No change in vaccination rate over weekend

Cayman residents celebrate getting their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine

(CNS): Just 160 people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine since Thursday, which means that the percentage of the population who have had at least one shot remains stuck at 69%. The needle hasn’t moved at all on the rate of people who have received both doses, which has been stalled at 64% of the population since the 1 July. According to the latest figures, 45,691 people have been fully vaccinated but another 11,000 will need to be added to the total to reach government’s 80% national rate target.

If the borders are to reopen on 9 September, at least 1,350 people will need to have acquired both doses each week between now and then.

There were three positive COVID-19 test results among the travellers arriving this weekend, which means there are now four active cases of the virus among those in isolation, all of which are asymptomatic.

Surely it’s time to do what France and other countries are doing – when we open in October at stage 4 or whatever, unvaccinated have to have certain restrictions like no access to bars, restaurants, no tourist facing jobs, no travel off island and masks and social distancing in supermarkets. It’s the safest and fairest policy.

    • Anonymous says:

Masks and social distancing will have to come back regardless.

    • Anonymous says:

Nope, that’s against my human rights and that won’t stick love. Hate to break it to you. You sure as hell won’t stop me from doing anything I may need to, nor will you stop me going abroad.

      • Anonymous says:

Oh really? Specifically which of your Human Rights is it against and, if there is a specific right that it infringes upon, can you confirm how it is not justified? thanks.

Can we let people make health decisions comfortably in peace, instead of doling out ignorant scolding?

These ulterior motivated deviants love to use social pressures and fear monger bullying through “articles” and “facts” from bought out yellow journalism media houses to force people into things without giving due process to let individuals come to decisions on their own when THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE to do so.

Being a pleasant person, becoming more active in the community, doing charitable work…Fine, those are great things to encourage people to become and incorporate into their lives, sometimes through strong nudging.

However, this is a medical decision, not the social media trend it has been made out to be. People need to properly contemplate their own personal health risks before jumping on the bandwagon of a vaccine which the long-term effects simply rest on hopes and prayers. 95% efficacy is great, but many vulnerable individuals cannot help but think, “What will happen if I am in the 5% group?”

Horror house scaring people and sufficiently educating people about risks and benefits are two different things. However, these “information warriors” will have you believe that they are the same. Conflation with sensation will always lead to hesitation.

To clear up any confusion, yes, I am fully vaccinated.

      I ain’t eating frogs thanks.

For the vaccine-hesitant people in Cayman: From the Compass story just released today about the current rise in cases in BVI (which has only a bit more than30% vaccinated)

“Of the 18 hospitalisations for COVID since 4 July, 17 of those patients were unvaccinated.”

Alright lads and lasses, here’s what we need to do.

    Overwhelm Travel Time.

all of that would like to travel in August or Sept but haven’t yet gone to the effort need to apply to Travel Time and let them know when you are planning to travel.

We overwhelm them with our emergencies and we’ll force change.

    • Anonymous says:

Now you’re just going to make life worse for people dealing with real emergencies because you miss Dolphin Mall.

    • Anonymous says:

No. You will get a simple cut and paste reply saying that’s unfortunate but there are no flights left so no need to consider your request further. Been sold out for ages.

  4. Anonymous says:

What percentage of public school staff have been verifiably vaccinated?

  5. Anonymous says:

It all boils down to the fact that CIG has no confidence in HSA. Ridiculous staff isolations for ridiculous reasons, ridiculous quarantines of vaccinated and tested negative people is a clear indication how far behind Cayman health system is in treating and preventing COVID.

  6. Anonymous says:

You are absolutely right 7:39. The ignorant bullying must stop! Those who took the vaccine need to educate themselves. Pfizer, the maker of the vaccine used locally, have publicly said that it’s efficacy is now in question and a booster is needed. Despite the CDC’s and FDA’s reaction I think that Pfizer is correct. So you all can go along your merry way thinking that the vaccines are keeping you “safe” or providing immunity. That is your choice but the rest of us have the right to also to choose what we feel is right for us. It is called democracy.

    • Anonymous says:

That is not what Pfizer said. They said their vaccine remains highly effective against the Delta variant.

They said boosters may be required for those vaccinated in December of last year who are over 70 or immune compromised.

    • Anonymous says:

Another anti-vaxxer grasping at straws. You are just embarrassing yourself now.

      • 🥸 says:

people like you amaze me. you regurgiatate the spiel from the telly box and media as though it’s knowledge and considered thought, but it isn’t, it’s just repeating the propaganda. They have been wrong at every turn, and you still swallow everything they say. The conspiracy factists have been right at every turn, and still you ignore them. No doubt when numbers keep going up you won’t be capable of thinking and seeing it’s all lies, and you’ll instead blame the “dirty unvaxed” even though that makes no sense whatsoever. Try reading, learning and thinking via some alternative opinions from real scientists.

