Minister Bryan gets the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine

(CNS): Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan has said that he remains hopeful the Cayman Islands will still be able to reach a national vaccination rate of 80% of the population having both COVID-19 shots before 9 September, despite the very small increases over the last few weeks. The percentage of people who have now had both doses inched up to 66% on Monday, after 460 people completed the vaccine course over the weekend. But only 175 more people were vaccinated for the first time since Friday. With less than 50,000 people having received at least one shot, Cayman has less than eight weeks to get more than 10,000 people both doses.

But speaking in Finance Committee, Bryan said the government was going all out to persuade those who have not yet been vaccinated to get both shots as soon as possible and the target of 80% would remain, despite the challenge. Although, as Alden McLaughlin MP pointed out, the only country in the world that has achieved that kind of rate is Gibraltar, Bryan said he hoped that Cayman could be the second, as he urged the opposition to join forces in a concerted effort to get everyone vaccinated.

Meanwhile, three more travellers tested positive for the coronavirus this weekend, increasing the number of current active cases of the virus to five among people currently in isolation and quarantine, none of whom have symptoms of COVID-19.

We have all made our choices, the government should set a date for reopening instead of basing it on the percentage of vaccinated people. Who wants to be vaccinated, already did and those who choose not to, already did.
Let’s unite people as are a divided country and it’s not necessary.

  2. Anonymous says:

I am vaccinated, but do not believe that those who can’t or don’t want to take the vaccine should be ostracized. It’s their choice, and their risk to take. If you are vaccinated, you are 95% protected, so doesn’t really matter whether others are or not.

Government should set the opening date, regardless of percent vaccinated, and then let people make their own risk assessment on whether they want to be vaccinated or not. Then open the borders and let the cards fall where they may.

    • Anonymous says:

I agreed, set the date and let people live with the consequences of their choices. But until then let us live and get on with our lives.

    • Anonymous says:

If the border opening wasn’t bring pinned on those unvaccinated changing their mind, they wouldn’t be ostracized. I don’t personally care if a person is/isn’t vaccinated except when that affects me personally (i.e. the border re-opening).

Govt needs to man up and announce an opening date instead of putting the onus on unvaccinated people.

We have chosen, so until the border is open let’s live. The island is COVID free, except for those we imported in – let appreciate this and what we have here now.
We probably do not have to spend any money as we may have everything we already need.

Stop with the labeling and let’s us see each other as human beings regardless of race.

We have to deprogrammed our customs, cultures and believes to see and think differently to facilitate change which is inevitable.

Higher thinking teaches us how to think for ourselves and not just regurgitate what was taught, what was written, or what was it is being said.
Release the anger, release all the negative energy and let’s live, until the border re-opens.
Let us squash the negativity that is consuming us all to appreciate this place.

Based on postings we will not get 80percent vaccinated by 9th sep as we do not have those people in estimate r not here. My sugestion:
    1. Irrespective of vaccination percentage announce the 9th sept as opening date that allows planning by people agences airlines businesses hotels etc.
2.unvaccinated r not allowed to enter flights inbound or outbound.
3.t is unlikely people will bring false certificates.if at all may be 1 or 2.if we doubt theirs they will doubt ours.

    4.preboarding negative test as mandatory
5.virus may be present in one or two visitors r returning residents as is case now in quarantine
But as most r vaccinated sickness will be mild.we have to accept and ready for such incidents if we want to travel and road to recovery
    6. Do not allow unvaccinated in public closed spaces. This is to protect them from getting virus and sick as vaccinated may be carriers
    7. No entry to bars or restaurents or travel of unvaccinated may be incentive to get vaccinated
8.all continue to wear masks and maintain physical distance until Dec 2021and monitor.if any problems review.
    9. During census time a separate sheet with verifiable vaccination data of all residents which will give correct vaccination status
    10. Vaccination team visits the unvaccinated motivates and offers vaccination to the willing no force.

Hopefully we can ejoy 2022 without problem👍👍👍😑

I see from the vaccination clinic schedule that Kenny’s big plan to get everyone vaccinated is to close all vaccination facilities on Mondays. Do they expect us to believe that they want 80% to get vaccinated?

