Isaac Rankine at the East End Chamber forum

(CNS): Isaac Rankine, the independent member elect for East End who has signed two deals agreeing to form a government, one with the PPM-Alliance and one with the PACT led by Wayne Panton, is planning a meeting Saturday afternoon in East End, which he says is for his constituents only. A social media circular from his officials said the meeting would be at 4pm at the East End Civic Centre but it expressly indicated, twice, that it is for local residents only. However, Rankine, who campaigned as an independent, finds himself in the middle of a national political issue that many people believe cannot be resolved at the local level, where just 348 people voted for him.

By Saturday morning Rankine was still committed on paper to both PACT to form a government of independents and to join the PPM-Alliance under Roy McTaggart. While Jay Ebanks in North Side did not sign up for the PPM-Alliance and Sabrina Turner U-turned back to PACT after a wrong move when she signed to support the Progressives, Rankine remained inclined towards the PPM.

As result Rankine remains a key player in the formation of a government of independents, which Panton has said he believes the country has clearly voted for. This is in contrast to McTaggart’s claim that the country voted for continuity because the PPM-Alliance Cabinet was re-elected.

However, ten non-Alliance independents were elected, compared to the seven PPM members plus Dwayne Seymour, who campaigned as an independent on the Alliance ticket, and McKeeva Bush, who also campaigned this time around as an independent in alliance with his West Bay colleagues. Consequently, the people voted for an independent majority and have been protesting to ensure that all 19 members understand that.

With Rankine is still at the heart of the negotiations between the independent members, including Bush and some members of the Progressives, there be will some disappointment that Rankine is confining his meeting to his constituency residents, even though his current position impacts the entire country and he is now a public servant whose salary, benefits, administrative and general expenses are paid for from the national public purse.

Social media campaigners are urging people who do not live in East End but who now want to be governed by a coalition of independents to attend Rankine’s meeting, regardless of his intention to limit it to East Enders, to make sure he realises that now he is an MP elect, his responsibility to help form a stable government that is supported by the electorate goes beyond his district boundary.

Wow. Just wow. Bet you’re sorry you got rid of Ezzard now.
    I know I am.

Ezzard seemed to be the only one trying to keep things on the straight and narrow.
Would have thought even more about him had he questioned the redundancy package. Must admit THAT was the biggest disappointment in ALL of the greedy snouts at the MLA Trough.

  2. Concern Caymanian says:

Dearest MP designate Isaac Rankine could you answer 4 important questions for us Caymanians How many East Enders do you have employed at your company BSTG ? Why do you owe so much money for pensions and health at a company you run? Why weren’t you paying your employees pensions and health which is against the law? Where did you get the 300k to pay on you pension and health ? Thanks The Caymanian people would like to know your answers to these questions please?

I hope you know, some people are very weak minded and dangerous as soon as POWER goes to their heads … they are not use to it. They easily open themselves up to corruption. For the same thirst for power that causes them to run in the first place, has romantize them so much so that when they do acquire power, unsatisfied with what they have, they seek for more power. They thirst and hunger so much for power that when they get it, they can’t stop being thirsty and hungry. It is hard for them to let go and let God.

Think it is time that candidates meet a certain criteria…Psychological Evaluation…Credit Checks. Crazy young boy. He is like the fire officer from East End that wants to be the fire chief, and cant read and write.

ISAAC RANKINE CANCELS: … 👉🏽 “Douglas Isaac Rankine regrettably cancels the public meeting planned to be held at 4PM this afternoon for the residents East End.
This meeting is cancelled due to safety concerns of my East End constituents based on the various social media posts inciting violence.

It is rather unfortunate that efforts to inform the residents of East End of the ongoing developments cannot be realized. All East End residents can be assured that every effort will be made to arrange a meeting at a later date to ensure that the input of all East Enders are considered; however, if a meeting is not possible due to these ongoing threats, as the elected official for East End, I will inform all East End residents as soon as reasonably possible of any decisions made. “

So the PPM and their supporters say that the independents are too inexperienced and that they’ve “never done anything for Cayman”?
Wonder what they think about their new guy wanting to become premier.

The guy wanting to be our Premier? You mean the guy that will be our very own “TRUMP”. God help us. Evil and greed is running rampant.

