Smiles and handshakes for guilty speaker

Minister Tara Rivers and Speaker McKeeva Bush at the name changing ceremony

(CNS): Government leaders were all smiles and handshakes as they were greeted by House Speaker McKeeva Bush on Friday at the official naming of Parliament, just 24 hours after he appeared in court and admitted assaulting a female bar manager in a drunken frenzy earlier this year. Bush was in full ceremonial garb as he presided over the historic proceedings.

The governor, chief justice and premier were all formally greeted by Bush as they arrived at the renamed political house. Bush even formally greeted the police guard before entering the chamber.

Recalling his 35-year history in the Legislative Assembly and what he said were his own achievements, the speaker attacked people for complaining on social media and the radio and took aim at those who might poke fun of the occasion.

Bush said he was “ringing this warning bell” about those leading the charge against everything and that it was not beneficial “that they are prepared to behave irresponsibly to get their way”. The long-standing member for West Bay said the people who were at times tearing down the church and undermining government at every level had done nothing “but talk with nice flowery language”.

He said people were urging others to demonstrate about everything, “and maybe demonstrate against the speaker too”.

Bush made no mention of why people might want to protest against him retaining his high office, given his admission of violence and public intoxication.

The speaker went on to commend the current coalition government and said people should be grateful for the Cayman Islands, given the situation here compared to other countries.

The speaker’s address was followed by Governor Martyn Roper’s throne speech for the state opening of Parliament and Premier Alden McLaughlin’s address.

Bush then went on to hand out commemorative symbolic keys made from Caymanite to each member of Parliament, with the exception of Roy McTaggart and Juliana O’Connor-Connolly who were not present for the celebrations, shook hands and smiled for the photo opportunity.

With the exception of Ezzard Miller, no members of Parliament, including the three female members, have responded to requests from CNS for comment on Bush’s guilty pleas last week, the admissions about his drunken behaviour and the expletive laden message he had sent about his victim.

He wasn’t sentenced yet. If he escapes prison time, and I believe this is simply impossible in any civilized society, then every visitors must boycott The Cayman Islands, the place where women assaulted regularly and customarily while perpetrators simply forgiven. He is a chauvinistic pig, as well as those who shake hands with him.

Unfortunately, it is the people who have been schooled by the failing education system on this island who are the ones to blame.

After all, it is those people who continue to vote into office individuals we now call members of Parliament. Elections are coming up in the new year. It is time for complete housekeeping. If the current Parliament is allowed to continue, Cayman will end up just like the USA which is governed by an ever more obvious band of thieves and self-serving insiders.

Too bad the Queen does not follow the antics of these dirty politicians and can the whole bunch!

Only ones to blame are those that keep silent… Don’t take education to make you conscious of right and wrong unless you want to keep ignorant

Let us show our condemnation of the useless coward MLAs who suck up to McKeeva.

We should all meet up on Friday at the LA Building to show our disgust with the MLAs.

Every MLA who sucked up to McKeeva should be VOTED OUT.

Sickening exhibit with all the govt cowing to the speaker when the new parliament was launched. Spineless ignorant people – would they all be so weak if it was their relative who was beaten up – no, of course not. PPM s just dont want to lose their majority so are doing anything. Where are the morals of these people?

    • Anonymous says:

No morals and they cover up their relatives abuse too… in favour of the abuser, especially the mothers of their sons!

This matter is being tried in Court. His punishment will be administered by the Court. Is this article and persons writing here requiring all who attended Parliament to become sanctimonious and increase his punishment by shunning him and not even shaking McKeevas hand? I think that’s disgraceful!! I don’t agree with most of what Mac does but it wouldn’t occur to me to shun him and make him feel like garbage. He must be guided by his own conscience, judged by the Courts, punished by the Courts and reconcile with his God. Please don’t call for the public to turn on him like a pack of dogs. That’s also as disgraceful as what he’s been accused of!!

    • anon says:

7.46am Mr Sanctimonious – it’s disgraceful what he has pleaded guilty to, not just what he is trying to wriggle out of. We all know he has no conscience so if we don’t shun him in public, he will carry on as usual.

      • Anonymous says:

10.12am Why don’t you show us all that you do or have done in private so that we can shun you. I guarantee that your life is not without blemish. Remember these words ” Let he that is without sin cast the first stone” then put down your stone (or maybe delete your comment).

You understand what public service is right? Codes of ethics for elected officials etc.?

