(CNS): Cayman’s vaccination programme continues to inch its way towards government’s target of around 75-80% people receiving both doses of the Pfizer shots to combat COVID-19. According to the latest figures, 29% of the population has now been given both shots, with 30,476 people in total having received at least one shot. Meanwhile, over the last two days just one traveller has tested positive for coronavirus. There are currently 22 active cases of COVID-19 among the 736 people in home isolation and government quarantine, with four people reportedly suffering symptoms of the virus.

Either Vaccines should be mandated for all or the border opening should be scheduled for June 1st, this allows for all those that wish to get vaccinated and protect themselves to have ample time to do so.

We can not allow the filibuster of those not getting vaccinated to hold us hostage.

After all we have gone through to make Cayman a safe Covid free place, are you really suggesting an anti Vaxxer should be elected into a position of authority..?…one who will potentially undo everything we have suffered for, due to his ignorance..?

      • Anonymous says:

Aren’t you selfish yourself wanting everyone to please you by doing what you want them to do, in this case getting the jab?

Do you want mental and physical weakness to rule the world?

We need stronger, more resilient people, our mental and physical weakening is fairly obvious; as a species we are literally devolving before our very eyes into screeching, whining, completely soft individuals that have no resilience whatsoever.

        • Anonymous says:

No problem if people don’t want the vaccine but set a date to open the borders and scrap quarantine – and stick to it

I don’t agree in mandating the vaccine but I do agree in setting a date for re-opening. Give at least a month notice. Let everyone know that they should plan to have both doses before that date if they want to be protected.

      • WhaYaSay! says:

@ 7:11pm – I agree that this should be a choice. I also support those NOT taking the vaccine being held financially responsible for medical care due to contracting COVID-19 (and potentially spreading it).

Government should mandate that all existing and arriving work permit holders must be vaccinated! No renewals without proof. This is the segment of our population that is most anti-vaccine –and holding us hostage! They are basing decisions on –and spreading–fake news on Facebook. And preventing the goal of reaching majority vaccination!

    • Anonymous says:

We also cannot allow human rights to be infringed. The vaccine should be a choice not a government mandate.

      • Anonymous says:

While I agree we should not infringe on our rights than why did we allow this government to lock us up for months on end in our homes?

      • Anonymous says:

No human rights are infringed if it is a requirement placed on those seeking to come in to Cayman. We are well within our rights to set such requirements. Only Caymanians and Permanent Residents have a right to be here.

Agreed. Too many people still aren’t getting vaccinated. So sad. We have access to the best vaccine. People are out of work. We cannot keep our borders open forever. Can’t see that the current govt will have the courage to open up if lives are at stake!

  2. Anonymous says:

If government actually wants to increase the number of people fully vaccinated it needs to increase the hours that vaccines are given and adopt a more flexible system the way Gibraltar has. Gibraltar has almost the same population, has been providing vaccines for only a few days more and has 85% of its population fully vaccinated.

Make it more practical for people to get vaccinated!

According to CNN’s vaccination monitoring site Gibraltar has fully vaccinated 84.6% of their population and has a further 8% who have had their first shot of the Pfizer vaccine and are waiting for their second. We should be able to achieve the same thing.

If we were dealing with a virus that killed 50% of those infected, fine. mandate vaccine use.

The issue though is that this is not deadly to 99% of the population; and to make matters worse, the data is in and it PROVES that there is no transmission through asymptomatic carriers. So please… remind me what’s the point of a vaccine?

So we can change the survival rate from 99.7 to 99.8%???? Really?

One only need look at the voluntary reports of adverse effect from the vaccines in the US to see that the dangers are a lot more than what is being pushed by mainstream media. https://vaers.hhs.gov/data.html – do yourself a favour and actually look at what is being reported, its all there with doctors descriptions treatment etc. 170,000 cases of adverse reactions since 2020 (bear in mind this is voluntary reporting and only in the US so numbers are in reality much much higher.)

