(CNS): Another traveller tested positive for COVID-19 at the weekend, which brings the total recorded positive cases of the virus since the border was opened on 1 October to 78. The latest positive sample was among a batch of 422 tests, the rest of which were negative, carried out since Friday on travellers entering or finished quarantine or home-isolation. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said the individual was an asymptomatic traveller who will remain in isolation. There are currently 1,168 people isolating at home or in a government facility and 26 of them currently have COVID-19. Four of them have symptoms but none are in hospital.

The tally of COVID-19 cases in Cayman since March is now 290, with just two deaths of people who were positive. The last certain case of community transmission was at the Red Ba Primary School in July but it was likely a false alarm.

Public health officials have now carried out 54,591 PCR tests, which are now largely focused on travellers and frontline workers at the border.

Another paper is reporting on yet another quarantine breach, this one from a government quarantine hotel. People need to understand that breaches of quarantine can have deadly results and government officials and the courts need to take these incidents seriously. According to Australian media a hotel quarantine breach there caused many deaths.

“According to counsel for the independent enquiry now examining Australia’s Covid-19 disaster:

“The failure by the hotel quarantine program to contain the virus is responsible for the deaths of 768 and infection of some 18,418 others… It was a program which failed to meet its primary objective to keep us safe from the virus.”

(CNN)Taiwanese authorities have slapped a $3,500 fine on a man who broke quarantine regulations for just eight seconds.

Now that is how you deter people from ignoring quarantine rules. Could we please import that judge?

How many negative tests since October 1st?

      Not enough

About 20% that tested negative on arrival tested positive after 14 days which just goes to prove how important it is that we maintain quarantine of no less than 14 days.

Minor detail, only 2.4% test positive on arrival.

That represents somewhere between 25 and 30 people that out of the 1100+ that are in quarantine at this moment and I am glad that none of those 25 – 30 people are out in the community infecting others.

And yet the CDC recently reduced the quarantine requirements to 7 days with a negative test and 10 days with no test, citing studies that show you are only infectious for 6 days after getting Covid, so likely those that have tested positive, after 14 days, are in no danger of spreading it. They also say you can continue to test positive for up to 3 months, and still not be contagious. We based our 14 day requirements on the best information we had at the time, however we should also review that data and adjust as needed based on the new studies.

Wrong! If they where tested on day 8 after arrival they would have shown positive.

Is the point of this article to say the border should not have been opened at all?

What not pre test could stop 70% of cases coming!

In part because you will be abandoning Caymanians in Miami airport, and breaching international law in the process. It makes sense to allow residents in, no matter their Covid status. We just have to keep them safely segregated from everyone else.

Nonsense – No one has the right to board an international flight while contagious with a potentially deadly disease. All anyone testing positive has to do is quarantine until they test negative and then they can board the flight back to Cayman.
