(CNS): Public Health officials said Monday that 63% of the population has now been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while 68%, or 48,262 people, have had at least one dose, as the national rate inches up towards the still undefined level of coverage that government wants to see before opening the borders to tourists and lifting the isolation measures for those who are vaccinated against the virus. The vaccine clinics are offering both first and second doses for everyone over the age of twelve who is currently residing in Cayman.

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said there were five positive cases of COVID-19 among travellers over the weekend. There are now 17 active cases among those in isolation and quarantine, two of whom are suffering symptoms, including one patient who is still in hospital. Officials have still to reveal the status of this individual, who was admitted to the Critical Care Unit one week ago.

Meanwhile, travellers who arrived last Wednesday, 23 June, who had a valid verifiable vaccine and negative pre-arrival PCR COVID-19 test are due to take the PCR exit tests in anticipation of becoming the first people to spend just five days in quarantine, the shortest period since the borders closed and the quarantine system was introduced.

I still can’t wrap my brain around why the US CDC vaccine card is viable proof of vaccination to qualify for a 10-day quarantine but it’s not considered good enough for 5-day quarantine. This is all so bizarre.

Not taking sides BUT when you listen/read all the aggression towards the non-vaccinated, how about a shout out for some aggro towards the vax’d that have decided its a great and pressing need to go on vacation to places that have far worse covid situations than Cayman….its not the un-vacc’d non-traveller bringing covid back, is it? It’s Mr & Mrs self entitled and their desperation to go shopping in person (and i know some people have elderly or dying family to visit, we get that….but those bringing the kids on vacay, can’t wait for the insta snaps peeps)!

Just saying is all…just saying. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?

It does seem that more reporting is coming out regarding potential severe side effects in the short term from all the vaccines. Obviously we can’t have medium or long term potential side effects as we don’t have the vax’s around long enough.

What is strange is that its ok for the media to report (at least for the most of past 16 months), and expected for us to accept, that the number of those dying in the pandemic is due to covid, and not with covid BUT should anyone suggest a person is dying or ill from a vaccine, it’s because of something else.

I hope these vaccines are safe but there are over a million reports of reactions and over 20,000 reports of deaths from those double jabbed/fully jabbed in recent times. At some stage, this needs proper vetting before we all end up regretting taking them so soon

Excellent article in BBC news this morning of Australia’s experience when the Delta variant arrived:

The government needs to figure out a way to get the construction workers to get themselves vaccinated. I am on a jobsite with over 20 of them and all they do all day is talk foolishness about white man not injecting anything and in their arm and using them for guinea pig because they are black. No sense in trying to talk to them and yet we still letting them in unvaccinated..not only are we importing poverty these days but we are importing covid as well.

    • Anonymous says:

Well, their work permits will not be renewed if thats the case. Our company is in construction with a wide variety of nationalities. All have gotten the vaccine and this was months ago before it became a requirement for work permits.

So, let me understand clearly. A large group on this island have lost their tourism businesses, incomes and savings for the benefit of the community. You have obviously not experienced this fate, as you now want to, and can afford, unnecessary travel (which we cannot, for obvious reasons). You cannot wait to depart from this healthy, Caribbean island where thousands wish they were living at the moment, and are complaining about 5-10 days quarantine on your return, although that could re-spread a virus and …… ooooh dear, those that lost get to lose again … not you…..

Do you realize a lot of places are living “ Covid free” just like cayman? My hometown has not had Covid case in quite sometime- everything is open- no masks- large gatherings- been working in person since last July. What you see/ hear on tv is mostly reports of inner city where Covid was raging. Even in the inner cities, people got vaccinated in large numbers and Covid numbers dropped significantly. Everything is open. Masks are off!
      People are traveling!

      • Anonymous says:

Exactly. Such a misconception that everywhere but Cayman is unsafe. The difference is other places are safe AND free to live life while we wait and wait for borders to open.

      • Anonymous says:

Not sure where your hometown is but you do know that most of these people travelling want to go to the USA, Canada and the UK. None of these places you can consider safe from covid.

The Delta variant is growing like crazy right now in the USA. Watch for that to gain momentum.

Canada…well they are just Liberal so no one cares. still can’t get vaccines or even get the people to get vaccinate when they do get them..

The Delta variant has taken over the UK and they are still going through shutdowns.

Just hoping that your home town is not in one of these countries otherwise you may want to check the details before getting on your vacay flight..

It doesn’t matter because – for whatever reason – the government is not using the percentage of those eligible, but the percentage of the total estimated population.

    • Anonymous says:

Percentage of total population is used as unvaccinated persons, including children, can become infected and spread Covid – particularly the Delta variant. The consensus that is emerging is that ‘herd immunity’ for the Delta variant requires 80% vaccination of the entire population.

In the US, hot spots such as Missouri are also seeing increased hospitalizations due to the Delta variant. Those hospitalized now are younger than those hospitalized during the winter Covid-19 surge.
“People in their late teens and even early 20s are being hospitalized and needing the use of ventilators,” said Katie Towns, acting director of Springfield-Greene County Health Department.”

Has anyone calculated the percentage of the population over the age of 12 that has been vaccinated? If there are lots of children (and I think there are) more than 70% of those eligible have already been vaccinated

    • Anonymous says:

Percentage of eligible persons is the figure they SHOULD be using. Government doesn’t want to calculate it that way though because they’d have to actually implement an opening plan.

