(CNS): CUC and Cayman Islands Fire Service crews battled a dramatic fire near to condos at Lime Tree Bay off the Esterly Tibbetts Highway on Saturday evening after lightning struck a tree, which caught fire and in turn set a utility pole ablaze.

An undisclosed number of CUC customers were without power for a brief period, but in a Facebook post the power provider said some customers were without power until the early morning hours, as they sought to put out the fire and replace the pole.

No matter what the cause, thank you to all of the first responders who came out on a holiday weekend to work on this mess. Even though the fire spoiled a lovely evening, we were all safe at home while these dilligent workers from CUC and Fire Service were out in the dark fixing our problem.

However, I do have one question, as to why this single transformer caused a power outtage for such a large area. From my vantage point, I could see darkness all the way from Lime Tree Bay to Magellion, and from West Bay Road all the way to the North Sound.

I am not a professional in the business of supplying power to the masses, but this seems like a very large are that one transformer would affect. Are there no backup ways of powering things up? I know in other places where I’ve lived there are ways for the electric company to “re-route” the power to decrease the area impacted.

Lightning my ass, this was a consequence of a tree brushing the power lines causing a short and a fire.
But don’t let the truth get in the way of a ‘dramatic’ story.

Actually, the power cut off about 6 times throughout the night. I feel sorry for people who had no power surge protectors!
