Police claim to be helping abuse victim

(CNS): Police now claim that they are investigating a case of alleged abuse after a woman posted a video on social media on Friday, in which she warned her family and friends that if she was found dead, it would be at the hands of her ex-partner and the father of her child, whom she named. The woman stated on the video that she had made numerous reports at the West Bay Police Station and had even been to court to have restraining orders placed against her abuser, but the RCIPS had done nothing to protect her.

The short and chilling video (see below) was widely circulated on numerous social media platforms. The police said Monday that after they were made aware of it, they took “immediate action… in order to safeguard the parties involved”.

The RCIPS said the matter is now being investigated and that it is committed to the cause of eliminating and preventing incidents of domestic violence in the community. However, nothing has been said about the claims by the victim that she has already filed “a bunch of reports” and been to court several times, but her abuser continues to stalk her.

In the release about the woman’s video, the police encouraged anyone who may be involved in a relationship where they believe they may be, or are being abused, to file a complaint by calling their local police station, or 911 for emergencies.

For more information call the RCIPS Family Support Unit at 649-6000 to speak directly with a domestic violence investigator for assistance or advice.

My question is why did it take her posting on Facebook for the police to FINALLY begin assisting her when according to what she said she has made numerous reports ?

        You’re joking right?

You’re seeing a Facebook video and taking it as gospel, with no context or background. From this, people are able to judge the police response, as well as comment with authority on the case.

If that ain’t marl road style, I don’t know what is.

    Alleged abuse victim.

I have seen some of the foul mouth rants she puts on social media. I think underneath all that is an abused caring person that desperately needs help.

Ah yes, this is how to get our RCIPS off their asses. Expose them. We need to get all our videos and evidence of police indolence together and post it all online. Just today I saw 3 active duty cops cruising past while dangerous drivers where in their view. There should be a class action suit.

I wonder if they got those raises they wanted after suing the government because they (mainly Jamaicans who got Caymanians to join their cause, old stand by, ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’) don’t like what the British officers received.

I know of 4 or 5 instances of police pulling over the same father of 2 children Toddler and baby. He was found with over an ounce of weed speeding no lic or ins. drinking with the children in the car.
He was let go because the cops do not want to go through the problems of arresting a person with 2 screaming children. We need the police cars with dash cam so all arrest can be viewed and police will have to answer to the higher power DO YOUR JOB OR GO they only care about the pay checks not humane beings lives. Also this will start a trend where having children in the car can be a way for police not to arrest you.

    • Concerned says:

Employ British cops and get rid of the Jamaicans and you might find the service gets better.

Until Domestic Violence is viewed differently amongst certain groups of men in authority and some women in our society I much afraid, help/assistance always comes after the fact. God forbid it would be in this case or any other such case in the future.

To protect and served is what our policemen and women are there for. Not to collect big salaries and then soon come…help you teetee or bobo.

    • Anonymous says:

Big salaries???? Are you having a giraffe 🦒? The wages are crap.

      • Anonymous says:

The perception of salaries in Cayman and whether they are big or not depends on the country you originate from and your living situation. What you consider to be crap wages might be thought of as a big salary to someone else.

She’s the same young lady that post things on her social media about being a “practicing witch”.. I think she has other issues than just domestic related to be honest. I really think she needs help for real, and that’s not being malice or hateful, that’s true concern.

Witch hunts are so 1690’s. Leave this chile be and tell your police friend to help her.

This is a fundamental failure of the entire system that was designed to prevent, protect and prosecute perpetrators.

Charity pays to train cops handling abuse cases.
“ The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise is sponsoring officers from the RCIPS Family Support Unit in a diploma level training course in Domestic Abuse and Violence Awareness. The local charity is paying tuition fees for family support officers in an extension of its long standing support of the Crisis Centre, Cayman’s only true refuge for victims of abuse.”

    Domestic abuse reports skyrocket
“ The RCIPS Family Support Unit and the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) are dealing with an average of 185 domestic abuse referrals every month as well as 62 child safeguarding reports, according to statistics released this week by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. ”

Special court to tackle domestic abuse
“ The police, prosecutors, courts and community rehabilitation have entered into a wide agreement that they all hope will help improve and fast-track the handling of domestic abuse cases in the Cayman Islands. ”

New CoP orders external review of child abuse cases.
“ Three officers from the UK with extensive expertise in child abuse investigations and child protection will be conducting a full review of all open investigations currently assigned to the RCIPS Family Support Unit (FSU). ”
“ The British officers will focus on open investigations, and primarily child abuse investigations, but will also be reviewing RCIPS policies and procedures and advising on the implementation of international best practices in this area, police said.”

The problem is, review after review, they just roll back to bad practice. They have no policies. Train as much as you like, when the broad base of cops can barely read or write and have a laissez-faire attitude things will never change.

Caymanian cops do not get exposed to a high enough level of work to gain experience and knowledge. There just isn’t enough work here to give them the opportunity to get experential learning. So the standard is very, very poor.

Yet the cry to employ them is deafening. You are reaping what you sow.

If Caymanians are needed to be employed as cops, send them to the UK to do a two year probation and be trained PROPERLY to do the job. If they don’t make the grade their employment can be terminated.

Nothing seems to be changing in the Cayman Islands
You should hold an annual vigil for 21-year-old Nichelle Anna-Kay Thomas brutally murdered in 2014 despite many pleas for help and Police visits. Otherwise her life is lost in vain.

RCIPs still “investigates”, since 2014, the breach of duty to intervene and protect. To simply follow the protocol that already existed at that time. They had many opportunities to intervene yet, did nothing. Many promises were made since then, new people from the UK brought to Cayman and a new division created, yet, nothing seems to change. And no one who failed to perform its duties which led to Ms.Thomas murder were even identified and disciplined.
