(CNS): Health City Cayman Islands is expanding and will be opening a 50+ bed “super specialist” hospital at the edge of Camana Bay on land owned by Dart between the Cayman International School and the dump. This new facility will be designed to mostly cater to the local market rather than medical tourists, which was the model behind the original flagship facility in East End.

Check back to CNS on Monday for more details on the new project.

I wonder what ambulances will be trekking people in and out of here?????

  2. Bertie : B says:

Where will his hospital staff come from ? How many families will be moving to Cayman ? And how many relatives coming over in a year or so ?

What happen to Gene Tbompson?? He not involved this go round?

“The new facility is designed for local patients rather than medical tourists which was the model for the East End facility”.Exactly where are the medical tourists for which all the import duties were waived? – the only one I’m aware of is the gentleman off a cruise ship who introduced Covid to the Cayman Islands, so much for the duty waivers.

“Hot under the Stethoscope” – Health City has indeed had many “medical tourist” patients – from all over the world but especially the USA. For years I’ve had a contract to transfer nurse chaperones and patients to/fro between Owen Robert Airport and Health City.

Clearly now, since the pandemic, that source of patients has reduced if not ceased. I can tell it in my business.

I look forward to the day when it resumes – and it will. just so you’re aware

4.41pm Please explain why U.S. patients come here, is it that much cheaper after paying travel expenses and does their insurance cover treatment here?.

Is this in addition to the Mega hospital that the “Dubai” investors are planning to build ?

    • Chris Johnson says:

With a population of 60,000 it makes no economic sense to build another hospital solely for local residents.

      • Anonymous says:

with all of the projected development Chris, 60,000 won’t be 60,000 for very long, – you’re a learned chap, surely the coveted ‘100,000’ is the target that warrants it ?

‘a Super Specialist Hospital’ won’t be benefitting the vast majority under the current insurance swashbuckling schemes, – who’s this really for, maybe the super specialist heath practitioners to populate a 50’ Tower, Live, Work, Play & Wring ?

Excellent news for Cayman but you’ve got to love the irony of building a cancer hospital next to a toxic waste dump.

The Health Minister stated in the press briefing that Health City is offering things the HSA doesn’t offer and will not be in competition with them. Dr. Binoy then went on to mention the services that will be offered i.e. Advanced Emergency Care, Maternity, NICU, Critical Care, Pediatrics. All these services are provided by the HSA. How can the Minister say that Health City will not be in competition with the HSA. Time for the HSA to start considering its future.

For all the nay-sayers about the proximity to the dump, do you not remember or realize that the GT Hospital is in the immediate flight path of the Owen Roberts International Airport? In most hospital planning guides, this is a no-non. And what’s more….the expansion of the GT Hospital was done with this full knowledge? Don’t you think that Dr. Shetty, before purchasing this site from Dart, would have done his due diligence on the potential health impacts of this site at Camana Bay?

Answer: Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? Did you know there are people who are more interested in wealth and power than anything else?

      • Anonymous says:

If he’s interested in wealth and power, he would likely NOT choose a site that would risk the health of his paying customers.

“The development of the concept of airport environmental compatibility has proceeded in several phases. Early interest was exclusively in protecting airspace approaches through height regulations and regulations on such uses as might interfere with navigation or pilot visibility. The 1952 Doolittle Commission report added a new dimension to the concept of land-use compatibility, that of protecting the airport’s neighbors from the potential danger of aircraft crashes. The Commission recommended the establishment of clear zones off the ends of runways, preferably by land purchase, and called for land-use restrictions in a fan-shaped area beyond the clear zones “as a protection from nuisance and hazard to people on the ground.” ”

This concept has been around since 1952.

Mac insisted the GT hospital was expanded rather than proceed with Ezzard’s new hospital which had already started.
Guess he couldn’t stand the thought of Ezzard getting any recognition .

      • Chris Johnson says:

Due to Mac cancelling the Hospital contract with Hurlstone Construction the liquidators of that company sued the CIG for about $1m. Another big Mac winner!

In the absence of hazardous waste regulation and management building a cancer treatment center is CRIME against people’s health and environment.

Such project must be preceded by implementing a hazardous waste management system.

