Eight travellers positive for COVID-19

(CNS): Another eight travellers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest batch of 500 results that were released Monday, one of whom is suffering symptoms of the virus. Meanwhile, the vaccination tally has reached more than 9,000 and more than half of Cayman’s seniors have now received their first dose and over 1,500 people have had both shots.

In the latest release of COVID-19 statistics, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said that seven of the eight travellers who tested positive over the weekend were asymptomatic and while one person is showing symptoms, but that individual is not in hospital. The number of active cases among those in isolation is currently 28 and six have symptoms of the virus. The number of people in a government facility or isolating at home is 691.

Meanwhile, 9,143 doses of the vaccine have been administered to just under 7,598 people, with 1,545 now having received both doses.

Public Health officials said some data still had to be collated but initial calculations show that around 46% of the over 60s and 57% of those aged over 70 years have received at least their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

On Tuesday the West Bay Clinic and the ORIA vaccine location will be open for shots to all those in stage one on an alphabetical basis starting with surnames A-F at 9am at both locations.

Side effects of COVID crisis impacting health system ( Compass).

Nobody seems to be taking about real life impacts of covid19 on people with cancer.

Who is to decide who lives and who dies?

Saving people from COVID, but sacrificing others to cancer? Value lives of some people, but treating others as easily disposable?

If a traveler has been vaccinated and pre tested negative, why would they not be welcomed? Implement a baggage/ luggage sanitization at the airport. If no one brings it in, then everyone is safe. There are hundreds of thousands, of not millions of people vaccinated willing to spend lots of money in Grand Cayman.

    • Anonymous says:

Vaccinated people can still import the virus. Those with money should be welcomed, through quarantine.

Thank you and as we are seeing on a daily basis the pretesting protocol that is accepted at the moment is still letting in lots of infected people. Maybe we need to implement day of departure testing the way some other countries are doing.

Didn’t know Covid excluded the wealthy? Not many people want to pay to quarantine for 15 days before a holiday even starts.

Another uneducated comment from someone who thinks the virus hides in a suitcase.

So if those who are getting vaccinated against Covid 19 are now not protected from the new (2nd) UK variant called E484K, does that mean that we have to start the vaccination program all over again?

    • Anonymous says:

Essentially, yes, until we can get and stay ahead of the mutations.

      • Hogwash says:

3.16pm I understand they have produced a hybrid potato in Kent which if after being frozen in liquid nitrogen and then thawed and fried in chip form and eaten within 72 hours will give immunity to the tne UK variant.

CNN announced this morning that a new UK variant has been identified that is likely not covered by the current vaccines. That is another extremely good reason to restrict travel to reasons that everyone agrees are essential rather than allowing travel for essential partying.

From CNN’s Michael Nedelman and Nina Avramova

A mutation that could allow Covid-19 to escape antibody protection has now been found in samples of a rapidly spreading strain in the UK, according to a report by Public Health England on Monday.

The mutation, called E484K, was already part of the genetic signature of variants linked to South Africa and Brazil.

According to the PHE report, the mutation has been newly detected in at least 11 samples of the UK’s B.1.1.7 strain. It also appears some of these samples may have acquired this mutation independently, instead of spreading from a single case.

This could mean a variant already known to be more transmissible also risks becoming somewhat resistant to the immune protection offered by vaccines, or more likely to cause reinfection among people who were previously infected, experts say.

Government needs to have criteria for allowing people to leave and come back as many other countries are now doing. Partying, shopping and hanging with friends and relatives should not be accepted as reasons for travel when such travel increases both the cost (of quarantine) and the risk for the rest of us.

    • Anonymous says:

Using the word party as a verb should also result in denial of entry to the islands or instant deportation if you are already here.

I thought the private sector said that the pre arrival test would prevent COVID-19 positive persons from getting on the plane.zzzzzzzzzz

Thank you CIG for keeping us safe.

  7. Anonymous says:

Government needs to fully investigate people testing positive on arrival to see what is going wrong. We have no evidence that anyone is being turned away because of a positive pretest and we have the same rate of infection as before pretesting. Either the preflight test results are not worth the paper they are printed on or something else is going on particularly now that rates of infection are starting to drop in the US and UK.

The only issue is that Cayman tests are being run through excessive cycles and picking up stuff that’s not even Covid.

It worries me that Govt doesn’t track how many non-residents have received this. 46% of the over 60s includes a number of parents here visiting their children. So do we know the % of actual residents over 60 who have had the vaccine?

    • Anonymous says:

Have any elderly caymanians/residents who want the vaccine not had it yet? If not why not? Given there has been ample opportunity for all these groups to have their jabs by now, what is the problem? You can’t make people take it.

      • Anonymous says:

Yep – lot of chatter about how we shouldn’t vaccinate those at lesser risk before high risk groups are covered, but we are holding back from vaccinating those who want to be vaccinated by reserving vaccine for those who have had weeks to get vaccinated and show no intention of doing so.

Here is a very interesting line from a NY Times article yesterday. It seems to me that Dr. Lee is focused on eradication while we have to remember we will never eradicate this.

