(CNS): One more person has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported Tuesday. This single additional case has brought Cayman’s ongoing tally of positives to exactly 200 out of the 23,750 tests that have been carried out. The individual was picked up in the test screening and is asymptomatic, officials confirmed.

There are now just eight active cases of the coronavirus in Cayman and all of those individuals are asymptomatic. They are all in isolation alongside another 56 individuals who have either returned from overseas and are in government quarantine facilities or contacts of positive cases at home.

While Cayman’s record in suppressing, testing and contact tracing is now one of the best in the world, creating what the governor has described as a “safe bubble”, concerns now switch to the cases raging in the United States. The level of the virus there is now undermining any possible relaxation of the border closure here next month.

Many countries, particularly in Europe, who are lifting border restrictions to travellers now are not doing so for the United States. Cayman’s tourism product is very heavily dependent on the US market but given the lack of management of the pandemic there, opening our borders to American visitors would undermine the significant sacrifice and cost that has been endured in Cayman to save lives.

On Tuesday America faced another day of surges in COVID-19 cases in southern and western states. The death toll climbed to almost 127,000 people as the crisis deepens, with 2.67 million people having tested positive for COVID-19, accounting for a quarter of the world’s 10.3 million cases.

Dr Anthony Fauci, a leading health official in the US, told a congressional committee on Tuesday that there were around 40,000 new cases per day at present but that could increase to 100,000 unless work is done to address the surge.

“I’m very concerned about what’s going on right now, particularly in the four states that are accounting for about 50 percent of the new infections,” Fauci told the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. “”I’m very concerned, because it could get very bad,” he said.

The four worst states are Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.

Work from home people are now returning to crowded offices for no other reason than to restore their bosses ego. Meetings are being held with no regard for social distancing. The pandemic is over.

Or just starting because of irresponsible business owners and young people who want to get their party on.

Current total cases is only 8. All asymptomatic. That is only a 0.03% infection rate. So why the need for continued restrictive measures domestically. We should all be able to live freely once again.

I love how some on this site bash those whom they deem to be conspiracy theorists, while at the same time supporting our harsh actions, no plan, Premier, who has said maybe we have a different strain of the virus. Wow, we must be special. Worldwide, even Florida, the more people that get tested by default younger people are getting tested and low and behold, asymptomatic numbers increase while deaths level off. Of course, persons are going to jump on the 3 to 5 areas where deaths are rising and ignoring global numbers without understanding what phase those 3 to 5 areas are in. The fact is global daily deaths are way down from the peak of April 30th. Deaths now total 512k. That puts covid on par this year with malaria and suicides. Doubters can find the information on worldometers.info Health. 2,497,565 deaths this year from smoking. 1,249,573 from alcohol. Turns out, we should shut the bars and open the airport.

God knows we don’t need to open up to ANYWHERE in the USA and should be very cautious and selective to which countries we do, when we do. I hope they don’t rush it anyway.

If they can get our local/internal economy safely up and running good again, we will just have to wait for the international factors, which we no doubt need, to come back on line.

Government will have to start taking some serious and drastic measures of frugality and other financial strategies to make up for shortfalls, as best they can, in the interim. But our successive Governments always resort to the same old revenue- raising measures, so I know what to expect – increase duties, in crease gas tax, increase liquor tax, increase cigarette tax, charge more for licensing vehicles, etc., etc. Higher cost of living for Cayman residents!!

Going forward, I hope the pandemic effects teach them and any successors to stop waiving millions of duties and other fees for rich companies and other influence peddlers and squirrel-away every nut!!

Looking at the stats for Canada on the coronavirus, not sure why we don’t let Canadians in from September 1 as long as Canadians are coming in on direct flights from Toronto.

But keep Americans out from Florida and Texas as things there now are rapidly heading towards a health care catastrophe due to 2 stupid Governors who are terrified of Trump and do not want to get tough.
