Cayman gets over 9,600 more vaccines

| 16/07/2021 | 274 Comments

(CNS): The Cayman Islands received another 9,653 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from the UK on Wednesday’s British Airways flight, officials have confirmed to CNS, which means that the country now has enough doses to reach the 80% national target. The problem now is getting them into arms. Once again, the ‘needle’ on the vaccination rate has stalled and just 60 more people got their first dose over the last day. With no change in the national rate, 69% of the estimated 71,100 people have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 46,360 people, or 65%, have completed the two-dose course.

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported that there were two positive cases of COVID-19 in travellers among the 468 tests carried out over the last day. There are now three active but asymptomatic cases of the virus among those in quarantine and isolation.

Wow, just released (Monday news release), 175 first doses over the last three days.

7,564 more first doses to go to hit 80% by Sept 9th. And with 7 weeks left, those first doses must be given in the next 4 weeks so that second doses are administered by Sept 9th.

(Going to still wait a few more weeks, Mr. Panton, to address what is plan B when the arbitrary 80% of a mythical population is not met? You reasserted in the parliament last week that nothing moves forward without 80%….so…..)

A federal judge has ruled Indiana University can require its students and employees to get vaccinated for Covid-19.

US district judge Damon Leichty in South Bend rejected a request from eight students aiming to block the requirement while they pursue a lawsuit claiming that the university’s policy violated their constitutional rights by forcing them to receive unwanted medical treatment, the Associated Press reports.

Hundreds of private and public colleges across the United States have introduced vaccine mandates.

Leichty said that the Constitution “permits Indiana University to pursue a reasonable and due process of vaccination in the legitimate interest of public health for its students, faculty and staff”.

Sad to say, CIG needs to start incentives. Lottery, gifts, alcohol, even direct cash. Need to get this done and soon. Now that there is a published plan, the price to pay for incentives is much less than price of staying closed and missing the plan.

    Pursuing an insane strategy.

In the beginning of the pandemic it was looking as though the mortality rate was two percent. It was rational to halt flights and take serious precautions while we got our arms around a strategy and learned what we are dealing with. Within months it became apparent that the IFR (infection mortality rate) was far less than 2% and in fact many magnitudes less and closer to .03%. We also had a history to guide us where vaccines are concerned. It normally takes years sometimes more than 5 years to produce a vaccine that has an efficacy of 65%. This is the point where leadership needed to make rational and holistic decision. Instead they chose draconian measures in the hope that miraculously a vaccine would be available. Remember it could have taken years and maybe never but we gambled on a vaccine. Well, a scientific miracle happened and we got a vaccine, but not an ordinary vaccine, a vaccine with a 95% efficacy rate. We also received enough vaccines for everyone who wants one. But that still wasn’t good enough. Now we are waiting for an 80% vaccination rate which by all reasonable estimation will be near impossible to achieve but that’s beside the point. Whether we get to 80% or not, the leadership in Cayman has failed miserably to demonstrate the courage necessary for their positions. We are operating now purely on conjecture, fear and hopium. That is no way to lead. We also aren’t being told what the plan is if we don’t reach 80%. It very sad to watch.

OMG, you’re an idiot. I can’t believe 50 people gave you thumbs up.

If the fatality rate was only 0.03% even if every American adult (200m) caught COVID, only 60,000 Americans would have died. In fact, not every American got COVID (estimates are around one third) and 600,000 died.

In addition, that death rate includes everyone over the age of 18. It’s not evenly distributed. The fatality rate doubles for every six years of age. If the average age of the adult population is 40, a 64 year old is 8 times more likely to die from covid than the average adult.

We are heading into the biggest wave of Covid infection that we have ever seen and, even though the vaccine will substantially reduce the number of deaths and hospitalisations, it’s still likely that we will see somewhere in the low tens of thousands of deaths even if we are cautious.

And that could move into the mid and high tens of thousands of deaths if we just went back to normal activity.

There’s a chance PACT are right to make it unlikely we’ll hit the 80% for now…at risk of upsetting people, there are some news items from across the globe that should pause is for concern:

UK restricting vaccines to over 15’s unless vulnerable

Israel is now restricting fully vaccinated access to their country, and the numbers of severe ill in their hospitals are mostly fully vax’d

UK hospitals have also started to acknowledge that patients severely ill are fully vax’d and outnumbering the non vax’d

USA reports are coming out showing increasing alarm at vax complications

Canada ordering 80 million booster shots thru 2024!

