(L-R) Deputy Premier Chris Saunders, Premier Wayne Panton, Governor Martyn Roper, Health Minister Sabrina Turner and Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan

(CNS): Government will be introducing a prize draw for people who get vaccinated to boost the numbers and use up the remaining 7,000 courses before the end of their shelf life at the end of June. The PACT held a press briefing Wednesday that focused on the new government’s first priority, which is getting Cayman vaccinated against COVID-19 before it’s too late. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee stressed the need to increase the vaccine take-up, which is currently at 57%, before the borders can open safely.

Premier Wayne Panton stressed that his government would continue the conservative approach to opening the borders, and Deputy Premier Chris Saunders, the new finance minister, noted the stress the economy is under with the tourism sector still closed, He said returning the country to any degree of normality would depend on more people getting vaccinated.

Panton, who has already been vaccinated, said the remaining members of government who had delayed getting their shots because of the election campaign will be getting their first dose at the airport clinic on Saturday morning in a special vaccine drive, which will mix entertainment and the launch of the ‘vaccine means prizes’ as government begins an intensive effort to get Cayman vaccinated.

Dr Lee confirmed that his team is now in discussions with Public Health England regarding the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children between 12 and 16 years old following the clearance for that age group in both the USA and Canada. As soon as Cayman is given the green light, parents will be invited to bring their eligible children for the vaccine.

Health and Wellness Minister Sabrina Turner spoke of mobile vaccine services to encourage people to take the shot and said that, as the numbers increase, she was working on regulation changes for the quarantine protocols She said she was hoping to eliminate the pre-arrival test, which people currently must take three days before travel, for those who have already been vaccinated here when they travel and return home.

Opening borders will put the community at risk, and Dr Lee stressed that, given the “wild card” of variants of the disease and the unknown effectiveness of even the Pfizer vaccine against them, as well as the potential need for boosters later in the year for the older strains of coronavirus, he wanted to see Cayman use up the entire stock it has as soon as possible and before discussions about opening the borders can begin.

Check back to CNS tomorrow for more on the press briefing, and what was revealed about public finances and the emerging shape of the new government.

So much for Panton’s “transparency”, it’s more like a smoke screen.

  3. Do What is Right says:

How about this as an incentive instead: If you refuse to get vaccinated, and contract Covid, then you should be refused treatment at the hospital. It is time for people to stop following the American mindset of thinking only of their rights, and expand their thinking to encompass their obligations – to their families and the wider community. Don’t complain about the economy tanking if you are one of the people obstructing the re-opening of the country.

    • Anonymous says:

Yep. And put them on a separate health plan so my premium does not increase.

    • Anonymous says:

Yeah, and if you smoke, drink alcohol, over eat or speed you also lose your ability to receive treatment. That wipes out about 95% of the population.

Look how close to the surface tyranny actually lives.

Fair point but the vaccine issue is part of the social contract in a different way.

I agree. Don’t reward stupid by giving them incentives and prizes. Instead disincentivize this anti-social behaviour with penalties for those who are not vaccinated and could be.

    • Anonymous says:

9:14 and what about those who are not candidates for the vaccine? They should not be denied service because they don’t have the vaccine. They are unable.
It is not a one size fits all solution

    • Just me. says:

Or you could just kill them first? Because they are obviously thinking of their own personal health instead of yours? There are just as many good reason not to take it as there are to take it. You choose for yourself and let everyone else have the same right. Or? Your faith in a man made, experimental cocktail of chemicals far exceeds your faith in God. But still. Your choice. But don’t complain about any bad health effects in a year or so after you choose to take it. P.S. the economy is going to tank anyway. Peace.

Wayne, you are the biggest moron of all by including some of these in your Government. Yesterday’s briefing should have been an embarrassment to you!

You are a disappointment, Mr. Panton, and are showing that you are too amateur to be the Premier. I guess that will be evident in 4 years, if you survive no-confidence motions which are sure to come!

You “plotted” for 4 years with Chris, Kenneth, et al. Guess what, the plots against you are already in motion.

This sort of mentality should not be rewarded.

  9. Anonymous says:

This is absolutely disgraceful and so privileged especially when people all around the world would do anything to have the opportunity to be vaccinated. The CI government should be charging those that haven’t been vaccinated after a certain date instead of rewarding these people with gifts.

