Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon

(CNS): In a statement issued through the Governor’s Office, the UK overseas territories minister, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, has added his voice to the chorus of officials urging Caymanians to get their COVID-19 vaccine before it’s too late. The UK has supplied Cayman with over 90,000 vials, but the supply of vaccines “cannot be taken for granted”, he said, given the limited shelf life, as he noted that the vaccines Cayman has received will expire on 30 June. No one was vaccinated today as the airport clinic was closed, but currently 55% of Cayman’s population has received at least one shot.

But with thousands of doses still to be used, concerns are mounting that the valuable health resource could be wasted.

“I must therefore implore everyone who can to take the vaccine, not only for themselves, but to protect their friends and family, and do their part to ensure you can re-open borders and restart your economy,” Lord Ahmed said. “Whilst the first wave of COVID-19 was a shock, we have seen the spread of more infectious variants in the UK, Gibraltar and Bermuda were much harder to contain and led to more deaths. This is regrettably a phenomenon which many other countries are also experiencing. Now is not the time to wait and see, the vaccines are safe and effective, by getting vaccinated you will be helping your community.”

The minister said he had been impressed by the way in which people across the territories rallied together to keep their communities safe, and how the public servants and other key workers strived tirelessly to keep essential services running in exceptional circumstances. “In these difficult times we have seen the very best of people in our communities,” he said and noted how Cayman had seized the opportunity to attract new talent and inward investment with the Global Citizen Concierge programme.

The minister also raised the forthcoming UN Climate Change Conference, which is being hosted by the UK in Glasgow, where stepping up global cooperation to tackle climate change will be addressed.

“Overseas Territories are an essential part of the British Family and we should use COP26 to show case the excellent work in some Territories to protect globally important habitats, adapt to the changing climate and lead the shift towards renewable energy. The establishment of your new Ministry of Sustainability and Climate Resilience under Premier Panton is an excellent step in ensuring these challenges are addressed,” Lord Ahmed added.

Meanwhile, there were no new cases of the virus reported Thursday among the latest test results.

My biggest fear is that when we do open up is that these same anti-vaxxers are going to be the ones demanding that they do not have to wear a mask or social distance.

We have been so lucky here because we have relied on science unlike the USA and other places in the world that became breeding grounds for the spread of covid and deaths. The problem we have now is that the anti-vaxxers have gotten use to this and believe that we shouldn’t re-open the country because they don’t want to wear mask or social distance and most of all don’t want to take the vaccine. I have had five of my friends and one member of my family die in the USA from covid and any of them would have gladly taken the vaccine rather than suffer and die the way they did. No one knows the anguish I have felt having to hear about loved ones dying and also hearing idiots say that covid isn’t real and they don’t need vaccinations. We have been so fortunate here and it upsets me when these people who do not care or have felt the loss of someone near to them continue to say these stupid illogical things. What’s going to happen to the millions of us around the world that have taken the vaccine? Are we all going to die, grow horns, or become mutants? It’s just so stupid and uncaring!

My opinion is that the government should set a date in stone, maybe December 1 to allow the world to have a chance to catch up on getting vaccinated and some herd immunity. When that day rolls around and these anti-vaxxers are not vaccinated then they are on their own. I have a sneaking suspicion that insurance companies are going to either raise their rates or not insure someone without them taking the vaccination.

We have a chance to stop this virus. We have a chance to stop it from mutating. We have a chance to save our people from death. We have a chance at returning to normality. Unfortunately, it all hinges on uneducated morons. Sorry but we need to require vaccinations for all work permit and PR individuals, and anyone non Caymanian to protect our daft population.

    • Anonymous says:

The daft population need to go take their vaccine. Every time the daft acts counterproductive they are facilitated. Now you’re saying they should be facilitated at the expense of a group that is largely complying with the vaccine programme? Kmt….let them to take their vaccine.

    • Anonymous says:

It does hinge on uneducated morons. But why do you assume they are confined to work permit holders and permanent residents? You know the virus cannot distinguish between hosts based on their status, right?

I don’t think the original poster is saying that. I think he/she is saying that – because we all suspect that the highest rates of anti-vaxx sentiment are in the “generational Caymanian” category – to get the numbers up sufficiently across the whole of the population we need the non-Caymanians on WPs to be compelled to get the vaccine.