More reporting coming out regarding natural immunity outlasting vax immunity

PACT May just very well be correct to keep us slow and steady and monitor what happens when all the ‘essential travelers’ return….there’s every chance the variants will spread in the coming weeks as even 5 days quarantine is known not to definitively cease transmission, and the vaccines do t stop you getting it or transmitting it

Ensuring another 6mo this or so of pain just may be the right move despite it’s obvious negatives

Irrespective of who is heading the principles of preventing and managing this pandemic are the same based on best practices and advice from PAHO,WHO,CARPHA CDC and Public Health England. We have done well so far. But the rate calculation may be problematic. The estimated pop may not be exact. Also the denominator should be the eligible pop. If we r using total pop for rate calculation it will show less. Possibly most of the eligible adults might have got vaccinated. A small quick survey in offices and shops may reveal true nature.
To be perfect we may need door to door survey of who got vaccinated or not .

In May 2019 there was an article about deaths from car accidents in Cayman over the span of one year. 2,353 accidents. 8 deaths. Therefore, if one gets in a car accident, in Cayman, 0.34% chance of death. Now, we’ve had 622 Covid cases. 2 persons have died. Ignoring any underlying conditions, age, heart attacks, that is still a 0.48% chance of dying from Covid. Do you know what 0.34% (car deaths) of 622? 2 people! Some will be quick to say one is contagious and one is not. Well those 622 people caught it because it was contagious and only 2 died. Plus we have the vaccine now. CNS: You’re exhausting. The article I linked is three days old and your response is not a logical rebuttal; it’s just a random thing that you think supports the anti-vax position.

The tests you cite are the rapid lateral flow tests, which are basically for home use. They are not included in the official stats and certainly would not account for hospitalizations or deaths. The article you linked is about kids bunking off school in the UK. While I have no doubt that kids everywhere will watch the same TikTok video showing them how to do this, extrapolating that to “people across the globe are now faking positive COVID to get out of work” is called “making stuff up”.

      • C'Mon Now! says:

        Hi CNS,

Going forward cases are going to be less and less important for a vaccinated population. They will not be a precursor for hospitalizations and deaths among the vaccinated.

The virus will be endemic in most countries, likely including Cayman but a vaccination rates increase and treatments improve bad outcomes will be reduced.

Realistically most of us, even if vaccinated may get Covid in the course of our lifetimes. Perhaps several times. It will become more like the flu and or the common cold.

I expect the model Singapore is proposing will become more common as time goes on and vaxed rates improve.

Cayman has turned into North Korea of the Caribbean.
People have no idea that the world, the USA including, has moved on.

The problem in cayman, I believe, is not Covid19 or unvaccinated people, but the fear that local hospitals/doctors won’t be able to handle even a handful of cases that would require a hospitalization.

Based on what I have read so far (CNS and Compass), people who were admitted with Covid19, remained hospitalized for much longer than the median length of hospitalization in the US. Why? Lack of experience or being overcautious?

In the States, only about 25 to 33% of those who are hospitalized need intensive care. At this time, hospital care for coronavirus is focused on what’s called supportive care, or treatment to support the body’s vital organs. Ventilators are used as the last resort only.

So the questions people should be asking are not how many got the jabs, but what is the capacity of local hospitals, the availability of certified respiratory therapists (CRT) with covid treating experience. Believe or not, lives of people with severe covid would depend not on pulmonologist’ expertise, but on CRT’s experience.

HSA had enough time not only to recruit experienced CRTs, but to make sure they stay on top of the latest developments in treating covid, not just theoretically, but practically as well.

Panton’s policy if artificially tripling cayman airways flight costs and not letting BA out on flights for vaccinated residents to Europe, so that he can try and keep their money here, won’t work. I would estimate I would spend 5000 dollars each summer with a month away on vacation in the UK and Europe. I am determined to do no more staycations here and am only eating out in restaurants where I know the bar and waiting staff (usually expats who are Italian for example) and owners are vaccinated. Similarly I’m doing a kitchen and bathroom renovation this summer and have made it clear that no plumber, electrician, contractor, painter or anyone is allowed entry and to work on my house without showing me their HSA vaccination card. If the unvaccinated are determined to keep cayman locked forever and prevent us from traveling and having freedoms when we vaccinated folk have done our part for the economy and public health, I am determined to limit my hard earned dollars going to anyone unvaccinated in cayman as much as possible. Their is no point in a vaccination programme unless it brings rewards… as with other developed countries and the UK etc it must be made clear in the basis of fairness that people choosing not to be vaccinated will not be allowed to travel, when the airport opens and cannot enjoy the same freedoms here as those who are vaccinated, it is entirely logical and will no doubt be announced soon given the 80 per cent target seems unreachable currently.