  7. Anonymous says:

People need a reason to get vaccinated that has immediacy rather than surviving Covid if we ever open up.

Apart from the no work permit renewal or new permit without proof of vaccination (which I am beginning to doubt government will ever actually do), here are some suggestions.

Can’t go to a bar without proof of vaccination. That one will definitely motivate some of the hesitant.

Can’t go to a restaurant without proof of vaccination. Probably some will be motivated by that one.

Can’t get on a plane without proof of vaccination – well maybe that one is not so immediate as there are no flights available.

Anybody else got suggestions for how we motivate people?

    • Anonymous says:

Oh gee golly maybe when the vaccine becomes approved by the FDA i’ll be “motivated” but until then, the pro vax zealots need to give it a rest already. You all are worst than the plague.

Somebody on this thread suggested that Covid deaths in the UK were only about 20 per day despite the rapidly rising infection rate. The actual total today was 96, still lower than a few months ago but up from an average of less than 10 per day less than a month ago. Given that death rates lag infection rates and that the dropping of public health measures was only yesterday my guess is that this number will rise considerable by the end of August.

If we have a Minister Of Health, perhaps they could explain why these vaccines are not yet available at private health clinics. Or even the damn pharmacies?

They have zero interest in opening the border.

  10. Anonymous says:

If the PACT government actually wants us to be safe as possible when we re-open they should introduce a domestic vaccine passport for access to places where the virus is more likely to be spread. To get that system right they should start it now so that there are no issues when they let the virus into our community.

Here is a suggestion for a new vaccination campaign slogan – No Shirt, No Shoes, No Proof of Vaccination – No Service (in bars, restaurants, movies, public transport, airports, etc.)

Money rule this world. No money to bars, restaurants, movies, public transport, airports, etc. then.

      • Anonymous says:

The evidence from France and other places that have seen the wisdom in this approach is that business dipped for a day or two for bars etc, during which time there was a massive uptake of the vaccines, after which it went back to normal. Here restaurant and bar owners ought to love the idea as it will mean that shutdown after the virus is let in will be far less likely.

        • Island Dreams says:

back to normal??? lol just be quiet, you have no idea what’s going on in your own space much less one- thousands of miles away.

    • anonymous says:

Absolutely agree. there is no reason why this approach cannot be used similiar to France has done. It is exactly like rules such as no shirt, no shoes etc. If a person beleives they have a right not oget vaccinated then they simply can stay home rather than visiting or frequenting those places where large groups of people gather

  12. anon says:

If the Pact Govt wants to be taken seriously it has to drop this 80% charade and tell us exactly what will happen when the inevitable occurs and we never reach 80%. If they keep us shut down, I foresee another election as the only way forward.

    • Anonymous says:

Boy, you sound like Roy and Alden..can’t wait to find an excuse to bring the government down..NO MORE PPM!!!

  13. Anonymous says:

I wonder why government can’t figure out that people who are too lazy or indifferent to get vaccinated will only get vaccinated if they can only do the things that they like to do if they ARE vaccinated? It is basic common sense.

  14. Sheriff says:

We are at an impasse, I believe it is extremely unlikely the government or anyone else will convince the unvaccinated to get vaccinated. It doesn’t matter if I agree with their reasons for not getting vaccinated, they have made up their minds. Those of us that made the choice to be vaccinated are held hostage by those who do not wish to be vaccinated and until PACT admits they have set an unattainable goal and makes an alternate plan to reopen the border we will remain in the same situation.

Reaching 80% by September 9 is a pipe-dream, even reaching 80% by October seems impossible. I would feel better if PACT would be “transparent” and tell us IF they have a plan to address the possibility of not reaching 80% or if their plan is truly about keeping tourism at bay and keeping us from traveling off-island until 2022. Making it difficult to leave by allowing only a couple of flights per week on CaymanAirways and the price of airfare being ridiculously high for a short flight to Miami is a sure-fire way to force us to stay put and spend money locally.

    • Anonymous says:

They are definitely limiting flights to keep people spending money here this summer. They know the break is the time that most people want and are able to travel. Perhaps announcing a September opening date was meant to encourage people to wait to book flights or at least temper people’s anger over not being able to book. Obviously it was not a true plan because it’s never going to happen.