Kids have not been able to be vaccinated. A quick Google search will show you that schools are being shutdown in the UK and other countries now due to the Delta variant and children contracting it. I’m all for figuring out a way to reopen but you do know that if one child in Cayman tests positive, PACT will shut down all schools, both public and private. I have ZERO desire to go back to homeschooling my kids. I imagine the majority of parents feel the same.

It’s not as simple as “everyone has had a chance to be vaccinated” and flinging the border open.

      • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

You are spot on, but don’t expect overwhelming support on this forum; this is a good place, but many posters here appear far more concerned with their own future vaycay than with community spread within the three islands.

This virus is NOVEL, meaning new, and it may well be years before we realise any semblance of normalcy. The entire world is experiencing the same, and virtually every country/territory/providence that has tried a soft reopening has shut back down.

Our government is taking it carefully and I applaud them for that. Let’s all just be cool and see how it goes. I also am very anxious to leave and see my kin. I don’t want to be locked out of coming home, nor stranded while abroad.

Every’ting kriss. Let’s just take it easy and support one another. My small business is toast. I am doing a small farm. Adapt.

  15. Anonymous says:

Someone please tell me if I’ve got this right.

Fully vaccinated UK citizens get a 5 day quarantine pass to Cayman. Meanwhile, other countries are starting to shut their borders to the UK. The UK itself is shutting down for at least two weeks. Makes me wonder how concerned CIG really is about letting Covid in.

US vaccination cards are acceptable for a 10 day quarantine, but not 5????????? “Following the science” of course- right???

The US will not have a national verification system for the vaccinated. Joe has already said that. Plan B Cayman???

  16. Sheriff says:

What is the point? The percentage of people vaccinated no longer matters as CIG has no intention of actually reopening the border. Once the 80% target is reached the target will change or the population will magically increase.

Our government along with Dr. Lee have made it crystal clear that people vaccinated in the US can’t prove the validity of their vaccine status in order to qualify for a 5-day quarantine. But the US vaccine card is perfectly fine for a 10-day quarantine. Can someone explain that scewed logic?

    Welcome to Fantasy Island

  17. Anonymous says:

So, come November 1 when we have 80% of the island vaccinated, will Cayman stop requiring quarantine periods for vaxxed and unvaxxed alike? Hawaii is doing away with all restrictions for anyone regardless of vaccination status when they hit 70% vaccination rate.

    • Anonymous says:

We can only guess what policy will be in November, but right now, Honolulu has 164 ICU beds, which adjusted for population, is over double our ICU hospital capacity, and with naval base infrastructure. It’s not a fair apples to apples comparison.

We are covid free now but we all know the unvaccinated will be the the first to be affected and will infect those around them. My parents have done their part and gotten vaccinated. If companies agreed to be responsible for any adverse reactions then fine, failing that no.

Drug companies are indemnified from being sued.

So what do people do if the jab prevented them from working or results in expensive medical treatments?

        • Anonymous says:

To be fair, the administering government health departments aren’t fully indemnified…our consent form is not a full waiver of medical liability since it only lists common manufacturer side effects and abridged rare and unusual reactions. With Billions served, there is high confidence in the safety and efficacy of the approved vaccines, even with the storage, saline dilution, extra handling, and administrative liability.

        • Anonymous says:

That hasn’t happened to anyone yet, so the odds are good that you’ll be fine-and protected from dying from covid- just like the millions of others who are now vaccinated. Btw, many drug companies are exempt from lawsuits for other vaccines and drugs, but have a fund set up for claims and damages, so go ahead and get yourself down to the clinic for your vaccine! You’re covered on all fronts!👍

You do realize that you are in Cayman right?..Who the hell else is going to take care of you except Cayman Islands Government? Cayman has always taken care of its people even those that come from other countries but saying that it is not fair of you to expect us to pay for you when you contract covid because you refuse to take a vaccine that is being offered to you free of charge.

Getting Covid especially the new Delta variant is going to be far worse for you than suffering a little sore arm for a day from taking the vaccine. You are worrying about something that “might” affect you years from now based on conspiracy theories, do you know if you get covid the long term side effects could be a lot worse than anything you could dream up from the vaccine? I would rather take the chance that I will grow horns or injected with magnets and tracking devices than have covid and possibly die from it or if I survive have long term side effects.

The irony of this is that you want someone to be responsible if you develop any illness from the vaccine and you also want someone to take care of you if you contract covid as well.

For the past 2 months there have been vaccine clinics going until 8-9 at night. And all day Saturdays. If they wanted the vaccine, they had ample opportunity to get it—just like everyone else. • STX says:

I believe he means 63% is a made up number based on estimates of the population and not an official count. The narrative is that if we reach some percentage, as of yet not stated, then everything can get back to normal. When of course that percentage is stated, then either the count will change and alter the percentage or the actual percentage itself will change. Either way – CI is not opening up until the elected leaders actually see their pay cut.

Gov recently added around 6000 people to the population in Cayman (they have no idea how many people are here).

As they added 6000 to the population, this thus decreased the % of the population vaccinated.

        • Anonymous says:

They arbitrarily added 6000 in order to change the percentage, to then justify not reopening. Where did they get 6000? Someones butt hole i believe, as no formal census or any other reliable method was undertaken.

          • Anonymous says:

Why would they want to do that on purpose? do you know how nonsensical you sound..If anyone believes that this government is artificially adding numbers in order not to open the borders, you are a complete idiot.

They have been trying to get people to go out and get vaccinated and it is those people that are delaying the re-opening. If you don’t have a medical reason for not getting the vaccine, get out and get it done so that we can reopen and do it safely.
