Government of National Unity approval rating

| 01/06/2020 | 63 Comments

(CNS): We are now less than a year away from the 2021 General Elections, and while the Government of National Unity has been working under extreme stress over the last few months, it has also had three years to put its policies in place. How well individual Cabinet members and ministry councillors have performed during the current crisis may well colour their overall approval rating, but this survey is intended to cover the whole of the last three years.

It is important to remember that we elect our representatives to act on our behalf in good times and bad. The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique situation but a crisis in the form of a hurricane could strike us any year. We expect government to rise to any occasion and each minister must be prepared to manage the fallout of any disaster, as well as improve the work of their ministry and all the departments within their responsibility under normal circumstances.

The following poll is not a scientific survey but a snapshot of public opinion, and will remain open for one week. It should take under a minute to complete.

Take the survey here.

Results of the survey so far can be found here.

Good job on high jacking the survey. We can see through the bullshit. Fake!!!

  2. Caymanian Kakistocracy says:

Kakistocracy: A system of government that is run by the worst, least qualified and/or most unscrupulous citizens.

The current UNITY government led by Alden McLaughlin with such luminaries in Cabinet including Joey Hew, Dwayne Seymour, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Moses Kirkconnell, Tara Rivers and the highly paid bobble heads on the government backbench Austin Harris, David Wight, Eugene Ebanks and Barbara Connolly are best described as members of the Cayman Kakistocracy.

They all need to be voted out in 2021.

Really now..how come this survey has all of a sudden switched to increase the government’s ratings?

Anyone looking at this now will know that it is flawed and someone is working the system..

With Today’s news John Johns rating should be zero…

How Tara gets more than 1 star is beyond me. By her inability or lack of desire to make decisions she is coming very close to single-handedly destroying the Financial Services industry here in Cayman She is incompetent to put it mildly.

Stop being such a hater. That is not true and you know it, as you seem to know what is really going on. Stop trying to make her a scapegoat for your own agenda. She is both competent and capable, and has demonstrated this on numerous occasions. Unfortunately people like you will always be blind to that fact though in your quest to demonise her for your own political agenda perhaps?

Not a hater, just a realist from my viewpoint which is consistent with much of the FS industry. I’m concerned for the future of the FS industry here. Tara’s actions illustrate that she does not appear to be up to dealing with these matters in a decisive manner – 38 days late for the law after 12 months notice from the EU and you say she’s competent? All the other jurisdictions managed it, her Ministry didn’t. I’m not saying she’s the only one at fault in Government, far from it, but its her Ministry so she is front and centre in this whole debacle, and its still ongoing and she does not appear to want to make the decisions that she needs to make. I hope she proves me wrong.

Again speaking from your vantage point only. Much of industry supports Tara and understands the untenable position she, the Government and the country was put in. The 12 month notice you refer to was in fact only 6 months given the lateness on the part of the EU to publish it’s own guidance of what it wanted. Not the mention the incessant infighting among the same financial services industry you claim to speak for. If you are honest with yourself – and the public – you will admit how greed and self interest plagues the entire process.

Her performance has been untenable. We were given an OECD deadline, and several well-published reminders of its approaching expiry!! Her most important job…failed!

So why was she 38 days late for the law? We never received an explanation.

        • Anonymous says:

She simply is not on top of issues in her area of responsibility.

      • Anonymous says:

With a known deadline, and for the first time EVER, we have actually been put on the OECD Blacklist because of the Unity Government, and Tara Rivers as Finance Minister. Her “wait and see” approach to Fintech regulation led to a headline multi-Billion dollar initial coin fraud, and there are a dozen virtual coin laundering exchanges operating from the Cayman Islands. That’s clueless.

If you are going to jump on the “criticise Tara and the Unity Government” bandwagon, at least try to get your facts straight (although your mish mash criticism makes your motives clear). Cayman is not on any OECD blacklist. In fact, Cayman was deemed the highest level of compliance by the OECD accotding to its economic substance standards. Caymsn is on the EU blacklist for tax purposes – a list solely determined by EU politicians, so try arguing that the list itself is not political (much less valid or justifiable).

Tara Rivers is the most useless Minister of Financial Services ever. Being on the EU blacklist is her fault. The buck stops with her. Also two law firms think she is doing a good job because she is their puppet.

Too bad she could not meet the EU deadline. I would say incompetent and incapable because she missed such an important deadline for Cayman’s financial services industry. You know it too.

    • Anonymous says:

You are putting it mildly. She has no idea what she is doing. She makes a decision at 10 and changes it at 10.15 then reverts to the original decision at 10.30. I do not understand how the Government is sitting by and letting her mess around with our financial industry.

