Protesters to call for MPs to oust speaker

Linda Clark outside Parliament

(CNS): Protesters will gather outside the House of Parliament on Friday to demonstrate public outrage over the behaviour of Speaker McKeeva Bush and his failure to resign after admitting a violent assault on a female beach-bar manager. They will also be showing how they feel about MPs who have not held him to account. One of the activists organising the event said it was a peaceful demonstration against violence and MPs’ lack of accountability to the people once they are elected.

“We do not demonstrate because we want to,” Taura Ebanks told CNS. “We gather because we know the checks and balances are not in place to serve the people’s interests.” She added that those involved in organising the event respect the courts, and hope the law will address the admissions made by Bush and the violence that was captured on CCTV footage.

Explaining the goal of the demonstration, she said, “We want to encourage MPs to truly examine their responsibilities and the silence that makes most of them complicit in the actions of one. We hope those current MPs remember their responsibility to serve and represent the Cayman Islands with behaviour that reflects who we are and what kind of leaders we deserve.”

Last Friday, as Bush presided over the historic ceremony that formally renamed the legislature as a House of Parliament, he had taken aim at critics of government and what he said was a desire by some people to demonstrate over anything, including himself. But he made no apology for his actions or any reference as to why people might feel the need to call him out.

Ebanks said this made a mockery of the people. “It’s sad day when we have leaders who ‘black out’, commit violent acts against members in our community, yet still jokingly mock and make remarks about people who protest, as if our voices do not matter, as if we are the ones doing something wrong,” she added.

With the exception of Ezzard Miller MP, who has consistently spoken out against Bush retaining his job in light of the assault charges, no other MPs have raised the issue since his arrest.

Miller was the target of attacks by the speaker this week, ostensibly over his position as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, thought it came hours after the independent MP had again expressed his outrage that Bush had not resigned, even after the guilty pleas.

Although Opposition Leader Arden McLean moved a motion of no confidence in the speaker following his arrest and Bernie Bush MP resigned as deputy speaker on principle after McKeeva Bush took a leave of absence, they, too, have been silent since the speaker openly returned to his prestigious post.

Bush has made it clear he will not step down of his own accord and has previously said he does not believe his colleagues want to remove him.

Ebanks said it was this lack of accountability as well as the issue of Bush’s violent behaviour that was driving the protesters to the streets. “When there is no constitutional law in place that provides the people with the opportunity to remove a sitting MP, minister or speaker of the House because of actions that shame our islands, there is something wrong,” she said. “The power should always be in the hands of the people as it relates to those we elect to represent us.”

Linda Clark, a well-known environmental activist, has already taken to the steps of Parliament for a lone protest this week but she will be joined by many more on Friday. All who wish to support the demonstration, which has police approval, are welcome. The event is set for 1:00pm outside the parliament building in George Town.

People joining in are asked to wear orange and walk, carpool or use the shuttle service to get to the protest to avoid traffic and parking trouble.

Why is the Premier silent on this issue. A few weeks back he was so vocal reminding us about rule of law. That is all you could hear out of him. Not sure if he even understood what is meant by rule of law.

Here is an idea. A lot of coverage could be obtained by sending this story to one of the UK Tabloids! Someone might even be able to send video of the incident. As the subject is no longer sub-juice there should be no restrictions on doing this. And I’m sure some pressure on our so called government (here in Cayman) might result, who knows?

Violence against women in the Cayman Islands. There’s too much acceptance. We say we don’t accept it, but so many cases go unreported. So many cases get minimized. So many cases get, ‘Well, it happened, we move on.’ But we need to — as individuals, as communities, as the country — to say, ‘No, this is not an acceptable human behavior.

Nichelle Anna-Kay Thomas would be still alive if police did its job.

It is a miracle that Livia Kwong is alive. Extremely intoxicated, heavy set Bush could have easily killed her when he was “slamming the woman against the surfaces.. [had] his arm around Kwong’s neck and throws her from surface to surface.” This is not an acceptable human behavior.

  11. Anonymous says:

Hon. Governor, as a long time UK expat on this island, I implore you to take whatever steps necessary to remove McKeeva Bush from his current position as speaker and to prevent his return to politics at any time in the future. His continued presence as speaker brings the parliamentary system on Cayman into disrepute and brings considerable embarrassment to the FCO.

Had this been a UK politician, they would have resigned in shame or been sacked from their position. Surely as a BOT we can’t condone this behaviour from someone who is representing the UK albeit in a slightly different context? If his departure is not forthcoming then the UK is effectively rubber stamping violence against women as acceptable.

Do the right thing and ensure that ALL the women of Cayman can have confidence that the UK is more than just the ‘mother country’ and actually cares about people who live on it’s islands.

