(CNS): Over the two week period between 15 and 29 May, police issued 404 speeding tickets. As traffic has begun to increase, police clocked some rogue drivers doing more than 100mph, even though the top speed anywhere in Cayman is only 50mph. Speaking at Friday’s COVID-19 briefing, Police Commissioner Derek Byrne said speeding drivers are a major concern for the community here.

Many of these excessive speeders are being netted on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, Shamrock Road and along South Sound Road, Byrne noted.

“I remind all road users that speeding is a major contributing factor to serious injury and fatal traffic accidents,” he said.

The traffic problem for Cayman has continued for the traffic unit despite the curfew. Superintendent Adrian Seales said last week on a CIGTV video (see below) that at least one third of the registered vehicles here are now back on the road, as recorded by the number plate recognition system.

There have also been dozens of crashes during the curfew, including several very serious smashes, and in most cases speed was the cause.

The penalties begin with tickets and immediate fines of $20 for every mile per hour over the speed limit. However, drivers who are excessively over the limit can expect to pay a $500 fine and lose their licence for at least six months.

Despite the fines and an increase in speed-detection checkpoints across Grand Cayman, drivers continue to speed, putting their own and other drivers’ lives in danger.

I didn’t realize I was gong 38 on South Sound Road until a van flew past me. I slowed right down to 35 as another van flew by.
If I had a chance to see the company emblem, I would be broadcasting it here now. (not sure enough to say)

Employers, you must remember that your staff driving your service trucks are giving an impression of your company by their poor driving habits. Maybe time for a staff driving meeting.

I bought one myself so that I could exercise but now with the increased traffic and speeding I daren’t go on the road again for fear of being knocked off, time for bike lanes with protective barriers in place

Ticket bicyclists who ride on the sidewalks along West Bay Road and on Camana Bay/Britannia/Snug Harbour connector sidewalks. Ticker drivers using center lane of West Bay Road for passing.

Huh? How about we ticket DART public relations for no cyclist lanes/signage, and/or breach of NRA Agreement by ignoring NRA Road Plan?!?

We can’t do that. Mr. Dart wouldn’t like it! He could even cut out some of his donations.

That should clear the upcoming deficit.

Did anyone notice how bikes became very popular with reduced traffic? Seems all stores sold out. Just goes to show that people don’t fear bikes for exercise, they fear the poor driving standards and nutcases on Cayman roads.

We need proper bike lanes. Impressed rumble strips would be better than nothing at near zero cost. Let the bike community paint the lanes blue and stencil were approved. What Or who are we waiting for?

The NRA Board have collectively failed to execute the NRA Corporate Strategic Plan 2015-2020 and haven’t been challenged to explain themselves.

      https://www.caymanroads.com/documents/NRACorporateStrategicPlan2015-2020-20200302021517.pdf

The NRA Board are: Donovan Ebanks (Chair), Sheree Ebanks (Deputy Chair), David Arch (Member), John Ebanks (Member), Gary Clarke (Member), Kenross Connolly (Member), Joey Hew (Minister PLA), Stanley Panton (Member), Dane Walton (Member), Edward Howard (current acting Managing Director).

Paul Parchment (former Managing Director) was dismissed for cause in Jan 2018, but never charged for violations under sections of the National Roads Authority Law (2016).

Can the ACC/Ombudsman please explain why these officers aren’t held to account?!?

Where are the bike lanes that were promised?!?

The main reason lots of people speed and drive dangerously is the complete lack of law enforcement over many years. There is no fear of being caught so there is no fear for repercussions. The young racers have no fear and rule over every other poor soul that just wants to get where they are going without feeling like its a risk to life and limb. Keep bringing the pain to them and don’t stop in a week like usual. It is going to take a lot of training to get them to follow the laws of the road around here. Thank you for doing your part in keeping us all safe from each other.

The other day I witnessed some d***less wonder scream past Peanuts BK in a disgusting looking Toyota Tundra (I think) it was so messed up that it may have been something else. Gray with s**t green accents. Most definitely compensating for something else.

    Slow down truck boy 😉

Not to forget the truck drivers who constantly play chicken with you on the road. I have had to pull over to the far side of my lane many times to avoid being hit by these idiots who seem to feel that because they are driving larger vehicles they can do whatever they want to on the road.

Another person go in the wrong way into oncoming traffic from the roundabout all the way to that new CUC on shamrock/Red Bay Road. What is wrong with people on this island? That road has been changed for at least six months and they still can’t pay attention to arrows in the lane?!?!?

The best thing about this lock down is we haven’t been driving as much. Which is great because my life expectancy has suddenly gone up staying off these roads.

Congrats to getting some speeders but my suggestion is instead of having three cops cars to radar for speeders at one spot, have one cop car at three spots and catch more. Every time I leave my house I see at least 3 people driving dangerously near me. I highly doubt I’m the only one who has that happen.

What wrong with the road designers/engineers who can’t design a road that even a child would have no problems to navigate.
It is always the road designer’s fault. Always!!!!!
      Roads improvements must be foolproof.

What’s so confusing about the roads? Seriously there are arrows in the lane pointing at you with double lines on the side that you shouldn’t be crossed over. So you must’ve not passed your drivers test too…..who are these stupid commenters?

@1:12, I bet you can drive with your eyes closed, but not all of us so blessed. Some are 80 years old and some just got their license or new to the island.

There is such a thing as Road Design and here are 10 Principles of Good Road Design. Pay attention to #3

      1. makes roads safe and useful
      2. is inclusive
      3. makes roads understandable
      4. fits in context
      5. is restrained
      6. is thorough
      7. is environmentally sustainable
      8. is innovative
      9. is long-lasting
      10. is a collaborative process

Road design changes must be intelligent and save lives, not confuse drivers.

If a driver with 15 years experience in the US and no accidents confuses a roundabout with a flowerbed (yeah, there used to be that kind of roundabout by Fidelity bank off WB road and one more not far from the airport) then something is certainly wrong with the roundabout design and road improvements.

WTF are you going on about?Regardless of where you’re from, if you keep your eyes open and follow the speed limit I’m pretty sure you can drive just fine anywhere. Driving in the wrong lane when arrows are pointing at you is pretty freaking stupid. Can we know your name so can take your license away before you kill someone?

Break curfew, 3,000$ fine and maybe a year in jail if you upset the wrong person.

Go 100mph get major fine and get to go back on the road 6 months later.

Ban cars, time for a rail train on island. (Futuristic Sarcasm)

Slow down and drive carefully please, remember it is a weapon behind your hands.