The truth of the matter is you’re more likely to be killed in a car accident than covid.

No worries though, with government’s current logic we’ll just ban driving all together and people can walk all over the place. you know, to make it safe for everyone.

    what a joke.

VAERS data is unreliable as ANYONE can post to it for ANY reason. One person claimed the vaccine turned him into the Incredible Hulk. In addition, its a good thing this virus isn’t very dangerous. However, the more people who get infected at the same time, the more problems it causes. Look at what’s going on in Brazil…

The recent 12 instances of people testing positive on arrival suggests that there may be a need for greater enforcement of the existing regulations. Ideally, the validity of every negative pre-test certificate provided by a person testing positive on arrival should be checked to ensure that the certificate is authentic and that the lab providing the certificates is competent. We should not be accepting pre-test certificates from labs that are incompetent or simply sell the certificates.

Bermuda has had more than 100 new cases, most of which are community acquired over the past few days as a result of their relaxation of Covid restrictions. In Bermuda, as in Cayman, ignorance and irrationality are slowing their vaccination rate and leading to serious problems. According to an official press release yesterday:

Kim Wilson, JP, MP, Minister of Health stated, “However, we need to get as many people as possible vaccinated to stop the cycle of infections and re-infections leading to hospitalisations and death.”

Contrary to the views expressed by some here, ignorance is not generally considered a virtue, the earth is not flat, there is no conspiracy controlled by aliens from outer space and the science behind the Covid vaccines we are using is as solid as it gets in biological systems.

Gibraltar has managed to get more than 75% of its population safely vaccinated with the same vaccines we have access to and is beginning to open in a controlled manner. Apart from the antisocial efforts of rabid anti-vaxers and their non-sensical scientifically illiterate diatribes and scare mongering, there is no reason why Cayman cannot reach the same level of vaccination in our population within the next couple of weeks.

That said, I agree with those who advocate for greater flexibility and accessibility that will allow people to receive their vaccines over lunch hours, after work and on weekends. If necessary, there are numerous private sector and retired nurses, physicians and others trained in health care entirely capable of administering vaccines who are not being utilised. Why?

why have people got the choice not to get a vaccine that is medically and scientifically proven to be our best way out of the pandemic?
its the equivalent of saying people have the choice not to wear masks or be socially distant when required.
we had a police state that prevented us from leaving our homes at one point but now that we have the cure….we are giving people a choice?

New overnight data suggests Pfizer provides immune recognition for at least 6 months, has good coverage for B1-351/B117 variants (which share spike protein traits with P1/P2) safe for use 12 and older, and Pfizer are applying for full FDA approval from limited EUA currently in play, given 596 million people have now had a first dose of some kind. https://www.asgct.org/research/news/november-2020/covid-19-moderna-nih-vaccine

“Two COVID-19 vaccine trials, both of which use messenger RNA (or mRNA) technology to teach the body to fight the virus, have reported efficacy over 90 percent.

These findings, announced by Moderna on Nov. 16 and by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech on Nov. 9 (with an update on Nov. 18), demonstrate that GENE THERAPY is a viable strategy for developing vaccines to combat COVID-19. Both vaccine candidates use mRNA to program a person’s cells to produce many copies of a fragment of the virus. The fragment then stimulates the immune system to attack if the real virus tries to invade the body.”

There are people who cannot take the vaccine for health reasons; some have severe allergies and others have vaccine sensitivities, etc. People that fall into this category cannot be forced to take a vaccine that can have detrimental effects on their bodies. Those who are well and able to take the vaccine, go for it, but do not sit there trying to say that everyone should be forced to take it. You never know someone’s circumstances.

People can be very careful of Covid and yet still LIVE life including vacations.

