(CNS): The couple jailed last month after breaching COVID-19 isolation regulations will be released, as scheduled, on 15 January. Government officials confirmed Thursday that both Skylar Mack (18), a visitor from the state of Georgia, and Vanjae “VJ” Ramgeet, a local Jet Ski competitor, will leave prison in just over one week, having served half of their sentences. This is the usual procedure for people jailed for less than twelve months.

The governor’s office made the unusual move of issuing a statement about their release due to the significant media hype, both here and in the United States, as well as public concerns about the potential inequity of justice surrounding the issue of quarantine breaches.

“Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service has confirmed that applications for pre-discharge leave, under the terms of section 30 (2) of Prisons Law, were received on behalf of Skylar Mack and Vanjae Ramgeet. The applications were considered by the Office of the Director of Prisons and approved subject to compliance with specific licence conditions,” the governor’s office stated. “Both will be released from prison on 15 January and Miss Mack will depart Cayman that same day. At that time both will have completed their sentence in accordance with Cayman Law. Neither have received any special dispensation.”

However, the authorities have still not addressed the status of at least four cases of quarantine breaches that are said to be under investigation by the police, including the two breaches by a teenage boy who allegedly climbed out of his bedroom window while in home isolation using bed-sheets.

I feel ashamed for her is too young, and hope everything goes smoothly for her. I thought that his boyfriend planned everything and she loves him ,maybe her first love 💗
So my best wishes for her and hope her boyfriend become more responsible person.

1:53 pm, what’s wrong with you. In Cayman, We have Caymankind. She did her time, I am sure she learned her lesson. I wish her well and hope she comes back in the future to enjoy these Islands. Signed a Bracker

Will be interesting to see how soon Ramgeet will blend back in again as if nothing happened! Not too much vitriol towards him.

    • Anonymous says:

He did his time. That was his punishment. Now leave him alone. She did her time. Now leave her alone. Thats how our justice system works. You guys have a nasty way of thinking you should punish by shunning people. I think thats horrible.

  6. Anonymous says:

McKeeva certainly learned his lesson, that’s for sure

  7. Anonymous says:

Fair enough. Hope she returns home and does something positive volunteer work.

  8. Anonymous says:

I’m in support of the punishment levied. However, I believe we as a community, should not be so unforgiving. Yes, she broke the law and put others in danger and paid her dues. Yes, she is a University student and an adult. Nevertheless she is 18 years old, and like most teens, are immature and don’t have a sense of responsibility or care.

I am certain, many commenting here (me included) did some silly/stupid/ dangerous things in our teens that we would not do today. Let’s not be hippo critical and so rude, but hope that she has learned a valuable lesson that will help her develop her sense of awareness and respect for others. Signed..a Caymanian!

True but as a dumbass teenager I never got myself into the situation of potentially causing an outbreak in a foriegn country.

    • Anonymous says:

No, I didn’t put an entire Island in danger to watch my boyfriend play with a jet ski

      • Anonymous says:

Show some respect: he’s a pro jet skier, Olympic standard!

Noisy, dangerous toys ridden by overconfident kids (sorry, athletes) with overindulgent parents, overdeveloped muscles and underdeveloped frontal lobes. The sooner they ban the wretched machines the better. But of course that’ll happen only after numerous fatalities and/or maimings. Just like the “party boats” (deafening Indonesian ferries) and Stingray City deathtraps.

    • Anonymous says:

And that’s the problem. She may be 18, but she is legally an adult in both Cayman and USA, where she’s from. As far as I am concerned, she and VJ should have received the $10,000 fine and the full 2 year prison sentence. Plus, those families who were sent into quarantine for their unbelievably selfish actions should sue either Skylar or VJ or BOTH.

    • Anonymous says:

I think most agreed that the punishment that was administered by thee courts should stand. But I also agree we need to leave it at that. You cannot keep punishing persons over and over. Thats not right.

    • Anonymous says:

      Hippo critical. Brilliant.

    • Caymanian too says:

Since you don’t want us to be “hippo critical”, as a future doctor Skylar should take the Hippocratic oath seriously from now, which is ” first do no harm”.

Just because we are young and do stupid things doesn’t mean they are not consequences to our actions.
It is a part of life. Live and learn.

She is no different than those young people who experimented with weed as teenagers, got a conviction and it affected their ability to get visas to travel to the US, even for school.

I’ve never seen more ignorant comments..have to be Caymanians. I am so ashamed..A Caymanian

    • Anonymous says:

She broke the law. She served her time, it’s over now, so let’s get on with life. I wish the young lady all the best and wish all her dreams come true and hope she returns to these beautiful islands and enjoy them one day not too far in the future. Bracker

    • Anonymous says:

6:36 you are clearly a foreigner. Shut up.

