Church to protest DP bill and LGBT community

(CNS): Local churches are not just campaigning to raise funds for a legal battle against the implementation of the Domestic Partnership Bill but they are also planning a demonstration against members of the LGBT community this weekend. Despite claiming that their actions do not constitute hate speech and are not homophobic, some of the messages circulating on social media from Christian leaders go well beyond objections to same-sex marriage.

Pastors, preachers and ministers of Christian churches are calling for a stand against the proposed law, which would provide a legal framework to protect the rights of same-sex couples to a private family life. But they are also protesting against the people themselves.

“Let’s not open the flood gates of the LGBT+ and their cohorts and all that they are desiring to do to destroy the Cayman Islands,” said one church leader.

Other pastors are busying campaigning to raise money for a legal challenge against Governor Martyn Roper’s move to steer through the Domestic Partnership Bill under his reserved powers. Plans to have MLAs collect that money were changed due to concerns about politicians handling the cash. Parishioners are now asked to donate directly to the church where they attend.

Despite very clear warnings that the UK would act to uphold the rule of law if legislators voted down the compromise legislation, the Legislative Assembly rejected to bill by one vote. Consequently, the governor has moved to republish the bill and take final consultation before a number of amendments will be made to the draft. Roper will then give assent to the bill early next month.

The need to pass the legislation is a result of a combination of factors, notably that Cayman was in breach of its international obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights as well as its own Bill of Rights. In addition, following the well documented Day-Bodden gay marriage legal case, the government has ignored a directive from the Cayman Islands Court of Appeal and is also facing a further appeal before the Privy Council in London next year.

Unless government implements some kind of legal framework that the courts deem functionally equivalent to marriage, the government will almost certainly lose that appeal and the chief justice’s original ruling legalising same-sex marriage will be reinstated with no further road to appeal.

On Friday the governor said the homophobic comments being made in public and on social media were unacceptable and urged people to think about the discrimination being suffered by some Caymanians.

Nevertheless, certain factions of the Cayman community, including most opposition members of the Legislative Assembly and some members of the government bench, as well as several conservative Christian congregations and other members of the community, continue to openly degrade and discriminate against members of the LGBT community.

According to various social media messages, the church demonstration is planned for 4pm on Saturday outside the Government Administration Building.

    Dear Governor Roper:

This presents an urgent and timely new deployment opportunity for the brand new CI Regiment who are now formally in service. They can journal this in their calendar to encircle unreasonable public protesters, and help the RCIPS to arrest, fingerprint, and coordinate charges for offending ministers, and attendees contributing to malicious hate speech.

Penal Code (2017 Revision) Sections 88-88C “create various criminal offences which may potentially be committed by individuals using hate speech”.

In particular Section 88B: “A person who…uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour…within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress commits an offence…”

All the people of Cayman are counting on this type of malicious activity to receive a proper and formal police and legal response led and overseen from the Governor’s office. Hate speech is not free speech, nor is it an acceptable opinion to hold in 2020.

Certainly, there are better things for the Churches and their leaders and supporters to be doing than going on and on about LGBT people and our rights.

Take a look around you people and channel your concerns around the REAL problems in Cayman. Just in case you don’t see any, open your eyes to the Drug Trafficking, Drug Use, Sexual Abuse, Child Abuse, Poor Housing, Poor Nutrition, Environmental Health, not to mention all of the quality of life issues the Churches could be addressing or helping the government with.

The tiny number of your fellow Caymanians who are seeking equality and a sense of justice is very, very small. After all, the majority of GAY Caymanians have fled their homeland for other countries that respect equality for all humans.

There is a significant amount of discrimination &/or unethical conduct taking place these days. For example, free speech and the ability to express your views and opinions is still oftentimes denied or suppressed by people in positions of power who want to carefully control the narrative and spin the truth. These people are often unwilling or unable to defend their positions so they resort to using their power to suppress the free exchange of ideas and opinions.

Let’s hope that people take the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed DPB and other related legislation.