Disappointing that PACT completely lacks honest transparency. What a joke.

      • Anonymous says:

Aha…But we are onto this. Expect a crippling of local business until such time as the Government amends its policies . It may take a while before the light bulb shines on them.

Ease up on the non-vaccinated. From the way everyone is going on about it you would think the vaccinated would prefer the non-vaccinated dead. So, it may just be a win win for the vaccinated. Open up the country, charge admission at the hospitals and give the vaccinated “I told you so cards” and the vaccinated can sashay across the various hospital floors handing the cards out to everyone with CV. Maybe for extra money the HSA will let you pinch the oxygen tubes for some added entertainment. /sarc off/

Govt better come up with a backup plan or we’re locked down forever. Never hitting 80%. With a made-up population number and an ever changing % goal, that pretty little colour chart they put out falls apart in the early phases.

Good question – we should have a lottery – which will happen first – 80% vaccinated or illegal signs removed or the promised Code of Conduct appearing or social equity being achieved. To be honest I am not sure if any of those things will happen in the next 4 years.

Sadly each of the ‘very small numbers’ are individuals suffering and dying because they could not be bothered to get vaccinated. Hopefully we don’t see that here when the government lets the virus in.

        • Anonymous says:

3:38 p.m. “… could not be bothered to get vaccinated …”. ??? Really?! Did you, in the midst of your selfish bullying, consider that there are those who cannot take the shot due to health reasons?!!! I guess that to you their lives do not matter.
You, and all others shouting for this government to just reopen our borders, despite the rising rate of infection and “breakthrough” cases of those already vaccinated, need to step back and understand that being vaccinated is no guarantee that you will not still get the virus, become very sick from it or die. Scientists and doctors advise that the chances of that happening are very low, however, they do not say taking the shot causes immunity, The effectiveness of and reactions to the vaccine vary from person to person. Just remember that.

There is an old saying that; “your freedom to swing your fist ends where my nose begins”, meaning freedom of choice ends where other people are put at risk.

At present there is insufficient ostracism of people who create a risk to the community by refusing to get vaccinated without any medical contra-indication.

It used to be socially OK for people to get blind drunk and then drive a car. That is no longer acceptable.

It used to be OK to blow second hand smoke into other people’s faces in restaurants and bars. That is also no longer acceptable.

As a society we have made it socially unacceptable and legally forbidden for people to drive drunk and smoke in enclosed public spaces. It is time to take action regarding the risks posed by the voluntarily unvaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

      • Anonymous says:

News flash – the US Constitution does not apply in Cayman

Besides – the point is that it is perfectly reasonable to say that community risk should be limited by limiting access to those most likely to spread a serious communicable disease like Covid.

        • Anonymous says:

“…most likely to spread a serious communicable disease like Covid.”???

this is an assumption. You want to segregate Cayman society based on pure assumption that unvaccinated people are spreading serious communicable disease?
I suggest you start with people spreading STDs.

          • Anonymous says:

Covid is a very dangerous communicable disease and I think the point is that when the government lets the virus in, the virus will spread rapidly using the unvaccinated as its primary breeding ground. At that point, restricting contacts for those most likely to spread the disease will be better than a general shutdown of the country.

How a healthy, TESTED NEGATIVE, unvaccinated person can make others sick?

What about a person who is exempted for health reasons? Segregate?

CNS: A healthy vaccinated person can spread the virus. This is not news, having been a known fact for a year and a half. It can take several days before a new infection shows up on a Covid test, so someone who has been tested can still spread. The people who cannot take the vaccine for health reasons are precisely why the rest of us and society at large should take such measures.

      • Anonymous says:

Thank you CNS – what you eloquently stated is actually also stated within the ECHR.

The state has the right to limit the application of Art. 8 when it is reasonable and proportionate to do so in order to protect the health and safety of others. It is on that basis that the UK and so many EU states are limiting personal freedoms through the use of Covid passports and other mechanisms in order to combat Covid.

Perhaps the failure to include that aspect of Art 8 was merely a unintended omission by the person you responded to.

Actually – the main incentive for hesitant and anti-social people in France to get vaccinated is the new rule that says that unvaccinated people cannot go to bars, restaurants or other enclosed public places and that they cannot use public transport including long distance public transport. That is the rule that we should adopt as well.