  9. Astor's King Burger says:

Issac is a disgrace and was brought to power by some very on scrupulous persons who consistently interfere and manipulate the political process so it benefits them only.He is merely a tool in their very corrupt work shed that they control. They have simply left him out dry now in this situation whilst they sit back in their million dollar hacienda’s directing the show from behind the scene through their ppm proxies and handymen Thugs. How sad our own elite Caymanians have become so devious and corrupt!

  13. Anon says:

People on here keep commenting about all the PPM incumbents got back in so PPM must form the Government. First of all, all PPM incumbents who won (other than Alden and Barbara) did not have very strong opponents that ran against them to begin with. That is the only reason they got back in. Look at the close margins for Barabara and Alden? Miss me with that BS! Had more voters come out to vote, I’m sure both Alden and Barabara would’ve beenjobless the next day like Arden and Ezzard. People are so discouraged from voting because they feel it’s worthless to vote. They feel that nothing will ever change. People who don’t want to vote feel hopeless and have no faith in these representatives who claim to be for the people. When you’ve ran a govt for 8 years and people see no actual real changes, then you have to go!!!

The people have spoken! WE WANT A P.A.C.T-LED GOVERNMENT. Caymanians have suffered long enough for the greed of Alden and his tribe.

If it is true that Isaac wants Premiership, this just proves PPM’s relentless efforts to retain power to continue Alden’s agenda in pleasing his special interest. I really hope East Enders make this Isaac’s first and last term as a MP.

  14. Right to protest says:

It is high time we Caymanians learn to protest (peacefully but firmly) BEFORE decisions are made. We always wait until the crap already hit the fan and there is nothing left to be done ’bout it but complain and be angry. No! It’s our country, protest peacefully before we lose it.

    • BeaumontZodecloun says:

Agree, however that is likely the reason in the last four years that we’ve not been informed of critical decisions until the ink has dried.

  16. Anonymous says:

And East End people continue to wonder why their district is neglected – first arrogant Arden and a person who broke the law by not fulfilling his pension obligations and absurd demand to be the Premier.
Kind of feel sorry for the average person in East End, not much choice.

Mr Rankine seems to be a reasonable man!

This power hungry group of Independents will damage this country at a time that we can least afford it. We need a continuation of our stability and the best way this can be achieved is for Mr Rankine and another Independent to align themselves with the Progressives.

The majority of Independents have created absolutely zilch in their own lives – how in God’s name would they bring continued prosperity to Cayman?

As for Mac they need to put a cement bench facing the Courts Building and make him sit there every day for the next 4 years from 7 am to 6 pm. Those Independents that were elected because of their opposition to the Progressives for letting Mac remain so long as Speaker, but are now accepting him in their group need to also have to sit on that cement bench with him…

I voted for an Independent and he has already destroyed any trust that I had in him. So if you make a deal with Mac then off to the bench you go…

    • Anonymous says:

      Reasonably selfish man from morning.

Alden was caught in Rankine’s yard trying to recruit before election season even started.

Ego brushing ego. All you need to know.

    • Anonymous says:

Reasonable? And he is not power-hungry but is asking to be Premier? 😂😂😂😂😂

    • Anonymous says:

Seems reasonable??? are you kidding this man can’t even speak for himself.

Cayman is too small. He was meeting with Alden long before election. He hoodwinked the people of East End with a false promise and now he is seeing the repercussions of it.

How could he allow 30 people of East End to determine his future when 348 voted for him. I have to say as well, looking yesterday at some of the people that say that they are on his committee, I didn’t expect any better. Check out their backgrounds and see whose pockets they have been in and you will see what I mean.

How I wish Dick Christianson was still alive because only him could describe appropriately what’s happening here.

  18. Just wondering says:

Aren’t independents independents ie they can do what they want and aren’t part of a bloc?

    • All chief no indians says:

Apparently not. Please go back and look at the Chamber forum and view the elected members who said they would or would not take a Ministerial position. Very interesting.

You get in your car with your family to go watch a movie with you driving your car. All of you are independents, but you all agree to 1. let you drive
      2. go watch a movie
      3. watch the same movie
Same thing with being independent. It is agreeing on the end result that matters, not towing a party line.