Hate speech is not protected free speech, and that’s not a matter of personal opinion. See Penal Code §88A-C, and B in particular. The governor should back up his statements from last Friday with a visible show of force deterrent that represents the new standard of acceptability going forward. To not do so, risks undermining his own authority and that of the FCO. UK Territories not only have the obligation to offer a legal mechanism for same-sex civil partnerships, but they also have to defend those rights against those who would participate in malicious anti-equality rallies such as this one. Stronger messages are necessary it seems.

With so many ills in our society, the church/ministers could choose a battle that is win-able and one that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of the most vulnerable Caymanians. Here are a few suggestions (in no particular order) the churches could spend time, energy and resources on. These DEMAND marching for:
    • Mental Health Facility for young persons
    • Youth Drug Rehabilitation Facility
    • Educational programmes for High School drop-outs
    • Fair Employment opportunities for ALL Caymanians
    • Better Public Education that actually prepares

    • Accountability and transparency of government
    spending and concessions given
    • Career and Guidance counselling
    • Proper public VOCATIONAL institution
    • A decent minimum wage
    • Affordable facilities for Special Education Needs

So many more things but this should be a start. Remember GOD IS LOVE and he commanded us ‘To love our neighbour as ourselves’. He also created mankind in ‘his own image’

There is a difference between tolerance of a sin and the legalization of a sin. The Christian community is against the sin and not the people. This protest is about the fact that a country with a constitution based on Christian values is now being forced to legalize a sin. There are many sins committed and tolerated daily but this one is about to be legalized. Caymanians are now a minority and therefore being forced by the majority to go against the values we were built on. The LGBTQ community is already being tolerated and thankfully we have not had any hate crimes in Cayman against this community. The intention of the Christian community is to protect the values our country was built on and they too have freedom of speech and should not be discriminated and ridiculed. It’s easy to stand and allow wrong to happen but it takes guts to stand for what’s right and for God’s spoken words. I pray for this world as we all continue to validate sin to make it an easy excuse to ignore and/or partake. God bless Cayman and may His words always prevail!

      You aren’t in Jamaica anymore.

You might be surprised to learn that (unlike in Jamaica) Homosexuality was legalized in the Cayman Islands in 2000 (for the record, that was 20 years ago) with the revocation of stone-aged Buggery Act 1533. For emphasis, the year of former governing Act of Law was 1533, which was 487 years ago. For context, that’s when Henry VIII (six marriages and many executions) sat on the throne, dressed like an extra from Game of Thrones. Even he was excommunicated by the Church of England in 1538 for being an idiot. He built the Tower of London and is recorded as one of the most notorious evil-doers in the pantheon of monarchy. So we’re clear, that was the moral-compass that authored that Law. Tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousand of people, were murdered in the UK and colonies since 1538 under that law.

Even subsequently to legalization in 2000 in Cayman there was a headline violent deadly hate crime in 2008 that cannot be erased by your poor memory or attempts at revision:

“…although Frederic Bise was a gay man, his brutal killing was never prosecuted as a hate crime. Anglin met Bise at a West Bay jerk stand and went home with him. But at some point the men went to another location, possibly Barkers, where Bise was beaten to death and later found in the trunk of his own blazing car on the driveway of his own home.” Leonard Ebanks was convicted of assisting Anglin with disposing of his body. Both men circulated in the community for years, boasting of what they did, before being finally sentenced in 2017. That means that for years there were entire social circles of people that were perfectly fine with the murder and gruesome disposal, and very few came forward to provide witness testimony.

That’s serious evil, witnessed by an all-seeing God and most of us.

