Store boss demands staff reveal vaccine status

(CNS): Al Thompson, the president and owner of Cayman’s largest retail hardware store, is pressing all of his staff to get vaccinated and has told them to “stop reading nonsense on social media” and “stop listening to stupid people” with no medical knowledge spreading propaganda. Falling short of mandating the vaccine in order for people to keep their jobs, he is asking staff to demonstrate that they have either been vaccinated or have a letter from a doctor confirming a health reason that prevents them from getting the shots.

Al Thompson’s letter to staff

The internal letter to staff says that this will allow the store to assess its vaccination level, but Thompson also makes it clear that annual bonuses for 2021 are going to be reserved for those who have been vaccinated.

The letter, which has been circulated on social media, warned of complacency over the virus and pointed to the vaccine as the best hope for saving lives. Writing in capital letters for emphasis, the boss told his staff to “GO AND GET VACCINATED”, as he said those who are vaccinated will stand a better chance of surviving a future outbreak here.

Cayman’s national vaccination rate remains stalled again at 67%, as the clinic was closed Monday. There is now just over six weeks before government intends to open the borders to those with verifiable vaccination papers, increasing the risk of spread into the Cayman Islands community as a result of breakthrough infections.

Mandating vaccination for work permit holders is currently on the cards but amendments to the immigration law or changes in regulations have not yet been made. The Health Services Authority has, however, now made vaccination a condition for its staff on new and renewed permits. While the labour laws and Bill of Rights will make mandatory vaccination for local staff legally challenging, there appears to be no impediment to introducing it as a condition for work permit holders, given that there are existing medical requirements for overseas staff.

The vaccination clinic re-opened Tuesday at the Owen Roberts Airport and will also be open tomorrow. On Thursday there will be a district clinic on Marina Drive in Prospect and at Camana Bay on Friday.

Already gone buddy! Long time ago.

Even the US Hospitals allow staff not to get vaccinated if:
    – they have antibodies to COVID in the last 3 months
    – they are exempted on health related reasons

Is someone mandates experimental jabs for his employees he is an utter idiot. People will always choose Body Autonomy over jobs which today are plentiful.

In the US there is a huge shortage of workforce in many industries. School bus drivers jobs don’t require High School Diploma anymore. Walmart offers to pay 100% college tuition including books and raised hourly wages…

Stop and think for a second what is going to happen in Cayman if people leave jobs? Don’t worry about them for a moment, worry how it will affect you? Would you want a nurse that is not certified to run your ventilator? Would you want an unlicensed and undereducated repairmen fix your a/c or maintain your pool? Think again!

P.S. United States. The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution begins with “The right of the people to be secure in their persons…”, a recognition of the universal and fundamental natural right of bodily integrity, or Body Autonomy

The US is not much different from any other country of comparable size/population.

You can think again. Many won’t be shopping there anymore and you can bet the majority of people from overseas won’t step foot in there. I know I wouldn’t, couldn’t pay me enough to go into that place.

100 % with you @11.50. I will never go in there again.

I don’t think you will be missed and for the people coming from overseas they will be vaccinated or had to go through quarantine so I don’t think it will be an issue for them.

          Highly doubt it

      • Anonymous says:

        Nope. Constitution protects Body Autonomy.

    • Anonymous says:

Vaccine passports have been used in the US before during the smallpox epidemic. There are exceptions written into the law for public health reasons.

Also the unvaccinated are the minority here. Most people want to get on with life so I doubt there is going to be a mass exodus of people. I personally don’t want to work next to someone who hasn’t been vaccinated. Unless of course they have a legitimate medical reason for not doing so.

      • Anonymous says:

Talk about superiority complex. Just because you have the vaccine doesn’t mean that you won’t get the virus. A person without the vaccine for whatever reason is still a human being just like you. Get over yourself.

Following what the USA does is nothing short of crazy!

Current mandates apply to vaccines that have been fully approved by the FDA.

The so called COVID “vaccine” is not fully approved an is still experimental immune system booster. Also remember that at least 25% population of any country is ineligible for the jabs or real vaccine due to underlying health issues.