Having had both shots I can tell you that a) the paperwork takes less than 2 minutes b) on neither occasion did the queue take more than 10 – because there were not a lot of people there. Having it open outside working hours would help, as would abandoning the bureaucracy of specifying individual days based on name. Stop being so sensitive to criticism when the goal here is to get everyone that wants a vaccination done. We are doing just fine equates to not getting to that point anytime soon, and by the time we do already having to then have everyone who is already vaccinated get another booster shot – so the goal will no doubt change to 80% vaccinated and having had a booster. It will never end at the current pace.

Why are they closing the clinic for 1 and a half hours everyday during prime lunchours? Why are they closing early on Saturday? Why are we turning away people based on last name still? This is ridiculous. If I can find the time to get off work and get there and get in line why not allow me to do just that?

It is so infantile that these people can’t think that something is wrong here. This will go on forever.

I still have not been able to get mine because my last name came up during the week and the only time I have off is my lunch time between 12-1pm and I work in East End so it seems like I will never get there. They close at 4pm and I get off work at 5pm. At this rate, covid will be back and spreading in Cayman and I will likely catch it and ie from it.

Come on people, this is ridiculous! There are a lot of people like myself who want the shot and can’t get it because of the stupid hours. Isn’t getting as many shots in arms the objective of this or are we just going to continue to control the people. We were obedient and decent during the lockdown and waited in line at Fosters and we can do the same thing to our vaccinations now.

Why not hire or ask some private nurses and doctors to volunteer during the lunch hours and maybe from 4-8pm in the evenings so that people like me can get the opportunity to get my shots?

Everybody that has gone there says there has been little or no waiting so there has to be some ability for them to do more and better.

We have the vaccines, why not open up the district clinics again and give us the opportunity to get ours done outside of the airport hours.

I commend our Government for doing a great job with the vaccine roll out. I have gotten both of my shots. And it was very efficient. Could use to have some clipboards and pens, but we all managed and was through the process in under an hour each time.
Now the issue become dealing with the fearful sector of the population. I know way to many people who are hesitant to take the vaccine because of crazy internet conspiracies and just plain lack of education. I think an education campaign could go a long way to helping these individuals see that the vaccine is safe and effective. Bill Gates does not give a snot about you. No one is aborting babies for the vaccine, and RNA is not DNA.
We need everyone to be protected. It is sad that so many choose to forgo protection due to a lack of education, or just a lack of ability to discern which information is valid.

    • Anonymous says:

You want me to receive education on vaccines from the same government that educated me on the need for a cruise port???

For every person you can find who is following crazy internet conspiracies or exhibiting a “lack of education” that doesn’t bring them into line with your opinion on what they should do with their own bodies, I’ll produce you 100 who, like myself, will produce logical reasons for not having the vaccine given the risk/reward profile.

I have read extensively about covid and determined, based on my age and health and the age and health of those that have had issues with or succumbed to the virus, that covid bears virtually no risk to me at all. Meanwhile the reward for having the vaccine is more of the same that we’ve had over the past 12 months regardless of whether or not I’m jabbed. Quarantine, masks on buses, no commercial flights and large gatherings cancelled.

Therefore the unknown risk of the vaccine doesn’t offset the quantifiable rewards on offer to me. The risk/reward profile is different for every individual and you are welcome to come to your own decision, just as I am entitled to mine.

My “selfishness” impacts nobody else who fears covid. If you fear covid then get jabbed. Then you’re protected from conspiracy theorists like me. If the jab doesn’t fully protect you then what was the point in having it?

Calculator time again. If 19,000 people have had both jabs and that represents 29% of the population then the 30,476 that have had at least one jab is barely 46% of the population, or less two thirds of the target rate. The vaccine has been available to all adults for weeks. We won’t get to 75%.

In a real pandemic with a real risk of getting seriously ill across all age ranges and health profiles people would just self isolate, quarantine, wear masks, wash their hands and get vaccinated without the need for months worth of bullying and compulsion from government, pharmaceutical companies, scientists and sky screamers in the community.

