COVID patient on road to recovery

| 29/06/2021 | 38 Comments

(CNS): Public health officials have confirmed that the patient who was admitted to the Critical Care Unit earlier this month suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19 is recovering. In the daily report regarding the coronavirus and vaccines, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said the person had improved considerably and no longer requires the support of a ventilator. The patient is now the only person among the 16 active cases of the virus still feeling the ill effects and there were no new cases among Tuesday’s test results.

However, the national vaccination programme appears stalled again, as just 71 people had their first dose over the last day. Currently, 68% of the population (48,333 people) has had at least the first shot, while 63% has completed the two-dose course.

In order to push several thousand more people into getting vaccinated the government has launched the “One Step Closer” communications campaign tying in the vaccination rate to reopening the borders and restarting the tourism sector. The campaign focuses on getting people to persuade their friends and colleagues to get vaccinated so that everyone can get back to doing the things we all miss.

“The creative executions are aimed at different interests of the community and collective hopes for the future. These are through travel adventures, reuniting with families abroad and having the peace of mind of protection from COVID-19 for those working on the front line and the entire community,” officials said as they described the campaign in a press release.

Focused on the future, the One Step Closer campaign uses photography, taken by local photographer Rebecca Davidson, rather than graphics, with images of local people going about their everyday activities, portraying their dreams for the future and how the vaccine will help them get back to normal.

I am glad to hear this person is doing better. Sad that so many have to quarantine due to his not being vaccinated. If he was a new arrival from a country with limited access to vaccinations that is one thing. He should have been vaccinated upon arrival. If he actively choose not to be vaccinated I think he should repay those people who lost time or wages. It is a choice, at least on this Island. And there should be consequences for selfish choices. I know this will not be popular, but it is fair. If you are indifferent to the impact of you actions,or lack of actions, on others then you should be prepared to own up to said.

      Take the vaccine!!

This is going to happen to many more persons who listen to YouTube videos rather than the CDC or the UK NHS.

Are you an idiot or just plain stupid.

He is a caymanian citizen returning home from abroad.

I am pleased that the person suffering from Covid is on the mend.

As for the “One Step Closer” campaign: I expect we will be renaming it the “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back” campaign in the near future. You know how it will go; CIG will give us the opening plan, then shortly before a new phase of border reopening commences we will have new rules regarding whom actually qualifies to enter under those rules. Or we will have a date set, then a week or so before that date it will be pushed back…and so on, and so on, and so on…..

CIG must face the fact that NO marketing campaign will convince hardcore antivaxers to get the jab.

I would like to know if they have included in the count of vaccinated people the returning citizens and residents who received the vaccine in another country. If those people live here and they were vaccinated elsewhere they should be included. Maybe this question has been answered in the past but my old brain failed to retain that information 😆

stop being such a Debbie downer and try to encourage people to get their vaccination done so that we can get out of this mess.

If you can’t be a part of the solution don’t add to the problem.

      • Sheriff says:

Oh for heaven’s sake – I am not part of the problem. I am vaccinated. I did not even have to be bribed to get vaccinated. I got the jab the moment I was eligible and I have encouraged many friends to do the same. Some have, some haven’t, and the ones that haven’t been vaccinated have no intention of being vaccinated. The reality is a marketing campaign might encourage a handful of people to get vaccinated but it will not change the minds of those strongly opposed to being vaccinated.

CIG has made it clear they are leaning to the 80% fully vaccinated number before making any firm move to reopen the border. The reality is that we will be hard-pressed to achieve that number. This has nothing to do with being a “Debbie Downer” it has to do with everything that has happened up to this point. The continual moving of the goalposts and lack of communication from our leaders regarding their plan to reopen. None of their actions lead to being encouraged.

Is there HOPE that we will get this place open before the end of the year? Sure there is hope, but hope and action are far from the same thing.

On returning to the island recently, I was told that my family’s overseas vaccination details would be added to the stats. That was before they decided that they couldn’t trust US vaccine cards, though. So the vaccines we had were good enough for the % of population vaccinated, but not good enough for reduced quarantine.

The only proven method of encouragement proved here since we emerged from poverty is the carrot, the bigger the better.Offer $100 to all who get there shot and our numbers will shoot up.