The bigger question is what happens if COVID cases keep skyrocketing in Florida like they have the past week? Miami is our gateway, not London, and if things don’t get under control soon in Florida don’t know how we can open up here in September.

Over the past week, 45,603 new COVID cases were identified in Florida, an average of 6,515 new cases per day. That is far higher than the 23,562 new cases and 3,356 daily average from the previous week, which had already been Florida’s worst week since early May.

In the past month the stats in Florida, by county, show a direct relationship between the counties with low vaccination rates and high numbers of people getting COVID.

The exact same relationship applies in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas. No coincidence that those states have the highest rates of new COVID cases in America.

Hubert, I truly don’t think you have a reasonable understanding of what is happening in the world with covid.

The rise in cases in Florida is due to the number of unvaccinated people. The vaccinated are not suffering from this “wave” whatsoever. The vaccines work, but if the uneducated and ignorant are unwilling to get the vaccines, then they will just have to suffer the consequences and then we will reach herd immunity by way of those people finally becoming infected. So one way or another, nature is going to take it’s course. Please, before you start spewing things about the US, or Florida, read and understand.

You r correct sir. Covid is going to remain atleast endemic level. Vaccination doesnt protect from infection if exposed to an infected person but protect from severe illness and death. Secondly any vaccine will not provide antibodies in every one. Usually vary between 80 to 90 percent depending on vaccine and ability of body to prepare them based on age, medical conditions including cancer and drugs used. So although vaccinated we need to be prepared for worst when a serious case or death occurs

      • Anonymous says:

I think your concept of this is very much wrong. I don’t think anyone is asking expats to leave, they are asking them to do what is necessary to help the health and safety of their small island nation and that is by getting vaccinated.

Have you even thought what would happen to you if you developed covid on this island? When they open the borders covid will take root, no one is doubting that..Now as an expat myself, my biggest concern is more about how is the Cayman Islands going to handle the influx of covid cases? How many beds/ventilators trained staff do they have?

I love it here and want to stay. I know that I must do my part and not be selfish. I’m in my thirties and could easily take the line that I’m healthy and in shape so why bother taking the vaccine..that was my thought until 3 of my friends at home have died from covid. They were no different from me strong and healthy but even in my home country they weren’t able to be saved. Unfortunately, for them unlike me they were not even able to get the vaccine and died before they even got the chance to get it even if they wanted to. Why am I saying all of this? It is to say to all of my fellow expats particularly those who feel invincible, remember that the health care resources on this island are very limited and you cannot leave once you have covid and your families will not be able to come here to be with you particularly if they have chosen to be unvaccinated as well. I don’t want to catch covid and my chances of survival are better with the vaccine than without it. I don’t want to spend my last days in a Cayman hospital away from my family and friends and I want to have the best chances of survival. My biggest fear though is that the two hospitals that have ICU’s will be full and we end up with situations like in the USA where people are treated in the hallways.

I have not been able to attain this information but maybe CNS can enquire and let us know..How many ICU beds in the two hospitals are available to isolate covid patients? Is there a plan to convert a wing of the hospitals into an isolation unit for covid patients if the number of patients outnumber the ICU unit? Do the hospitals have enough staff to deal with covid patients if a large number of cases occur? I know when the first patient was diagnosed with covid here we lost an entire hospital to staff having to be isolated? What if that happens again?

We are getting close to re-opening. It scares me that everyone isn’t thinking about the consequences of that and are still focused on reasons they should not take the vaccine..It’s crazy. we have lived in this bubble for too long..Reality is on its way to Cayman and we better all get ready.

I think it is safe to say any former short term visitors that used to come here, that have no family or direct ties to the place will now not plan to return, given the difficulties and cost to travel to Cayman under the current or any future directives on the management of the COVID 19 crisis , by the CIG and it’s key players in the matter. Add the unknowns of if their vaccine credentials will be accepted ,having to quarantine and the resulting PCR tests , flights being guaranteed so one is not stuck in a hotel or condo at outrageous cost , in a snap lockdown with no ability to leave a foreign territory , a tiny island no less. Does any of this sound like something a sane person would subject themselves to? But to throw Cayman a bone here, it is not a unique problem just applicable to here. Anywhere you wanted to try and travel to, with the exception of the U.S. would currently impose a similar set of obstacles and hassles, of varying degrees ,merely to do a simple trip away . Most people will just say ‘ No thank you’ and plan to go elsewhere. That elsewhere isn’t even outside the U.S. or Canada . The two countries are so big , you could do a vacation choice somewhere different within their borders and avoid all the pitfalls of international travel. Cayman requires people to do international travel, that ability is now restricted , hamstrung , difficult to pull off. Just like the current re-opening plan that has been thrown at us.

