Active COVID-19 cases down to three

(CNS): Cayman has now gone a full week with no new positive COVID-19 cases being reported. Medical Officer for Health Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez said Wednesday that 310 tests had been carried out since yesterday’s report and there were no new positive samples. Active cases have also now fallen to just three asymptomatic people, as the country edges towards the goal of eliminating the coronavirus inside the borders.

Over the last week Cayman has conducted 1,461 tests, all of which were negative. In total 25,530 PCR tests have been carried, which identified a confirmed positive tally of just 201 cases since testing began in March. The PCR test screening programme continues and members of the public can be tested on request.

The government is also now carrying out IgG, or antibody, testing to see if those who had tested positive earlier via a PCR test have acquired coronavirus antibodies and to find those who may have unknowingly contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Meanwhile, as Cayman beings to look increasingly safe, the problem of opening the border remains, given the situation in the United States, which gets grimmer by the day.

On Wednesday the US surpassed three million cases of COVID-19, following another record-breaking day on Tuesday, when more than 60,000 new cases were recorded across the nation. The virus has killed more than 131,000 Americans and hospitalisations are surging, with some hospitals across the Sunbelt nearing capacity of ICU beds.

Meanwhile, around the world almost 12 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported and more than 546,000 people have died as a result.

Remember, a few weeks ago, the Governor of Florida fired a state health statistics officer when she refused to fake corona virus stats so he could fast-track the re-opening. No only fired but he castigated her publicly.

I wonder who’s laughing now, if it were laughable?

Lol. They going to bring their labs with them? Seriously, this place.

On the 4th of July Florida test 65,137 people. Maybe we should bring those testers down, have them quarantine for 2 weeks and then test us all in one day. Obviously this will never happen, but it would sure be nice to eliminate the local paranoia and misunderstandings of how tests work.

Just last week people on this site were saying we should not let anyone in from the US is as if it were a tiny country. Now Florida is large? It’s only one State!

We aren’t letting people in from the USA, because they haven’t done the work to contain their accelerating viral outbreak. Our territory seems to be nearing R1-R0, while theirs is >R1.4 and with weaker suppression efforts now easing. Grab a magazine and pick a chair…it’s going to be awhile.

Problem Florida has is that they are not doing tracing.

      • Anonymous says:

Also that their cases are well outpacing their ability to test them.

Problem Florida has is a RED problem.

        • Hubert says:

The Governor of Florida should be removed from office for disinformation. There is no coherent strategy in Florida and he says he wants teachers and students to return to school next month.

Today Florida has the largest number of cases ever, record hospitalizations and record deaths. They now have PPE shortages for doctors and nurses in Florida as the numbers are so high in the hospitals.

This is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE for America. More like a Third World country.

Cayman, if you ever think you have problems your problems are nothing compared to Florida today.

Bigger problem is that the Governor of Florida is not disclosing the full information on coronavirus cases. The Trumpite Governor is similar to a Governor in Putin’s Russia.

No human deaths, only business deaths. Soon come, living but without an economy. On this island covid only kills businesses.

So the more we open up, the less active cases. What a killer this virus turned out to be. 800 deaths, 1,000 cases.

Yet you forget soooo quickly that front line medical staff, grocery workers, and food truck staff – who were being cautious all fell victim (but felt ok to work) and would not have been diagnosed without testing.

Only time will tell. Other islands that opened too soon are now seeing cases rise again!!

One person infects many…please Super-wash your hands, keep your distance, and wear a mask!!

      Let’s keep each other safe….

It’s only killing the weakest, and most inflexible business models: those 100% reliant on non-resident traffic; those with zero retained earnings, nil collateral for the sweetheart loans being dispersed, and ego-blockage for the free professional re-tooling advice. There is probably a community benefit to clearing the market of pension-dodging employers and management teams that fail to prudently anticipate discontinuity in hurricane country. Sadly, our own government might be similarly impaired…hard to say for sure since they can’t themselves accept outside professional advice or maintain full, honest, and transparent public books.

So when can we stop wearing masks and we won’t risk infecting others?

We should be selling safety. Thousands of Americans (and others) are willing to spend vast sums to cone and shelter here. They are happy to quarantine to do so. Why are we not capitalizing on it?

I won’t be buying shares in this venture. I haven’t met a wealthy person who doesn’t like to do as the please and or receive superior service and quality meals. Not to mention the logistical nightmare. And yet, the majority agree with you. Speaks volumes.

There have been a lot of comments here about the surge in cases we are going to have since the restaurants and bars reopened. What say you now. Is it a bit like McLaughlins favourite refrain, just wait another 2 weeks? And why are we all still wearing masks when even the high risk cases the HSA are testing are coming up negative? Because they have a problem in Miami, which we are completely shut off from?

The whole population would have to be tested all at once. Surely you understand that. We don’t have that kind of testing capacity. So perhaps it is you who should shut up until you have a better understanding of how testing works.

That is obvious! Im just saying atleast when that has been done you can assume its okay. We are still wearing masks because the virus is still out there! You are assuming because the positives are only down to a few, you can resume acting like an idiot.

Ah yes, but if I was tested “ok” a month ago, but then decided to go to a Bar last weekend where no one was wearing a mask, I could be infected today- see?

The only way to be safe is to act safe! Soapy hand wash, social distance, wear a mask (please cover your nose too- shameful to see people in grocery stores with 1/2 mask “on”)

No, you shut up! I guess you’re one of these smart asses that are driving around with their masks on in the car. Who are you infecting? Your seat covers? I totally agree with the previous poster on his/her question about us having to wear masks when all testing are coming up negative. I have stopped wearing mine and I can’t wait for the time to come that we don’t have to put up with the harassment and whining coming from some of you mask wearing, so-called medical experts. Get on with your lives and stay home if you choose but, for the rest of us, life has to go on.

9:50 please shut the hell up Karen. It’s people like you that this island doesn’t need. It has been proven time and time again that wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing protocols assists in preventing infection.

Good luck getting service anywhere considering everywhere is enforcing wearing a mask.

          Idiot.

@ 7:11 pm – Got you going eh? The virus is here, it has been here and it’s not going anywhere so learn to live with it. And as for the island not needing people like me, thank God I was able to get out of there a few days ago. Fear is going to kill people like you, not corona.

Glad that there are no more positive results.

However, no none should confuse what the government reports as ‘active’ cases, with the number of infected/infectious people in the community. What the government refers to as an ‘active’ case is simply a positive PCR test result within the past 14 days.

We have no idea how many infected/infectious people are actually in the community, particularly with the declining testing levels and the idiocy in the bars.

The probability that it is zero is the same as the probability that it is 60,000. Somewhere closer to the middle of the curve is more likely – something like 300 – 500 infectious people based on the last time relevant sampling was done 3 weeks ago.

What plans have been made to deal with that issue? You know, things like reducing government expenditure, job creation programs for Caymanians, encouraging new industries, incentivizing solar projects, improving Cayman by creating cycle lanes, building needed storm defenses, paying people to plant trees and mangroves rather than sitting at home, setting up decent public transport systems….

This includes the $500,000,000 loan to keep paying the earned salaries of Government sponsored entitled ones long after private businesses go under. What is the plan for that or do you even care?
