Date set for 2021 General Elections

| 22/05/2020 | 93 Comments

(CNS): Cayman Islands voters will go to the polls in twelve months time on Wednesday, 26 May 2021, a date that has now been confirmed by the Governor’s Office. However, it is still not known if the referendum on the government’s cruise port project will also take place that day, as urged by the Cruise Port Referendum activists.

The 2021 elections will be the second General Election to be held under the ‘one person, one vote’ system with single-member electoral districts.

“The Cayman Islands has a proud history of fair, well run democratic elections with high levels of voter participation,” said Governor Martyn Roper. “I am confident that the Elections Office will continue this practice in the 2021 General Election.”

Candidates will contest seats 19 seat, as defined by 2015 Electoral Boundary Commission’s report, which can be seen in the CNS Library, together with the 2021 General Election Programme.

The date for the cruise port referendum was originally set for 19 December 2019. However, CPR member Shirley Roulstone, supported by the National Trust, successfully challenged the law which set out this date.

The CPR group has said that the most obvious date to have the referendum would be on the same day as the election, which would combine both the logistics and the expense.

Check back to CNS for more on the 2021 elections next week.

A picture says a thousand words. The map of the 19 constituencies shows how absurd the system is.

Should be one general election end of story. Otherwise we get idiots with fewer than 300 votes getting elected. Some even becoming Ministers!

Good God, man! Have you seen the state of UK politics?
All we need is a break from the Lodge, term limits and a minimum education requirement.
I forgot to mention an annual vote of confidence to smash these idiots who abuse the trust given to them. You know who you are.

The implementationof the UK system is the problem.
With this undemocratic division in to tiny segments and “winner takes all” is what make Johnson PM with less then 50% of voters voting for him.
      .
In a democracy the majority rules, not a minority that tweeks the system.

The shocker will be a PPM victory. They have no real competition. Old men like Blizzard Roy Bodden Arden Gilbert are all pass their prime and have nothing to offer this leading financial Center. Young bloods like Moxam and other CPR relics have no idea how to win an election. They can’t even hold their own members to account. If you cant hold yourself and others to account how can you be accountable to others.

Folks If your claim to fame is potentially taking food out of thousands of Caymanians mouths, ruining our education system, giving speeches about King Solomon, being named president for life by a failing educational institution and moving out of your electoral district. You have already loss the Election. Saunders who have fooled no one and those who you speak ill of behind their back know your every word. Public servants learned a long time ago that loyalty to a political rather than your boss is a stupid move.

If you need a taste of what a mess we will be in should the Opposition win. Watch the First 30 min of the LA meeting last week and the rambling statement issued after.

You have to feel sorry for Bernie who was paid to be deputy Speaker for 3 years yet never once sat in the Chair. Barbara earned her pay after 30 days on the job and was flawless in the execution of her duties.

This is the master plan all along so the Premier and his current group of yes people stay in power and the Governor will go along with whatever they tell him to do. They still have themselves and all the goverment workers on full (why couldn’t they take a pay cut across the board as loads of us have no pay) pay yet nothing is getting done and businesses are folding. Going to get construction and repairs open – try getting a exemption letter from this curfew time department. The press briefings have turned into no more than a big pat on each other’s back for what a great job they are all doing. This is a dictatorship and police state!

Oh wait maybe you mean the folks in the planning department or in WoRC who are busy refusing work permits or the officers in CBC. Oh wait you mean the garbage collectors or the civil servants running the isolation facilities. oh wait you mean the prison officers and the community care workers who are caring for the elderly. oh wait you mean the staff in health Ministry or NeOC who are overseeings the entire islands pandemic response. oh wait maybe the post office staff who you couldn’t do without. Get my point. We should be giving civil servants a raise. That’s how you revive the economy.

Panton is just as much of a disappointment as the rest. The only time he would interact with constituents was then election time was approaching. Shake a few hands, hand out a few life vests, and gone again until they next election. The Government needs new people who genuinely care for everyone in the community, not just looking out for their own agendas.

10:22 Yes, they all have their offices but many are “too busy” to take appointments. Maybe MLAs could play a more active role within their communities instead of just nearer to election time. Check on your constituents and not just when it suits you. That is just my interpretation of the above comment.

I would vote for Panton because he cares about the environment and issues surrounding the issue. The rest do not have a clue about environmental legislation.

Give me the chance to vote for Mr. Archer…Mr. Panton…individuals of character that care for their country and its people. Good – now… lets get rid of those damn single member “West Kingston” constituencies and the deeply flawed, “winner-take-all” First Past The Post electoral system.

    PLEASE:

    @ Multi-seat constituencies
    ## 15 seats in multi-seat constituencies spread through out the islands (5 or 6 constituencies in total, with 3/4/5 seats per constituency)
    ## 4 seats in a single, all 3 islands wide, “super-constituency”

@Voters to be able to vote in their local multi-seat constituency AND/OR in the all islands wide constituency

@Proportional Representation – any of the many forms will do!

Get rid of the so-called “OMOV” disaster, hermetically sealed, troglodyte, petri-dishes where the worst excesses of “democracy” are foisted upon us.

We need real choices and not just recycling of the same men/women who are best prepared for the past – not our future.

But if you did that it would make it extremely hard or prohibitively expensive to buy your seat? Or to play to local prejudices -no Sister Islands versus the world, West Bay versus GT, Bodden Town against the Dump. And Moses wouldnt be able to guarantee his seat anymore by lining up all the Brackers dependent on his family. You must be very brave or stupid to make such a suggestion.

A national vote is appropriate. One man one vote is a disaster for these Islands. Instead we should each have 15 votes, and have every member directly accountable to all of us (not just the one in our district). It would also likely raise the overall quality of our representation.

We don’t need an amateur casting call, or anyone that has been, or expects, a full lifetime career on public politics easy street. We need seasoned business leaders who are willing to serve their country competently, with integrity, full transparency, in a new political era where good governance of public funds matters – and where corruption is reported and punished without secret settlements paid. There needs to be an Opposition shadow government, a ban on private caucus sneakery, and LA debate fueled by consultation from constituents. Dare to dream!