Your point illustrates CIGS true plans on reopening, and that is to delay it till nov-dec 2021 at the earliest. They shoot off their mouths telling everyone to get vaccinated as that is the only path to reopening, but they have really not displayed any significant effort to accomplish this goal. How difficult is it to open east end, bodden town, and north side clinics to have functional vaccine access. How difficult is it to have a mobile trailer at fosters, hurleys, thompsons? The fact CIG has not put any effort to accomplish the level of vaccination they have set, shows they do not want to reopen. The question, is what is the honest reason for this position. Limited medical resources is a legitimate reason, but thus has really not been cited routinely, by CIG.
Unfortunately this leads to questioning more nefarious motives. Once the dust settles from covid in the next year, evaluation of the economic players will likely shed light on this question.

    Common sense finally from Fox?

Fox News host Sean Hannity had a message for viewers of his primetime show last night: “Please take Covid seriously.” The influential host, a close ally of Donald Trump, also said: “I believe in science, I believe in the science of vaccination.”

Nearly 609,000 people have died in the coronavirus pandemic in the US but vaccination rates have slowed amid resistance among conservative sections of the population, stoked by rightwing politicians and media.

As the infectious Delta variant causes cases to rise, federal officials have said more than 99% of deaths are among unvaccinated people. At the White House on Friday, Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said: “This is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

the pandemic of the unvaccinated now?
99% of the cases are from the unvaccinated? Um, thats not gonna be accurate. We already know of 5 Democrats on a plane 60 that tested positive- all were vaccinated. Israel is reporting 60% plus in their hospitals are vaccinated. They all had Pfizer. I gotta hand it to Pfizer- they sure spent their money wisely on lobbyists…

CNS: The vaccine slows down the spread of covid but no one has said it stops it. However, if you are infected and are fully vaccinated, your chances of getting very sick with long-term consequences or dying are very very low. The 99% figure (90+% usually) is hospitalizations of unvaccinated v vaccinated, not cases.

Your observations about Israel are out of context. Read the Times of Israel – Just one serious COVID patient in Israel is both vaccinated and under 60
“The Delta variant is believed to be more successful in bypassing the COVID vaccines than previous strains of the virus. [Israel’s] Health Ministry figures released in early July indicated that the Pfizer COVID vaccine is only 64% effective in preventing infection, but it remains 93% effective at preventing hospitalization and serious symptoms.”

Actually CNS, we were led to believe and many, many are still led to understand that a vaccine program will stop it, end it, everything would be fine. The vast majority do not have the time, inclination nor edukashun to understand much or any of it.

That’s one of the issues with this entire scenario we’re living thru since early 2020 – whether it’s misinformation, lack of information, lack of understanding, deliberate misleading on all or any side, etc.

We were terrified by the zombies of Wuhan and led to believe that we had no choice to avoid global catastrophe than to hide indoors. We’ve been sheltering healthy people whilst letting the obese order fast food and alcohol home.

Despite constant efforts to contradict, it is now clear there are known therapuetics and cures (Ivermectin – Niacin especially) and these alone suffice to negate any Emergency Authorized vaccine rush to push.

The problem with the vaccines is obvious – they do not cure it, they do not stop it spreading, they do not stop you getting it. These are 3 things that most of us naturally assume would NOT be the case. Yes, it seems they are reducing hospitalizations and deaths and that’s obviously a great thing.

The problem is of course – can we be sure they are infact causing that? Or is it not the case that all those who died early on were ‘dry tinder’ from lean years of flu, combined with majorly poor care decisions in old age homes and hospitals (Ny, italy especially)? Has the virus run out of the easy pickings to kill? We don’t know yet.

We will not know for certain for at least a year as we go thru full winter seasons and establish a reset to compare 21/22 to 18/19 and see.

In the meantime, i’d suggest we remain closed down until summer 2022 and see how this all plays out as the returning residents from trips abroad currently bring back some infections (which they MUST if the Delta variant voracity and infectiousness holds to be true which it certainly looks as though it is)…so let’s see how we hold up in the community here for 6 months or so.

