Opposition throws Bryan out

MLA Kenneth Bryan defends his position on Rooster, 5 March 2020

(CNS): The official opposition has thrown MLA Kenneth Bryan (GTC) out of the group after he refused to support the rest of the members in their efforts to convene a special meeting of the Legislative Assembly. Despite calls by the public for House Speaker McKeeva Bush to resign over his admission of a violent assault while drunk at a beach bar last month, Bryan has stymied the opposition’s move to force government to come to the LA and address the multiple issues that have arisen from the speaker’s behaviour.

In a press release issued Thursday, the opposition said the meeting was needed to debate the implications of the speaker’s statement on 24 February, where he announced that he would take a leave of absence, after apologising for the incident to his victim and others. He also admitted that he is dealing with alcohol problems as a result of lingering mental health issues that he has failed to address.

But the opposition has echoed comments by MLA Ezzard Miller, who was the first to call for an emergency session of parliament. They agreed with the North Side member that there are constitutional implications over the speaker’s decision to simply temporary step down until he decides when he is better. And it is also now apparent that the public behaviour of a politician in such high office has also thrown up other problems that need to be addressed.

But Bryan has chosen not to support his colleagues and has made public statements that do not align with the other members of the opposition. The opposition said the decision by Bryan is “an obstruction to the opposition’s ability to do one aspect of its job, to ensure that the integrity of the People’s House remains intact. By blocking the opposition’s ability to request a special meeting, the country is deprived of the opportunity to hear from the very people they elected to represent them.”

The conduct of the speaker, his admissions about his impairment, the unilateral grant of leave to him by the premier which may not be constitutional, the need to address the behaviour of members, and what the public should expect from their representatives all need to be discussed, the opposition has said.

Given that this is not the first time the Speaker has caused embarrassment to the country, the opposition members said this latest incident is a tipping point for the people, who are incensed with the double standard that appears to be afforded to those in power.

“If the government is comfortable leaving the public with this view, we, as opposition, certainly are not,” the remaining opposition members stated, as they called for the parliament to meet.

Bryan has claimed that his decision not to support the call for a special meeting of the LA, even to just debate the situation, is because he believes it is premature. Bryan said the members should be waiting for evidence from the police that the speaker did something wrong.

However, the speaker has apologised for his behaviour, admitted he lashed out at those who tried to assist him, and revealed that he is dealing with alcohol problems.

Nevertheless, Bryan made further efforts to justify his position on Rooster’s morning talk show, Crosstalk, on Thursday, when he claimed he was not opposing the idea of a meeting but he felt that without police evidence, members should wait.

However, regardless of whether or not the incident results in criminal charges, the speaker himself has clearly admitted that he behaved, at the very least, extremely unpleasantly in a public place, which many believe is sufficient for him to resign, and if he will not do so willingly, MLAs should be given the chance to impress upon him the need to do so.

The issue was summed up succinctly by long-time advocate for women’s rights and a campaigner against gender based violence, Carolina Ferreira, when she called into the show. She asked Bryan if he believed the only standard for removal from office for those holding prestigious positions is some kind of criminal charge, and short of that, by implication, anything goes. But Bryan struggled to give a meaningful response.

The George Town Central MLA appears to be standing his ground and is therefore quite clearly now poles apart from the position taken by his colleagues on the opposition benches.

Opposition MLA Chris Saunders (BTW) highlighted why this does not need to rise to the level of a criminal charge for the speaker to resign and why he was calling for his resignation. He recalled how his mother started her career as a waitress at the then Royal Palm Hotel.

“For many years she had to shrug off abuse from drunken patrons because she had five children to feed and educate,” he said. “For me to stay silent and not to speak up for women in particular but all hospitality workers in general knowing the sacrifices my mother made on behalf of my sisters and I, would be a betrayal to my mother, my conscience and my constituents who value the role of women in our society,” he added.

CNS reached out to Bryan for comment and we are awaiting a response.

You know what, I’ve determined that they are all a crock of sh*t! I listened to Kenneth on Rooster yesterday and one thing he said stands out significantly. He pointed out that 7 opposition members were not needed, just 7 of them from either side. Kenneth deserves the heat he’s getting, and I do not agree with his stand at all. It just really baffles me that none of the women on the PPM dick riding team, stood up, or said a word publicly in support of the injured lady. None of them, man or woman from the other side did the right thing. They need to catch heat too for being spineless and outright useless. Opposition team, you tried but were still too late with your attempt. Throw the whole LA away. smdh

More overtly, there doesn’t appear to be a Speaker, or Deputy Speaker, and nobody besides Ezzard seems to mention that’s a problem. It illustrates how little respect there is for the purported function of these positions and the integrity of House procedure. We can clearly see these are nothing more than window-dressing positions now.

