Rum Point

(CNS): With the return of the freedom to socialise since the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions, anti-social behaviour has also returned to Rum Point. Police said they have received complaints from the community about drug activity, loud music, speeding and drunk drivers at the popular weekend beach spot. So on Sunday police conducted a full-scale operation to deter lawbreakers at the Kaibo and Rum Point area of North Side.

Officers from the K-9 Unit, Air Operations Unit, Firearms Response Unit, Community Policing Unit and Operational Support Unit, as well as officers from the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, all came out to conduct searches on boats and the surrounding beaches. They made three drug-related arrests while they were there and conducted related searches in other districts. All those arrested have been bailed to return pending further investigations.

“Members of the community expressed concerns to the police about an increased presence of loud music, drug usage and other nuisances in this area, especially on Sundays and in particularly after the softening of the COVID-19 restrictions,” said Inspector Fernando Soto, Area Commander for the Eastern Districts.

“The operation was successful as we were able to disrupt a number of illegal activities resulting in a few arrests. As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce the incidence of crime and ensure the safety and well-being of the community, we will conducting operations on an ongoing basis,” he added.

Before you start beating your chest, this is your job and it should not have been allowed to get to this point! The article makes it sound like this place is 500 miles into the rain forest. It is literally about 500 metres from GT! This is an every weekend problem, so why are they allowed to come into this community every weekend and use drugs, scare people with the speeding sea crafts, litter the place and just all-round act like animals?

Because the police are more concerned with overtime payments than actually keeping the peace. For many weeks a while ago, an RCIPS K9 handler and dog patrolled Rum Point, this was an excellent initiative that pushed this human trash back out to their boats or into their cars. But oh no, the COP decided that he wasn’t going to listen to the serious and legitimate concerns of local residents and law abiding citizens, and removed the unit. In turn this had led to an upsurge in disgusting and illegal behaviour. Drugs are openly used and sold, young local men and women drink openly in the street, some using their vehicles as a make shift bar. Bottles of Hennessy are openly sat on the roofs of cars, and the stench of ganga pervades the air. Then to follow this example of blatant lawlessness, the morons get into their cars and speed back to whatever hole they crawled out of. Don’t expect to see a RCIPS Traffic Unit after 4:00pm and certainly not at dusk when these maniacs set off on their suicidal and potentially murderous journeys.
So stop patting yourselves on the back RCIPS, it was you who have allowed this madness, so get on and do your damn jobs and stop acting like bananas. Yes, yellow and hanging around in bunches.

I don’t understand how we can spend almost $200mln on police services and be left with normal duties being sold to us as special operations. These headlines scream for new leadership.

The vacant lot next to Rum Point beach near the Jet Ski area is always filled with people who leave tons of trash, use the trees and bushes as bathrooms and we have seen numerous, numerous drug deals occurring behind the vacant building in the lot.It is well known to all of us who live there that this has been happening for years. One day of patrolling will not end this.

They also forgot to mention all of the beer bottles, plastic bottles and cans they leave behind! Even poached empty Conch shells!
The amount of boat traffic from inexperienced boat handling combined with alcohol is only a disaster waiting to happen. Not to mention the speeders on the roads! Every single Sunday like clockwork from 5-7pm they make their way back to the Western districts weaving in and out of traffic putting innocent peoples lives at risk.
When will we ever start regular traffic stops and possibly saving someone’s or an entire families life? I also feel that we need to implement a law regarding boat handling and alcohol consumption. We are one of the few places that does not have it – and for an island we need it!
Culturally RumPoint was a place where families would go to by boat or car to swim, fish, relax with the family and maybe have a beer but times have obviously changed along with the crowd and so should the regulations.

Why not tell us who had to be pulled unconscious in to the police boat a couple weeks ago?

I am out there most Saturdays and Sundays. Loud music is usually coming from Locals boats. No respect for others around them. Sunday they have the little 18′ “Slapper” speed boats racing around which is annoying too. RP would be a pleasant place if it wasn’t for the locals and the party boats playing their awful Soca music at ridiculous volumes. FINE them. Otherwise it is usually quite pleasant especially on a Saturday.

” if it wasn’t for the locals and the party boats playing their awful Soca music ”

“waaahhhhh all these locals having fun using their birthright to have a good time”

Suck it up buttercup! Sell ya land back (that you bought from sell-out Caymanians) if you don’t like us!

    • Anonymous says:

Just get some of your expat buddies to throw some concrete over it. That’ll learn those locals.

