Over 80,000 doses of COVID vaccine injected

| 28/05/2021 | 96 Comments

(CNS): Health professionals have now administered 80,120 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine into people’s arms in the Cayman Islands since the national rollout began earlier this year. With an additional 281 people receiving their first shot over the last day, 43,235 people, or 67% of the estimated population, have had one dose, while 37,885 people, or 57% of the population, have had both doses. There are now less than two weeks to persuade around 1,500 more people to get their first dose to ensure that Cayman can use up its vaccine supply before it expires the end of June and reach the 70% minimum herd immunity target.

The HSA has released its vaccine schedule for June and is reminding everyone that from 10 June their staff will only be giving out second doses. HSA Chief Nursing Officer Dr Hazel Brown said, “During this time, we encourage people to come forward for their second dose when it is due, as we have allocated these vaccines for these individuals.”

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee confirmed there were no new positive COVID-19 test results over the last day and there are now just 12 active cases of the virus among the 975 people in home isolation and quarantine with just one suffering symptoms.

See the vaccine schedule on the HSA website here.

I’m sorry, but these numbers just are not adding up. Mysteriously they are getting closer to 70% and increase by 4% on a day when only 278 people get the vax. More importantly, there are hundreds of people ( parents or residents, friends and family, etc.) that have come and gone and those are still being counted. There is no way these numbers are accurate – and most recently they are being fudged daily to make them look better. Why is DR. Lee no longer weighing in on the numbers? He knows the game but needs to stay silent or get packing.

On May 30th, the US had 7,428 new cases, the lowest since March 21, 2020, early in the pandemic when testing was limited.

US COVID hospitalizations are the lowest since March 2020.

Both measures are declining. It is safe to open our borders to US vaccinated travelers to our 70% vaccinated island.

        What numbers do you believe?

        • Anonymous says:

I believe the numbers in the US have dropped significantly. For a year, Covid in my state and area were raging. Once people got vaccinated no one at my workplace ( over 3,000 of us) has had Covid and our local area numbers went from over 8,000 to now below 100. The vaccination works!

For a year plus we were over 8,000 almost daily and considered a high risk red zone.

        Your an IDIOT!

Get out of your bubble and come to the USA. AS Cayman has had its head in the sand for months on reopening we have operated out of other Islands and the USA with great ease.

Has the HSA had all of their nurses and doctors vaccinated? If not I think this should be a requirement to protect people who visit the hospital.

I went to see my doctor at CTMH and asked her if she had taken the vaccine and she said she hadn’t and that she won’t be taking it.

I didn’t say it before leaving but that is the last time that I will go to her office. It is not about her, it is about public safety and for me and my family’s protection. Once Cayman re-opens and we are being treated by someone who could literally infect you when they are treating you.

It is my belief that every doctors office should have a framed vaccination card on their wall just like they do with their certificates particularly if the work in public hospitals.

Cns Moderator, I am curious to know, are you and your children vaccinated; or, just you?

CNS: My family is off-limits and I’m tempted to tell you where to go. However, this one time, in answer to your crass question, both my adult children are fully vaccinated. And so am I, silly person.

      • Anonymous says:

To answer your question, I am vaccinated but my children are not. Whether I am vaccinated or not doesn’t matter it is the principle. We should feel safe when going to our doctors particularly with those who cannot be vaccinated or not yet approved to be vaccinated.

        • Anonymous says:

Maybe you haven’t seen the data relating to Covid-19 and children. According to the CDC and others the flu is actually more dangerous to children than covid. Therefore, you should think of transmission in children with no greater and in fact less fear than the flu. I’m going to guess that you did not take such a rigid stance regarding the flu. Once you understand the statistics it’s easier to have a rational view regarding covid.

      • Anonymous says:

I can’t prevent the blown tire on the car from killing me but I certainly can do whatever I can not to catch the coronavirus..

Doctors and Nurses are there to protect us not to pass on diseases to us. What happens when we reopen and people are hospitalized with the virus and are being treated by Doctors and Nurses and the person that has the virus can pass on to them?

  7. Sheriff says:

The truth is there is zero chance the PACT government will make a decision that pleases everyone. If PPM still held the majority there would be zero chance that they would make a decision that pleased everyone.

With that said we need our leaders to stand up and speak out regarding the options they are considering. What I want is not the same as what others want but I believe most rational people know we can’t remain closed until Covid is irradiated from the rest of the world. Doing so is not realistic. It is however, realistic to expect our government to be transparent, as they promised, and this is where they start. PACT get out from behind closed doors and tell us what you are thinking. IT IS TIME TO BE TRANSPARENT and share the options for reopening the border. We may not like any of the options you are considering but we DO HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW.

    • Anonymous says:

Well said. I expect Panton is waiting as long as possible to make a decision, but the next hard line in the sand is June 9th, the last day first doses are available. He will likely be forced to say something then.

    • Sheriff says:

In my comment above “Irradiated” should read “eradicated.” My fat fingers mixed with auto correct and my lack of proof reading should not be an excuse for the typo but that’s what I’m going with.

Also @ 12:41 I agree that 9 June should be a line in the sand, but @2:08 is likely correct in saying Panton quashed that date with his announcement this morning that more vaccines are coming our way.

is cayman trying to stay covid and virus free forever?

Looks like the decision has been made and we are opening on the 1st of July as Cayman Airways is selling daily flights.

I guess there will be a mad rush once people find out we are opening OR is it our own government airline is selling ghost flights as well?

Cayman Airways has been flying every day since last year!

      • Anonymous says:

        No they have not!