That advice seems to morph in the minds onf many with auto immune problems or allergies – even completely irrelevant to the vaccine ingredients- as being advice that they shouldn’t get jabbed.

Hmm I have several autoimmune diseases and have been told by all my specialists to get jabbed and I have.

      • Anonymous says:

Also know some people who have medical conditions which mean they can’t take the vaccine. No one should be stigmatized because they can’t or don’t want to. Look into Ivermectin – may be an option for them.

      • Anonymous says:

Anyone who is immune compromised. When your doctor says don’t take the vaccine, I am guessing he knows better than the bad bullies

Everyone aware of the mass global protests happening against the vaccinations?

    • Anonymous says:

I know – I cannot believe the number of gullible idiots there are everywhere

    • Anonymous says:

This is a blatant false statement and fake news. Where is your evidence?

      • Anonymous says:

It’s all over the independent news. France right now is leading the way. UK had a huge demo couple of weeks ago.
If all you watch is CNN and BBC, you are getting the sanitized version.
The truth is that there are loads of protests going on right in Europe.
Just do a little research, all the evidence is there.

    • Anonymous says:

Really wondering why you think they are protesting vaccinations because I’m pretty sure the protests are them wanting vaccinations but they can’t get them. So aren’t we lucky to live somewhere that has an over supply. New study is again 99% of the deaths in hospital are from unvaccinated out of the US. But please continue to spew bullshit, we will be here every step of the way to bat it down.

As long as your choices don’t limit my rights and choices I’d agree…..but they are.

      • Anonymous says:

This is a pandemic and you are at higher risk if unvaccinated. The Government clearly goes not want to choose for us but will be forced to do exactly that.

In combination with the re-opening plan, Government should act to implement some sensible, clear policies with prior notice:
        – Non-essential travel to be entirely at the travellers’ expense, implementation already announced;
        – All arrivals not verifiably vaccinated must quarantine for 14 days;
        – Work permit holders must be verifiably vaccinated if they wish to remain here or new permit holders to arrive. Give those already here 3 months notice, unless they have a medical condition documented by Doctors from two different medical facilities that establish clear medical reasons not to take the vaccine they must get verifiably vaccinated or leave;
        – Students 12 years or older have to be verifiably vaccinated to attend in person classes at public schools and UCCI.
        Your choice.

  38. Anonymous says:

Hopefully we start giving it to tourist when they start visiting because the local population here doesn’t seem keen on a life-saving vaccine.

    • Anonymous says:

Life saving. COVID has a 0.004% death date

      • Anonymous says:

Complete and utter BS. Cite your source. John Hopkins – who I suspect knows a little more about medicine than you do – don’t agree, nor does any other reputable source,. Virtually every national government reporting on cases indicates fatality rates of over 1%, most over 2%. You cant add in people who haven’t yet caught the disease to make the stats look better. may as well say that fatalities from drunk driving are lower by counting all drivers instead of those driving drunk.

Give 31 doses and get another 9,653 doses. Sounds like a solid decision.

Between this and the unused prior shipment, how many jabs of COVID are on island now?

  41. Anonymous says:

Glad I’m getting a booster after having my second jab in February. I’d take two if possible. Time to give boosters and open up, lockdown the unvaccinated please. It’s only fair.

    • Anonymous says:

Lost trust in Dr Lee and government so no boosters. They can take boosters everyday before they go to “work”. Btw I took both my doses.

Let’s hope they have a long shelf life …… I have a feeling they won’t be getting used any time soon !

It is still 65% effective against infection from the Delta variant. But more importantly, it is still over 90% effective against hospitalization. Almost all the hospitalized in the US and UK are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

In addition, if infected, vaccinated individuals are less likely to infect others.

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

I don’t know what’s more worrying. You reading the Mail or believing what the Israeli govt says.

What are we going to do with all these soon to be unused doses, sell them or donate them?.

Open up Mr Panton. Around the world people are begging for vaccines. We have an excess.