          • Anonymous says:

No one is saying that the Speaker has acted properly. As far as I know there are no Codes of ethics that addresses this which needs to be sorted. There needs to be a proper procedure to remove an MP for bad behavior. If MAC gets convicted for the more serious charge and its recorded he will have to vacate is seat under the constitution and a very long career will end in disgrace and that will also be further punishment. But asking me to shun him or anyone else is wrong!! It’s just wrong and please dont encourage this sort of behavior.

        • Anonymous says:

McKeeva Bush is a thug, a bully and a criminal. He needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law so that all of our daughters in Cayman are able to go and work in a safe environment without fear of assault.

For too long he has relied on foolish people like you quoting some rubbish from the bible, while he carries on behaving like a beast. Shunning him is a peaceful way for all of us in society to make clear to him that his behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

        • Anonymous says:

          Garbage

    • Anonymous says:

First, it’s not being tried in court. It’s over. He admitted it. The only thing left is for sentencing. And as for shunning him, well some public display of remorse and compensation for the victim is surely a necessary step before deciding that the matter can be left to his own conscience and the judicial system. One can and should forgive the repentant sinner – the unrepentant one, not so much.

      • Anonymous says:

This is simply not true To say this matter is no longer being tried in court. To simply try to mislead by saying that there is so much evidence that it doesn’t matter that this is still on going in court, sentencing hasn’t been passed and therefore the public should punish Mac instead of the courts is reprehensible. And who are YOU that YOU feel YOU are qualified to forgive a repentant or unrepentant sinner?? Now that is truly repugnant. God help us all

    • Anonymous says:

I don’t know what rock you’ve been hiding under, but the Honorable Speaker has already plead “guilty as charged” to three of four morally reprehensible charges, while serving as a House Speaker and MLA. The last one, a very serious permanently-disqualifying criminal count, supported by CCTV evidence, and eyewitnesses, including firsthand victim testimony, remains to be heard. I think everybody knows how this ends…everyone perhaps, but you, and McKeeva Bush.

The Governor is ultimately the adjudicator of good governance for the Queen, with support of the FCO. That is why we pay to them to oversee us. If there is a governance mistake underway, deliberate or not, at the hand of the formed or elected Government of the the Cayman Islands, he or she is obliged by the Queen and with the support of the FCO, to point that out, encourage change, and/or intervene through Orders in Counsel if through stupidity or obstinance, there’s finally no other option. It’s not really the Premier’s or Speaker’s call at that point. They don’t have to agree or even like it, but they must accept it as a Territorial administration, or risk an unscheduled beach landing exercise by the Morant Bay. That’s the deal.

Is it a coincidence that straight after McKeeva came into power in 2009, Michael Ryan stopped making payments for the outstanding duty on the Ritz? When Ryan’s companies were sold at auction he still owed the Cayman Islands $6 million. Ryan acknowledged the debt and was willing to exchange it for land for his Safehaven project. @Anonymous 12.11pm

Respectfully, I think it unfair to judge an entire country or people based the actions and poor judgement demonstrated by a select few and its political leaders. It is short sighted if that sort of logic was to be applied to all scenarios or countries including USA, Canada, UK, South Africa, Ireland, India, neighboring Caribbean countries and many others etc.

Instead of general bombastic sweeping statements, it is only fair to acknowledge that there are good and bad people and leaders in all countries. It is not fair to assume we are all the same, as it unfair for locals to assume that all expats are “bad” and disrespectful to the culture, heritage and people they found in Cayman as they made the decision to leave their home country. Let’s try to focus on the things that make us all want stay here and work together to build a better Cayman for all…this OUR home.

I accept there are some embarrassing events, growing frustrations amongst many that believe in the principles of accountability, transparency, good governance and participatory democracy. The mind boggling decisions that persons in leadership wish to ignore or sweep under the rug are shocking. However, there are many Caymanians that know better, work hard to survive and earn their way and do better based on their values and decisions.

            @ Anonymous 6.12pm

I understand the point you’ve made.
I cannot speak to why others do or do not engage in forms of activism or are afraid to speak their minds on national issues. One reason maybe is that our democracy is still immature and evolving. The current generation are far more energetic and liberal minded than the current leadership and those in power and persons that hold significant influence on policy makers. I’m sure this generation and the diversity of the “New Cayman” will drive the changes and expectations we have of our leaders in due course.

However, I respect it is ultimately an individual’s prerogative whether they fully engage or sit on the sidelines and blog anonymously etc.

Sadly, political victimization in Cayman is real and is best described as professional suicide due to the dire consequences for many Caymanians who “speak out of turn” or question the status quo. I also believe that people will find their courage or voice on their own time. What issue sparks that emotion to stand up and speak out is unique to each individual.