The EUA authority requires less evidence of safety and efficacy compared to full FDA approval (usually based on the duration of safety and efficacy data available).

In the USA vaccine mandates are subject to reasonable accommodation requests under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Conclusion: Employees couold all walk out leaving the Employer to his own devices.

Pretty soon people and employers wanting to mandate the jabs will end-up without work force-store clerks, mechanics, nurses, bus drivers, repairmen, cleaning staff, waiters, construction workers etc… creating social unrests and economic collapse. Only deaf, blind and dumb don’t see that coming.

    • Truth says:

This is the mob mentality at work. If your not one of us then you are now an enemy and need to be eradicated. We understand. Your scared of dying from something you can catch from an innocent person. Now that innocent person is your enemy. Let the oppression of innocents begin. Expect them to fight back like their lives might depend on it

      • Anonymous says:

What a load of narcissistic BS. You are not innocent if you choose not to get vaccinated and put lives in jeopardy as a result.

        • Anonymous says:

The unvaccinated are the minority here. Most people have been vaccinated and just want to move on with life. There’s not going to be a lot of people quitting their jobs and causing economic collapse.

Based on the comments and likes here, there seems to be a lot of support for this. Businesses should take note.

10.11 – Quite the opposite. ALT will regret this decision. He’s made his stance clear. As time goes on and more comes out. He will look back at this as a very, very foolish move. He has just lost business, maybe not initially, but the stain is there and it can not be erased.

          • Anonymous says:

No he won’t..He will benefit greatly and his customers and staff will thank him for taking a stance..The majority of 20% anti-vaxxers will still shop there and those that are foolish enough not to, they will not be missed.

    • If you make sh!te up, at least make it semi-plausible... says:

What part of your azz did you pull this out of:

“at least 25% population of any country is ineligible for the jabs or real vaccine due to underlying health issues”

Any number of countries including Cayman have already vaccinated well over 80% of older age categories.

  7. Anonymous says:

And I’m going to spend a lot more there because I support his decision.

  8. All must take it says:

Are we saying that all employees should be vaccinated irrespective of status or are we saying that only expats should be vaccinated. If the latter, that is discrimination. We have a public health crisis and all should be treated equally under the law. The mandate needs to apply to all caymanians and expats. The only exceptions should be as a result of other medical issues. The goal should be 100% vaccination among all eligible people and this can only come with a mandate that all eligible people take it. I am Caymanian and I took it but there are many Caymanians that I know who have refused to take it. They must also be held to account. Don’t persecute one group and not the other.

    • Anonymous says:

Expats are coming here to work and live. It is our right to tell anyone coming here to live here particularly those on work permits that they must abide by our rules and Public Health law. They are guests in our house and should abide by our rules. I would go into your house and tell you I am not taking off my shoes to come in just because you said so..I would tell you to get your ass out..period

      • All to be vaxxed says:

You miss the point grasshopper. The issue is not following the rules it is application of the rules to serve an important purpose. The purpose is the protection of society. What is the point of all expats being vaccinated and only some or no Caymanians. There is a pandemic and the only way to combat it at this point is to be vaccinated. The rule is to protect all and so the presumption is that the reason why you have the rule is because you are protected and don’t want to be exposed. So it is perfectly reasonable to demand that expats be vaccinated but you too must must follow the rule for your own protection. All arms must be vaxxed, period, for this thing to work.

      • Anonymous says:

That’s where your comment went south buddy. The self-righteous “Expatriates” that come here to work and live, expect to be able to write their own rules that all whom they consider beneath them abide by while creating special exemptions from themselves and their cohorts. They consider themselves superior to any native where they domicile. This is not just a Cayman Islands issue. It’s all wrapped up in imperialist, pigmentocracy, and plantocracy attitudes. What is unique about the CI is that we’ve implemented a foreign-centric attitude which has been a focal point of our society for so long (since the development boom), it is difficult to assert any authority over these common citizens who readily denigrate the local Caymanians, even those in authority without any consequence.