  19. Anonymous says:

So…he’s going to ask his constituents if they think he should be insisting on being Premier? LOL. Yes they really took kindly to the last EE MP who made that demand.

  20. Orrie Merren says:

The Caymanian voters have elected a majority of Independent candidates. The mandate from the Caymanian People is that the Independents should form the Government.

Parliament and the Cabinet have a constitutional obligation to “uphold the rule of law” (s.107, Constitution). Elected MPs are servants of all the Caymanian people (not servants of special interests and the elite).

And, when the People of the Cayman Islands have spoken, the servants of the People need to listen. As it stands, the elected MPs are public officials (upon being duly sworn in, which is due to take place on the 21 April 2021).

As such, it is important that the People are aware of what the Bill of Rights, which “is a cornerstone of democracy in the Cayman Islands” (s.1(1), Constitution) and “affirms the rule of law” (s.1(2)(a), Constitution), states at section 19 of the Constitution as follows:

“(1) All decisions and acts of public officials must be lawful, rational, proportionate and procedurally fair.

    (2) Every person whose interests have been adversely affected by such a decision or act has the right to request and be given written reasons for that decision or act.”

We (the Caymanian People) need to peacefully and lawfully exercise our Constitutional rights to demand written answers (s.19(2), Constitution), demand accountability and demand transparency.

It is never too late to do the right thing. If you still have your life, then God still has a special purpose for your life. Let’s all do our individual part to ensure the we uphold the rule of law, which is a hallmark of a democratic society.

Remember that the most important resource that the Cayman Islands has is our People. Without the People, we are just a beautiful group of three Islands. So, I urge all elected members to listen to the People (of whom they are servants) that are calling for the Independents to form the next Government.

God the bless the Cayman Islands and (most importantly) may God truly bless and prosper our Caymanian People.

    • Anonymous says:

Using that logic, McKeeva has to be part of the government.

    • Anonymous says:

The Caymanian people elected the person that each electoral district wanted. The Caymanian people elected every PPM incumbent standing for election. Therefore the people of every district want the PPM incumbents to form the government. – just trying to illustrate that your logic is rubbish.

      • Anonymous says:

The PPM has the least amount of seats. They did not win across the islands. I still don’t get the logic that because the PPM won their seats back in GT(not all of GT) and Cayman Brac where there was little or not competition that gives them the mandate to break up the independents and form another PPM lead government. The majority of the people do not want the PPM. Don’t you see that the people that voted for those that are crossing the line now to PPM are being protested by the very people that voted for them. The people have spoken. Alden and his group needs to understand and accept that..You cannot force your power to rule on us. It won’t work.

    • Anonymous says:

“The Caymanian voters have elected a majority of Independent candidates. The mandate from the Caymanian People is that the Independents should form the Government.”

That’s not what it means at all. As far as I’m aware there isn’t a single democracy anywhere that works like that. Independents are independent, they are not the Independent Party so there is no reason to think they should form a government. We only get to vote for our representative not the government. FWIW I hope a number of them, specifically Andre and Wayne get prominent positions in whatever form of government takes power.

If Mr. Rankin wants to meet with only the East End people, there’s nothing wrong with that. They put him in so they get to see first what he is doing. As for it being public. It’s only public if held in a public place. If held in someone’s private yard, no one has the right to go if not invited.

    • Anonymous says:

East End Civic Center is a public property.

      • Anonymous says:

When someone rents a building used by the public, they have every right to say who could attend their function. Same as when an arena is rented for an event.

        • Anonymous says:

I think you are mistaking the Civic Center for the ARC or the Cinema. One is public property and the other is private.

I think the better question here is why would he need to have a private meeting? In case, he or you didn’t know, he is now a public official and no longer a private citizen. Holding meetings in secret doesn’t make him look very Transparent. Does he have something to hide or say that the whole of Cayman shouldn’t hear? It is his duty to represent not only his district but all of Cayman. If he thinks that the people’s voices in East End and across all three islands should not be heard, he shouldn’t have run for “public” office.

Running away and cancelling a meeting shows how little balls he has to begin with. His comments that he felt for the safety of East Enders because of violence perpetrated on social media is so untrue. I would like to see where that was and he should have given examples.