        • Anonymous says:

Exactly what have the conspiracy fascists been right about? Opinions from real scientists? Sure.

There is no possibility of changing these people’s minds. Just open up already.

    • anonymous says:

Tnose who do not take a readily available vaccine are at the moment infringing on my rights as a Caymanian to travel into my country without restriction. This is of course whether science is beleived and that those vaccinated have a less liley chance to spread the virus and are less likely to die or be debilitated because of it. Those who chose not to vaccinate are fast becoming part of the problem regarding reopening with all its freedoms re-established. Those who do not get vaccinated have that choice but so do companies who prefer not to employ those who have become part of a worldwide problem. No different than smoking restrictions actually. There could be designated areas for those who are ot vaccinated and are required to where a mask at all times and to social distance.

      • Kurt Ma says:

Misplaced anger. It is the government preventing you from travelling, not the people who choose not to be vaccinated.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes but the government is concerned about covid spreading rapidly amongst the unvaccinated. It could potentially make it difficult for people with other medical needs to get care because resources are being directed towards unvaccinated covid patients.

I personally still believe we should open up because we can’t stay closed forever and I don’t see a lot of these people being convinced to get vaccinated. But the unvaccinated are still the problem.

You speak B…S…, that was NOT said at all and was almost the complete opposite.

  7. Anonymous says:

The opening plan is meaningless without an achievable target for vaccinations and a way to get there.

    • Anonymous says:

Give everyone KYC300.00 for getting their shot – this is by far cheaper than the stipend payments (collectively) and the full economic loss due to no tourism / boarders closed.

      • Anonymous says:

A carrot AND a stick! Give the Caymanian’s 300 bucks, make it a grand, and the WP holders need to have to stay.

That should get the job done.

  8. Anonymous says:

Current strategy is not working. Can the govt/HSA please try something new? Mobile clinics please.

    • Anonymous says:

How about the radical idea of setting a firm date for opening so people have an incentive? Honestly- do you think that with the months this has been going on there are over 8000 people who are currently willing to get vaccinated but have been unable to get to any of the sessions so far, including the weekends and regional clinics?

      • Anonymous says:

It did not help that the Government indiscriminately increased the estimated population by 6000 people. Really dumb

        • Anonymous says:

          Deliberate fabrication

        • Anonymous says:

It didn’t help, but even if we still assumed 65000 as the total population we are still nowhere near 80%. The bigger problems are a) the percentage of unvaccinatable people- just the under 12 s alone are estimated to be 12-15% of the population and b) we have clearly run out of volunteers well short of the target.

    • Anonymous says:

Please come to the US. We are open. Come visit our restaurants, our malls, our beaches, clubs, museums , hospitals. Our numbers dropped significantly with the vaccination. It is not all gloom and doom. We are living just like you…free. Hugging our children, big gatherings. Open these borders so we can travel back and forth and visit one another.

  9. Anonymous says:

I don’t blame people for not getting vaccinated. I got done on the first day I was eligible but I’ll need a booster by the time there are actually any available flights. It makes no sense to get jabbed before you need to. This reopening “plan” has not been well thought through.

    • Anonymous says:

Boosters in the US and UK will likely only be given to the most vulnerable. Pfizer has indicated that any EUA it requests from the FDA would only be boosters for those over 65 or 70 or who are immunocompromised.

So dont let the concept of boosters hold you up as this isnt relevant for most of the public this winter.

      • Anonymous says:

Big Pharma really have made customers for life out of the vaccinated haven’t they. Mind blowing, and still you keep pushing it. It’s embarrassing now. Talk of a Booster this soon doesn’t even make you question things. Just keep nodding along and lining up.

  10. Anonymous says:

While we tell the country who invented the vaccine that their verification process doesn’t meet our standards, they are telling the world our tax system doesn’t meet their standards. Wake up Cayman!

  11. Anonymous says:

Remember when prisoners were going to catch covid, so several non-violent ones were released? We’re still operating with the same level of fear, despite facts to the contrary. I’m really started to get worried for my Cayman. Mixed in with fear, there is ignorance and arrogance. Many sit on this rock and judge other nations. Wait till all the persons who have travelled this summer return home and enlighten you to the realities of life instead of what you learn from the sensationalist media. Time would be better spent following the travels of Ms. Yellen.

  12. Anonymous says:

If the government simply grew a pair and said the opening plan is in place with or without 80% we would see more get the shot.

Just wait till we get our first case in the community, they will be running in the door for the shot.

    • Anonymous says:

Exactly!! Set a date and stick with it now. People have had PLENTY of time to get vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

I wouldn’t. I would just stay home and if I had to go out; follow protocols. Simple. I’m not afraid of a virus with a 99.97% survival rate, unlike you sheep.

