(CNS) UPDATED: Police have now revealed that the George Town man they are looking for who threatened officers with a machete and attacked them with pepper spray on Wednesday is Simon Julio Newball (43). Police are now asking the public to help police track him down.

Newball is around 5 feet 6 inches tall, slim build with a light brown complexion. He is believed to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public.

He is wanted on suspicion of threats to kill, possession of a restricted weapon and other offenses relating to the incident yesterday,

Anyone who sees him is encouraged to call 911 immediately.

Newball is accused of fleeing from police at an address off Walkers Road after they were sent to the location in response to a report. When they arrived at the location, a man who is suspected to be Newball attempted to obstruct the officers in their duties.

It is not clear what type of report the police were responding to, but Newball was said to have brandished a machete and pepper spray then assaulted officers with the spray before fleeing the location.

The RCIPS said the affected officers have undergone decontamination, and efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend the man.

Most Cayman judges have been unserious about violent criminals for years. This is one of the results.

It’s concerning that trained police officers, who have undergone pepper spray exposure, or should have, were taken so unaware and unprepared to fight back. Oleo-capsicum is nasty, it burns and hurts like hell. But officers need to be able to fight through in case of self contamination and not only adequately defend themselves, but also able to overcome an attacker. This could have ended an lot worse for these officers considering it would appear that they were immediately incapacitated.
From personal experience, RCIPS training is based upon ensuring low standards are the normal level of qualification because they are training less than adequate candidates in the first place.
Stop hiring the mediocre and raise the bar, competent training saves lives.

@ 10.34 I have it on good authority that officers don’t get exposed to pepper spray in training now. So they have no idea how to ‘fight through it’.

And I rest my case. To not expose officers is just plain stupid. Different people respond to OC spray in different ways. How the hell will they ever learn their own tolerance unless they experience exposure.
Another example of a snowflake mentality at the top. Get a grip and toughen up Chief!!!

Read the Yolanda Forde report and you will understand many of these men and women from that generation.

Some of you self-righteous people would never understand others.

CNS: The link you left didn’t work but the report is in the CNS Library here.

Can you summarize your view based on that report, 8:18, on the issue of understanding “many of these men and women from that generation”?. I suspect it would help people if you did because reports like the Forde Report tend to be big on the whole “society failed them/fall through the cracks ” scenario so prominent in our western liberal world.

The capital G is wrong here; teacher is a common noun and grammar is a regular adjective. The ellipses are unnecessary.

Newball has been in and out of prison for over 30yrs.
He is one of the worst crimals in the Cayman Islands.
He is renowned for assualting law enforcement officers.
He is known to carry a firearm and isn’t scared of using it.
He also allegedly has committed some very serious crimes which unfortunately there wasn’t enough evidence which would have given him a life sentence.

I usually don’t say this but there are the occasional person that doesn’t belong on this planet and he is one of them. He survived a shotgun shot to his face and of course the police and medical staff saved him, but of course he hasn’t changed.

Not the smartest criminal, he always goes back to his mother’s when wanted in the early hours of the morning, his mother has never and will never hand him over and protects him.

He’s a nasty piece of work, if you see him, just call the police and leave.

I think they’ll probably put him in long term storage after this one. And yes, a condom would have helped 43 years ago. Let’s make those more available to would be single-moms and their deadbeat absentee fathers. Why are those still locked behind the counter?

Can you substantiate that claim, 2:58? Or is it just the usual “society did not blah blah blah”? I ask as an old teacher who tried to help him from his very early primary school days and found him to be unusually vicious, disruptive and unresponsive to help at an age when children are not usually like that but I could not discern that his background was any worse or even as bad as many many other children at that time.

700 plus curfew tickets, prosecutions, and arrests for “crimes” such as paddle boarding alone outside ones home or visiting a loved one in hospital… its hard for me to have much sympathy for these officers when we are forced to live in a police state with arbitrary and capricious infringements on our rights, zero accountability, and no plan

If the Governor and Commissioner don’t come to their senses soon, I think this unfortunate incident will foreshadow far more tragic events…. people are financially destroyed, hungry, and getting desperate