Yes a shake up is needed. I for one think it is time. The current LA members are truly not the most accurate representation of the people of the Cayman Islands.Shame! Shame!!! My final comments:

    1. Why are the ladies of The House so passive in speaking up against such a matter?

    2. Where is Anthony Eden now that the country needs your public outcry? Why are you not Bible thumping down on this matter?

    3. ….Saunders your story is no different from many of us yet it took the outcry of the public for you to make your stands public.

    4. The current LA members are setting a poor example for the current young people of the country and those to come. Yet they will be the first to throw them under the bus.

    5. As the saying goes ” Action Speaks Louder Than Words” – Come together and do us a favour and agree to change the term limit of representation. Too many of you are fossils and have truly done very little for your constituents and the country as a whole and needs to go. A maximum of 2 terms is more than enough for representatives, who do absolutely nothing, to collect a salary that is undeserving.

    6. People of this country we tend to have short memories. By the time 2021 comes around, too many of us would be on to the next fight and still forget that the ball is in our court.

    7. We must clean house the next election if we are to hold on to this country and everthing it means to us.

The reason the ladies of the House are passive is because McKeeva has a number of political IOU’s which he is now cashing in with them. McKeeva has political IOU’s at all levels and that is the reason no charges have been laid.

An excellent example of raw political power.

What are you talking about. There was a time everyone assessed what happened, then they spoke out unitedly. What? Are you suggesting as soon as they see wrongful behavior they must bark to suffice your intelligence? All MLA’s that remained silent to the public and then took the opportune time to condemn McKeeva, are justified for what they did.

This is WIDER than female abuse. It is simply WORKPLACE ABUSE. Many other types of Workplace Abuses takes place in Cayman, in Social, Entertainment, Business and other Workplaces, which cause emotional and physical harm.

Granted that in this and most cases, females are in the higest percentage of victims, males/females sustain verbal, overwork, poor working conditions,

Harrassment: (Actions or Comments that a worker finds offensive. (Like MLA BTW mother). This worker doesn’t have to be the target but hear or witness the behaviour. (All or most who witmesses the latest abuse were in some way emotiinally impacted).

Discrimination: Treating workers unfairly on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age, social status etc..

Unfair action include harrassment, retaliation, denying employment and promotion opportunities and making decisions and policies which give customers/clients/patrons the ALWAYS RIGHT permission to humiliate staff.

Bullying, immigration/workpermit threats, etc are other forms of abuses.

These abuses can lead to Emotional effect such as depression, loss of self-confidence, anxiety and feeling of helplessness.

Some Physical effects are high blood pressure, headaches, ulcers, weight loss, sleeplessness and others.

Social impact : Lower productivity, poor performace, withdrawal from colleagues and other anti-social behaviours.

This situation with Hon Mac should highlight once and for all many similar Workplace issues in Cayman. The Govt, Opposition, Chamber of Commerce need to look at the Labour Law and see where it needs strengthening. Workers need to be protected from these Workplace abuses, that will be dealt with WITHOUT fear of retaliation.

Perpetrators (Owners, Bosses, Businesses, Colleagues and Customers) needs to be held Accountable.

Less talk and more Action across the board. Stop the hidden madness.

Exactly, all I got from Kenneth is that we need to consider the possibility that Keke is a depressed alcoholic, with possible mental illness and no recollection of the events of that night. So how can he (Kenneth) actually hold him accountable when considering these things. McKeeva admitted to assaulting the woman for f@#k’s sake!! Does anything else really matter? He hasn’t even been arrested. I’m a woman and if it were me out there fighting another woman and police are called, I’m sure I’d be arrested. Truth be told, McKeeva has had so many strikes and managed to crawl out unscathed. Can’t help but think the same thing will happen again. Cayman is not a real place.

If anyone know a little about politics is a GAME of wheeling and dealing! Remember now, Ken Ken has a lot of repair work in his constituency and he has to deliver.

In my opinion, Arden McLean, Joey Hew, Moses Kirkconnell, Tara Rivers and Juliana O’Connor-Connolly are not viable solutions as the next Premier of the Cayman Islands in 2021.

There are many qualified Caymanians who could serve as MLA’s and provide quality leadership for our country going forward. Hopefully they will step forward in 2021 if their personal circumstance allow them to do so.

Any person that cannot or will not condemn unacceptable and boorish behavior or who does not understand the difference between right vs wrong or has spent energy misrepresenting the facts and lying to the public should not be voted into office as a representative of the people. Cayman deserves better.

We have the power as voters to break the cycle of electing career politicians and 2 term politicians that are desperate for a highly paid job, power & pursuit of vanity projects at all costs which does not help the majority and fails to address the pressing priorities of the country.

Any politician that has demonstrated their focus is protecting or working for special interests and their political financiers, families and friends should NOT be given the privilege of being elected in 2021.