Rum Point has always been a place where Caymanians would go on Sundays to hang out in the water, play music and drink. We have been doing it for years! So for you to come here and expect us to change our lifestyle because you don’t like it, is disgusting. If you don’t like the lifestyle then don’t go to rumpoint. It was never a problem until you foreigners came along. Please move back to your shitty ass country and make your little coins else where. We ain’t want you here anyway.

    • Anonymous says:

As a multigenerational Caymanian, I take offense to your use of the term “locals”. Cayman is our birthright. Have some respect for the land you are living in, uninvited or not, you came to “our paradise” for reasons probably known only to you. As I understand it there were persons out there on Sunday who were not Caymanian who were causing the ruckus. I can agree however that boats need to be regulated.

I often wonder if posts like this one are trolls just making posts up to try to create a divided community. I can’t imagine anyone would really make such blatantly rude, stereotypical comments.

Crack down on the captain of the vessel and ensure he is not Drunk we have a double fatality just one year ago in the north sound area and plenty close calls (Cayman needs a proper boating school)Cayman is the only place you can purchase any type of water craft and do as you please with zero knowledge 🙁 it is sad to know one spliff will get your boat seized and life ruined but you can drink as much units of Rum you want on the Point. Send help more will die RIP Manny this guy was not even drinking he was just driving home from work and the Rumpoint Raggamuffins killed him and his co worker the north sound should be closely observed.

    • Anonymous says:

One spliff will get your boat seized? Got any examples to prove that? Because the only boats I have seen seized are the ones with several hundred pounds on board. Go on and prove me wrong – name a single case in the last 5 years in which a recreational boater was found in possession of a spliff – or even under the influence – and had his boat seized. Yeah – thought so. Stop using the drunken idiots careering around the Sound to justify commercial smuggling.

Was at Starfish Point this weekend and the amount of trash that had been discarded everywhere was heart-breaking.

    • Anonymous says:

For the people in the back:

Who is leaving all the trash?

Just a question, as the country has been locked down due to covid the last few months?

      • Anonymous says:

Scared to say for the risk of being told that ‘if I don’t like it, I can go home’ but if they only knew how fortunate they were to have a beautiful place like this to call home they wouldn’t throw their trash all over it.

        • Anonymous says:

a few years ago we didn’t have a trash problem so you do the math

Creating a culture of enforcement is important.

When you take the lesser offences seriously, you create awareness and culture that laws do matter.

Enforcement in various departments needs to be ratcheted up.

I think the biggest problem at rum point is the old heads that use to go stopped going. I remember two dudes fighting and in 30 seconds multiple people broke them up each gave the fighters some licks and sent them home for the day. Now ppl run for their phone instead

  13. Anonymous says:

The cops here never catch anyone if its not red handed
Even when their own officers where attacked it took them months to arrest a guy hiding in west bay

So they arrested some folks for smoking weed, ruined their lives with a criminal charge, while others get insanely drunk and that’s fine by you…

Useless waste of money, they should try catching real criminals instead of wasting their budget and our time with arresting couple of people smoking weed by the beach

    • Anonymous says:

Because one’s illegal and the other isnt? And what exactly do you call someone breaking the law, knowing its a crime but thinking it shouldn’t apply to them? They are a criminal, aren’t they? I guess your big boys book of law differentiates between real criminals – those that break laws that you agree with – and people committing criminal offences which you think shouldn’t be a crime. If I think that coke shouldnt be a criminal offence, does that mean I should be able to sell it to your kids without the police coming after me, because after all I think its not really a crime? You can see how this goes.

Weed has been proven to be medically beneficial, and don’t have to mention magnitudes safer than alcohol and tobacco.

Its the ghetto, uneducated people that are the real problem. Rum point used to be a fun place to spend the day with family before the hood-rats showed up and ruined it for everybody.

    • Anonymous says:

Nah. You don’t have to be ghetto to have $ for a big speaker.
It is the LOUD speakers with the private boats trying to complete with the profession speakers on the party boats!

  15. Anonymous says:

They can always crack down on locals but what about these out of control developers? People needs to bring law suits against the government and the police – its always one rule for the rich and another rule for the poor. So sick of it!

There are serious problems with criminal activity in North Side. Additionally, there are clear signs of people living rough near the ocean and the surrounding areas. It is happening to this once quiet district is a shame and something needs to be done to return law and order to the area ASAP.

  17. Anonymous says:

Yeay RCIP you caught people smoking weed and gave people speeding tickets. A whole circus at Rum Point.

Sigh. Mean while houses are being broken into and they can never catch the thieves or murderers for that matter.