People from across this island took time out of there day to come up to my district of East End to protest and they protested peacefully just like they did in George Town and Prospect. I was there and I know. No one had to fear for their safety. These people were Caymanians and we don’t use violence like he says we do.

Cayman people are finally standing up for what they believe in and the old heads and the PPM are trying to silence them. Don’t let them.

My Cayman people keep protesting and protesting loudly, let your voices be heard. It’s time to take back Cayman for Caymanians and their children. Do not let the PPM or anyone else stop you.

As social media elements are whipping up fury and discontent amongst people who are not pleased with some elected MP’s decision-making, I hope that they realize that words matter. Be careful that we do not end up with a similar situation as occurred on 6Jan in the US. I would encourage our current Premier-Designate to show his leadership skills and temper this fury being whipped up by encouraging all to be patient and allow negotiations to continue. It is clear what the “vocal majority” wants but the fact is in all the districts that PPM ran, they won their seats back. Two of their Alliance members lost (VF and AH). Both leaders may need to speak with each other and try to calm people and work together in the best interest and love of the Cayman Islands. May God Bless these Cayman Islands.

No, EE did NOT say no to PPM. Mr. Arden was not PPM and also ran as another independent. EE said yes to having effective representation and a MP-elect who said he would work with government to put EE’s interest forward.

EE is simply twisting the facts to say that EE – and NS for that matter – said no to the PPM.

      • Anonymous says:

In that case then if Isaac thought that the Independents wouldn’t be effective, why didn’t he run as a PPM member.

I’ll tell you why the only difference between him and the PPM is like John John, the couldn’t put on that red shirt because the minute they did they would have lost the election.

Why the secret meetings with Alden prior to election? Why did he not tell us East Enders that he was leaning towards the PPM. I know damn well this East Ender wouldn’t have voted for him.

You mean a MERITOCRACY – not a Democracy! A Meritocracy is a political system in which economic goods and/or political power are vested in individual people on the basis of talent, effort, and achievement, rather than wealth, likability, or social class. Advancement in such a system is based on performance, as measured through examination or demonstrated achievement. From Ancient days, MERIT played a major role in the selection of leaders. The Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, Plato, Aristotle, the Ashanti King of West Africa, all advocated Meritocracy. Today, Democracy prevails in the world, a government ruled by the People. The problem is, you get in power those from the mob, dogs with no wisdom, and simple minded greedy persons. A Democracy is what will destroy the world’s governments from the inside-out. It has been prophecied by the Ancients that this will happen. Fools in power will destroy the world! I go as far as to say, a voter should have merited qualifications to vote like at least a High School Diploma, clean police record, and some proof of a community service. And those candidates that seek power should at least have some degree of education, good track history, health-conscious, and respect of fundamental rights.

It’s not really accurate to say that people voted for an independent majority. The accurate statement is that the majority of districts had independent candidates and no PPM option, so of course the majority would have been independent.

In the districts with PPM candidates they won every race, some by quite a lot, especially Roy.

Not saying that PPM necessarily should be in power or not, but this notion that the people voted for a majority of independent candidates is misleading and does not really suggest what so many are implying. Do we even know anything about what this PACT stands for? Do they have a platform?
    Just my two cents

Yes, they have a platform: Caymanians. One word. What else should the platform be? We know what we need to do in this country, the establishment guys just won’t do it, they’re addicted to the game they play with the special interests and think their Lodge costumes are more important than us.

      • Anonymous says:

That’s not a platform my friend. How do we decide what’s truly best for Caymanians. Some are much better off than others. Some benefit much more from certain government policies than others.

A platform should say what specifically they are going to do to improve things for caymanians and how different classes of caymanians will benefit from their policies.

I’m not trying to be a jerk but if you think anyone just shouting “caymanians first” has any real ideas on hours to make that happen you’ve been duped.

I don’t love ppm but they’re platform is basically that a rising tide floats all ships… so they are pro development and that’s part of how they believe they’re improving the country overall. They might be right, they might be wrong. People in the districts with a ppm option clearly think they’re right.

Screaming that we want change but not actually knowing what kind of change (specifically) you’re asking for is a very broad and frankly risky strategy.