Like you, I hope more Caymanians find the courage to speak their minds, publicly engage in important national issues that shape and hold our leadership accountable and demand transparency on all matters. If we fail to do so ultimately we will all pay for the poor decisions and expensive monuments to egos of the false prophets in leadership positions both elected and non-elected.

Please allow me to suggest that you lead the charge by dropping the mask of anonymity. Feel free to call me if you wish to engage further on 9260984.

I am an expat who quietly stands beside you.

While some Caymanians welcome my words, many do not.

Perhaps, democracy may still be young in Cayman……. perhaps.

Yet, the concept of democracy is not.

Many of your country people go off island and are educated in democratic countries.

Main stream media that lands in Cayman mostly comes from democratic countries.

Lots of expats come in to Cayman to work from other democratic countries.

              Tourist visits from democratic countries.

People learn what they see. People learn when they are welcomed to participate. People learn when they are spoken to respectfully.

I’m afraid I can’t help in this particular situation.

What I can say is, dictatorship is a dirty word in most parts of the world.

Looking in, your islands are currently demonstrating the tenets of a dictatorship, which is absolute power by a small few. I don’t have convince you, I know this 🙂

When your government is shutting down media. When your government won’t go a on a radio show. When your government is selling out your country to vulture capitalists. When your government condones the horrific actions of MORE than one person who sits elected in your House of Parliament… well, Caymanians must reflect on what is really being allowed and, more, what is happening behind closed doors that does not get reported.

I know you know more than even I know. I know you can see the absolute disintegration of Cayman on levels most people can’t even comprehend.

I’ll be here, pounding away on my keyboard. I know I look like a keyboard warrior but I also believe that maybe I may plant a seed for someone else who is reading.

Standing beside you and all Caymanians for the best future you all could ever imagine – it is possible!!

You are all so quick to condem gays though.

Tell me, which “sin” is worse?

He did call her a lesbian, so the Minister’s Association cannot go against him. Somewhere in the bible it states that lesbians should be beat with any item that you find in the kitchen.

Just to clarify here, her sexual preference are immaterial to the topic at hand. If a man, who is always head of the household, says something about a woman (who must always be subservient) then the punishment can immediately be inflicted.

    • Al Catraz says:

Getting drunk and beating a woman is not a problem with the Cayman Ministers Association. C’mon. You know why.

  42. Kaye says:

How totally and utterly disgusting. Every single politician in Cayman should stand down for supporting this vile creature (Ezzard Miller aside). It’s an affront to everyone that these pictures were actually allowed to be taken.

Ezzard shook his hand and accepted the gift as well

      • Kaye says:

Did he? I missed that part, so he’s just another sound bite loving, abuse enabler. In that case all of them should resign! Why are people not more outraged that these animals are parading around with their little smug faces making hundreds of thousands of dollars are year? The silence regarding it is beyond crazy!

    Is he a sociopath?

  44. Anonymous says:

Good on Mr. Speaker for addressing the problems of Cayman society.

  45. Anonymous says:

And so? I do not see any voters calling for his resignation. MPs are the voice of the people so are people going to remain quiet? You need not shout to be heard; a silent protest with placards across from the Parliament would do, but do we have enough people the balls to do it? Where are the Katinas? Where the Ministers’ Association? Where the groups against abuse? Not a peep.

Great picture of two frauds! West Bay has to get rid of their clowns.

I’m super excited to be voting in one of their constituencies this time around. Hopefully, my vote will count to vote at least one of the frauds out.

Time to vote Tara out in 2021
Time to vote Juliana out in 2021
Time to vote Barbara out in 2021

They support McKeeva Bush and do not represent female voters in their districts.

No masks, no social distancing? Great example to the rest of us?

    • Anonymous says:

No longer required here. Get over it .

    • Good anon says:

Er…. Cayman is COVID free except for incoming travellers who have to undergo a mandatory 14 day quarantine – no shortcuts! Only people wearing masks are those who still choose to do so! No distancing required! Get your facts straight before you comment.

      • Anonymous says:

Yeah right! COVID-free until people step so far back from sensible precautions we end up like the USA?

  49. Res Ipsa Loquitur says:

As women Tara Rivers Juliana O’Connor-Connolly and Barbara Connolly showed us all they have no shame no standards and are not champions against violence especially the female victims. They do not deserve to represent any woman on this island. SHAME SHAME SHAME.
They all need to go along with all the other cowards who have nothing to say in the LA.
Where are the religious groups like Ministers Association and all the others who fight for morality and doing the right things in this Christian country? Is violence against women acceptable to the members of the LA? This is a national disgrace.