There is evidence Ivermectin can be effective as a prophylaxis. As far as treating those already affected by the virus, that evidence has been elusive. Even as a prophylaxis, the vaccine is far safer than taking 0.3mg/kg of Ivermectin monthly. May hold water in poorer countries with no access to the vaccine but not needed here.

Cure is a very strong word in medical science. This is a novel virus and a “cure” is going to take many years to develop or may never be developed. You are wrong in the other 2 of your 3 statements saying the vaccine is not effective. It does prevent spreading the virus and it does offer very good protection against contracting Covid-19 from the virus.

That would be an extremely poor assumption to make. The less deaths and hospitalizations are among unvaccinated. There is now overwhelming evidence showing unvaccinated are the ones getting sick and/or dying.

If anything, we should be opening sooner rather than later. The virus will be impossible to keep out of Cayman forever. The virus will not be going away anytime soon. The reality is, eventually all of us will catch this virus in the next few years. Do you want to catch it with an effective and safe vaccine or do you feel like rolling the dice with your life? The virus may not kill you but it may cause you permanent damage you will have to live with for the rest of your life…

The French government just practically mandated the Vax for the entire country to go to stores, restaurants, movies, even hospitals (negative tests will be allowed but I read they will end that). Does this make sense to you? For a virus that the vast majority has almost 100 % survival rate. For a Vax that’s unapproved, with no long term data, risk of severe short term side effects, unknown long term side effects, and still causes transmission and is proven its losing efficiency rapidly against Delta. Countries are plunging this into the arms of children, fully aware that kids are ending up in the ICU with myocarditis and at least one has died. Kids who barely show symptoms from covid. They are injecting people who already have covid. If people opened their eyes, researched, read the international news, their stomach would churn. Something is seriously wrong.

CNS: why do we allow disinformation like this to be posted and read? The text of this post should be removed with a message that “this content has been removed as it contains harmful disinformation about vaccines”

CNS: Because the vaccine hesitant live amongst us. How are you going to persuade them if you don’t engage? It’s also important for government to see what they are up against. If they don’t have someone reading these comments and looking at Facebook, they should. I do a fair amount of fact checking but we have many informed readers who are very good at fact checking and push-back. Maybe you could become one of them.

Agree with CNS. Shutting down free speech by censoring content is not the solution. Rather counter the argument with facts and logic.

“Vaccine Hesitancy” is too soft of a word for these people spreading false information about the pandemic and vaccines. I like the term “Covidiots” personally.

‘Something is seriously wrong.’ So true – regarding the falsehoods and nonsense in your post.

It makes perfect sense. Unvaccinated people are more likely to catch and spread covid. Rather than restricting the entire population by requiring lockdowns (or closed borders) to control covid, the restrictions are put on the unvaccinated. It makes it easier for vaccinated people and the economy to return to normal. It’s too bad that PACT doesn’t have the courage to do something similar.

No virus in history has mutated and become more lethal. A virus can mutate and become more transmissible which is a GOOD thing because it means we are that much closer to herd immunity.

Mutations are deleterious, that’s correct…and now we see the rest of the population contract it for the first time, or perhaps second time, deaths will be lower, hospitalisations will be up as it’s more infectious, but due to reduced vectors it won’t last as long. In some ways it’s all counterintuitive to the layman tough.

*CNS: You’re parroting social media BS and pretending that you have more medical knowledge than you actually possess. USA Today – Fact check: Yes, viruses can mutate to become more deadly
“The statement that ‘in the history of virology, there has never, ever, been a viral mutation that resulted in a virus that was more lethal’ appears to be quite untrue,” Timothy Sheahan, virologist and assistant professor for the Gillings School of Global Public Health of the University of North Carolina, told USA TODAY.

Sheahan pointed to several examples such as the Ebola virus, which was discovered in 2016 to have undergone a mutation that not only made it more transmissible but likely more infective. This variant eventually died when the epidemic ended in 2016. The West Nile virus was found in 1999 to have mutated into a highly virulent strain, killing crows on multiple continents.