Mr Panton, step up to the media and answer a ‘few questions’. I did vote for you, but you have been a sorry disappointment. You promised transparency, but all you do are scripted announcements every month or two, and refuse to take questions (I’m thinking Wendy has a practical question or two).

You should at least be in front of the media every week as a so called “leader”. Step up you coward.

    • Anonymous says:

First of all, it is Mr. Premier to you.

Second, learn to have respect for the decisions CIG makes. Like them or not, voted for them or not, these are the decisions being made in the benefit of the majority not the minority. When circumstances change for the better, the decisions made will reflect them.

Conceited Jr. 2021 should have ran in the election if they have so much to say and are willing to graduate from keyboard warrior summer camp.

      • Mr. Premier says:

I’d call him Mr. Cayman Airways cash cow. And I’d call you the same. We will address people as we see fit, thank you very much, nothing premier about the vaccine and lockdown policy here, does Mr. Joke work for you? Your comment is quite frankly disgraceful and insulting as evidenced by the red down marks. I suggest you grow up. Quickly. Thank you.

        Kim Jong-un….is that you typing?

      • Anonymous says:

That is ridiculous. Panton should be accountable to the people. Sure his government can come up with their own reopening plan but it’s a disgrace that he refuses to answer any questions on it. Even if people aren’t going to like the answers he gives, it’s cowardly not to even be willing to face them. Not exactly strong leadership qualities.

    Thank you UK.

For those paying attention, the percentage of our population that is vaccinated is in fact decreasing as large numbers of Brits and North Americans (who are vaccinated) have left on extended holidays.

    • Anonymous says:

By extended holiday you of course mean “essential travel”

    • Anonymous says:

If it takes30 minutes to get to work, as opposed to an hour, then the population must be under 49,141.

    • Sheriff says:

But they will return so they still count, right? Or maybe not, if not that would make it even more difficult to reach the impossible target. Hmmmm, maybe that is part of PACT’s no plan, plan.

    • Anonymous says:

Interesting point. The 71100 was based on net arrivals to a certain date. Are they changing the number to account for new arrivals and departures?

      • Anonymous says:

We still have lots of new arrivals and the population is continuing to grow. Hundreds of construction workers and accountants continue to move here. Some categories of new arrival are however unvaccinated. Everyone coming in should be offered a first dose on arrival.

    • Anonymous says:

My “extended holiday” starts next month. But its a working holiday. I run a global financial services team, but if I cant visit my team leaders and clients periodically we are going to go out of business. I am going to base myself somewhere I can travel from until they open he orders to non quarantine travel – otherwise my business wont survive.

Getting by on Zoom was ok for a while, but my firm cant run the business efficiently by that alone, nor can we compete with competitors who can travel. We are also struggling to recruit staff from overseas – they are initially attracted by the idea of a Covid free island, but when they realize they are stuck here once on island, not so much.

I know its almost sacrilege to suggest it, but from a clients perspective there is nothing magic about Cayman when compared to other offshore financial sectors. A lot of the consulting, accounting and law firms in the FS space can do the jobs equally well from almost anywhere as long as they have a small presence here – but there is a difference between having the bulk of you team in country, and just a notional representation. It was already a very expensive proposition basing people here – now that coupled with limitations on travel make it far harder to justify.

Mr Panton seems to think that the FS is immune to a closed border – he is wrong. Just wait and see how the law firms, who already have Cayman qualified staff onshore, start to ramp those numbers up and their presence here down. What was already a known problem is going to become a tsunami, and once they start staffing up accordingly very difficult to put that genie back in the bottle.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes and this combined with people trying to get rid of their holiday homes because it’s too difficult to get here is not going to be good for real estate.

Also people here questioning if they want to live somewhere where they are cut off from their families and unable to visit even if they can and are willing to quarantine.

      • Thanks says:

12:09 – Thank you for pointing this out. I find many people on-island truly believe the financial sector is invincible and will not succumb to the effects of the border closure. I fear our leaders are “all-in” on that belief. The inability to travel freely is an issue. Finding a way to open is paramount for all businesses just as finding a way to live with Covid is important. This virus is not going away anytime soon but it is clear vaccinated people are weathering Covid and all variants better than the unvaccinated. From today’s Wall Street Journal:

“AdventHealth, which manages 41 hospitals across seven Midwestern and Southern states, said about 97% of roughly 12,700 Covid-19 patients treated this year were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.”

“HCA Healthcare Inc., one of the nation’s largest hospital systems, said its data show fully vaccinated people account for less than 1% of its Covid-19 patients.”
