Police officers arrest suspects on 19 Dec

(CNS): Armed cops were caught on camera rounding up suspects in George Town early Saturday morning after more reports of fights and gun violence. Although the RCIPS has not revealed details of any specific arrests, officers were said to have responded to reports of gunfire at a bar on Dump Road and a serious brawl at a bar on Martin Drive.

According to information released by the police, one man received head, back and arm injuries during a fight involving several men in George Town Central. He was taken to hospital at around midnight Friday/Saturday and later discharged.

Then at around 2:00am officers were called to a bar on Seymour Road in the industrial area following reports of gunshots. Officers recovered a number of spent shells but there have been no reports of anyone being shot.

Despite video footage taken close to Dump Road by readers some time after the gunshot incident showing armed police arresting two men, the RCIPS said no one has been arrested in connection with either of these two incidents.

Anyone with information regarding the gunshots or the fight is asked to contact the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.

Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or the police website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online.

As a cultural historian and a chronicler on Caymanian society I write to register my alarm at the creeping encroachment of lawlessness fuelled by an underground economy in which sex , drugs , guns and the penchant for malfeasance by the high and mighty are the calling cards of the miscreants who are obviously in control . For years observant residents have been witnessing a steadying decline in moral standards and a somewhat frightening challenge to the social control forces of the state for the monopoly on violence.

Those who fail to see the nexus between drugs ,sex and guns and corruption ,need look no further than the media reports of last weekend’s events on Seymour Road and the burning item of a celebrated personality , now fallen to earth. The authorities are famous for their seeming satisfaction of the intervention into street crime by claiming ” no shots were fired and no one was hurt “. On the matter of the high and mighty pay their debt to society “kisses seem to go by favours “and once more the eloquence is obscene . Well ,so far so good but how long is the situation going to hold ?

Are we heading into the kind of moral bankruptcy where the institutions designed to lead us have themselves become neutered by their own inability to do what is right ? Or have we jettisoned moral absolutes for political expediency even when the court of public opinion has called us out?

Writing about the moral rot in the nineteenth century United States one of my historical heroes , the social reformer , orator and statesman Frederick Douglas penned these lines:

[“For] it is not light that we need but fire: it is not the gentle shower but thunder . We need the storm , the whirlwind and the earthquake . The feeling of the nation must be roused :the propriety of the nation must be startled , the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed :and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced”.

But alas , how can this happen when those whom we appoint and elect as our guardians act timidly , or sit silently and collude and conspire to ignore evil by their inaction even after they awarded themselves exalted titles ?

“There are no gangs in the Cayman Islands”. Sound familiar? What did you do about it at the time? Sweet F.A.

Just stop tolerating it. You are all complicit.

Well Mr Roy, we look to leaders like you to speak up and condemn the “malfeasance by the high and mighty ‘….not a peep from any one of you to damn the actions (for many years) of the dishonorable speaker.
Now is the time for you to stand for what is proper in our community, not in carefully crafted words from a book, but in plain speak for all to know you are against the moral decay being sanctioned by the MPs.

These balloon heads are driven to these back road and cheap ghetto bars as they are not allowed in or cannot control themselves anywhere else.

Close them down at 9pm so they can get the school bus home and sleep it off over the whole weekend

The video of the women ( and I use that term lightly) brawling on the street for all the world to see is really something else. THAT is an embarrassment.

The cops need to tackle whoever let Skyler in as a tourist and whoever is involved in not prosecuting the Covid positive 19 year old MAN who has thrice broken quarantine. That would show a sincere attempt by government to protect us from community spread and another lockdown which more and more seems inevitable.

9.48am Why not have him quarantine at McKeever’s house, Im sure they will have it surrounded by a 24 hour police guard. Save some money that way. Incidentally I hope they removed all the alcohol from his residence.

Yes I’ve seen many a young women make a tongue in cheek gesture. Could it possibly be meaning something else?

        • Anonymous says:

Yes but Mac’s “twin brother” will be seen all over the place…

          • anon says:

5.06pm Thank the Lord this “man” if he can be called that, does not have a twin brother. He does have a chauffeur provided by Govt so he can travel outside his house when inebriated.