“Whether you realize it or not, you have almost certainly had a coronavirus. Coronaviruses have been circulating for decades if not centuries, and they’re often mild. The common cold can be a coronavirus. The world isn’t going to eliminate coronaviruses — or this particular one, known as SARS-CoV-2 — anytime soon.

Yet we don’t need to eliminate it for life to return to normal. We instead need to downgrade it from a deadly pandemic to a normal virus. Once that happens, adults can go back to work, and children back to school. Grandparents can nuzzle their grandchildren, and you can meet your friends at a restaurant.

As Dr. Ashish Jha, the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, told me this weekend: “I don’t actually care about infections. I care about hospitalizations and deaths and long-term complications.”

It seems like him and Alden have zero interest in learning how to exist (and thrive!!) in a world with Covid. It is never going to be gone. Never. Oh well, when they finish destroying people’s livelihoods and lives, I hope they realize that the collateral damage will be far more than Covid would have caused.

8 positives. Just shows we need to keep the quarantine system until all willing adults in Cayman have been vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

Let’s not forget that there will still be some with allergies that cannot take the vaccine, even if they want it, plus all children under 16. I don’t know how we get to 70% vaccinated without counting children as human beings. We will need to keep logic-based controls over who gets to access our rarified community. We really have something special going on, and should value that appropriately. I am disappointed that this government hasn’t adjusted the date of commencement of their new travel policy, even given the recognition of what is concurrently happening everywhere these planes would be coming in from. Let’s not blow it.

    • Anonymous says:

Yeh let us not worry about the kids

    • Anonymous says:

We also need to be sure that the vaccinations that are being given now will work against the new strains that are coming out almost every week. If we allow in anyone with the new strain that is not affected by the current vaccines then we are in trouble.

  14. Anonymous says:

Whatever happened to getting a negative test before arrival. Are they giving the airlines fake results. I haven’t heard of anyone yet being denied from travelling.

Any of these people that test positive particularly those that are symptomatic should be moved to a government facility. We have had so many breaches and although we have been lucky so far, it only takes one of these breaches to get out with the UK variant and kill off half our population.

We need to start taking this more seriously. We don’t have COVID here but everyday we are importing people that do.

  15. Anonymous says:

    more imported cases… SHOCKING

  16. Anonymous says:

Maybe the government should start the new proposed testing that is for vaccinated people now! Day 0, 5, 10, 15 after arrival. We could really then see if we need 14 days or not.

NO STIMULUS CHEQUES LIKE EVERY OTHER COUNTRY THEN GOVERNMENT SHOULD ALLOW ANOTHER PENSION WITHDRAWAL!!!!!
Pension plans give pathetic returns far inferior to $9 ETF index funds like QQQ
    RELEASE THE FUNDS!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Yeah, but the problem is people don’t take the money out the pension funds and invest it themself. People buy dumb sh1t like TVs and then when they come to retire will have nothing and need constant handouts.

      • Anonymous says:

If buying a tv, or even a car, screws one’s future, then one didn’t have enough pension to survive on anyway. This is Cayman bobo, need PLENTY to live here.

The borders will not fully open this year. Plan accordingly.

What are your plans for your retirement? You prepared to take the money now – then what?

      • Anonymous says:

it just goes to show you you can be tested 72 hours and come up negative then positive after.

Multiply $60,000 times 1.5 percent and then multiply by 30 years of career. The annual pension withdrawal amount comes to $27,000. That would be paid in monthly installments. In this example, the employee will get a gross monthly pension of $2,250. That’s before rent, strata, utilities, telephone, and medical bills. Is there anything left for food after basic needs are subtracted? How much is left for entertainment? How much for travel? If that’s all we’re planning to sock away for our golden years, we are all sleep-walking into a pension crisis, whether we want to admit it or not.

        • Anonymous says:

Doesn’t matter how much you have in pension funds. Pension laws only allow 12k a year max

        • Anonymous says:

$27,000 per year is better than $0 per year…

        • Anonymous says:

You are referring simply to the legal requirement for a pension where 10% off a person’s salary is “invested”, 5% by the person and 5% by the employer. There is nothing preventing a person from putting more aside or investing more in their future.

      • Anonymous says:

Take it and move somewhere else, where electricity doesn’t cost $6,000.00 per year.

    • Anonymous says:

CIG acts like taking money out will cause the system to collapse. In reality its a way to prop up half a dozen pension providers that charge at least 1.5% more in fees than comparable ETF. Assuming 50k salary per annum for 30 years that would cost an extra 200k by retirement. Just another way the government transfers money from working class Caymanians to people with political connections. Yes people should save for retirement, but they should have the right to find a better deal.

      Wrong thread dude

Every other country isn’t getting them and those few that are it’s just a loan to be paid pack in taxes very soon…

    • Anonymous says:

You get a 100% return guaranteed on your pension as your employer matches your contributions. So your claim of getting no returns is false… The money is for retirement, not because of temporary problems. I won’t touch any more of my pension even if they allow me to.

    • Anonymous says:

QQQ had a 41% return last year. Compare that to your pension plan performance!
Fat cat pension fund managers likely have a condo at the Ritz and make millions a year off the MER of those pension. Total con job! They are as useless a hiring a travel agent to book your flight and charging you an insane fee … relative to you simply booking yourself online.
No stimulus cheques by Government then another pension withdrawal is justified