      • Anonymous says:

Then you are fine with the govt setting an opening date then too. You say you will follow protocols so that proves exactly that the Govt just needs to set a date! Come on Govt….read 9:55 post. Open the borders! People have no plans to get the vaccines if they haven’t yet.

      • Anonymous says:

I am with you. I have written here many times about CV and ivermectin. I have not or has my family been vaccinated. However, my son and his GF caught the delta variant and they have recovered after 10 days. But it is day 15 now and they still can’t smell but it is slowly returning. And to my wonderful surprise, yesterday my wife fell ill with the CV as well. So, now I am taking care of her and it will probably be another 10 days of aches, pains, low fever, and coughs. While I am still on the fence about getting the jab- I am beginning to believe that a shot would be worth the trade of 10 days of illness. Plus – no one wants to be around you and that makes things all the more miserable. I am not anti-vax as I have been vaccinated for everything but CV. I just don’t trust it yet. And like you say 99.97% isn’t very scary but the lost time is a real inconvenience. Wish the vaccine was fully approved then I would grab it – until then I am cooking chicken soup.

        • Anonymous says:

You don’t trust the vaccine but you’re ok with getting a virus where you might lose your sense of smell, and it’s still gone and is slowly coming back even though you’ve “recovered” – that doesn’t scare you but a provisional approval vs. a “full” approval would reassure you?

          • Anonymous says:

Long term effects of illnesses are nothing new. The sense of smell returns after a few weeks. Several others I know experienced the same thing. However, no one can tell me what the long term effects are for this new mRNA vaccine (emergency use only). I will wait.

  13. Anonymous says:

What about census takers? ESO can you confirm they will all be vaccinated

  14. Anonymous says:

Give us a real plan!!!! The chart PACT put out was actually pretty decent EXCEPT for the unattainable 80% restriction. Remove that and make the dates of each phase a set date. People will either get vaccinated or not but the rest of us can start living again.

  15. Anonymous says:

I think those who are steadfast in not getting vaccinated will not change for any reason. We will be at a standstill for sure. Other reopening plans must be put in place because we will not see the 80%.

  16. Anonymous says:

Since we are requiring work permit holders and visitors to be vaccinated what about the civil service? Visitors will first come into direct contact with airport, customs and immigration workers. Shouldn’t they too be vaccinated? What say you Mr Premier.

  17. Anonymous says:

When is the official opening date?

  18. Anonymous says:

Can’t vaccinate people who don’t exist.

  19. Anonymous says:

Those that don’t want the shot will never change their minds. Open the border faster. It’s going to be impossible to keep the virus out once the border is opened. Either you deal with it vaccinated or risk dealing in with it without the vaccine. The UK is seeing soaring case counts but this metric is outdated and they agree. Few are being hospitalized or dying from this virus anymore in countries with a high population of vaccinated. Personal responsibility, remember those days??

  20. Anonymous says:

This is hilarious…at this rate, it will be years before we open.

  21. Door to door says:

We have to go door to door and find the person’s not vaccinated and gently persuade them to take it for their own benefit

    • Anonymous says:

Is “gentle persuasion” the name of the baseball bat that you will be trying to coax them with!? Not as effective as free burgers but probably more satisfying. Joking of course… cough

    • Anonymous says:

We can get them to join a worker’s union at the same time!

  22. Anonymous says:

well done to all those who have gotten vaccinated.
what is the response from pact to the current vaccination rate?….how/when will we reach 80%????
why are the selfish ignorant minority allowed to restrict the normal rights of the rest of us ????

    • Anonymous says:

What is the current percentage of Pact members who are vaccinated?

    • Anonymous says:

There’s more chance of getting shot in Cayman.

I’ll take my chances of a healthy lifestyle, experimental vaccine free

    • Anonymous says:

We are from from ignorant. Perhaps the reverse is true? We have done our homework and decided against being part of this experiment with unproven mRNA technology.
Please stop bullying and mind your own business.
I don’t remember bullying you into taking the vaxx?
You clearly had a choice, you exercised your free will and that is all there is to it.

      • Anonymous says:

from from? Lol. Kind of proves the point.

      • Anonymous says:

Why did you not get the AZ vaccine when it was made available then, if your objection was just to “unproven mRNA technology”?

      • Anonymous says:

What sources did you use to “do your homework”? FB and YouTube?

It is everyone’s business because CIG is too worried about covid spreading amongst the unvaccinated to open the border. And to be fair, if a lot of unvaccinated people end up in hospital it could strain resources making it difficult for others to get needed medical care. What a selfish decision you’ve made. But I’m sure that you are very proud of yourself for being such an independent thinker.