80 percent is a good target for vaccination of eligible persons. As noted in one of CNS publications, we need 56880 of 71000 to be vaccinated to get 80 percent. It means –we have about 12000 under 16 yrs so 56880 of 59000 i.e 97 percent of eligible. now adding 12yrs and above possibly 56880 of 63000 i.e 90 percent. not practical targets as about 2000 75yrs and abobe, some may not like as home bound and some children may not wish as new development.
2020 statistics Dep estimate was 65000 population appears realistic as annual pop growth was between 2-3 and some times negative for the past 15 yrs as in the estimates document.
It appears we have covered most of the eligible above 16 with first dose and automatically they will get second when due.
To get real coverage need some sample surveys in some offices and some clusters of households.
also another way is for example some volunteers will go to a district, comb house by house as if cordoned by police, identify eligibles, vaccinated and unvaccinated and vaccination team follows offering to the willing.
will have facts and reward. Coverage by estimation is not appropriate for small nations.

Existing childhood vaccinations have been through long trials and have proven track records over years and years. They also are produced differently. And yes, I do remember a recent outbreak of chicken pox amongst those vaccinated, on island.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes, chicken pox but that was not mentioned in the post – it was polio and smallpox. But ok. At this rate, I have no sympathy for anyone who gets sick and is not vaccinated. I research, I listen to the doctors and nurses at the hospitals who treat Covid patients and I don’t want to get that sick when there is a shot that will save your life nor would I want to transmit it to anyone else.

      Our community. Our choice.

      We drive on the left
We send our children to school
We do not take other people’s things

We do a great many things because the community needs us to in order to function.

You can drive on the right, not send your kids to school, and steal, but it won’t work out that well longer term, for you or for others.

You are correct in theory. Unfortunately, government is pandering to the minority so right now, our community has very little say. The continuation of government handouts is to keep those who would go hungry to remain passive. The argument should be, if it’s your body, your choice, and you don’t wish to take the vaccine, then live with the decision. Open up Cayman!

I think it would be more hateful to say that he is uninspiring and doesn’t appear to be very competent at much of anything. That is an opinion that you don’t have to agree with.

I could also state that he has been convicted for trafficking in cocaine, based on his own plea of guilty. That is a fact that is in evidence.

I could also state that the Minister of Tourism is restricted from travelling to certain other countries as he has a drug conviction on his record. That makes him basically unqualified for this particular ministry

It would be hateful for me to say that my interpretation of the press coverage of Mr. Bryan’s conviction for cocaine trafficking is that he was just a low level street punk and not particularly good at it as he got caught by an undercover officer. Apparently Mr. Bryan didn’t have the ability to rise up the ranks of his drug distribution pyramid to become anyone of importance. That would be hateful.

I could also state that Mr. Bryan was found guilty of assaulting a police officer in 2016. That is a fact.

It would be hateful for me to say that for some reason the Magistrate in the case decided not to record a conviction expressly because of Kenny’s political aspirations. If she had recorded a conviction it may have spared us all from having Mr. Bryan in a ministerial position that he is ill-suited for or sitting in Parliament at all.

The above hateful comment is base on my personal assessment of the man.

My opinion is further strengthened by Mr. Bryan’s previous assertion on a certain radio show after being found guilty that he would not be giving information or helping the police ever again. Hopefully he has changed his tune over the last 5 years but sadly if Kenny is one of the “best” we have as a leader in the Cayman Islands then maybe we don’t have much of a future at all.

Now that would be a hateful comment, unfortunately I don’t think any of these comments are “unnecessary”. People should be aware of just how checkered and concerning Mr. Bryan’s and many other politicians’ backgrounds really are.

Sounds like he’s just telling the truth – and many of us are wondering why a person like that is our Minister of Tourism.

          • WTF says:

The fun bit is these skeletons aren’t actually in a closet. This is all public record.

It would be factually correct if the media took to describing Kenny as “Minister of Tourism and convicted drug dealer, Kenneth Bryan”.

Also please remember this wasn’t ganja that Kenny was dealing. He is an admitted user and dealer of Cocaine…

If you ever actually listen to Kenny speak you realize he isn’t smart enough to be delusional.

A lot of word salad comes out of his month but many words he uses don’t mean what he thinks they mean.

The frightening part is he is regarded as being one of the bright lights of this gov’t.

Wayne probably gets up every morning and wonders if being Premier was worth it. Very little change that PAC will be a successful gov’t and I doubt they hold their coalition together until the next election.