Where is the proof that he was kicked, if he was it probably was in defense of the lady he was beating up. I would have kicked him too! Where is the doctors report that his drink was spiked? all lies and Kenneth is helping him spread it. He was scurried away from the scene of the crime until he could concoct his anancy stories. Birds of a feather flock together.

On Rooster this morning he had the gaul to claim that one of the reasons he was holding off supporting the motion is that he “heard” there were 3 women attacking the “honourable speaker”.

Can’t make this shit up. Yes we are officially a 3rd world banana republic.

He is a real spin doctor. I heard him say he has 400 GTC voters on his whatsapp group and he asked them what he should do and he said only 20% said that Mac should go.

But he never said how many said that Mac should stay. I guarantee you more people said Mac should go than stay otherwise he would have said XXX percent of the 400 people I surveyed said Mac should stay.

Does Keneth really think we are idiots ? I challenge him to show us how many people said Mac should stay on his little whatsapp survey

So, if 50% +1 of all his constituents voted to remove Mac he would have gone along with the opposition. But they didn’t so he didn’t. That’s the logic no doubt based on the best of Cayman’s democracy at work…………..

You are not GTC. You can stand with him, I don’t. Kennith stopped the possibility of there even being a debate on this subject. This was not a vote to remove the speakers it was a vote to have a debate before having a vote to possible remove him. All Kennith achieved in doing was stopping a discussion under the his belief of standing up for justice.

I seriously doubt that. This idiot is toast at the next election. Hopefully MacAlden promised to appoint him to a lucrative role in exchange for his integrity.

Seriously, Why does he need Police evidence when McKeeva admitted it happened and what he did? Am I missing something here??

Today was the first time, I have seen him squirm and avoid questions. Favors are being returned even he doesn’t want to admit it..SELL OUT!!!!

He admitted to the guilt act but did not admit to the guilty mind as he apparently can’t remember… you need both for a criminal conviction … so Mac will get off yet again …

He should obviously be removed as he doesn’t have the honour or integrity to step down willingly.

What you’re missing is that he’s protecting Mac on Alden’s instruction because he owes them a favour or they’ve agreed to give him something in return. The balderdash about police procedure and “guidance” from his GT voters were 0% of his decision making, they’re just flimsy excuses. I don’t think even he expects anyone to believe that shite. It’s as close to Manipulation of the political process as Mac/ Alden can get without dyeing themselves orange and getting a combover.

You know what makes me so angry is that he couldn’t even give a decent explanation this morning and then told Woody not to allow any calls for an hour to avoid the heat hoping that no one would be listening in the last hour…

I had some hope for him but unfortunately he has learned early about the political favors and doing what it take to get re-elected..Only thing with him is that he stands out like a sore thumb and Alden and Mac will chew him up and spit him out next election, that is, unless the people of GTC don’t do it before…

One minute we are in ‘cahoots’ about the government not following procedures. OFREG, NRA,CIAA, etc….the boy is just trying to explain the right way. What if Mr. Bush is found not guilty and proven (doubts of course) of defending himself….who is going to pay the lawsuit. Better to lead than follow.

defending himself?? You can’t be serious!! Maybe the victim should post the bruises on her neck for you! Disgusting behavior, should not be acceptable, regardless if you’re in a public position of power or not!! SHAME ON YOU!!

What if he is found not guilty? He’s admitted he got blind drunk and attacked a woman that was trying to help him, in public while dozens looked on and filmed it. Is that acceptable behaviour from the Honorable Speaker of the House? Do we need a criminal conviction to answer that question?

Bush found not guilty? The only way that could happen is if he is brought to trial….. and that won’t happen.

Missing the whole point (as is Kenneth) of the reason behind the motion to remove him from Govt. this is not just because of this latest incident, this is the latest of a long list of things Mac has done over the years which has put the CIG in an embarrassing situation. He may not have been charged with them (boy that may can find the loop holes) but at the end of the day this is a man in a position of power who represents our island to the world.

He has admitted to having an alcohol problem along with mental health issues, now don’t get me wrong, not necessarily reason to fire someone from their job, however when you hold a position of power, it should not be allowed. I think the constitution states as such.

Kenneth talked about letting the police do there job and follow due process, if this is the case, why was Mac not arrested on the spot. If that was anyone else they would have been in the back of the car in no time, so why was Mac not? Also if his was in such a delusional state of mind, why was. He not taken to the hospital for treatment and observation….

based on what he knows and all evidence before him….he still would not allow a vote of no confidence.
for that he will now suffer the same fate as mckeeva.
his pathetic weasel word excuses for mac were sickening….
saying how he heard that mac’s drinks were spiked or a number of women attacked mac…. pure nonsense that he kept repeating.
if this is the best of the new young caymanian wave of politicians…then cayman is truly doomed.
