Local case and returnees push up COVID tally

| 29/06/2020 | 38 Comments

(CNS): Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported three new positive COVID-19 cases on Monday, as one local transmission and two returning travellers pushed the current tally up to 199. The three positive results came with 620 negative test samples from the screening programme conducted since Friday. But just one more locally acquired case in the batch means there have been just two community virus transmissions over the last week from 2,910 tests.

All three people are asymptomatic and join another six active but asymptomatic cases here. Cayman has now conducted 23,280 PCR tests.

There will be no COVID-19 briefings this week until Friday. Premier Alden McLaughlin said at the last update that “we have reached a point now where it is not necessary for us to have two press conferences every week”, and as the Legislative Assembly is sitting until Thursday, there will be only one televised update.

However, Dr Lee is expected to continuing releasing PCR test results on a daily basis. On Friday there will also be an update on the new antibody testing programme.

Provided there is no surge in positive test results this week, the premier is expected to detail further easing of remaining restrictions on Friday as Cayman moves towards a new normal, where masks, social distancing, hygiene protocols and common sense will be the main ways of keeping people safe from any lingering community transmission of COVID-19.

Jersey (pop 110,000 in the U.K. Channels Islands) has declared its virus free. It will be interesting to see what happens there as they are planning to open their borders.

Notice how most of the positives these days are returning travelers? And yet, there are people on this site begging for us to completely open up to tourists, including American tourists, immediately. Then ever sacrifice we’ve made so far and all the progress we’ve made will have been for nothing. We’d be complete fools to open up to Americans until at least December and maybe not even then.

How many people in cayman have died from covid 19? Do some research, it isnt dangerous for 99.9% of people. Old and sick can self isolate.

No I don’t notice, the numbers have never been presented in a transparent manner. How many from Canada? How many from the US? How many from the U.K.? What are the age groups who have caught covid? We are already complete fools for having no plan and no transparency. Now, I know 199 people are a 199 is a massive amount of people for our current government to keep a track of. All I’m hoping is we still have a Cayman in May 2021. Money goes where it is taken care of. How many persons own investment real estate in Cayman and are not allowed access to their properties? Do you think they are happy customers? Such people create jobs go as well. I would understand you if we even had a dozen deaths, much less the 800 predicted. But a big fat zero added to the fact we all know original models were false should create some reality for you.

Well since Covid-19 is certain to be around for years to come, why don’t we just shutdown permanently to avoid immunizing the public, or at east until we have a tested and proven vaccine in 2025?

Because: “Then ever sacrifice we’ve made so far and all the progress we’ve made will have been for nothing. We’d be complete fools to open up to Americans until at least December and maybe not even then.”

Cayman positive for Covid-19 almost 200….People with so much as the sniffles as a result? ZERO Ziltch, Nada. That’s a rate of 0.00% people sick of covid-19

So why not close for the next few years? Brilliant Plan!

Round of applause to the f*ing masterminds around this economic destruction!

The writer is merely extrapolating the argument of the paranoid who have no explanation or understanding of why we have no deaths! Remember 800? So those who mock him are merely mocking themselves. Only they are too stupid to figure it out.

In reflection watching all of this, I think I owe an apology for commenting on here before stating that this whole hysterical Covid-19 panicdemic would be the biggest nothing-burger of all time over the “sniffles”.

Well I officially apologize because it wasn’t even as serious as the sniffles.

But we sure did a number on people income and livelihoods… the perfect government sponsored economic shit storm!

The fact that you’re a Trumphole means you are untrustworthy. And by the way… the federal government took the lead in the 9/11 response, not the individual states. Trump let this happen so that idiots like you could point to the fact that Trump isn’t to blame for the absolute mess in the United States – it’s the governors!

4;10pm Just leave Trump out of it. He is President of the USA. You should be concerned with your own country. Well, if it’s your country, then you should be there fixing all the problems. He has nothing to do with our country.

8:51, Certainly wIsh we could leave Trump out of it here in the Cayman Islands. Bet Canada wishes the same thing with their neighbor too. However, living next to a very sick 800 lb gorilla that is out of control, with no idea what to do about the coronavirus, we have no choice.

The coronavirus knows no boundaries and whether we like it or not, Trump today has everything to do with our problems here. Just look at Florida today where we get 90% of our food supplies from.

I’m not American and couldn’t care less about Trump! However, I’m flattered that Trump actually let this all happen so that I can absolve him of all sins. Must be my five minutes of fame.

And 11:22 that is precisely the problem. We have 50 Governors trying to invent the wheel when one Federal authority should be coordinating a national plan on how to deal with the coronavirus. To say that counties should make the decisions on how to deal with coronavirus is insanity. As Pence said today, “local people should be making decisions”.

Matters are now rapidly escalating out of control. Dr. Fauci today said that we will soon be looking at 100,000 deaths a day. While Trump continues his happy talk.

America, we are screwed and we can all thank Donald Trump for dereliction of duty.

Lucky…. What a clownish statement. Viruses don’t operate on luck! Nor do they really give a shit about your ridiculous masks.

Have a REAL viral outbreak and see how good those stupid masks protect you. Ware one of those idiotic masks in one of the biological research centers that study deadly viruses and see how you come out.

All these masks are good for is an exercise in conformity. They don’t jack shit for viral outbreak.

The reason there is no one sick is because this virus isn’t affecting anyone down here. Not because of your stupid masks or your dumbass measures.

What a stupid comment. This virus travels by droplets that naturally come out of your mouth every time you talk, shout or even sing. By covering your face, you reduce droplets and therefore, reduce spreading the virus.

Wrong. He did not die of a heart attack. He went to the hospital with a cardiac condition and died 8 days later. Chances are, COVID-19 caused the heard condition.

I love you write with authority and end with “chances are”. In other words, you have no clue! Also heart is spelt with a “t” not a “d”.

So if you are not worried about your numbers inching up….open your borders. Most people who have Covid are asymptotic. What’s the big deal? Just allow tourists in under age 65…..with no previous health issues.

Could have tested them and know the returnees had it days ago.
Same flight had cases when they dropped people in TCI.

Yes, 5:08 pm, I noticed that TCI now has 13 new cases, bringing their total cases to 41. They had been holding at surprisingly low numbers for a while.

I don’t know if you are correct that those new cases have resulted from the flight you referenced, but one should be concerned that only some 647 tests as at today have been carried out in a population of about 36,000 plus. That seems troubling to me.