Food for thought: if it had been someone on a work permit that attacked a Caymanian female, all the MPs would be demanding the man’s head on a platter. Arden would have been hollering, “We must deport him, Mr. Speaker!” But that is not the case, so mum’s the word. Please think of that, and come out on Friday.

    • Anonymous says:

      Not really.

Nichelle Anna-Kay Thomas (21) had suffered considerable violence at the hands of her boyfriend Devon Roy Campbell and the police had been called to their apartment on numerous occasions after Campbell had assaulted her, including on one occasion with a screwdriver. Neighbours had also sheltered and helped her when she was being attacked.

Cayman Police CHOSE not to take any actions on numerous occasions which could have prevented her murder. They were going to investigate how this could have happened, and appears still “investigating”, 9 years later.

Devon Roy Campbell was never charged or prosecuted (before he hanged himself).

This again demonstrates that in the Cayman Islands even Police condones male chauvinism. As if the life of a 21 years old woman doesn’t really matter.

  15. Taura Ebanks says:

Thanks for everyone’s comments. The Demonstration welcomes everyone and relies heavily on people in the community to share the details with their contacts.

We appreciate not everyone can join for 2 hours from 1pm – 3pm, however ALL are welcome to come for any period of time, their schedule will allow.

Consider a light lunch you can carry or have a quick bite from a nearby, local restaurant.

There were reasons for the date and time I’ll be happy to share details on Cayman Crosstalk tomorrow 7:30am

We appreciate a single protest will not change things, but it is one small step towards bringing people together and using our voices. There is more to action to follow, but this is the beginning and as we can all appreciate, it’s only when we work together that we learn and can change things.

I would encourage everyone to write/email/call/contact their elected representatives (MP) and let them know how you feel, your thoughts and how you would like them to represent you with their voices as MPs.

For those able to attend, we suggest carpooling, use the FREE George Town shuttle, use Flex/Taxi or if you work/live near the House of Parliament, consider a quick walk.

Information was requested with a form at https://forms.gle/N7nguvpeXg5Uangw7 so that we could communicate information for those who want to attend. It’s not mandatory, it’s a request. The information is kept private and will not be shared with the public/will not be sold and will not be used to communicate any subject (Other than the demonstration and connected events)

I truly appreciate that the timing may not work for everyone and for those who want to support this issue, there are ways to engage.

In case your private sector privilege and six-figure salary is blinding you, when you work as a civil servant, the first thing you sign a legally binding code of conduct that prohibits any participation in any public protest or public promotion of a political candidate (remain neutral), as a government employee.

If you are caught by any means in violation, you are charged in Grand Court for treason of state with extensive jail time, in addition to dismissal of post.

You understand the corruption dilemma? Most that see it are held by contract (and sink-or-swim salary) from publicly speaking out against it. (Protest that)

United Kindgom legislature is the only international law that holds water in the Cayman Islands beside local ordinances. (not United States law or any amount of attorney spinning)

Just a suggestion: Perhaps you could draft a letter that people could use, to write to their MPs. This would be especially helpful for people who can’t attend the protest. Status for you is a means to an end to get what you what out of this country, not to be a Caymanian and not to put anything back into it.

There is a division amongst Caymanians but it is exacerbated by people like you that use STATUS for your financial gain only.

I know a lot of people don’t like UK “interference” but our elected government (side note – didn’t vote for any of these clowns) won’t do anything about McKeeva’s behavior. Protests are good and all but they rarely end in any change being brought about here. Wouldnt starting a petition be better? I’d sign it and I’m a civil servant. This goes beyond political neutrality which we are told we have to abide by if we work for the government. This man is a disgrace and needs to go.

To begin, I am extraordinarily bothered by the time of this event.

It’s not really a situation where you can show up by proxy. This protest is exceptionally important in Cayman right now. I understand that not everyone will always be available but MID WORK DAY? C’mon.

No way civil servants, if they can come, are going to be allowed to come out! It’s a work day where they are being paid to be at work. Hello?

    Engage brain people!!

The google doc form that the organizer wants you to fill out is an invasion of privacy, IMO, and outright bizarre.

Can you not just have a FB group or IG group and go from there?

Do you really need everyone’s details?

Do you understand that there is a REAL and TANGIBLE issue in Cayman where people are afraid to speak out never mind come out?

You want all of their details right off the hop – WHY?

Is it by invite only? Are you vetting the people who want to come out and show their support? It appears so.

Are you giving out participation awards? Why do you need all of this information?

State the time and place and, perhaps, people will show up. Don’t use it as a mission to collect phone numbers, emails, names…. People sell that information on island!!!!

It’s always strange to me that people ask for that information? It’s mandatory on the form! Incredibly bizarre.

