Scene of the crash at Coe Wood Beach

(CNS): One person was critically injured and three others, including two children, were badly hurt after a personal watercraft left the water and ploughed into a cabana at Coe Wood Beach in Bodden Town around 10:30 Saturday morning. Both the children and one adult were on the PWC. The fourth person to be injured was inside the cabana when it crashed into the wooden structure, which then collapsed.

All four of the injured people remain in hospital as police investigate how the crash occurred.

The throttle was stuck, therefore he had no control over the speed. It happened very quickly and there was little time to react, especially with 2 children on the craft with him. It had to be terrifying for him and the kids. Lets all pray for full recovery instead of negative comments, accidents DO happen!

How fast was he going with kids on it? Seems to me the throttle being stuck wouldn’t have been an issue if he wasn’t driving like a maniac.

You obviously have not experienced a stuck throttle on a PWC. There is nothing you can do but pull the kill switch. Some of these PWC’s are 1800cc motors with about 250-260 HP. The power to weight ratio makes these crafts accelerate very quickly. This was nothing more than an accident that can happen to anyone.

Lets talk about the cyclist on Sundays who ride in the middle of the road and disregard vehicles and force drivers to overtake into the opposite lance to pass them.

They have no courtesy to consider to ride in a single file line, some day when they are all riding in a cluster, it only takes one rider to take them all down and the vehicle behind them to run over them. Only then, Aldin will make a designated bicycle lane for his buddies and start having safe practice Sunday rides. CIMRA have a safe motorcycle ride practie they should too if they are on the road.

Cyclists disregard motor vehicles?!? I think you have it all backwards. They are lawful road-users, vehicles in their own right, and are allowed to occupy the road space they got to before you. Just like the other pickup drivers, you are going to have to chill out, put down your beer, and wait your turn to overtake them when and where it is safe to do so.

      • Anonymous says:

But they don’t do that here. They would rather drive into oncoming traffic than wait 5 seconds to overtake safely.

As a bike rider my self. I have witnessed both irresponsible drivers while riding and very irresponsible riders while driving. And the logic that cars should wait doesn’t really work buddy. I for sure do not stay in the way of cars just because “I was riding there first”. I’ve never seen a car in the hospital after being hit by a rider. It is also my responsibility to protect my self. If I get hit and die, me being there first or not would be the least. Practice safe riding and driving everyone! Put the ego aside!

11:55 am, wait your turn when it’s safe to cross them bicycles riders. Are
you crazy. They should ride on the side of the road where its always safety cross them. In other parts often world vehicles drivers can get a ticket for driving too slow, holding up traffic

How terrifying…..especially for the kids! Hope they make full recoveries.

About time these lethal machines were properly regulated. A few years ago I was on the beach at The Westin when an American cruise passenger was killed by one of these things, I will never forget seeing his dead body being dragged onto the beach by a dive boat which had gone to the rescue.
At the Morritt’s they are allowed to be driven at speed near where people are swimming and snorkeling, none of the staff dare say anything to a paying customer. They are well known in the US to cause numerous fatal accidents.

    • Anonymous says:

Actually what happens at Morritts is that snorkellers ignore instruction on where it is safe to snorkel and instead venture into the clearly marked off area that is for use by JetSkis. Not the staffs fault and not that of the jet skiers either – its the snorkellers with their heads in the water that can’t hear the shouts of staff warning them they are in the jet ski area.

      • Anonymous says:

“Actually” – I could show you phone footage of jet skiers riding within a few feet of Morritt’s dock and failing to slow down at the point they are supposed to. Staff sitting by doing nothing, putting other guests at risk for the sake of clawing in a few extra $$.
Cayman has a bad enough record for water-related deaths without actively courting more of them.

I would like to see this footage please. If it indeed shows what you say, then I am in a position to take that further, and take it up with the management. Its not been my personal experience but if you have proof, I will take it forward. Please put this phone footage online and post a link.

All those assumptions from the “professionals”, without knowing any details…sickening. You’d think the audience on CNS has higher standards than another so called “news site”. I hope all parties involved will recover quickly and the cause of this horrible accident will be determined.

10:11am your a bit of a imbecile. Obviously the driver is a Caymanian that knows everything about the sea and watercrafts just because he is Caymanian. Hopefully the 2″ x 8″ and 6″ x 6″ treated lumber knocked him hard enough to make him realize that knowledge doesn’t come from being born. Thank God his kids are going to be okay along with the cabana person. But for ever traumatized by Daddy’s little stunts.

Dang tourists… Oh wait, we don’t have any…

    What a peanut.

  9. Anonymous says:

Evidently most people lose their minds when they are on one of those things.

  10. Anonymous says:

Shockers! These people cruise everywhere at crazy speeds and they have no idea what they are even doing half the time. They are the crotch rockets of the sea.

  11. Anonymous says:

I cannot believe that this was done on purpose (the speed).

Please do not assume that this man would intentionally speed of the water and up the beach with his children onboard with him.
Let’s give the benefit of doubt here and find out what caused the PWC to take off like that.

  12. Anonymous says:

Speed kills. Most watercraft operators know that the speed limit is 5 knots within 200 yards of the shoreline.

    • SSM345 says:

For the waverunner to get that far up the beach, and continuing after smashing into the cabana, they must have been doing 60 or 70+ when they hit the sand?

$10 the driver is not charged with anything?

      i. Speeding within 200yds;

      ii. Reckless endangerment of children’s lives (or equivalent law; if there is one for watercraft?);

iii. any other laws fitting the situation.

    • Anonymous says:

Doesn’t seem to apply to wave runners though… always wondered how they get away with the racing in South Sound
