(CNS): The Health Services Authority has issued a short statement to state that patient care was not affected by an IT system outage at the Cayman Islands Hospital. The HSA said it was continuing to deliver its services, despite the hardware failure that has impacted some aspects of its administrative functions. “Connection to the authority’s core clinical systems are fully functional and there should be no negative impact in services to our patients,” the release stated.

CNS has not received any reports of patients being impacted.

HSA CEO Lizzette Yearwood said technical experts were working with the IT staff to prioritise full system restoration as quickly as possible. But email communications were being affected and she apologised for any inconvenience experienced as a result of that.

Anyone wishing to contact the HSA for urgent matters are advised to call 949-8600.

The HSA has also established the following temporary email address for urgent email enquiries:

Heads NEVER roll in the Civil Service as incompetence is the norm.

The incompetence of their IT department has been on display for years. Apparently however, the IT Laddership (tongue in cheek usage) is ‘bulletproof’. A pity because there a a number of IT team members who deserve true leadership and not someone ‘out of office’ whenever they knock.

    SNAFU as usual

The Pharmacy experience at the time of outage was a joke, and patients were treated rather shabbily. There was no backup or manual system in place.

Patients were impacted as additional delays were encountered by patients waiting to see a doctor. I am also very concerned that all of the data collected while the system was down was not done so in a manner that will ensure that everything is correctly and completely entered into the system once it becomes available.

There also needs to be an investigation into the DR and BCP policies and procedures and the related testing with a view to holding leadership accountable for any failures.

How can patient care not be affected when the EMR is unavailable – no previous test results, no med reconciliation and interactions. Come on. Xrays, diagnostic imaging, digital imaging? All would have been affected.

How much did it cost the HSA when they weren’t able to look up whether a person has insurance coverage?

Jon Doe comes in, who is their next of kin?

Suspicious. A hardware failure in this day and age of virtualization should not be so catastrophic.

    Heads should be rolling.

Terrible HSA statement. Sick and tired of people taking other people for fools in Cayman.
