Pirates washed out by stormy weather

(CNS): With this year’s pirate capers already curtailed by COVID-19, the trimmed Pirates Week festivities have now been postponed as a result of the deluge of rain expected this weekend as Tropical Storm Eta returns. Officials from the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, which now runs the annual shindig, said they were moving most of the events planned for the next five days to next week.

“Due to the inclement weather predicted for this weekend, we have made the difficult decision to move Pirates Week in Grand Cayman to 19 November until 24 November,” said Pirates Week GM Melanie McField. “As that weekend is not a long weekend, it offers us less days to complete all of the events and so we will be moving the National Song Competition as well as the District Heritage Ambassador Costume Competition to CayFest in February.”

However, events in Little Cayman remain set for 13 to 15 November.

Pirate’s Week has been dying for some years now, In recent years it has become rather corny. Time to cut the cord, pull the plug!

For 2021 can the Pirates Week Office start with a blank page? Then put ‘bring in tourists during slow season’ at the top as the reason for Pirates Week. Everything else needs to flow from there. And there should be no sacred cows. Because clearly a lot of what used to work no longer does. Times (and communication and motivation) and people (tourist and local) have changed. We need to change with them.

(Obviously I think Pirates as a theme can still work, and an event to bring in tourists during the slow season is useful to the country. But I don’t mind if they even want to question those assumptions.)

      Bury piracy, please.

What civilised country would celebrate such debauchery.

Just another imported idea that somehow became a ‘national event’.

Mo$e$ frowning yet again – life goes on without the pirates. But alas Government will find a way to spend money.

Same story. Different year. Move the date of the event to summer. Or cancel it.

I think most people would be fine with a cancellation…