Anyway, not to upset the better than thou vax-lovers, but maybe cool off on your righteousness regarding the non-vax’d. Simple facts are:

nobody knows the long (or even medium) term effects of the vaccines (i dont expect them to be any worse than most before you shoot me)

Covid19’s death rate is miniscule, esepcially for a supposed pandemic.

yes, all the rules do infact keep changing (masks/distance/age/etc)

no, you do not have to get a vaccine to save the world, but if you want one you can get one and if you’re a known vulnerable you should probably take it to play the odds

yes, there are many deaths from Covid, but nowhere near as many as reported ‘with’ covid and yes, the reporting dates are being altered aroud the world regarding when you last had a positive test/case with covid and then died

no, vax passports wont be a thing but yes they will try them, and no, vax passports wont stop you travelling without a vax, they’ll let you in with a negative test

Why are all the stupid people so sure of themselves? You say these things with such certainty with no evidence of anything. The only thing in your diatribe that people have legitimate concern about is long term side effects. On this, even you admitted the chance long term side effects is going to be miniscule. The evidence at this point is overwhelming that the vaccine will not harm you. There are more excuses. Either get the shot or admit you’re selfish and just don’t want to.

I’m guessing neither of you are virologists. For either of you to assume you’re right is laughable

Currently the pro-vax brigade are ‘winning’ the PR campaign against the ‘non vax’ loopy people (not my take, just seemingly how they’re seen)

        I’m
Intrigued by the fact that hardly anyone ancrually dies from this thing, and also wondering why we’re all getting jabbed to protect people who don’t need protecting (maths…99.5% don’t need protecting)

It’s odd isn’t it? Unless of course you e taken the vax, then it’s obvious….otherwise you’d not sleep

      • Anonymous says:

Can you say the vaccine is safe with certainty? No you cannot, so leave things be, those that want to be a part of a mass clinical trial can do so, and those that do not wish to take it are guilty of nothing. I would add that the ‘indications’ so far is that it is effective but NO ONE knows the long term effects – Fact.

        • Anonymous says:

No one knew the long term effects of Polio, Tuberculosis, Measles, Mumps and Rumbella but there you sit with every one of those vaccines given to you within months of being born. Public Health also comes around to the schools and gives free booster shots to all of those who need them.

Vaccines are nothing new except when Trump and the USA Republican party made it about human rights rather than health and safety. For the life of me I cannot understand why so many people continue to follow him. He said it was nothing and told them to inject bleach and other stupities to get rid of the virus. He stood by and watched as over 500K of his countrymen perished. When he finally got the virus that he claimed was a “hoax,” he was shuttled off to the best hospital and was treated with the best “experimental” drugs there were to cure him..None of his people got that treatment and instead were left to die alone without their family and friends. To make things worse, after he got out of office he very quietly took the vaccine that he had preached not to take, in fact the same one we have here..To think that some people still stand by his approach boggles my mind…

What if our parents had been idiots like you and said they would wait 10 years to see what the effects were? Do you even know the debilitating effects of Polio?

Come on now, use some common sense. Do you think the millions of people around will all of a sudden drop dead or grow extra body parts etc?

There has to be a line drawn where common sense and doing what is right trumps what is conspiracy and downright stupidity.

      • Anonymous says:

What evidence do you have on long term effects? Please share your source as none of the vaccines makers, doctors, scientists or governments seem to be up to your level of knowledge in order to prove long term effectiveness and thus get FDA approval/licensing yet.
Can you guarantee no A.D.E (antibody dependant enhancement)?

        And while I have your attention, since you obviously are all knowing virologist or immunologist, please advise;
        a) how MUCH spike protein is the (first to ever be used) mRNA “vaccine” programmed to make in your body in order to induce your immune system to create antibodies
        2) how LONG will they create these spike proteins and
        3) will your body create antibodies to any OTHER of the 20+ tissues in the human body that share similar spike proteins such as the womans placenta (hence the postponed rolling out to pregnant women and the warning on the vaccine consent forms about short term pregnancy plans).

I’m sure YOU know all these unknowns and can appease our “uneducated” “antivaxxers'” minds, so please educate us.

Could the Pfizer Vaccine Lead to Heart Inflammation? A Report Found a Link to Myocarditis—Here’s What We Know

How worried should you be? We asked doctors.
    https://www.health.com/condition/infectious-diseases/coronavirus/pfizer-vaccine-heart-inflammation-myocarditis

“That puts the possible risk of getting myocarditis from the Pfizer vaccine, if there is indeed a link, at 0.001%.

Most cases happened in men under the age of 30, and two people have died, including a 22-year-old woman and 35-year-old man. Both reportedly were in good health before getting vaccinated.”

