Cayman COVID transmission free for one year

| 09/07/2021 | 116 Comments

(CNS): On Sunday the Cayman Islands will mark one year without an single local transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the community. Since last July the only cases have been among travellers arriving with the virus and moving into quarantine, which has prevented any transmission, a situation that sets the country apart from almost every other in the world. There was just one new case in a traveller on Friday, according to the latest test results, which means that there are currently just two cases of COVID-19 among those in isolation, both of whom are asymptomatic.

The first case of COVID-19 was reported on 13 March last year in a visitor who was just one of two people who died from the virus here. The Cayman Islands has used strict border control, travel regulations, stringent technology-based quarantine measures and rigorous contact tracing to keep the virus at bay.

“The Cayman Islands is one of the first jurisdictions to have avoided community transmission for this length of time,” said Premier Wayne Panton. “This would not be possible without the efforts of the government and the public working together to protect the country. We have to continue the good fight by now taking up the vaccines where eligible.”

However, the vaccine rate didn’t move Friday as the clinics were closed yesterday. Health Minister Sabrina Turner urged people not to get complacent about the risk the virus still poses and urged all residents to get vaccinated.

“We cannot be complacent and must remain vigilant and mindful of the potential risk of not achieving an 80% vaccination rate,” she said. “I want to take this opportunity to remind the community that the more people are vaccinated, the higher our population’s level of protection becomes. This gives us hope that we could be celebrating another year from now.”

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee applauded Travel Cayman, port workers, healthcare workers, and the wider government, as well as public support and commitment in keeping Cayman largely virus free. He also stressed how successful the vaccine is at fighting the virus.

“We are witnessing that vaccinations reduce the impact of COVID-19 on public and community health around the world, adding to the body of real-world evidence of their effectiveness. This is vital as we seek to find ways to reduce travel restrictions,” he said.

There have been over three billion doses given globally with more than 900 million people now fully vaccinated. Experts agree the risk of serious side effects from vaccinations remain far smaller than its benefits.

Governor Martyn Roper has ensure the continued supply of free Pfizer vaccine doses from the UK, now understood to be the best vaccine available. He said the vaccination rate here compares well internationally but we still have some way to go. “As we reopen the border, it is vital that we get even more jabs in arms so we can reopen with confidence,” he added.

Although Cayman has been stringent in its quarantine rules with the threat of heavy fines and even jail time to keep the virus away from the community, there have been occasional breaches of isolation protocols.

Police are currently investigating one such recent breach, said to involve a person in isolation meeting a member of the public, a picture of which was posted on social media. The local contact has been placed in quarantine and both of the people involved have been warned for intended prosecution. Public Health has confirmed that contact tracing, as well as PCR testing, was completed and there is no cause for a public health concern.

Travellers in quarantine are not allowed to have visitors and are required to declare to Travel Cayman all occupants of the property in their travel application prior to their arrival to the country. The public and travellers are reminded that anyone found to be in breach of the mandatory quarantine provisions will be warned for intended prosecution and is liable on conviction to a fine of up to ten thousand dollars and imprisonment for up to two years.

For clarity, what you are saying is Merck opted to forego selling hundreds of millions of doses of ‘cheap’ ivermectin and instead opted for a rebranding exercise and delaying their sale while demand was sky high?

They did this so they could earn a higher profit per sale, while letting their competitors, Pfizer, Moderna, Astra-Zeneca, J&J and the like maximize their profits with vaccine sales?

Got it. I follow your logic- nowhere.

    • Anonymous says:

There is more to it than how you are laying things out. Yes, Merck are rebranding it no Merck did not opt to forego selling hundreds of doses. Sorry that these facts seem to agitate you. Research it if you are that interested rather than patronise and ask to be spoon fed.

CNN reports today that things are getting worse in Europe –

“Around Europe, leaders are now reimposing measures to fight the pandemic:

The Netherlands has reimposed restrictions on nightclubs, music festivals and restaurants because the infection rate in the country “has increased much faster than expected since society reopened almost completely on 26 June,” partly because of the Delta variant, the government said in a press release on Friday.
With cases rising in Portugal — 1,782 new cases reported on Monday — the country has also announced new measures, re-instating curfew in some high-risk areas and requiring tourists to show a negative test or a vaccination certificate to stay in hotels. Tests or certificates will also be required to sit indoors in restaurants on Friday evenings and at the weekend in Portugal.
Norway is delaying its reopening plan because “there is a risk that the Delta variant may cause a fourth wave,” the government said last Monday.
In France, the government is pushing for citizens to get vaccinated. According to French Health Minister Olivier Véran, the country is “about four weeks behind the UK” in terms of the epidemiological situation and is “at the beginning of what looks like a fourth wave.” While daily new cases have been averaging 3,000, the French government fears that numbers could reach 20,000 cases per day by beginning August because of the Delta variant, Véran said on Sunday in an interview”