  9. Anonymous says:

So all you people congratulating him, have you asked yourselves why he hasn’t mandated it? If we mandate people to be injected with an experimental vaccine it won’t stop there and is against everything Western civilisation stands for. The ignorance with people name calling and labelling is astounding. An anti vaxxer is not someone who is hesitant about putting a brand new biologically engineered solution into their body. They need to be convinced my the medical fraternity not politicians or store owners. This medication contains ingredients that can penetrate the blood brain barrier. We still don’t know how much is getting through or the long term effects on how your immune system will fight cancer cells. There are searchable scholarly articles on this. So far from what I can see the risks are still low, but never-the-less real.

  10. Anonymous says:

I don’t understand. If you are vaccinated, then you are immune to Covid. What does it matter if other people are not vaccinated? They will get sick but you will be fine. Just like if someone is vaccinated for measles.

    • Anonymous says:

Because unvaccinated people cause further spread, allowing variants to mutate into other strains that the current vaccines may not offer full protection against.

    • Anonymous says:

The line has been drawn. What side do you stand on? I would take the Vaccine but I can not due to medical reasons. Both sides hate me now and there are not enough of those like me to start our own side. I am now an oppressed minority and it looks like in my future I will be held down and vaccinated or forced into a containment camp to be dealt with later.

      • Anonymous says:

I honestly don’t think anyone is opposed to people who cannot get vaccinated for legitimate medical reasons. Even in the letter from ALT, they mention bringing in a note from a doctor explaining why you can’t get vaccinated.

This is actually protecting people who are unable to get vaccinated. It’s the responsible thing to do.

    • Anonymous says:

The problem you got with that statement is the fact this is a pandemic contagion of a novel virus with no real treatments or cures available. If you get infected while unvaccinated you will allow the virus to replicate to a far higher degree than if you were vaccinated. The virus then has more opportunity to mutate and its because you choose not to get a small jab in your arm. Those extra mutations may cause a variant that can evade the vaccine. We are already seeing this with the Delta variant. You may not get covid tomorrow, but maybe a year, 2 years from now? Seems inevitable that all of us one day will catch this virus. So that’s why your decision not to get the shot affects those of us who did.

    • Al Catraz says:

One – the vaccine is not 100% effective. Nothing in life is 100%. The more people who receive the vaccine, the safer EVERYONE is. Two – not everyone can take the vaccine. Obviously you don’t care about children who can and do die from this disease because they are exposed to adults like you who do not care. There are also people with immune disorders or other conditions which are not compatible with the vaccine. They depend on other people to get vaccinated and stop the spread.

  11. Pandemic of the unvaccinated says:

“Increasing the risk of spread into the Cayman Islands community as a result of breakthrough infections”

Because like any other vaccine IN THE WORLD, it does not protect you 100%. BUT what it does do is minimise symptoms and suppress mutation for an even more violent strain.

As evidenced with the two travellers, one had ZERO symptoms an the other had minimal symptoms.

    Great Job, AL’T!

Where are all of the other big business owners on this island? It’s time for all of you to take a bold stand like Al’T has just done.

CUC, Flow, Digicel, Cox Lumber, Kirk Hardware, Kirk Supermarket, Hurleys, Fosters, DART, Decco, NCB, McAlpine..just these would be a good start..

By the way, Government needs to step up too, particularly with front line workers..What happened to putting the law in place to have all work permit holders vaccinated? It needs to be done now!

    • Nobody says:

A law to vaccinate all expats but not all Caymanians? Please just try to do that now and see what happens. There is a good chance because this is Cayman but it would be like watching a man cut off his legs because he stubbed his big toe.

Randy Merren, Woody Foster, Tom Guyton, when are you guys going to step up to the plate and do what Al’T has just done? There is strength in numbers albeit something Caymanians are not always good at..

If you don’t step up now you will be putting your staff and your customers in jeopardy once we re-open.

Do what’s right for your staff, your customers and most of all for Cayman!

  20. Robert Mugabe IV says:

So, whats next? Is ALT going to demand his customers prove that they are vaccinated before going into his store?
Will he follow the latest craziness from the USA where some states are demanding both vaccinated and unvaccinated wear masks again indoors?
The CDC doesn’t seem to know what is going on.

  21. Anonymous says:

Thank you Al’T for this bold move.

I am so happy to see the private sector stepping up and doing what is right for the country.