        • Anonymous says:

No I’m coming at it from an insider’s perspective, we have already researched every inch of these islands and their people and the best choices to make in public policy are already known. Commissioners were writing memos a hundred years ago about what Cayman would need. The problems we have now were foreseen in the 60s. All a government has to do is ask to see the decades of reports written telling them exactly what to do, and do it. The fact that some benefit more than others etc. is not a problem if rebalancing is what is needed. Yes the devil is in the details but these guys pretend there is some big course to chart and there isn’t. We have limited land mass, limited human capital, limited natural resources, everything is limited so the issues have all been gone into thoroughly already. All we need is a government that takes all of that and puts it in service of Caymanians instead of people hoping to become Caymanians and special interests. I already own property but I hope others get to as well. I have no need to read a manifesto that tells me exactly how I win or lose, Cayman is losing right now, all of us are.

          • Caymanians woke up says:

Well said, 4:19 pm. PPM was around in 2008 when the unemployment started. What the heck did they do? Keep granting work permits and PR, instead of putting in a living wage and ensuring that every Caymanian that was duly skilled got into a job earning a wage that would ensure we all could keep our economy going within our respective budgets; and if the PPM is desperate to hold us hostage, is because they promised their A$$es to the big interests subject to continuing in power. So now, if they do not get back in to deliver on said promises, they will have hell to pay.

            • Anonymous says:

You can’t possibly be silly enough to blame the economic impact of the 2008 crisis on the PPM. Cmon that’s the kind of ridiculous thinking that makes me lose a lot of faith in the brains of those casting their votes. Not a ringing endorsement for the value of what you think the government should do going forward.

I expected them to start taking precautionary steps once the first international major bank closed, leaving more than ten successfully employed Caymanians and unable to find comparable positions inside of six months. Was that not a major red flag to the then newly-formed NWDA? As a matter of fact, the NWDA was born in the LA *BEFORE* the world economic recession hit us. Why did it need to be formed, if we did not already have unemployment issues? Defend the PPM if you cannot handle change, but at least accept that they are reactive, not proactive.

Hmmm. Ok but do you have any evidence that this PACT is going to review all these documents and studies you’re referring to? Is that their platform? That the answers were figured out 60 years ago and everyone since then was too inept to follow the blueprint? But now they’re going to?

Let’s be honest…Sabrina went back to Pact because they’re offering her a ministry which equals more money. That’s probably also what ppm offered her. Bottom line is she’s in it for herself, full stop. So is Wayne and Alden and basically every politician in history.
The only real question is while they’re getting whatever they want for themselves, what are they doing for us in the meantime?

I still don’t see an actual platform from PACT and often it’s better the devil you know than the one you don’t.

Sorry but I call BS. Who wrote 100 years ago what cayman (or anywhere) would need in 2021. Most places didn’t have electricity in 1921.
            Air travel didn’t exist
            Cruise ships didn’t really exist
            Internet didn’t exist
            Tv I don’t believe existed
Offshore service, tourism, tech and anything else our economy is based on didn’t exist even a little bit like what we have now.

Nobody, anywhere, 100 years ago knew what would be needed anywhere in the world in 2021. So if you’ve got that info I’d love to read it but I’m pretty sure you’re full of $h!t

I had to vote for an Independent because I had no choice. That does not mean that I do not support the Progressives.

    • Anonymous says:

What about PPM candidate Frank Cornwall – remind me again how much he won by! Oh thats right he lost the biggest landslide vote in this election.

    • North Side voter says:

“It’s not really accurate to say that people voted for an independent majority. The accurate statement is that the majority of districts had independent candidates and no PPM option, so of course the majority would have been independent.”

      Exactly.

    • Anonymous says:

You do realize that the PPM is an organized party and could have run candidates in every district but they chose not to. They don’t have the level of support they need other than George Town and Cayman Brac? They would have lost in every other race.

The PPM knows that if they had run candidates in every district that they would have suffered a resounding defeat and it would have so they formed some stupid type of hybrid so that so those who are afraid to say they are PPM like John John and Austin Harris could try to get elected on their own.

The other way was to form clandestine affiliation in certain districts with unscrupulous so called “independents” who were really PPM incognito. Not a bad plan if you want to retain power but getting power through deception is wrong on all fronts.