Sources and examples of hazardous waste:

    Examples of Sources
    – Chemicals from diagnostic and experimental work
    – Cleaning and disinfecting compounds
    – Agents used for chemotherapy
    – Drugs that are no longer required
    – Waste from nuclear medicine

    Examples of Wastes
    – Formaldehyde (Haemodialysis)
    – Photographic fixing and developing solutions (X-ray Department)
    – Solvents and fixatives (Pathology or Histology Labs)
    – Engine or vacuum pump oils, solvents, degreasers (Facility Engineering)
    – Disinfectants, pesticides, rodenticides (Housekeeping)
    – Acids, alkalis or reducing agents (Laboratory)
    – Mercury (thermometers), cadmium (batteries), lead (Radiology)
    – Gases stored under high pressure, in cans or cylinders (Surgical Theater)
    – Ethylene oxide gas (Central Sterile Supply)
    – Expired drugs, cytotoxic drugs (Pharmacy, Chemotherapy Ward)

How the above waste is transported on-site? How is it stored? How it is transported off-site? Where it is transported to? Where it is going to be detoxified and neutralized before proceeding to the disposal sites, specific for each type of waste?
Do workers know about the hazards of chemicals they are working with? Are they provided chemical hazard information?

Where are the Laws and Regulations for Hazardous Waste, Medical Waste, Universal Waste? Who inspects, evaluates and investigates compliance? Who enforces compliance?

The real state of hazardous waste management system? It doesn’t exist. https://cnslocallife.com/2018/09/emissions-incinerators/

The crime is NOT against building a hospital. It is the location of the hospital… and a crime not having proper hazardous waste disposal. Think about it.

What concessions will they receive for this deal?

    You guys didn’t understand.
According to the Health Minister, this is the most salubrious place on the island.
That’s why they have the OK to proceed ——–> right in between the school and the dump.
    Great job!

  13. Anonymous says:

Hope they’re going to invest in a full NBC air filtration system for the facility because the way the dump’s going it’ll be needed!

    • Anonymous says:

And it’s right next to the dump ??????

      • Anonymous says:

10:18 You need to get out a bit more.

If the wind’s blowing in the wrong direction it doesn’t need to be ‘right next to the dump’.

A study in the UK found that toxic materials, including dioxins, had spread over an area many, many times the size of Grand Cayman and up to 40 miles downwind from the source after uncontrolled burning of waste. That waste didn’t even include a lot of the nasty things that are allowed to be dumped in an unregulated heap like Mt Trashmore.

I lived in TI when the place was in long-term let. The fires at the dump spread all sorts of crap over that place and look how far away it is.

        • Anonymous says:

Precisely, those who should be most concerned are the residents of the newly paved Marbel Drive.

          • Anonymous says:

I wouldn’t live anywhere downwind of the dump. You can tell by just smelling the air. I won’t even go to Kirks if I can smell it.

Getting super-specialist cancer care in Cayman is excellent news. If you ever had a family member have to make repeated trips to Miami while getting cancer care, you would be as pleased as I am that we are getting a dedicated oncology center in Cayman.

    • Anonymous says:

It’ll also be very handy for treating all the cancers that might develop as a result of fallout from fires at the dump.

    • anon says:

7.18pm Remember all the medical tourists will be given precedence over the locals so you may have to wait your turn.

Great news. The island could use more success. Less back to third world mentality.

Foo foo Arden can’t even keep Health City in EE.

  17. Anonymous says:

Can these developers come up with a more idiotic idea? A hospital in the shadow of a dump which is frequently on fire. Just what is the contingency plan to evacuate a hospital affected by a dump fire? Maybe it’s a cancer hospital?

    • Hafoo says:

Dont you know that they moving the dump to Bodden Town?Thats clear to see.

    • Anonymous says:

Anything within a 3 mile radius is at risk, so you showing up to work everyday in GT is idiotic if thats how you want to put it. Id rather die there than GT hospital! Atleast you can say hey actually helped.

Hello My name is Dexter Layman Ebanks and not afraid to sing my name
For the person-s who will put their fingers in motion
instead of their brains I differ
I can honestly testify that every time I visited the hospital I was treated royally
I have had surgeries for my eyes and for intestinal problems in 2013 -2014 and thank GOD I have never had any problems since my surgeries
2015 I was diagnozed with Stage 4 cancer at the base of my tongue
Before I went to Baptist Hospital in Miami for treatment the Referral Dept. at HSA did a Wonderful Job in making arrangement so that everything would go as planned
Thanks GOD for 6 years now everything has been good and No further problems with Cancer
2017 I had to have an emergency life saving operation
I remember Doctor Mathews coming to my room at the Hospital at about 7 am on that Monday morning and talking assuring me about the seriousness of my problem and said if they don’t operate that Monday Morning I wouldn’t live to see Wednesday off that week
My surgery was a success and felt a bit sore and was in no pain at all and by Friday of that week I was eating solid foods
I guess I could go on about all that POSSITIVE things about HSA but for all the NEGITIVE people that wouldn’t make any difference
Anyone can be contact at 916 – 0754 if they want to talk about the above
GOD Bless and have a WONDERFUL day
        Dexter

        • Roger Davies says:

Well said Dexter. For once some undeniable and POSITIVE facts about our hospital. I had a hernia operation there some years ago, everything went like clockwork, and I walked out the same day.