Now the Government needs to ensure that all teachers especially those that have left the island and returning as well as any newly recruited teachers and support staff are vaccinated.

In fact they need to put the Law or Act in place to mandate vaccinations for all work permit holders. let’s not wait until we re-open to get this done. Put the law in place now and we will see a good increase in vaccinations.

  22. Islanddreams says:

    • Anonymous says:

That costs too much! Their bottom line is the priority. Perfect reason to pay out less in bonuses. They really do not care about anyone’s health. They just want the economy to get back to “normal” so they can make profits like they used to pre-Covid.

You have not been vaccinated stop lying here.

    • Al Catraz says:

Thank goodness you will not be there, because otherwise people would have no choice than to be exposed to your unvaccinated self.

      • Anonymous says:

But if people are vaccinated, why are you worried? Do you have doubts about the efficacy of the virus?

        • Anonymous says:

The virus mutates in the unvaccinated causing more dangerous variations. But don’t let facts get in the way of your nonsense.

      • Anonymous says:

Still exposed to people’s personal hygiene which is also contagious!

  37. Anonymous says:

WTH am I reading y’all got to be kidding does the letter also say if I get sick and or die from the stupid vaccine ALT will take care of my burial and my family????

    • Anonymous says:

Stop with the nonsense. Do you think these vaccine makers will make money off your ass if you’re dead? No! You cease to be a consumer for life! They want you to live. Get vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

The letter also does not say you need to work at ALT. Read the entire letter! This time (unvaccinated) #youstayhome

    • Anonymous says:

No, but when you get sick or die from covid, I bet you would expect them to pay your medical insurance premiums even though you were dumb enough not to get vaccinated when you had the chance.

    • Anonymous says:

Extremely higher chance of getting sick and dying from covid. Will the virus take care of your burial and your family?

    • Anonymous says:

Sometimes I feel that vaccinated people feel that they are somehow above others just because they took the vaccine.

      This is a complex issue.

There are many who are ineligible to take the vaccines due to health reasons.

To state that these people (or others) should not be allowed to live normal lives simply because they are unvaccinated or are ineligible to be vaccinated is exactly what is wrong with society.

    • Anonymous says:

Extremely higher chance of you getting sick and dying from covid. Will the virus take care of your burial and your family?

Will you take responsibility of those you pass it onto? Will you take care of everyone should the virus have the chance to mutate further in your body? Will you say thank you to the nurses and doctors ?

Let’s hope none of the above happens, but doing your part just may be the better option.

    • Anonymous says:

No, you will most likely die of covid first. Before doing that though you will run up thousands of dollars at the HSA that I and other Caymanians will have to pay for whilst you are breathing through a ventilator unable to see your family and friends. I’m sure your family can throw together a few dollars to get Churchill to bury you. I don’t think AL”T will be burying anyone form taking the vaccine..Billions of people around the world have taken the vaccine..Are they all going to get sick and die..Is the 67% in Cayman that have taken the vaccine going to get sick and die too? Look at how many people have died from covid vs how many have died from taking the vaccine..If you can’t use common sense then I guess when the billions of us drop dead from taking the vaccine you can find another anti-vaxxer to repopulate the world..Like Al’T said, “pure foolishness..ugh!”

AL’T is trying to protect his staff and customers from anti-vaxx idiots like you who refuse to accept that the virus is real. Go get vaccinated before we reopen and take care of yourself.

    • Anonymous says:

You are being way over dramatic. No one in Cayman has died because of the vaccine. Relax and get your shot.

      • Anonymous says:

Where is the data to support your statement? Oh wait there is none. Lots of older people died on this island months after being vaccinated. Did they do an autopsy to confirm it wasn’t linked to the vaccine?

    • Anonymous says:

Seeing that the risk of serious sickness or death is greatly reduced once you have the vaccine. Perhaps you should donate to Mr. Thompson in appreciation for improving your survival chances.

  38. Anonymous says:

If you like ALT’s plan, you will like the frequent booster shots that will soon be necessary.

  39. Anonymous says:

Great job ALT. Good lead.others shld follow.

