One more front-liner COVID positive

(CNS): From a batch of 297 tests, mostly screening samples, one more front-line worker has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, Medical Officer of Health Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez revealed Friday. He said the person had no symptoms but had been isolated and the contact tracing had begun. With another 296 negative samples, continuing the optimistic trend, Dr Williams-Rodriguez said it was expected that some positives would emerge during screening.

Standing in for Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee, Dr Williams-Rodriguez also revealed that several more previously positive patients for the virus had recovered, increasing the total to 41. In total, Cayman has now tested 3,423 people, with 81 tests proving positive. There are now 40 active cases; only eight of those people are showing any symptoms and are recovering at home or in government quarantine facilities.

There are 29 asymptomatic patients plus two patients that remain at Health City Cayman Islands, who, although have tested positive for COVID-19, are admitted for other health problems. There are no coronavirus patients at the government hospital or CTMH Doctors Hospital. Cayman has seen only one fatality from coronavirus, which was ‘patient zero’, who arrived in Cayman from a cruise whip with the virus suffering from serious cardiac health problems.

Everyone remains hopeful that the virus, while clearly still here, is not spreading widely and the hospitals will continue to manage any future patients who become ill.

But an overflow field hospital is now ready and waiting at the Family Life Centre, just in case the country does face an unexpected surge. Describing the field hospital as “beautiful”, Dr Williams-Rodriguez said everyone had done a great job setting it up, but given the current trend, it will probably not be needed. He said it was part of the strategic plan in case there was a large outbreak and the George Town and Health City hospitals were not able to cope.

Premier Alden McLaughlin said the hope is that these facilities will not be needed because that means the government strategy had worked incredibly well.

Noting “the number of deaths, not just worldwide but in… areas that are close to us”, the premier said that for weeks he had a recurring dream that he was Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York State, announcing the latest death count.

McLaughlin said that we haven’t had that in Cayman because government had taken swift and difficult decisions to protect the health and welfare of the people.

Wow, you right-wing nuts sure visit some dark places!! With your “deep state” conspiracies and other bull-shit – sheep mentality for warped sickos like Trump, Limbaugh, Hannity, Carlson, Ingraham, Judge Jeanine, Bannon. Wake up and get a life in the real world!!

As an experiment, try to watch other news than your mind-programmed Fox; try to read other stuff than your right wing, conspiracy-driven senseless shit. Try doing this even for a few days and see if you’ll come back to reality!!

I am so glad that my wife and I recently got out of there, but we are still both are very concerned about the people we care about who we left behind. Has it occurred to any of you that not only is no one dying in Cayman, but many also have no symptoms at all? The Cayman population is overwhelmingly young and gets lots of sunlight. It is May in the tropics. (Vitamin D and zink have been linked to mild or asymptomatic cases). Hawaii is also experiencing very few serious cases, and Florida has far fewer cases than the northeast in spite of having a larger population and larger percentage of elderly than New York State. If you look at the numbers it is pretty clear that the more southernly the location, the fewer and milder the cases. The “first case”, an elderly non Caymanian who probably had only been in the tropics a short while, also probably died of the heart attack (not his first) that brought him ashore. Please end this madness before the average Caymanian loses everything. The longer this goes on, the more clear it is that this virus is not very deadly and that the numbers do not justify the extreme measures that have been imposed.

Sadly, this unscientific, borderline schizophrenic experiment with people’s lives will destroy physical health of thousands and leave many, especially children with PTSD for life.
Is everyone, including highly educated people, under some sort of evil spell? Unfathomable.

Yes, only people who watch Fox News, know what’s really going on, that this was all part of a Deep State plot to gain control of people with an evil spell. Thanks for letting us know. I see where Alex Jones says he’s going to kill and eat his neighbours to feed his children when the food runs out. Are you biting on that, too?

Yes I watch CNN, but also BBC, MSNBC and the US and Canadian channels available, and even Al Jazeera. It gives me a broad spectrum of news and the way it’s presented so that I can make an independent and informed judgement. I also watch Fox for comparison. I bet you Fox-lovers don’t comparison-watch! Only Fox’s reporting is selective and skewed at best, and absolutely false at worse. So they are the real fake news and those who swear by them are brainwashed sheep!! Remember Trump’s favourite “news” magazine is the National Enquirer, by his own admission during his last campaign – what does that say about his own intelligence and those who believe in him??