*CNS: Be sure to read all the way to the end:

Dr. Sellick also says he would be “very surprised” if there was a link between the Pfizer vaccine and heart inflammation. “If this was a vaccine with a live virus, you might say that, in a certain group of people, perhaps their hearts go haywire,” he says. “But with this vaccine, it seems biologically implausible.”

Martin J. Blaser, MD, professor of medicine and pathology and laboratory medicine at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, tells Health that it’s important to remember that this is a “rare, rare event” and that the link has not been proven. “There’s no comparison between the risk and benefit of being vaccinated here,” he says. “I want people to understand this.”

Dr. Watkins agrees. “There is a far greater risk to the heart from COVID-19,” he says.

Dr. Sellick urges people to stay calm. “This is an incredibly low risk, if the link is even proven,” he says. “Hopefully, this doesn’t get blow out of proportion.”

Here come the armchair doctors tell everyone why taking the vaccine is a bad thing… Their information is mostly untrue, misleading or straight up lies. Listen to guidance from CDC and approved sources for vaccine information. If after reading it you still don’t want the vaccine, I still won’t understand why. But at the very least you’ll be making an actual informed decision instead of listening to a bunch of clowns on the internet…

    • Anonymous says:

The cdc keep changing their minds buddy. Latest is they’re changing the PCR threshold spin from 37 down to 28 cycles. If they’d done that last year, guess what? No pandemic.

So ease up on your own belief system if you’re equally gonna dismiss others.

      Facts are facts.

      • Anonymous says:

        Total rubbish.

      • Anonymous says:

That wasn’t from CDC but the WHO. Studies found patients in the early days of infection had cycle threshold, or CT, values “below 30, and often below 20, indicating a high level of virus.” How this works is because of the inverse relationship between CT and viral load: The more viral genetic material a person has to start with, the fewer cycles of PCR needed for a positive result.

So, even at lower cycles the virus is being detected due to viral load. CDC is the best place to get Information regarding the vaccines. The people you are listening to are not qualified to even criticize how RT-PCR tests work.

I have a very close friend who is a cancer patient. They got the vaccination and so did my family and I. I urge everyone to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the wider community. Part of the problem here is that because we have been so fortunate some people have become complacent. Yes, we can watch the news from around the world, but we don’t truly know what it is like because of the wonderful situation we have here. Those who are still hesitant… please get vaccinated so that when our borders open you are protected. Your life, or the life of a family member or friend, could depend upon it.

    • Anonymous says:

Just FYI you can’t actually protect anyone by getting the jab, you will only ever potentially reduce your symptoms (check the manufacturers own literature for this info), assuming you don’t have an adverse affect yourself to the jab. *CNS: National Geographic: Yes, vaccines block most transmission of COVID-19

There is absolutely no need for anyone not vulnerable to get any vaccine. The over 60’s and those with high BMI’s (above 30) really should look to get it, along with anyone who has an illness already.

The young and the restless are simply not statistically in any meaningful measure at risk from this. The extreme propaganda from the already vax’d must end

The borders should open of course but even with greater vax penetration, they’ll still not open to day trippers so calm down. The vax doesn’t stop you getting it or spreading it if you’re showing symptoms. (Asymptomatic spread is rightly being seen to be proven nonsense). However as an island nation it is clear that until this seasonal endemic virus is more properly
Understood, we’re not going back to normal anytime soon.

You will always be quarantined whether vax’d or not for the foreseeable future as even the vax’d can get ill and the islands don’t want anyone sick. Probably a week quarantine for the vax’d

But they can’t even do that until they stock with ivermectin and all these now known proven drugs that treat the virus perfectly well.

Regardless of all that, even without a vaccine, 80% of us would never get ill from it (t cell immunity) and of the remaning 20%, a mjnaxuke amount would be hospitalized and even fewer die. These are the facts.

It’s really time to calm down and just live a little without constantly allowing yourself to be scared. You’re going to be ok, vax’d or not if you’re youngish and just fine if you’re vax’d and a little bit fat or old.

It’s simple maths. Everything in life is maths. That’s how it works.

    • Anonymous says:

The problem you got is that unvaccinated can still spread the virus more than a vaccinated person could. It’s not about just protection for yourself, it’s also protection for people around you who either can’t get the vaccine or other vulnerable groups. This is terrible information.

      • Anonymous says:

Let THEM get vaccinated then. If everyone get vaccinated, then only the unvaccinated people are at risk right? So there should be no need for 8:31 to get vaccinated if everyone conforms to your wishes.