    • NothingToWorryAbout says:

There is nothing to worry about we won’t reach 80% by October, hell we won’t reach 80% by January 2022. We will lucky if we can reopen this rock by December 2022 because there are so many people terrified of the vaccine and we have leadership that is afraid to set a firm date which might motivate some of those avoiding the vaccine to get their arm up and get the jab.

Hopefully we never have a situation where our Premier has to apologize to the nation the way the Dutch Prime Minister is doing today – Guardian

“Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte apologised for relaxing coronavirus restrictions too soon as cases surge in the wake of reopening.

Rutte reimposed measures on bars, restaurants and nightclubs in the Netherlands as cases spread rapidly among young people, just two weeks after lifting curbs, according to Reuters. Restaurants and bars will have their opening hours restricted during midnight to 6am, while clubs will be closed entirely.

“What we thought would be possible, turned out not to be possible in practice,” Rutte told reporters on Monday. “We had poor judgement, which we regret and for which we apologise.”

Cases surge, have deaths or ICU patients? Oterwise this is more pointless fear mongering.

      • Anonymous says:

ICU hospitalizations and deaths lag infections by weeks – it will happen. The UK PM’s press conference today indicated that they are expecting deaths to go from less than 10 per day which is where they are now to 100 – 200 per day within the next 6 weeks.

There is a higher force at play here. With the borders closed this is the time for the country to fix it ills and we ourselves before reopening. Have we done anything yet?
No sense in saying this is a blessed country or blessed people and then have to suffer the same as others who are not so fortunate.
To see opportunities in anything is to see the positives even in the midst of gloom as oftentimes, this is what it takes to effect change.
We are in a position to avoid the doom and gloom.
We are in the enviable position of privilege and this should not be taken for granted.
The above could have applied to any country who are in similar position as Cayman.

And then what? All these “open the border” comments fail to recognize that actions have consequences. Opening the border = accepting COVID back into the community. Then what? Home learning for students, masks, social distancing, closing indoor dining?

Some people in Cayman fail to appreciate how fortunate we are and have been over the last year to be living life the way we are. I have family and friends who are STILL working from home and had to home school their children the entire school year. That is awful and I feel so bad for what they’ve gone through.

Facts: 1) An Italian brought Covid to Cayman. he was surrounded by nurses and doctors. The Italian died of multiple heart attacks. No one else became ill from Covid. 2) Covid is real. 3) Covid is contagious, but not a given. We had a Red Bay student test positive. A child cannot isolate alone. None of his family, classmates or their families had Covid. 3) We isolated hospital staff because a shoe was exposed. Again, no staff got Covid. 4) Transparency is non – existent. How many persons have died in Cayman compared to previous years? From what did they die from? Despite a transparent government and a press core, we are left in the dark. Is it fair to say 2 Caymanians, without Covid, have died in quarantine but only one with Covid? We don’t not have a vast population. Why are figures, that would inform us, not given on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, in the time of a pandemic? In 2019, 6 per thousand, died in Cayman. It is JULY 2021, WHAT ARE THE 2020 FIGURES and corresponding breakdown? Some perspective, we claim to be a world class financial center, with excellent accounting firms. Surely we can count? Have we no shame?

We were normal but my family got exposed to it. We all got ivermectin. Only my kido and his GF got it. I will say it again and again. Please consider looking into ivermectin – no one else in my house got sick with the CV (delta version). We don’t wear masks, or isolate, and none of us is vaccinated- we all just took care of the sick ones and carried on as normal. There are huge success stories of ivermectin in other countries were the vaccine hasn’t been made available. There is more than just one medicine for the CV. This is not my families first run-in with the CV – and I have a healthy respect for it.

If Ivermectin was the cure all, why wouldn’t Merck, the marketers of the drug, be promoting it to the masses? After all, as I’ve read many times on this website, isn’t big pharma the scourge of the capitalist world?

I look forward to an explanation on the above.

