(CNS): Chief Medical Officer, Dr John Lee said. Monday. there were five positive cases of COVID-19 among 642 tests results that were carried out over the weekend. All of the new cases are in asymptomatic travellers who remain in isolation. There are currently 26 active cases of the virus with four of those people suffering symptoms of the virus.

At the moment there are 1,114 people in a government facility or isolating with the iMsafe technology at home or approved accommodation.

Cayman has now recorded 316 positive case of the virus having carried out 58,489 tests.

While the Cayman Islands remains hopeful that it will have a safe coronvirus free Christmas, as the authorities continue to contain the virus to those in quarantine with no reported or known community transmission, it is a different picture for people around the world.

The UK is facing a serious spike in the virus and a Christmas lock-down as countries all over the world have banned flights from Britain and introduced strict quarantine measures as a result of a mutation of the virus that scientists believe is even more contagious than the original COVID-19 strain.

The scientific data around N501Y remains unclear but experts have estimated that this mutation is 70% more transmissible.

Meanwhile, tin the United States as another vaccine was approved for use the death toll continues to skyrocket and on Friday the US recorded its highest ever number of new cases for a single day with a staggering 249,709 more people becoming infected in a 24 hour period.

CNS: Can you comment without the caps lock on, please? Those comments are deleted, I’m afraid.

From today’s news reports it appears that the US will require preflight Covid testing for everyone flying from the UK to the US. Maybe our government will finally get the message.

Irrelevant for us because of protocols in place. They are tested when they get here so no confusion about false negative tests.

I got a promo email yesterday from Budget Rent a Car Cayman assuring visitors that Cayman would be open in March. On what planet are these guys living?

it don’t matter they can still spread it……smh…

    There isn’t community spread.

I really don’t think that it is possible to have Caymanians coming in from Covid 19 endemic areas and expect a quarantine to work. The Caymanian character in general (with many specific exceptions, of course) is just too, as my dear mother in law used to say, “let go beast”. Either open up altogether or stop incoming flights altogether.

i wonder how many with the new strain????
all because our government would not ask for pre-departure testing………….zzzzzz

RUN! RUN! The 99 percent! The Covid-19 monster bug is going to get you. It’s bigger than ever!! You must wear your masks for 2 more years…

CNS: As the death toll in the US passes 320,000 and parts of England go into another lockdown because of a new strain that spreads even quicker than the original, those who cling to the absurd idea that this is all a big nothing are sounding increasingly deranged. Here in the Cayman Islands, we don’t want our old people and all those with medical conditions to die unnecessarily. End of story.

CNS. Perhaps you can explain why 41,000 people have died unnecessarily in the US by gun shots. No one is denying COVID-19. It’s just that some look at the numbers in perspective.

CNS: (Without checking your figure) 41,000 people died of gunshots because the US has completely insane gun laws and because the gun lobby is so powerful it has successfully blocked almost all attempts to reform gun law. Lawmakers prefer to let children die – or just live in fear of dying – rather than lose their jobs. How is that relevant?

Regarding perspective, 320,000 deaths from COVID is almost 8 times your figure for gun deaths and could get a lot worse before it gets better unless people start taking it seriously.

        • Anonymous says:

Except there are counties with far worse numbers per capita for gun deaths. In fact A neighbor of ours is three times worse. So perhaps it’s not insane gun laws, but sheer number of people!

CNS: Well, if you want to compare the US to failed states riddled with poverty, I guess you’re not doing too badly. However, if you want to compare yourself with other advanced nations, you’re at the bottom of the pile. For example, the rate of gun deaths per year in the US is 12.21 per 100,000. In the UK, which has strict gun laws, that number is 0.23 per 100,000. US gun laws are bonkers. (See here for source of stats)

          • Anonymous says:

Switzerland has 2.84 per 100.000 and a minimum of 28 guns per 100 inhabitants (missing the mandatory military rifle each adult male has to keep at home while they are fit for service).
I believe it may be an educational issue rather than a regulatory one.

Why has the government continued to remain silent on the 19 year-old who breached quarantine twice? The public has a right to know if this individual is/was COVID positive and what steps have been taken to ensure those who came in contact with him are also isolating. I hope this individual did not come from the UK with this new strain of COVID that is so much more easily transmittable.

    Are the sick? Bet not.

Like the report says, 4 of the 26 current active are symptomatic and sick this week. More importantly, if the condition of these 26 were to suddenly worsen, and need ICU ventilation equipment, that would occupy our entire tri-island capacity. CMO should note that N501Y repatriation super-spreader flights are a much more dangerous game, anticipate what that means for management, and adjust the breadth, pace, and human scrutiny of inbound Travel Time passenger waivers accordingly.

Cayman has 5 new cases, 316 cases total, a 19 year old covid positive kid who skipped out of isolation and went to the gym and clubs , over 1,000 in isolation, and there is optimism cayman is covid free. HUH? WHAT? Reality check?