While the six passages that address same-sex eroticism in the ancient world are negative about the practices they mention, there is no evidence that these in any way speak to same-sex relationships of love and mutuality. To the contrary, the amount of cultural, historical and linguistic data surrounding how sexuality in the cultures of the biblical authors operated demonstrates that what was being condemned in the Bible is very different than the committed same-sex partnerships we know and see today. The stories of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) and the Levite’s concubine (Judges 19) are about sexual violence and the Ancient Near East’s stigma toward violating male honor. The injunction that “man must not lie with man” (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13) coheres with the context of a society anxious about their health, continuing family lineages, and retaining the distinctiveness of Israel as a nation. Each time the New Testament addresses the topic in a list of vices (1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:10), the argument being made is more than likely about the sexual exploitation of young men by older men, a practice called pederasty, and what we read in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans is a part of a broader indictment against idolatry and excessive, self-centered lust that is driven by desire to “consume” rather than to love and to serve as outlined for Christian partnership elsewhere in the Bible. While it is likely that Jews and Christians in the 1st century had little to no awareness of a category like sexual orientation, this doesn’t mean that the biblical authors were wrong. What it does mean, at a minimum, is that continued opposition toward same-sex relationships and LGBTQ identities must be based on something other than these biblical texts, which brings us back to a theology of Christian marriage or partnership.

Natural selection has an influence on what we ultimately come to see as normal and abnormal. Some people say that nature favors a heterosexual pairing as it is the only natural way to ensure the continuation of mankind. As such, to them, homosexuality is clearly a deviation from the norm.

Many creatures have variations that are not all considered normal. These deviations can come in the form of both physical and mental abnormalities. These abnormalities can and often do take root during development in the womb but might not manifest themselves until later in life.

Homosexuals might not be considered normal because they don’t represent what most people believe to be normal. However, normal is not the criteria that should be used for us to extend love and compassion to anyone that is in need.

Please you holier-than-thou Christians, find a good cause and go support it. And don’t forget the church treasurer who stole from the church to send to his gay boyfriend in Honduras. Church is what/who are keeping people from God. They are the biggest deterrents.

Both sides have a right to express themselves and with this right will come many things that are said that will upset both sides.

I’ll be out in my rainbow regalia just to show my support for Chrsitians and my right to do whatever I damn well please.

    Mind your OWN business.

The Cayman Islands is built on Christian values, from our national anthem and our logo on on the flag which comes from the Bible. Why not get married somewhere else why do we have to conform?? People who came to work etc.why don’t you look for somewhere else to live that accept you the way you are. Marriage is between man and woman finish, God loves you but did not create marriage to be like that. Governor Roper you came to Cayman and the people accepted, accepted you to be for the the caymanians and do right by them not force a law on us which we won’t stand for.

This is a domestic partnerships bill. It’s specifically not a marriage. Isn’t this exactly what you all wanted?

No matter how many times that is repeated some can not understand. Yet they have opinion about how others must live their lives. I honestly don’t think it’s about same sex marriage, DPB, or whatever. It’s about the grip of power some of them are losing. A lot here like to play God and decide how others are allowed to live.

Not a marriage, it merely gives same sex couples the legal rights we all enjoy, such as pensions etc..

For people who claim to be Christian, it would serve you well to read your own Bible. There is nothing in there aside from Leviticus that even mentions homosexuality. For something that you claim is important to your religion, you people certainly do a terrible job understanding your own Bible.

    Great photo.

    Couple of things to note;

    i. up until the 60s they wouldn’t have been allowed to marry each other due to their skin color in places like the US, UK pretty much everywhere;
ii. women wouldn’t have been able to work, vote etc until the 40-50s?

    That’s called….wait for it……..discrimination.

    Then look what happened……..

I believe if we preach and exhibit Christ’s love and grace more we wouldn’t have time tobe so worried about what people do with their lives. People are more susceptible to love. It’s not our duty as Christians to protest what we choose to conceived as sin. it’s our duty to profess love and allow Christ to do the rest. I am a sinner saved by grace and I pray that day will never come when I would forget that, because that’s the day I become a judge and jury of others. Let’s pray for each other and let God be God.

And sadly David, it’s homophobes like you that give Christians and Caymanians a bad name. You get a life – hopefully one not stuck in the 1950’s.