  10. Anonymous says:

So why are all the vitriolic harsh negative comments about her and none about him. Last time I checked pretty sure he was just as culpable.

Ship her home then VJ can do all the community service time.

    • Anonymous says:

Id’ say it is because of the sh!t stirring her grandma did in the US. Not telling the full story and downplaying the entire situation without regard to what we have achieved on this island and what she risked to an entire population.

There have been people that initially test negative and 1-2 weeks later suffer symptoms and then test positive.
You NEVER know!! So we’ll see what happens with the new opening initiative… Be ready to put the masks back on!

    • Anonymous says:

How if the hell can anyone thumbs down this post. Fing hypocrisy.

    • Anonymous says:

Because he and his family had enough sense to accept their punishment and keep their mouths SHUT!!

  11. Anonymous says:

    Meanwhile…

Trump fans are quiet today. Not a peep.

    • 345 says:

You have your own Trump in Mckeeva, but I can’t say when I ever heard of Trump brutalizing a woman on camera!

      • Anonymous says:

First, I think I can speak for all Caymanians in condemning and despising any unacceptable or criminal conduct coming from any elected official, much less a Speaker of the House and a former Premier. Don’t pretend we all are not embarrassed by his actions.

Second, please stay in your lane, sir or madam. We are still awaiting an election on 26 May 2021. Let this be the referendum on his behavior. We can talk after that.

Third, you can have your own Trump vs. Mckeeva comparisons, but I can’t say when I ever heard of McKeeva inciting an insurrection or domestic terrorism out of spite that was seen around the world!!!

At least Mckeeva has the sense not to blantantly attack democracy if he loses and knows where his bread is buttered.

Grab em by the pussy tape?

      • Anonymous says:

But he admitted on US media by video boasting how he “ just grabs them by their ?v$$¥ etc”

    • Anonymous says:

Not much difference between the minority low life Trump fans and the few low life Caymanians. Ignorant, nasty, spiteful. You see, people have and always be the same, despite country.

  12. Anonymous says:

Good Bye Skylar… I wish for you all the best, but never forget
the lesson you learned while visiting the Islands-

Always abide by the law of the land you are visiting-

Isn’t that when most people would stray out of isolation?

Goodbye and good riddance! Don’t come back! You aren’t welcome here. We don’t want people who refuse to abide by our laws. This isn’t the USA. And for that, we are very thankful.

  17. Anonymous says:

Why are you wasting time with this issue. Good for Cayman not to buckle under pressure.
If you need important news/issues to address look not further than the news above this one. “80% of local kids in under-performing schools”. Now that is an important matter.

    • Anonymous says:

You should be more concerned about what happened on capitol hill yesterday than a few skewed statistics concerning underperforming kids in our schools.

  18. BeaumontZodecloun says:

Good. We stuck to our guns, and now incoming folk have a better understanding of the government’s newly found dedication to prosecuting those who breach quarantine.

  19. Anonymous says:

“Neither have received any special dispensation” versus, guidance of $10,000 fine AND jail for 2 years (ie. not one month).

    • Anonymous says:

That’s not guidance, it’s the maximum possible sentence.

      • Anonymous says:

It’s literally the prescribed penalty under the law. Our judges use too much personal discretion, which is why the public are aghast when sentencing winds up being all over the place.

  20. Anonymous says:

Good riddance and may she NEVER return!

    • Anonymous says:

And may no US tourist ever return.

      • Anonymous says:

Speak for yourself. I hope all U.S. tourist return!!!

        • Anonymous says:

Or maybe just those with meaningful discretionary budget to buy products and services sold in the Cayman Islands. That would be a nice baseline criteria.

          • Anonymous says:

Might as well roll that criterion out to anybody wishing to visit or reside in the cayman islands. Had we did that 30 years ago and enforced it, the islands would be a much better place today.

      • Anonymous says:

3:06 pm. No US tourists to return? Really?

        • Anonymous says:

Agreed, they are the lowest of the low. I mean just look at what took place at the Capitol…smh. Laughing stock of the world. The US is so quick to call other countries “shitholes” but they need look no further than their own nose.

      • Anonymous says:

3:06pm As a multi-generational Caymanian, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with your insanely stupid remark. You are obviously completely ignorant to the workings of Cayman’s economy or economies in general.

  21. Kiss me neck says:

Pick up ya bundle and leave and go don’t stay here no more. Hope y’all learned to obey the law is not a crime.

  22. Anonymous says:

I hope she escorted directly to the plane and never allowed back.