        • Anonymous says:

Sadly that is exactly what big pharma are and Merck aren’t any different. Ivermectin and HCQ were silenced and smeared because it worked but were cheap. The new “Ivermectin” is coming out soon. It’s basically the components of the Ivermectin drug that works, just rebranded with a new name, new packaging and a much higher price tag.

Finally, someone on the pulse. This is exactly what is happening. Big pharma are money making scum.

Ivermectin is not an ant-viral medicine. https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-should-not-use-ivermectin-treat-or-prevent-covid-19

Unless you get tested you may have COVID-19 and are asymptomatic. COVID-19 can affect people differently. While there are some very expensive medicines that can help if administered early, prevention is better than cure. That’s why me and my family have taken the Pfizer vaccine.

I think it would be of incredible service for STX to provide a more detailed response around ivermectin so others can understand the process.

How did you initiate the conversation? Was it during a routine vaccination appointment (at your local mixed animal clinic of course) for your new kitten, Peaches, who was in to get their vaccination against feline coronavirus (which I am certain you are aware of with your breadth and depth of medical knowledge).
With the family in tow, you saw the opportunity to get some defence against good ‘ol COVID, and opted for the treatment method vs vaccination. Did you get shuffled over to the other side of the practise, and you each entered the chute while the good Dr. drizzled the ivermectin over your heads (similar to baptism in some religions in your state I reckon)?

Or did you opt for the over the counter purchase of a jug and then went home to administer it after family supper? Invite the neighbours over too?

Did you choose the pour on, sub q injection, or oral suspension (can be a bit tricky)?
How did you work out the dosing- was Dr. Google your friend?
Or did you simply assume the recommended dose for cows and scale it to each family members weight?

I think it is important for readers to get a full understanding of your procurement and procedure to administer such an important healthcare hack.

In fact, if you would be willing to share your YouTube channel so we can all benefit from your other medical hacks, you know, your ability to reverse Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, ability to arrest heart disease in its tracks, the cure for MS and bacterial meningitis, and of course the most sought after- how you tame the dreaded hot flashes. You are doing important work!

Readers would be deeply indebted to you sharing your wisdom.

Ahhh the vaccines. There is so much confusion and contradictory information coming at us. What we have been told repeatedly is that the vaccines DO NOT create immunity but helps to reduce serious illness. Pfizer is now claiming that a reduction of protection has been discovered and a booster is needed. US FDA and CDC are saying otherwise. So who knows?!

        • Anonymous says:

Pfizer haven’t yet commenced their booster trial in the US. They are showing data to the authorities today, according to CNN, with a view to commencing a trial of the booster ASAP.

    • Anonymous says:

Well it seems like you are not using your own logic..if places are heavily vaccinated the variant has less opportunity to spread..In unvaccinated states the variant is spreading more quickly but it is amongst the unvaccinated not the vaccinated..hope that makes sense.

In the UK 99% of the cases are from the Delta variant and amongst the unvaccinated. The vaccine is doing its job staving off the virus even though there are still going to be cases where even vaccinated will pick up the virus..The good news here is that for those who do get sick their symptoms are less and chances of death are minimized.

The immune system is wonderful but it is a coin toss whether it will protect you from Covid or not. With the vaccine, you have protection. The immune system needs a heads up and that is all the vaccine does.

That’s great news. I’m wondering if Cayman has a VAERS equivalent reporting system. Would we know on our own or would the health authority inform us if there were any serious adverse reactions to the pfizer vaccinations? Would they inform us if any of the recent deaths were related to or even investigated as being linked to the vaccinations? Here’s a non-scientific and purely obsevational fact. The two funeral homes reporting obituaries have shown a 50% increase in funerals from Jan 1st through June 30th 2021 (111) as Compared to the previous 6 month period July 1st through Dec 31 2020 (74). Of course this is purely anectdotal because this is only obituary reported deaths and not the official count, but it is an alarming 50% increase in the 6 month period since vaccines have been introduced. I started looking at this about 6 weeks ago so some of the oldest records (a few) have probably dropped off because one of the funeral homes only publishes a 1 year history.

This June (2021) we had in funeral homes 24 deaths which is quite a bit greater rate than the 50% increase noted above. Hopefully it’s an outlier and not a trend…

Side effects reported to the HSA are reported to PAHO and the WHO. If the increase in deaths reported by funeral homes is accurate it could be due to other factors especially other pandemic related factors and not the vaccine.

HSA is not reporting the adverse reactions to the vaccine and that’s a fact. You hear nothing from Lee or Rodriguez about it.