If people were that bothered about catching covid they’d be climbing over each other to get into the airport for their shot. The reality is that most people under 50 in rude health don’t care, or at least don’t care enough to want to take the risk. Change the rules so that I can leave and return to cayman without the need to sit at home for a fortnight and I’d begin to give consideration to getting jabbed.

Until then I’m not interested in bearing the risk just to maintain the status quo.

No, people like you are the problem. People who will denounce others who disagree with their opinion as conspiracists or idiots.

If you wish to blindly take an untested vaccine with unknown long term side effects for a disease that has a 99.97% survivability factor for the under 65s then fill your boots.

I will not. And it’s absolutely no business of yours to tell me otherwise.

          Pastor Alfredo

          • Anonymous says:

Your problem is that you fail to recognise that even though its very unlikely that you die you can still get seriously ill. And the more people that get the virus who refuse to vaccinate allow it to mutate into a strain that that eludes the vaccine. So even though you are right that there is minimal risk to you, your selfish attitude has a detrimental effect on the rest of society.

        • Anonymous says:

Right, because making rational arguments are a problem for folks like you. Hence your juvenile response.

      • Anonymous says:

Actually your selfishness IS impacting others because right now our country’s borders are closed because there are too many people who think and act similarly. Hopefully post-election CIG will make a decision to open the borders after a more realistic percentage of people than they currently require have had both doses.

      • Anonymous says:

The problem with your risk/ rewards argument is that it is circular. The reward you want are predicated on enough protection for the public as a whole, because a communicable disease means that individual choices have ramifications for everyone. By refusing to get vaccinated you are preventing the relaxation of the rules that you say prevent you from having the rewards that you want in exchange for your participation. You and those like you are the reason that we still have quarantine and no commercial flights. Now I absolutely believe in civil liberties and agree it’s absolutely your choice not to get vaccinated. But I don’t see why I shouldn’t have those same rewards when I have been and you consciously choose not to. Your choice should not be inflicted on me.

        • Anonymous says:

The problem with your argument is Alfredo isn’t inflicting anything on you, the government is and for no logical reason. You’ve more or less acknowledged this in your comment. I noticed you rightfully did not claim Alfredo’s refusal to get vaccinated implied any greater health risks to you and you would be correct.

Could you please use the same rational logic to prove the existence of God?

        • Anonymous says:

Sure. I had a short walk along the beach this morning. The waves were lapping on the shore and the birds were singing in the trees. In the distance there was a faint suggestion of a child laughing, carried on the warm breeze as the sun shone.

          That’s God, that is. Fact.

Funny, I never used the word ‘selfish’ in my post. But you honed in on that concept. Hmmm. I used ‘fearful’. And many people are fearful. Education and inform based on science and logic gives people an opportunity to decide what is accurate.

So the Brit in Cayman should get the Jab before a Caymanian that wants it? But I thought it was only Caymanians that had that entitlement mentality. If you don’t like it, go back to the UK!

How timid so many people have become as a result of a virus that has LESS than a 1 percent fatality rate among those who are under the age of 65, and how it has paralyzed an otherwise productive society. At no time in the past would we have been this crippled by something that is a mild threat.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes, Annie, it just annoys me that people allow ignorance to keep them from the only real answer we now have to the spread of this virus.

Stop watching Fox propaganda and get vaccinated.

And the same goes to the guy who keeps making the nonsensical “open-the-borders” cry. I thought that it was well understood by now why a wholesale opening of the borders would pose threats to everyone here, individuals and institutions.

      • Anonymous says:

Open The Border, I say as well!

      • Anonymous says:

What Fox propaganda? As many lefties avoiding the vaccine as anyone.