How is it that when she managed to steer the entire Economic Substance process through in 2018, actively involving ALL sectors of the FS industry, resulting in Cayman not being placed on the blacklist in 2019 (when it was clear that the EU wanted to do so then like they did to Bermuda), no one acknowledged her leadership in that respect. Yet when the issue was focussed on funds in 2019, the industry players themselves behaved like ravaged dogs trying to hoard or grab as much of the business for themselves, instead of coming together for the greater good of the country as a whole. So forgive me if I’m not convinced by your concern for the financial services industry more than just how it lines your own pocket.

One of the (many) tragic/inept recurring problems with each successive regime is that few if any of them are certified scuba divers. They really have no appreciation for the rich biodiversity that exists underwater in the Cayman Islands, or how it’s different from any other destination, and why that is. I can’t recall a Minister of Tourism that has been active, let alone suitably credentialed, to knowledgeably market the industry.

Nothing illustrates this more than the recent comments from the Premier (on behalf of the entire emergency curfew committee) in regards to these so-called “shared” scuba diving items.

Even if two divers were performing an emergency buddy-breathing SURFACE ASSENT/RESCUE, the shared breathing apparatus would be from a pristine spare yellow octopus that nobody had preciously in anyone’s mouth.

From memory the Premier said that no diving at this stage was the view of the Chief Medical Officer and the reasons given were that of the CMO. During a medical pandemic the CMO wields considerable authority. He may talk softly but Dr Lee ‘carries a big stick’.

Alden has gained some respect from me where before there was none because of his response to the Pandemic. I do not however trust him with other areas of government, Namely his push for the port and his disregard for other environmental matters. Sorry but one right does not fix all the wrongs. And I will be voting according in the next elections.

Alden is just one of the panelists on the Governor’s emergency powers and curfew orders Committee. The direction of this collaborative effort is mostly due to the persuasive efforts of Dr Lee. Alden can think it’s his idea if he wants to, but we should know this is the gov’s show right now.

Corruption is driven from both a demand and supply side from eager buyers and sellers. To change the equation, we’d need to have a rigorous compliance apparatus in place, with multiple anonymous reporting channels, and we’d need to start making some critical high level arrests – especially if we intend to get off the global naughty lists. A toothless SIPL Law overseen by political appointees, doesn’t inspire much confidence. If we fail our next FATF/CFATF report, having ignored their recurring critiques, we will have the Unity regime to (again) blame for the inaction.

Do the results suggest that Roy McTaggart might be the best person to take over the leadership of the party when Alden goes into retirement?

Roy has been a disappointment….started with the crap about the pension only being underfunded if everyone retires now….expected a little more than cash based bookkeepping from him. Then championing work permit driven surplus even though the laws and regulations being circumvented and abused are same ones that gave him the opportunity to do so well at KPMG.

Sure, they are ALL disappointments. Differentiating in this jurisdiction is simply a function of celebrity/infamy/relative competency over the also ran next to them. It’s a weak field. Wayne Panton needs to form a proper grownup party that people could get behind.

How did Joey Hew become Premier Alden’s choice to lead the party over qualified candidates like Roy McTaggart and Tara Rivers? Joey Hew is not qualified to lead and has as much qualifications as McKeeva Bush who is surrounded by scandals. Both are self serving arrogant knob ends that enjoy the high life on the public dime while achieving nothing. Hew is exactly like Bush all flash with zero depth.

Hi CNS, I trust all is well? Any reason why the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were not included in the poll?

CNS: Because they are not members of government or the opposition, i.e. they do not dictate or oppose government policy – or the position of speaker is not supposed to anyway. The deputy speaker is included in the poll in her capacity if ministry councillor, not as DS.

    • Anonymous says:

CNS it would still be useful and informative to see what the speaker rated since the poll is in reference to the upcoming election. I presume the speaker has to run like everyone else, don’t recall any tradition that he stands unopposed.

CNS: There’s a whole year to go. I promise that the speaker will appear in a survey or two before then. I have not included any MLAs outside of government except for the current and previous leaders of the opposition.

a)spending peoples money to fight the people’s referendum and force through an unnecessary but lucrative port contract for nefarious and self interested reasons
    b) open immigration policy for anyone that could pay
    c) continual “successful” trips to defend Cayman’s financial industry quickly followed by new enactment of international sanctions or punitive regulations
    d) remaining silent on public assault of a woman
    e) refusal to share in the economic suffering of the people by taking a pay cut
    ….I’m thinking FAIL.