Take the jab and close this shit down yo those who don’t like it can go bout they business! back to never never land. These changes to our lives are here to stay and no injection is going to now change that no matter how you try to spin it. Normalcy has been lost just like the number of persons who are gone. Your own selfishness is definitely deluding some of you if you believe this is going to some how go back to “Normal” This pandemic has been a lesson to even the ignorant who now understand what consequences are and that life is simply more important than you. Please get your vaccine to extend your life too make the necessary changes to improve your life and that of other around you. Positive thoughts Cayman that is our Normal !.

  11. A regular Joe says:

    Cayman kind ….
Responsible individuals and families who had taken both doses are diminished now that they are “rewarding” procrastination and lack of responsibility.
“Do you think everyone in Cayman will get vaccinated in two weeks “ somebody asked when ready to receive the first shipment, so I replied, knowing how things work here it might take a few weeks…. Now we are around 4 months in a process that in “developed” places would had taken much less.
And the leaders are not only, not giving a good role model but, again, rewarding them …

The CDC is now a joke…someone dying with the virus is a virus death even if it is a car accident, but someone dying after the shot is not a shot death… How do people not see they are being experimented on? They have one single narrative to get this shot in everyone’s arms, no matter what. If anyone speaks out in opposition he receives unfair backlash.

If you dig on the CDC website, you can find the data on the deaths, heart attacks, miscarriages, low platelet disease, blood clots (all 3 vaccines have had significant issues), Bell’s palsy, and other adverse reactions.

I don’t want to be an accepted casualty. Period.

Fake news. Watch less Fox News.

      • Anonymous says:

He’s not wrong. If you die with Covid it’s counted as a covid death regardless of other conditions. If you die after having the shot, it’s not considered a vax death. You don’t see a problem? Maybe you should stop watching fox news.

*CNS: This is a valid question that has sadly been overtaken by conspiracy theories and silliness about people dying in a road crash being counted as a covid death. Here is a good explanation by the Association of American Medical Colleges, which is a lot more trustworthy than whatever shows up in your Facebook feed.
How are COVID-19 deaths counted? It’s complicated

        • Anonymous says:

For the record, I don’t have Facebook or any other social media, perhaps you do, hence the reason for your projection. I also don’t watch CNN, Fox News or any of the other cable news stations. I get my information from data. The article you linked to confirms that covid deaths are lumped together with deaths in cases such as people with advanced cancer in the elderly and any other serious comorbidity. In short, many of the covid deaths may not have occurred if not for the underlying conditions. As the article says “it’s complicated” and I agree, but that’s not what the media is pushing. I also found several cases classified as covid deaths were in fact do to accidents. They were later changed but only after it was pointed out. Are we sure that the count doesn’t include thousands of deaths that had little to do with Covid when even a motorcylce fatality was counted simply because the victim tested positive. I’m not. According to your article the CDC changed it’s method of categorizing covid deaths, good. Now on the other hand, I found an article by a far left news outlet fact checking a far right news outlet regarding deaths after receiving the vaccine. Unsurprisingly the same example of an accident being counted as a death after vaccination was cited to discredit the data. It seems standards shift depending on the narrative. https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/fact-check-have-966-people-died-after-receiving-the-covid-vaccine/ar-BB1en6bL

      The joke is PACT

  13. PACT of Idiots says:

During the elections there were a lot of people who said that it was not the Government (PPM) that kept our islands safe from the pandemic, it was “we the people” who followed the rules that kept us safe.

Bear in mind, the rules were laid down and enforced by the government of the day.

The previous government secured the vaccines for the country and were responsible and got their vaccine as they encouraged the rest of the population to do so.

Fast forward to today: the PACT government officials are JUST getting vaccinated because they were “too busy with elections” or waiting on “the science”.

If they were in charge of running the country last year, WHEN WOULD THEY HAVE ORDERED THE VACCINE FOR THE COUNTRY? Would they have waited till now when it’s almost too late?

We know exactly why PACT didn’t get vaccinated. They were a part of the ignorant set that said “I nah getting no vaccination. Uni nah goin’ kill me!”

I’m extremely concerned that these people are running the country. I’m thoroughly unimpressed with ALL OF THEM.

It’s not that bad an idea if it reduces the number of doses that are going to go to waste next month, the level of which will almost certainly be both embarrassing and shameful. Incentives such as MLB tickets are being offered in the US, which is also experiencing a decline in vaccination rates. Yes it’s annoying for those who are already vaccinated, but surely our overall objective here is to get to the point that government feels it can relax the border restrictions as well as make sure we don’t get told where to go by the UK when we ask for more vaccine for 12-15s, younger kids and any variant boosters later in the year? But I agree with everyone who would have liked to see more of a plan/setting a date for reopening, even if just provisional – the current situation is neither realistic nor sustainable for the economy. And the fact that several ministers have not been vaccinated yet is hardly inspiring, but entirely unsurprising.