  40. Anonymous says:

Thank you Al’t for doing this. In the end, when we reopen your staff will be grateful to you even if they aren’t now.

Thank you for standing up for Cayman. I wish some of the owners of the other large organizations would do the same.

  41. Anonymous says:

    Good move Mr Thompson!

    Well done!

When is the PACT Government going to put in place the mandate that all expats workers must be vaccinated? Turks and Caicos has done this and had zero or little issues. We need to get this done as soon as possible or before we reopen.

Every day more and more people are coming to these islands on work permits and as new hires for the Government. The Government at the very least should mandate that any new employees coming into the civil service must be vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

No one can force you to take an experimental drug. They have to wait until it is approved.

      • Anonymous says:

No one is. Go work and shop somewhere else. I think having a group of stores that caters to non-vaccine folks would be awesome. It will be sad to see their customers one, by one become infected and get medical care paid for the rest of us.

  44. Anonymous says:

The large construction companies particularly those with large amounts of expat workers need to do the same thing. I’ll call them out Davenport, NCB . DART (Decco), Cayman Structural Group, McAlpine. There are more but if even if just these ones would stand up, we could be well on the way.

I work on a construction site run by one of of the large companies and there are a lot of the workers particularly the Jamaicans that are pretty much mocking the government that they are not going to get the vaccine. Of course, the conspiracy theories are rampant and for whatever reason they still continue to believe bloody foolishness.

    • Anonymous says:

I hope the day they make that comment that every Jamaican on every work site drop their hammers and head for the airport…they know their worth at least and it is more than a dangerous “jab” (the government too embarrassed to admit that they can’t honestly call it a vaccine”). I hope Jamaicans know how much power they have. And all the helpers too.

      • Anonymous says:

Plenty of Jamaicans willing to come to replace the ones here..stop talking foolishness,,If you were a Jamaican in the current state that Jamaica is in with covid and you were offered the opportunity to make a ton of money in a covid free country that is also willing to give you a free vaccine wouldn’t you go?

    • Anonymous says:

“I 💭 think all the remaining unvaccinated person that would get us up to the 80% threshold mark, are Jamaicans, don’t you think 🤔?”

    • Anonymous says:

If our goverment is so bad, why don’t they just head on back to there own country as things are so much better their anyway. If you want to be here then get the vaccine otherwise go back to where you came from.

  45. Anonymous says:

We’ll done, ALT! About time someone talked some sense into the anti-vaxers.

  46. Anonymous says:

We need all supermarkets, bars, restaurants and shops to make sure staff are vaccinated and check vaccines for customers to enter. Come on cayman… be responsible.

    • Anonymous says:

Do you know what you are asking for? You don’t have the right to demand someone’s confidential information and why would you be so prejudice against others’ rights to choose whether or not they want a vaccine?

      • Anonymous says:

And yet we have to be tested for HIV and Tuberculosis and revel those test results…. Seriously, get vaccinated.

  47. Anonymous says:

Kudos to Al’T and AL Thompsons.

All of the other Big Box stores and Grocery Stores need to fall in line now and get this done. The Government can only do so much. We need to do whatever it takes now to get past this and get our people protected so that we can open our borders safely and with the best chance of good health for all our citizens.

    ALT for Premier!

    • Anonymous says:

      Slow down lol

    • Anonymous says:

Well I wouldn’t go as far as Premier but certainly he has set the precedent that other leaders and owners that employ large amounts of employees particularly those that interact with the general public all day!

Thank you Al’T for taking this bold step for Cayman. Proud of you!

  49. Anonymous says:

    Good! Step up!

  50. Anonymous says:

Thank you Al’T. let’s see if Cox, Kirks, Fosters, and Hurley’s step up to the plate.

Let’s get on with folks. We are letting the minority continue to hold us hostage. There has been enough time and enough vaccinations available. We should have been way ahead of this long before now.

    • Anonymous says:

Agreed. Let’s also see the cable companies like flow and logic step up. Especially since they are sending technicians into people’s homes.

    • Anonymous says:

Let’s kill two birds with one stone. Vaccination cards required to enter any bar with a shooting or stabbing in the past 6 months. These establishments are obviously a danger to public health already.
