(CNS) UPDATED SUNDAY: Police say that a man has been arrested on suspicion of the killing of 22-year-old Michael Aaron Bush, who was stabbed multiple times during a fight in the Strand Plaza car park on Christmas Eve. In a release early Sunday afternoon, the RCIPS said that at around 8:30 on Saturday evening, 26 December, a 20-year-old man of George Town surrendered to the Cayman Islands Detention Centre in relation to the fatal stabbing. The man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody pending further enquiries as the murder investigation continues.

In an earlier release, police said they believe that at least 20 people were around when the incident took place and Detective Inspector Dave Morrison, who is the senior investigating officer for this murder investigation, is continuing to urge them to come forward to assist the investigation. Police said they will ensure that all calls will be treated with the strictest of confidence

Anyone with pictures or videos of the incident is asked to submit them through the RCIPS website here.

Anyone involved in any way or has information relating to the investigation is encouraged to call the Major Incident Room at 649-2930.

Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or the police website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online.

“I commend the investigating team and all the supporting units who have been assisting with this investigation so far,” said Superintendent Peter Lansdown, who is in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, “The officers have been out in numbers over the holidays to ensure that the investigation progresses as diligently and swiftly as possible. We will continue to do the same as the investigation progresses.”

Michael Bush, who is from West Bay, was pronounced dead by doctors who tried to save his life at around 4:45am at the Cayman Islands Hospital. The family’s tragedy comes just over one year after Bush’s cousin, Shaquille Bush was murdered when he was gunned down in the district in November 2019. Although his father was one of several people police arrested in connection to that killing, no one has ever been charged.

  1. RCIP Farce says:

Not one of the basic principles of policing have been adhered to at this murder scene 1 protection and preservation of life 2 preservation and controlling the of evidence and scene 3 locating potential witnesses and arrest of suspects. There is an assumption that officers present at this scene are local or Caymanian unfortunately there not These are supposed to well trained foreign officers according to the RCIPs after all they are arm to the teeth with the latest weapons and tools our government has so graciously provided. I await the excuses from our local high command as to why this was not done in this instance. This type of unprofessional conduct is now common place here in Cayman and is very similar in other jurisdictions where we keep recruiting many of our law enforcement personnel from. The former police chief was quoted as saying the police service must reflect the diversity of the local population their conduct unfortunately does reflect exactly where they come from too! Cayman we need a desperate change in leadership now!

His friends/girl most likely know who did it so hopefully they’ll tell all that they know. Such a tragedy.

A common theme in these cases is the large number of witnesses and their absolute lack of co-operation with the police. The parking lots of bars and restaurants as well as the Strand Plaza should all be required to have high visibility lighting and CCTV cameras which would aid the police. No mention of this has been made in this case. A lot of people will know the identity of the killer just like a lot of people know the identity of the local drug barons but like the Mafia they are all tight lipped.

Too much violence around some bars. Should we continue to tolerate it, or should we press for more RCIPS presence? I think there should be more of a presence around known places of strife.

  5. Unprofessional Conduct says:

Saw the video of the murder scene what a disgrace as it the flies in the face of all the duties of a police officer The preservation of life, protection of the scene an evidence and detection of crime and the arrest of perpetrators. WOW not a single tenement or action have been upheld in this instance. This unfortunately is not a one off as it now appears to a regular practice from our well paid foreign police we now have controlling our streets. No surprise here though this police service could not give a damn about this island only here for the money.

Sorry to say, but if you engage in thuggery sometimes it bites back at you. Not exactly an innocent victim.

Of course, if we had local police, like we used to, the identity of the suspect would already be well known.