      • Annie says:

I watch many news sources. At least four per day, I don’t really see any as anti-vac on any of them. Fox is definitely anti-mask, and anti lock-down, but not anti-vac.. They actually run PSA’s urging viewers to go get vaccinated. Although I think it is stupid not to mask up, and stupid to have a spring break free for all in Florida. I also think it is stupid to allow boarder migrants with the virus to be housed in tight quarters. So basically I think the representatives, both Republicans and Democrats in the States are self serving idiots.

The apparent shame game, and suggestions of lack of education, now being played out against those reluctant to take the vaccine is totally unhelpful. There are still many unanswered questions regarding the vaccine. Well educated people are asking these questions and, yes, are well aware that RNA is not DNA. They also understand what mRNA is and how a synthetic form is being used in the vaccine. Sensible, well educated people, do not suffer from “sheep follow-along mentality” but instead do their own scientific and medically based research. They steer clear of conspiracy theories around arguments for and against but ask intelligent questions and expect intelligent answers. Unfortunately, the latter is often lacking. For example it still is not known how long protection gained from the vaccine will last. It is also not yet known what the long term side effects of this new type of vaccine might be. This is all new territory and, yes, for some segments of society there remains more questions than answers. In a small effort to provide better understanding of mRNA and DNA, and the function of mRNA, here is a link that provides helpful information: https://www.genome.gov/genetics-glossary/messenger-rna

“ Messenger RNA (mRNA) is a single-stranded RNA molecule that is complementary to one of the DNA strands of a gene. The mRNA is an RNA version of the gene that leaves the cell nucleus and moves to the cytoplasm where proteins are made. During protein synthesis, an organelle called a ribosome moves along the mRNA, reads its base sequence, and uses the genetic code to translate each three-base triplet, or codon, into its corresponding amino acid.

Messenger RNAs, also known as mRNA, are one of the types of RNA that are found in the cell. This particular one, like most RNAs, are made in the nucleus and then exported to the cytoplasm where the translation machinery, the machinery that actually makes proteins, binds to these mRNA molecules and reads the code on the mRNA to make a specific protein. So in general, one gene, the DNA for one gene, can be transcribed into an mRNA molecule that will end up making one specific protein.”

Those who suggest lack of education can’t read large comments. They only fall for sound bites.

We, the “fearful and hesitant” read large articles written in scientific journals; we do know that vaccines are pushing pathogens to evolve; we do know that innate immune system is trillion times more sophisticated than man made immune boosters; we don’t want to affect health of unborn children.

And the 💡KEY point is that COVID jabs are being administered under Emergency Use Authorization!

Simply put that means: WE WARN YOU THAT WE DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE BOOSTERS, THEREFORE YOU ARE VOLUNTARILY ASSUMING ALL RISKS THAT COME WITH INOCULATIONS.

If 1-2 years later you develop CFS, Fibromialgia, narcolepsy, neurological, autoimmune, autonomic diseases and conditions, THERE WOULD BE NO RECOURSE, for you were WARNED!

      • Anonymous says:

If you actually understood what you just parroted, you’d go get your vaccine. 560mln doses in arms already with just a few dozen contraindications to date. Immune protection lasting at least 6 months, and counting. Approval being sought for full FDA use in all those eligible, aged 12 and above. Or, you are free to continue to wait for more data that continues to buttress how wrong you are, while rolling the dice with your own body, and families. To me, that’s a dumber wager.

I believe that if employers called the CEO at the hospital they could arrange something–bring the vaccine to work sites? offices?

And where this is not possible, get your boss to negotiate a time for you and others?

Some Darwinian proof studies can’t make the mental leap that: acquiring the virus wound be a lot more health and time hassle, than finding a few minutes’ time to pre-emptively collect a free vaccination dose. Talk to your boss (who would want you to keep working for them).

It appears that only 1 Bermuda person is hospitalized.
If the others are mild enough that people can recover at home, wouldn’t that demonstrate the positive impact of the vaccine?
It’s sounding similar to the common flu.
With those risk levels we could reconsider how restrictive we want to be.