And yes I stay at home generally but when I have to go out to buy food I don’t want to encounter you careless and don’t give a s**t types. So if you don’t care about the reality of this virus then you stay home and let the rest of us be safer!!

I too watch fox from time to time just to make sure I’m well informed and they are horrible. I agree CNN can be a bit scewd as well at times, but I’m not sure that it’s actually scewd as I have seen the live broadcasts of Trumps propoganda and their depiction is accurate.

Today, at Hurley’s, idiot guy, Caymanian in his 30s, purposely pushing his cart down the opposition way the arrows are pointing, not staying 6’ away or stopping for anybody, mask pulled off his face around his neck, smirking at the people who were giving him dirty looks. Everything about him was saying “screw you people, I am Caymanian and nobody is going to tell me what to do on my island. This, folks, is why reasonable, respectful people – Caymanians and expats alike – have to suffer with this lockdown. Alden won’t say it, but it’s the only way to control a good portion of his own people and he knows it.

Cayman Islands Active Cases peaked recently at 63 May 02-03, and with resolved, are now down to 42. Not ideal, but not terrible either. We need to keep at it. Get those Active Cases recategorized to Resolved, and local transmission discoveries down to close to zero.

We need the ticketing officers (already being paid) to be addressed by CoP with a clearer set of public enforcement orders and start writing tickets outside and inside the exempted supply stores. Essential staff exemption applies only to curfew travel; it’s not a coverall exemption from the 6 foot regulations inside and outside the store (cops included!).

The CMO indicated some front-line workers are refusing the COVID-19 test. This is preposterous, considering they’re in contact with the most vulnerable. This behavior could result in death, and should be dealt with accordingly! 😡

Listen all you skeptics, Fox (Faux) News and Trump believers, borderline morons (perhaps all one and the same) – Covid 19 kills! Ok?!

Just because we’ve had only one death and many people haven’t become critically ill doesn’t mean you can disregard the spread of the virus and ignore the common-sense measures in effect.

To ALL the unbelievers – just stay the f**k home until coronavirus is no longer on this island. I, for one, don’t want you and your type risking MY health!!

Congrats to CIG on everything they’ve done and I hope they don’t consider fully re-opening our economy locally until there is scientific evidence that the virus has been crucially minimized or eradicated here.

Greed should not drive any decisions related to this pandemic!!

“Fake news”. God give me strength.

It is pitiful that we judge people here in Cayman by the shouty American news channels we accuse them of watching. CNN, Fox, CBS, MSNBC etc aren’t news channels at all, but rather entertainment shows riffing off current affairs and teeming with improbably pneumatic and beautiful women and serious, handsome men with big salt and pepper hair. They’re not journalists, just plausible loudmouths. Only Americans are stupid enough to watch any of them, let alone take them seriously.

Oh wait a moment, you’re an American, yes?

The 2 positives at Health City. Were they known to be positive at admittance? Have all the staff working with them been tested & retested (I mean all the staff / right down to the cleaners). Are they in an isolation ward? Are the new positives related to these patients or close contacts (ie hospital staff)?

Every day, because a test is only valid at the moment you take it.
That’s why the mantra must be ‘testing, testing, testing’.
But it ain’t gonna happen, so keep listening to the fake messages of hope coming from HSA.
And is our ‘beautiful’ field hospital anything like Trumps ‘beautiful’ tests, because if it is, we’re screwed?

Every 17 minutes is the globally accepted standard.

Yes. They get tested every five minutes. Satisfied? Oh and by the way, no staff have died. That fact can only be by the grace of God or due to the fact that catching the virus does not guarantee death. My apologies for the dose of reality.

They are not retested every five minutes. They are not tested daily like Trump and it is not mandatory.

      • Anonymous says:

The grace of god? Seriously people if your god had any grace at all don’t you think he would of stopped the virus already? I’m so sick of people saying “oh let’s pray” as if it is a cure all for what ails you. I guess having your faith is what helps you through these times but it is not a replacement for common sense. If you want a dose of reality stop looking for it in a so called god and start taking responsibility for your actions. You can’t pray Coronavirus away.