Conservative outlook to opening the Borders! So that means later this year rather than sooner. Truth is you can’t hide from Covid, it’s endemic throughout the world. Govt and population has to accept that cases will rise once opening up and is inevitable, but a vaccinated population will keep these cases low, infections will be less serious and very low hospitalisation. So get the jab! No excuses!

Incentive for vaccination is coercive. There is a genuine ethical concern about the influence of such an incentive on decision-making.

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is rooted in concerns such as the warp speed development and approval of vaccines, politicization of the broader pandemic response.

The government would not be willing to pay people to get vaccinated if the available vaccines were truly safe and effective.

If you are christian and believe in helping others, then based on FAITH and SCIENCE you take the vaccine.

FAITH offers hope that you indeed will not have any minor side effects in order to be the bigger person and know that by getting the vaccine you are protecting children under 12 and those (auto immune disease) who truly cannot take the vaccine.

        Not compared to my personal investment portfolio. 2020 – Dow 11%, S&P500 – 16%, Nasdaq 41% – my investment account 73%
There should be an investigation of the blatant white collar theft of those fat cat pension companies ripping off pensioners with their 1.5% MER – they are making millions doing nothing more than $9 ETFs can provide.

Sure, as long as YOU will sign a legally binding agreement stating that if you do not have the funds to look after yourself following retirement, the government of that day can simply ignore you.

Sounds good – my investment ability far outperforms those pathetic pensions which their only interest is charging their fees – fat bastard owners of those pensions probably dine at the Ritz weekly

Sad to have to bribe people to do the right thing

Stupid. So everyone that already did their civil duty gets nada. Like always. Reward the lame ducks and punish the rest.

Wayne presented well. The rest, well, presented.

I have deep concerns about “Tourism and Transport” possessing medical data for the purposes of a giveaway. Cannot imagine this was thought through in great detail. Hopefully not indicative of the way this government will generally be approaching serious issues.

Thought it was well run- sounded like they had somewhat of a plan- more professional.

You mean to continue the plan of the previous government? I heard nothing ground breaking, other than a glorified raffle that seems to still be in the infancy of development. Not to mention representative of juvenile policy that has clearly not considered broader legal and moral concerns. So about what you would expect from Kenneth.

Chris literally read out the same figures prepared pre-election as part of normal pre-elections process to provide the state of the government. It was not noteworthy, but I get why he felt the need to ensure he got time on the mic.

Sabrina had a real low bar to clear, given her predecessor. She managed it, but only barely considering she made up words in attempts to pronounce something else entirely on multiple occasions. (But no donkey references!)

As noted, Wayne was coherent, competent, and unfortunately surrounded the the fruits of forming a government with those who have a lot of catching up to do. I’m not certain he will be able to carry them throughout a whole term without some serious self-reflection on their part to recognize their current limitations and be humble enough to utilize the support of their senior teams for advice and guidance. (Particularly now, where decisive action and clear vision is necessary in a crisis.)

I guess I was just impressed that they were talking about Covid and not full moons plus it seemed to flow better except uneven questions from press.

Even Jon Jon got the vaccine before Sabrina.

So… she maybe able to put on and speak better than he did, but at the end of the day… he led by example and showed his constituents and his people he wasn’t afraid to get the vaccine because he trusted the science.

Sabrina is going to ask “social media experts” to help encourage people to take the shots. I wonder who these “influencers” are? They generally get paid to promote stuff. Sandra must be drooling… especially after Saunders told everyone how much money the people left the government with.

even Wayne was underwhelming. It is clear they don’t have a consensus on how to go forward so they can’t tell us the plan.

I don’t envy him having to herd cats behind closed doors in their caucus sessions.

Wayne was not that impressive either, let’s be real.

          That part

It was at least decent of Saunders to acknowledge the fiscal prudence of the previous government.
      Thank you Roy.

What press conference did you watch? The whole crew was an embarrassment. I am so disappointed that these people are our representatives. Jesus!

Saunders was the only one who came across as being fit for purpose.

How disgusting that at least four sitting ministers are yet to receive even one dose of vaccine. Waiting until after the election my ass Wayne.

Get your jab! Open the border!

Blatant discrimination against the responsible people who have already been vaccinated. Privy Council needs to take a look at this!