There has been 2 flights a week only from MIA

Now as the government must have told its own airline we are opening as there are 2 flights a day from from MIA as of July 1st.
Or is Cayman Airways selling ghost flights and it own government is letting it do it!

    • Anonymous says:

Hotels are posting their opening dates on the internet and they are September, October, November. So much for a summer opening unless something changes.

    • They have been selling ghost flights. says:

at various points this year. Including June for a while

    • John says:

Those aren’t daily flights. Typically Cal updates there flight schedules a month before. So when June arrives, they should then update the schedule for July. So don’t count on there being daily flights. Currently there are only flights on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s including an extra day added.

How about you vaccinate your own children and let other parents make their own decisions , this is not a Police State……….yet.
People calling for work permit holders to have proof of vaccination to work here. No sir!
Vaccinations do not make anyone immune from Covid. That is a plain and simple scientific fact.

So what about my fellow Caymanians who choose not to get vaccinated ? Should they be allowed to work ?

      • Anonymous says:

A vaccination doesn’t make you immune – correct. It does however reduce the chance of you getting the disease by 95%, and reduce the severity of the symptoms if you are the unlucky 1 in 20. Bit like wearing a seatbelt – doesn’t guarantee you wont be hurt in an accident, but makes it far less likely and goes a long way towards ensuring you wont die or seriously injured if you are. Actually its a bit better than that – a seatbelt only protect your ass – the vaccine also reduces the chance that you will infect others. Maybe its more like not drinking and driving – drive sober there is no guarantee you won be in a crash, but it reduces the chances and improves the chances of others. But you just go on and put yourself and others at risk – free country.

    • Anonymous says:

We have to wait for U.K. approval for this age group to be vaccinated. Hopefully in June & hopefully we will get more doses for them – free from the U.K.

  12. Anonymous says:

If we use up the remaining 1,500 first doses (I think we will, or get very close), when added to 43,235 who already received first doses, this will total 44,735.

This is 69% of the 65,000 population estimate. To this can add those vaccinated off island (such as those returning from university from the US or UK).

This is also approximately 80% of the estimated population 16 and older. And most (but not all) of the eligible unvaccinated are younger people.

    • Anonymous says:

Hope the number of visitors who are getting the vaccine will likewise be subtracted from the total. They don’t live here and are only temporary visitors.

      • Autonomous says:

No one wants to talk about that. The film crews, the contractors, the property owners who came and left. So many people came, got vaccinated, and have left or will be leaving. The lack of accuracy is disturbing.

      • Anonymous says:

The number of persons that returned vaccinated (gotten at college) will far outweigh persons that might have gotten vaccine on island and left.

The timing of the vaccines requires you to be on island for 3+ weeks so highly doubtful very many came for vaccine. Besides, it’s FAR cheaper and less hassle to just get it elsewhere than to travel for it.

  13. Anonymous says:

Only approximately 1,500 first doses available, with 12 days remaining. That is just 125 per day, so we will likely use up all doses or get very close. Im expecting us to run out before June 9th.

So if you are even remotely considering getting the jab, get your butt (..or just your arm) to a vaccination site before supplies run out.

Look at the June schedule and head to one of the sites. There will be no lines and it will be quick.

    Go for it!!

You are truly an awful individual. I am an under 30 who has had severe reactions to vaccines in the past. I am not eligible to take this vaccine and have spoken to several doctors who have discouraged me from doing so. Stating that it is too new and the potential risk of me having a severe reaction again is too great at this time. I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am not uneducated, I am not an antivaxers, nor am I just “frightened”. The vaccine information sheet itself stated that if you have had reactions to vaccines, medications, and foods you should not take the vaccine or should wait to do so. When the information sheet is stating that, why are any of you shaming people when you have NO IDEA about their medical history??

People like me are the ones who are at risk and our lives are just as valuable as yours. Keep your uneducated, callus, and downright evil comments to yourself.

Since you are under the age of 30 and given the survival rate for individuals your age is nearly 100% (argue with the statistics, not me), do you believe an entire population should have their freedoms taken from them to give you added protection, or do you believe you should have the obligation of taking greater protection as your personal responsibility?

        • Anonymous says:

I am a healthy 27 year old and had covid, you can shove your statistics, its been a year and i am still not back to normal. Typical close minded island thinking. I am hopeful I will get my vaccine before I get back to cayman but who knows, the UK roll out is getting praise in the press but I don’t know anyone over 33 (without underlying health issues or is a carer) who has had one yet.

      • Anonymous says:

If you are 30, when was the last time you had a vaccine..Most people get these when they are young. obviously there are others that we get as adults particularly when we travel to countries that have communicable diseases.. Is there a specific vaccine that you took recently that you had an aversion to?

I would say having a severe reaction to the vaccine but getting protection from the Covid virus may be worth going through that aversion. Even if you survive covid the long term side effects could be worse than suffering through a one time severe reaction from taking the Vaccine.

Now saying all of this, this is still your choice but I think in your position you may want to visit with your Doctor and discuss the options.

Good luck to you and I trust you will take it in the spirit of which it is written, not to object to your decision but to say that before completely ruling out to weigh up the possibilities and speak with your doctor before ruling out taking the vaccine.

      • Anonymous says:

You’re not who people are getting mad at as you have a medical reason not to take the vaccine, which is rare but very legitimate.

It’s the types that watch some Youtube videos and read some articles from spurious sources online and call it “Research”, the ones that say “I’m fit so I don’t need it” (tell that to the 33 year old sheriff deputy that died last week in the US, or the NBA players who’ll never play again) or the ones that will “Trust the Lord to protect me” (which he did by providing a vaccine) that make people mad.
