to get vaccinated. We should educate public and let them seek vaccination. Very bad precedent set and we may fail in future vaccine programmes as public may wait for hand outs.always handsup not hand down

Excellent way to get into the good books of a new government.

    • Anonymous says:

Really..you think Don Seymour needs this Government??

Please stop trying to malign his good name and for doing something good for his country.

Don worked his ass off and became a billionaire on his own. He loves his country and is stepping up to the plate and doing a good thing.

I have never known of his name being called with anything for Government or making any deals or schemes like the past government did with DART.

Please stop trying to destroy his good reputation just because you don’t want to get vaccinated.

DMS – Thank you for providing a big carrot.

Government – Where is the stick?

Sometimes jackasses need both motivations for there to be any movement.

It is a sad state of affairs and embarrassing that we have to offer prizes to people to get a jab, but I would expect to be i the draw and have a chance of winning 100k even though I had my second dose in April.

I guess that’s what they call ‘gluttony’. God is watching.

The articles says Both newly and previously vaccinated people who got their shots here by the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) are eligible for entry in the lottery

    • Anonymous says:

Yes it may seem a bit embarrassing but the fact of the matter is they are doing it all over the world to try and get people to take the vaccine not just Cayman. Just the way it is. Unfortunately.

For my two cents you can blame it on the unintended consequences of the internet where people can easily promote and disseminate conspiracy theories and fake news daily.

      You are eligible!

    A few things.
    1. 80% is impossible
    2. Will the draw take place regardless of meeting the impossible target?
    3. If so, when?
    4. What happens when the impossible target is not met?

  36. Anonymous says:

Don’t see JuJu in that picture. How many PACT members are fully vaccinated Kenny? Tell us the truth now..

  37. Anonymous says:

And the draw will take place the day after 80% is achieved?

  38. Anonymous says:

Since gambling is now legal, when should we expect the first casino to open it’s doors?

  39. Anonymous says:

great stuff by dms(private sector again stepping up)…why cig did not do this 6 months ago is beyond me.
    btw 80% still won’t happen….so what is plan b?

  40. Anonymous says:

There should be some fine print. 8,000 need to get vaccinated, for the draw to take place!
