37 COVID-19 cases since start of month

(CNS): With one more COVID-19 positive test emerging in results announced on Friday, there have now been 37 cases of the virus recorded among travellers in quarantine this month alone. This latest case was in a batch of 417 samples processed over the last day, the rest of which were negative. The traveller is said to be asymptomatic and one of 1,426 people isolating in a government facility or at home. There are currently 27 people with active cases of the virus among those in isolation, five of whom are displaying COVID-19 symptoms, though none of them are ill enough to be in hospital.

Meanwhile, Cayman remains on track to receive its first vaccines in January.

As the shots began to be administered across the UK and the US, the UK vaccinated over 135,000 people in the first week. However the Trump administration’s national vaccination programme already seems to have run into trouble.

Pfizer released a statement Thursday denying allegations it was having issues producing its COVID-19 vaccine, pointing out that it had millions of shots of vaccine in warehouses. The company said it was waiting on the federal authorities to tell it where the vaccines needed to go.

On Friday the death toll in America reached 320,000. On Thursday alone 3,400 people died and almost 238,000 new cases were recorded.

As of this morning more than 30 countries have closed their borders to flights from the UK. What do we hear in relation to flights to Cayman – nothing.

  2. Anonymous says:

Many more countries have now stopped all flights from the UK because of the new strain of Covid. Why is it that our government will not even require testing before people get on planes to Cayman. They are playing with fire and we are the ones who will get burned by this virus.

  3. Dead people can’t vote eh Alden? says:

Anything for UK eh Alden?? All about you and your knighthood! How many Caymanian lives will be impacted or lost before you stop these flights from the UK You and this governor need to be sued by anyone who is infected or affected by your idiotic decisions not to close down passengers flights from London! Sad when Caymanian lives doesn’t matter! Our votes will though if we make it to May 2021 or is that your election strategy in the first place?? what a mess we in ?

Or shall we listen To Doktor Lee and Garcia and Roper who are unusually very silent about this Extremely serious situation now transpiring over in London. Come on Cayman don’t let this vaccine promise fool you or let down your guard.

  6. CC Rider says:

This government and our dear governor clearly need to address this situation occurring in the UK with this highly contagious variant of Covid 19 which has cause a shutdown of Christmas in The Uk or shall they remain silent yet again about these flights and hope they can make to January.Shut these flights down Now!

Lots of crying and whining going on here. Caymankind.

  8. Anonymous says:

Due to the new strain in the UK other countries are banning flights….why are we lagging behind? I haven’t heard anything about this from our government.

    • Anonymous says:

I’m sure flights will be banned here soon too for British Airways if other countries are taking that stance.
Cayman has proved with the recent jail ruling that they are strict about COVID-19.

  9. Anonymous says:

The new mutation of Covid that was is now spreading in the UK is said to be 70% more transmissible. Surely that is sufficient justification for requiring day of departure testing as a requirement for boarding a flight to Cayman.

    From today’s Guardian:
The new variant, spreading most rapidly across London, the south-east and the east of England, is up to 70% more transmissible than the original virus. Rising alarm over the dramatic spread of the new variant was a significant motivating factor behind the above restrictions announced today for England, Wales and Scotland and the festive period.

Exactly. Surely this is a minor inconvenience that could at least mitigate some of the risk to other passengers, flight staff and the community. This is especially necessary now that they are allowing people to quarantine at home. Also people might be more mindful about social distancing in the weeks leading up to their flight if they know they’ll be tested before being allowed on the plane.

So much more contagious! Thankfully it is apparently NOT more lethal or resistant to vaccines. 🤞

  10. Henry says:

PCR tests that indicate a positive case where the cycle threshold is 35+ are meaningless and according to the WHO report released in the past few days, are more likely to be false positives, especially where people are asymptomatic and no contacts to trace.

    https://www.who.int/news/item/14-12-2020-who-information-notice-for-ivd-users

I would like the HSA to confirm how many ‘positive’ cases we’ve had where the cycle threshold is 35+. Let us see what margin of error has been accepted and simply over looked. Let’s see what the real numbers are now that we know the truth about the weakness in testing.

To the public – if you get a test, make sure you ask them how many cycles your sample underwent.
Folks, don’t just take it at face value.

It would be nice to see some investigative journalism from CNS on this. Let the public, who don’t know how to do this kind of research, know the truth.

Set yourselves further apart from the others.

I’ve been wondering about this!! I remember Dr. Lee talking about part of the reason results took so long was how many times it had to be run.

The Prospect student “positive” case made me think that they’re running those cycles until they hit positive.

    Tell me leaders of cayman,
What exactly are going to do to safeguard our island as the world crumbles to covid and lockdowns?
Continue to fly cases in till we say oops this is out of control?

      Distribute the vaccine

      • McCarron McLaughlin says:

        Distribute the vaccine?

There’s a newer variation of COVID-19 that is mutating in the UK.

You really believe that the vaccine will work after mutated versions of COVID-19 are popping up now?

I got a bridge in East End, I would like to sell you.

        • Anonymous says:

So what it’s only case a case mortality rate of less than 0.5%.
Let’s move on like all the other islands!

Cayman should introduce the saliva test.
More people would volunteer, since it is not painful.
Studies have shown it is as good as the stick in your brain.

  13. McCarron McLaughlin says:

Just an observation of our neighbors to the North, If COVID19 had killed so many people in the U.S., how come the total number of deaths, according to the @CDCgov, for the years 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 are essentially the same? People wake up!

CNS: This offers a good explanation.

    • Anonymous says:

Well, that doesn’t really help. How many people in Cayman have the flu or have had the flu in the past 2 weeks. I have, my kids have and I know the schools have (first hand reports from other parents).

How many have reported it and how many were tested for Covid? Is it in the community and we’re just getting on with things?

I suspect so – and the same would likely apply to any other country (we are certainly not special).

The numbers are just plain wrong and we all are smart enough to know that.

    • Anonymous says:

They are not ready for the truth. Covid, and normal human response to it are part of a plan that can not be stopped. Let it go.

  14. Anonymous says:

I thought Operation Warpspeed had been ready to push the deploy button for weeks waiting for Pfizer. Now Pfizer holding vaccine with no go plan. Typical.

    • Anonymous says:

They are holding it so the booster shot would be administered.

    • Anonymous says:

2,085 people were vaccinated in AK. 5 adverse effects, 2 serious.
      Better watch and wait.

      • Anonymous says:

But if 2085 people in AK contracted COVID-19 you can be sure that more than 5 would have died.
There are always going to be some people who have side effects with a vaccine based on the amount of people in the general population who have to deal with all sorts of allergies and health issues every day.
I have a serious health issue but I hope to get the vaccine ASAP as I would love to be able to eventually travel and see family and friends.

        • Anonymous says:

Wrong. If those hypothetical 2085 you refer to were under the age of 60 and not in a nursing home with co-morbidity complications none of them would have died. But don’t let facts get in the way of your arguments.

#vaccinate at risk people. Mass vaccination isn’t solving the problem. But it will make pharma a lot of money.

    • Hubert says:

Today the American military apologized for mistakes in the vaccine roll out plan. It was NOT / NOT Pfizer’s fault.