This has been a sad turn of events for Cayman, simply because one party thinks it can force themselves on us for another 4 years.

If Issac and East Enders have any integrity at all, they will not bow to the Marl Road mob mentality.

    • Anonymous says:

Mob rule? Are you referring to winning the majority of seats, the majority of votes and not simply allowing business interests who are keeping the PPM on life support to steal another 4 years in government

If that is mob rule then I am not sure what kind of government you are endorsing but you might want to keep that to yourself

      • Anonymous says:

Wrong. 7 members of a single party won seats. 12 other individuals also one seats. That leaves you with 7 on one team and 12 others on their own.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes because Progressives decided to run for less than a majority so they could horse-trade after that worked so well for them the last two times. Also if you don’t try for a majority no one can say you failed to achieve your goal. They just lowered the bar for themselves and their supporters so they could still cross it. By not reaching for the whole country they hoped to end up in negotiating distance. That’s all they did. They sure as hell have not been re-endorsed for another term, they weren’t even elected fair and square with a majority and a mandate in 2013 or 2017. This is their game and it has to fail or we’ll never be rid of them, ever, they’ll do this forever and never change the system again.

How many teams and individuals were within the Independents that lost? Eugene, Rolston, Mario, Frank,McField, Johann, Alric, Pearlina, Sammy, Ossie, Ezzard, Arden, Elvis and Maxine.

How many did PPM lose that were contested? Cornwall.

Some persons voted for Independents because there were no PPM to vote for. That doesn’t mean they don’t support the other PPM candidates. East End and North Side, could have voted out Arden and Ezzard because they did not support the PPM.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes!!! Not sure when the ‘independents’ formed their own party to start counting themselves in the same group

Every election if the government changes residents/voters say the previous administration made a mess of things. There really will never be satisfaction. McKeeva Bush/UDP were the worst for two election cycles…until PPM took the reigns. Then after these past two election cycles PPM are now the worst. McKeeva according to the people was a sellout because he sold out Caymanian land to Dart; allowed Dart to buy and build and got free concessions. He McKeeva gave free and unearned Caymanian Statuses. Then it has become Alden/PPM sold out to the UK and the white investors/money people/special interests groups. This government cycle is not the first Cayman was on a “black list” or being placed in a financial scrutinized position. This has happened a few times over the past 12 or more years. One thing politicians count on. A short memory. 6 of 1 but half a dozen of the other. It is politics. There will never be enough to please everyone all the time.

      • Anonymous says:

It absolutely is mob rule and they will end up putting McKeeva back in government. She is such an idiot.

  32. Anonymous says:

Stay strong Isaac. It’s good to know that there is a representative elected who has looked at both sides and has decided which is the better choice for Cayman. For the independents, I think its time to look at your counterparts and think long and hard if you have a government that will last more than one year.

As we say in East End, NEVER HAPPEN! Douglas has shown that he isn’t an analytical thinker. Too reactionary and easily led astray.

What he, and Sabrina, should explain to the ENTIRE PUBLIC is what was used to entice them to jump ship so fast. Considering that what they were being offered, on paper, by Alden was the same as what they were being offered by Wayne. What was so extra sweet with the PPM??? That’s what I want to know.

All you fools out there that have enjoyed either being fattened by kickbacks, or being undermined (and didn’t even realize it) should be concerned about is WHY the PPM is so hell bent to get back in. WHO they are trying to keep satisfied. Surely, it can’t be you idiots that supporting them blindly.

If Isaac doesn’t understand that his responsibility extends beyond the district of East End how can he be a credible Minister in either Government? Seems to me that however this shakes out he clearly doesn’t have the attributes to serve the county in a Ministerial capacity.

There is a claim (don’t know how true it is) that MLA Isaac Rankine is demanding to be the Premier for the Cayman Islands! And he won’t join the PACT unless he is made so.

Hopefully, his meeting in East End will clear up the rumors and misunderstanding. Sandra Catron has to be careful to not incite violence by her 24/7 rhetoric. Politicians always flip-flop that’s how politics work. Corruption, ego, and monies does not have to be involved. And adding fuel to the fire is the last thing we need.

“Douglas Isaac Rankine regrettably cancels the public meeting planned to be held at 4PM this afternoon for the residents East End.