Don’t forget- only the cayman vaccination is golden. You could get the phizer vaccine anywhere else in the world, but it doesn’t count.

Let’s get going and make it a requirement for work permit renewals and residency applications.

Some people need to have a choice to take the vaccine or not, they also have a choice if they want to live here or not.

Trying to vaccinate thousands of people who don’t exist is never going to work.

Why are we continuing to import covid. There is no community spread here. The only covid infections some off the flights everytime they land.

There have been literally hundreds of people coming to this island on work permits and to work for government during the last year. These people are adding to out population and I would guess based on the roll out of the vaccines in the USA and the UK many of them are here now unvaccinated. This means that as soon as we open up we will face another dilemma to take care of all of these people who will inevitably come down with covid.

My thoughts on this is that the Government needs to put in place the law now that no one can come here on a work permit without being vaccinated. If they can’t get it in their country of origin, as soon as they are released from quarantine they should be shuttled to the airport for their first shot. This may sound draconian but so was the lockdown, and I damn sure don’t want to go through that again.

Right now we let in every one. Take a page out of Canada’s book…Only vaccinated Canadians allowed..They are trying to get their situation under control and who can blame them. Sometimes you have to make the tough decisions and live with them. We cannot live like this waiting around for people who we know are not going to take the vaccination anyway. Make it a condition that anyone coming here other than Caymanians have to be vaccinated. We will have to take care of our own anti-vaxxers when they get ill but we should not have to be responsible for people from other countries who refuse to do what’s right.

Anyone die? Why do we import cocaine, ganja, guns, alcohol and tobacco?

    • Anonymous says:

I agree but Canada is allowing vaccinated Canadians and residents to enter without quarantining. Unvaccinated Canadians and residents can still enter but they have to quarantine for 14 days. That is what Cayman should also be doing.

We are basically the only Caribbean Island not open to the USA.
We will be waiting years for our tourist to return.

I’m traveling the US now and it’s beautiful. People ask me where I’m from. When I tell them they cannot believe our protocols. They say they have Key West and joke that Amazon delivers there. And before the paranoids attack, perhaps our government could enlighten them with complete statistics of who had died, cause, age etc!

  7. Anonymous says:

interesting how they never mention the age or health condition of these “covid” patients.

The average age of death from covid is older than the average life expectancy. The CDC stated that only 6% of people that died from covid didn’t have other pre-existing conditions like diabetes orr obesiety.

    • Anonymous says:

How about publishing our annual mortality rate and causes of deaths? It would be interesting to know whether or not we had excess deaths with our rigid lockdown system.

      • Anonymous says:

Easy there fella! Let’s not start looking at actual facts and statistics to make informed decisions. Fear mongering and paranoia are way more sensible then your crazy talk.

      • Anonymous says:

this has been done…do your research.
death rates are up due to covid and also from other causes because health systems have been overwhelmed treat covid and can’t offer other services.
now go educate yourself before making silly comments.

If somebody intentionally kills another person they are charged with murder, no matter if they had 6 months to live or 10 years.

and nearly everyone has pre-existing conditions, such as high cholesterol, or even if they had thrush in their lives it is counted by insurance companies as a pre-existing condition.

      • Anonymous says:

Is this a riddle? What’s your point?

        • Anonymous says:

That pre-existing conditions don’t reduce the culpability of the thing that killed you.

I get shot but then also have a heart attack due to a pre-existing heart condition and the stress of being shot did the heart attack kill me or was the gunshot wound the causative agent?

If the heart attack kills me because I’m on a ventilator because of covid (which us making my heart have to work harder) did the heart attack kill me or was covid the causative agent?

      • Anonymous says:

High cholesterol is not a bad thing. It is a very strong antioxidant. Elderly with low cholesterol numbers will die before those with high numbers. But what really matters is ratios, not absolute numbers, which mean absolute nothing. LP(a) is also important. But if you are exposed to sun daily, at the right time and duration, you are better off those sitting under artificial lights all day. Sunlight hitting the skin produces vitamin D and cholesterol sulphate at the same time. Cholesterol is a precursor to many steroid hormones that are essential for health. It is also needed in all our cell membranes and helps the health of the myelin sheath. Google “cholesterol sulfate”.
