Six more travellers COVID-19 positive

| 16/12/2020 | 44 Comments

(CNS): Another six people have tested positive for COVID-19 from a batch of 394 tests carried out over the last day, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee has said. None of this latest group carrying the virus are symptomatic and they are all travellers currently in isolation. There are now 25 active cases of the virus in the Cayman Islands and five of those individuals are said to be suffering symptoms.

To date Cayman has now recorded 308 cases of the virus since testing began, and the vast majority of them have been travellers to the island. More than twenty cases have been recorded among travellers since the start of December. The number of people currently in isolation in either a government facility or in their homes is 1,438.

this is what could/is happening:…caymanian in the uk tests postive…and then flys back to cayman….??????
so cig are letting covid positive people fly to cayman without taking the obvious step of testing people prior to depatrure????

  3. McCarron McLaughlin says:

I hope the laboratory is here are running 35 or less cycles when completing the Covid-19 test, more than 35 cycles means its a 97% false positive. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, Dr. Fauci said in the early days of the pandemic. Do the reasearch people!

    • Anonymous says:

It’s about time someone said it. I think I heard at one time early on that they were runnin cycles at 47. The US is runnin at high cycles as well. It’s all about keeping the cases goin for fear mongering and so far it’s working. 2 homeowners on the Brac had covid in October and tested positive so back to quarantine they went! Totally ridiculous and it’s time HSA was held responsible for all of this.

Never let a good crisis go to waste!

Pretesting before allowing on the plane is not 100 % proof. But It surely will help

Would anyone care to comment on how many kids and folks in the community have had the ‘flu’ in the last 2 weeks.

And, where it came from and how many of those who had it went for a Covid Test?

    I’m betting, no one got a test…

    • Anonymous says:

I gather the normal flu-afflicted (a lot of school kids and families) are testing negative for COVID, but it raises an ominous question about how it got here and loose in our community given the strict travel protocols that are supposed to be working. Did it arrive on packaging? On migrating birds? Maybe CMO Dr Lee can explain this pathogenic phenomenon to us? Should we all be limiting gatherings and wearing face masks again?

    • Anonymous says:

It came from those “travelers” who are home isolating and in the dark of night mixing with the “community” who are then going home and off to work. It came from those who are going on “essential Miami shopping” trips and returning home. It came from the businessman who had to travel for work. It came from all those asymptomatic people walking the island whom never were tested.

It’s not flu – it’s a cold that people have. Two very different ailments. Too many people here always calling a bad cold, flu. Yes, you feel awful – but flu? You really feel bad – too ill to get out of bed. I had it once 40 years ago – and I still remember how ill I felt.

It is quite likely that a significant percentage of those who test negative on arrival but positive 14 days later were infected while on the flight to Cayman, particularly the long flight from the UK. The government owes a duty of care to people allowed onto flights. Why are we not requiring day of departure testing that would minimise the number getting infected on the flights to Cayman????

    • Anonymous says:

If the plane is the risk, then masks do NOT work. More likely is what those few did the last night out before flying.

      • Anonymous says:

No one said masks are 100% effective at preventing transmission. In addition to airborne spread the virus can also be spread on surfaces particularly on plane washrooms and seat backs that people touch when walking up and down in the plane on that 14 hour flight from the UK.

  10. Anonymous says:

The risk to all of us could be greatly reduced by day of departure airport testing. That would detect approximately 90% of people infected before they get on the flight and potentially infect others. Not sure why government is not requiring that?
Perhaps at least when the UK flights resume in January that could be in place as passengers departing Heathrow for Cayman have to walk past the testing centre on the way to the gate!

  11. T-cells rock! says:

If I was in charge, I would randomly test large group of Caymanians of all ages for pre-existing immunity. I bet business community could probably contribute to the cost of testing.

And it is NOT about antibodies, but T-cells.

Cayman could greatly contribute to science that is still trying to understanding COVID.

Large group of people nearly COVID free, isolated on a small rock, represents great opportunity for testing several things:
      – are people COVID free because of quarantines and closed borders or
      – may be immune system of people living under Caribbean sun is so robust that it fights off covid easily without even causing symptoms
      – may be people in Cayman have pre-existing immunity?
      – in January-February, up to 200 flu cases was reported per week. May be people had COVID, not Flu, since thousands visitors were roaming freely.

Nobody knows answers to these questions, just assumptions that quarantine and closed borders work.

      What Dr.Lee thinks about it?

      • Anonymous says:

We all know the answers to some of these questions, including Dr. Lee:

Few people in Cayman had pre-existing immunity. There were antibody tests done on a random sample of people several months ago and it was a small percentage.

The “robust” sun doesn’t protect against covid, but people are outside more in warm climates and congregate less in large groups indoors with poor ventilation and viruses apparently do better in low humidity. But plenty of places with warm climates such as Florida still have plenty of transmission

        – Yes people are covid free because of quarantines and closed borders.

        – Yes, a few of the people in Jan and Feb might have had covid and not flu.

        There you go.

I would think it is because living in Cayman you are not all jammed together in cities and not riding transportation to work where 1,000’s of people are riding in enclosed areas. You are also not in enclosed areas with 1,000’s of people working in old buildings with insufficient heating systems.

    • Anonymous says:

If it is not about antibodies and T-cells which part of our immune system are you referring to?????

CNS – Why is the government silent on the adult (19 IS and adult) who breached quarantine twice? There are rumors he is positive and was at the gym, clubs and other locations. Is there any truth to this? Has contact tracing been conducted so those he was in contact with can isolate? We are a small island and this can spread really quickly.

This is insane, letting too many with the c-virus cone, why in h… they are not tested hours before allowing them to board the plane to Cayman, crazy, crazy .

“the only thing we are getting by December is covid”

  21. anon says:

Just a thought, we must have had a lot of Caymanian students returning from the UK this month for their Christmas holidays. The more than 20 cases in December may not all be expats. As many informed contributors to these columns have commented pre-testing is by no means a guarantee of freedom from infection at the time of departure. As far as I am concerned the price we have paid for all these return flights is acceptable so long as we maintain strict quarantine.

Hope unna ready to wear masks again. I’m getting the vaccine

  23. Cayman’s COVID Guinea Pig Colony says:

Why we keep purposely importing sickness is insanity. For starters, expats have to undergo strict medical evaluation before coming here on a work permit. Why on earth can’t this same strategy be applied to travellers in the form of PCR testing 14 days prior to flying in and again before they fly? Many people have asked the same sort thing here on CNS in previous posts.

Maybe the powers that be are trying to turn Cayman into a travellers COVID colony, like a leper colony of some sort?

CNS, what is the HSA’s basis for allowing this insane strategy?

  24. Anonymous says:

    Why no pretesting?
The government is deliberately putting people at risk while they are on the flight with people that test positive on arrival.
If they pretest this could help cut back the risk for others on the flight. It would also help cut back the risk for the flight crew who are not isolating on return and could then spread it.