    You’re having a protest:

    1. Make it a time when most people are available (mid work day, on a Friday afternoon?).

    2. Make it so that people can just show up. (I don’t want to fill out your form and I sure don’t want to be questioned or given one if I just show up on the day)

    3. Make it inclusive. (Your form with all of the mandatory fields makes me feel unwelcome, if I choose not to fill it out)

Respectfully, the anonymous google doc form that you are requesting people fill out is not conducive but rather intrusive.

If we meet in person and I like you, then I *may* give you my information.

Do better, Ms. Ebanks. Maybe run your ideas past others and see if they agree with the way you are coming across first?

    • Linda Clark says:

Feel free to organise your own event at a time that suits you, no-one is stopping you and I’m sure you would be supported.
Remember to get police permission too.
It takes at least 3 days.
In Cayman we are still under a 500 person gathering limit due to COVID-19, so it’s important to understand the number of people so no laws are broken, and should there be a change in information/time/ split location to adhere to number limits, or people wish to help organise / provide times etc those who choose to provide their information in a form can and get updates as required.
CNS has clearly stated the information here as has CMR, so there is no need to fill out the form if you are not comfortable but it makes it more difficult to ensure the police are notified with the expected numbers to ensure no breach of COVID-19 gathering regulations.

I’m sure most people can take part of their lunch hour to attend for 30 mins.
If an employer does NOT support speaking up against violence, then maybe the employee should consider working for someone else.
Thank you Taura for using your own personal free time to organise and make it open to all to attend, arrange police permission, co-ordinate signs and ensure the peaceful demonstration is done according to the law.

Hope to see you there, please bring a sign and wear orange.

Nice idea, but protests in Cayman have low impact and high-hassle. Some folk could be fired for participating. Low turnout can actually hinder change by suggesting there’s limited matching/shared public sentiment.

Conversely, CPR demonstrated that with a well-circulated voter-led petition, change can be compelled upon those who think they call all the shots. That would be the better way to go.

12:58 Agree that have a petition for his removal (not resignation as he won’t go without being forced) is a great plan!

The information in those 4 columns allows an accurate count of those in protest. Being able to clearly state that xx% of the islands’ voters are in support of the petition carries weight. The protest in person is a good START but something more tangible should go along with it.

In addition, if every voter contacts their MP and let’s them know that they’ve lost their vote over them not removing Mac, it can help. They pretend to be a team but it’s really “every man for himself” and they might throw him out to try to save themselves.

If it’s Friday because that’s when they sit in there, unna should well know Mac would still see the turnout through (social) media. And the coward na going come outside either, so what’s the difference doing it weekend?

    It’s axiomatic that law-breakers can’t be law-makers.

Would someone please point this out to our dishonourable rabble of “MPs”

    “Stop violence against women”

Man or woman, nobody should suffer from violence. That being said I will happily knock a woman TF out if they lay hands on me with a malicious intent. Man or woman everyone deserves equal rights… And lefts.

I think before spelling hate against your government (understandable) you should go and support this lady.
Alone she will catch your attention but she will not change anything.

If I could possibly be there, I would.

Thank you to all those who give up their time to protest against this disgusting individual, his continuing debasement of our public life, and the shameless, spineless, self-interested inadequates who have failed to act as they should and remove him.

I am grateful for those that organized it. I can only spare 1/2 hour due to work commitments but I am going nonetheless because this man’s lights are on but there is nobody home!!! ENOUGH HE HAS TO GO!!!

Remove the Chairman of the Girlfriends & Wifebeaters Association GWA first then you can get rid of the membership! Thanks Victim!

I can’t make it but I hope more and more people show up to protest. Enough is enough.

Just wear a mask, shades and hat.

Uh, unna na working or something? Who organizes a protest for when 95% of people will be at work?

1pm on a weekday? Seriously? Am I supposed to come during my lunch break?

If you do not work for government, please go for us. We’d be fired.

Which really sucks. I’m a female civil servant and would be there in a heartbeat if it wouldn’t risk my job. Enough is enough. Mckeevas behaviour is unacceptable and inexcusable.

You should organise a protest in protest.

12:07 You should be fired. Civil Servants have to be politically neutral.

Does anyone believe that if Mac was a Director of a local company that the company would allow their employees to protest again their own Director?

Please keep civil servants out of this.

Sad that protesting violence is a political issue

2:32pm I can vote and pay Govt fees but can’t express myself? Please take a long walk off a short pier.

2:32 it’s hypocritical that our speaker of the house is supposed to preside over the justice system yet he is the one breaking laws and is the last person on this island who can be called politically neutral. He gives his opinions freely with not a care in the world and assaults women (and this isn’t the first case). Standing up for the rights of women and to stop domestic abuse should be done by everybody. No civil servant should lose their job over this.

      Q. What does your employee code of conduct book say about violence, abuse, or discrimination of any kind in your workplace? How is standing up for the same value standard in someone else’s workplace any different?