        • Anonymous says:

You realize some people medically cannot take the vaccine right? There is also the issue of mutations. The more the virus is allowed to spread, the higher chance a variant could show up that can evade current vaccines or natural immunity. Getting the vaccine is nothing. Me and about 30 people I know all took it and not one of us had any serious issues. Just a sore arm and a bit tired for a couple days. It’s literally nothing.

      • Anonymous says:

You’re close to hitting the nail on the head. But probably not how you think you are.

The first post is right, the vast majority of the world don’t need the vaccine. What you’re saying is they should to protect those who do need it.

This is completely backwards but alas is the media narrative we’ve been forced to swallow.

Nobody in Cayman should have us the vaccine unless and until all the known vulnerable have it. The Govt could and should be driving the vax to every obese and sick and old person and advising them (informed consent) why this is a good idea.

Only then should the rest of us have been offered it. We’re under no obligation to protect anybody vulnerable that refuses the vaccine. Equally we have no entitlement to force everybody to take one that does t need it.

See? It’s pretty simple when you step back and see the solution here.

Once every body potentially vulnerable has had the opportunity, open up.

Reports from in vitro studies suggest that ivermectin acts by inhibiting the host importin alpha/beta-1 nuclear transport proteins, which are part of a key intracellular transport process that viruses hijack to enhance infection by suppressing the host’s antiviral response.4,5 In addition, ivermectin docking may interfere with the attachment of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein to the human cell membrane.6 Ivermectin is thought to be a host-directed agent, which may be the basis for its broad-spectrum activity in vitro against the viruses that cause dengue, Zika, HIV, and yellow fever.4,7-9 Despite this in vitro activity, no clinical trials have reported a clinical benefit for ivermectin in patients with these viruses. Some studies of ivermectin have also reported potential anti-inflammatory properties, which have been postulated to be beneficial in people with COVID-19.10-12”

It can’t be a one way street as it has been and I’m not calling for influx of sick people either but if I’m negative on arrival let me go home by All means and stop the hypocrisy.

    Open the borders first Ahmad.

  22. Annoymous says:

The government need to make their position clear. Set a date and open the borders.

Clearly, there are those who have an interest in keeping the borders closed. They are not impacted by travel or tourism, in fact they are glad there are no tourists, the beaches and roads are quiet.

The government needs to remove the power the previous Administration gave the public when they announced we will be closed until we achieve 80%…

Government need to announce we are opening and if you haven’t had your vaccine by that date then that is your choice. Watch the sudden rush.

We have no capacity for tourists (or for the thousands of minimum wage workers required to service them with little to no economic benefit to Caymanians). Our roads and other infrastructure are already overstretched.

      • Anonymous says:

You are past clueless if you think there is “little to no economic benefit to Caymanians”. Stop regurgitating other people’s comments like they’re facts.

They are facts. Please describe the economic benefits of mass market tourism for Caymanians and how they outweigh the societal costs.

“The government needs to remove the power” given to the public.

Last time I checked the public gave politicians power, and then only for a finite time.

THE ROADS ARE QUIET?? Where do you live? Cayman Kai?

Set a date for reopening. Implementation of a better public transportation system. Finish the horse farm road. Ban all cruise ships.

It always fascinates me that people often precede an opinion with the word ‘clearly’ thereby attempting to present opinion as fact. Clearly to whom? Maybe to yourself, but with no certainty to the majority.

Let us all see what the new Minister of Health does about this problem, starting with has she had the vaccine herself?.

Wait till theres another wave or surge of deaths in the world and itll be like price right and the last lysol on the shelf.

Those who have not yet been vaccinated must do so as a matter of urgency……….. sorry never mind – the facility is closed today.

That is ridiculous messaging. Get your sh!t together, figure out the groups that have not been able to get vaccinated and take the vaccine to them. It is not rocket science.

  26. Anonymous says:

We can’t have it both ways – correctly crying for more people to have the vaccine and then we close the clinic all day Wednesday? That is nuts as are the hours they are open other days – it just doesn’t cut it

Needs a fresh approach – get out to the church’s on Sunday’s (where the pastors are telling their congregation not to get the vaccine as god will look after them – ffs) get to all the building sites – get into all the big businesses on island – if Mohammed won’t come to the mountain bring the mountain to Mohammed

Wake up public health, honorable governor and honorable premier & min of health – stop all these press releases that the folks who haven’t been jabbed don’t see and get out to the community

      Excellent comment – thank you!

What you suggest will help. However, I would suggest that those that are hesitant simple change their sources of information.

I implore all that haven’t: PLEASE get vaccinated. It’s easy and we are blessed to have the best version available to us.

    • Michel says:

Not our Church of God Chapel G.T. our pastors have been vaccinated.
