Drone found near airport runway

(CNS): The Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands has said a disabled drone was discovered last week within the perimeter of Owen Roberts International Airport very near to the runway. Officials said the operation of a drone so close to arriving and departing aircraft is both illegal and extremely irresponsible. But this is not an isolated incident and the authority said there have been an increasing number of sightings of small unmanned aircraft near to the airport.

It is prohibited to fly any form of unmanned aircraft within three nautical miles of ORIA or Charles Kirkconnell International Airport to protect planes during the critical stages of landing and take-off when a collision with, or the ingestion of, a foreign object has the potential for very serious consequences, the CAA said in a notice about the discovery of the abandoned drone.

For more details on the law and prohibition of drones near the airports and Her Majesty’s Prison Northward see the CNS Notice board.

I wonder if the air traffic controllers at ORIA follow all of the rules for their own drones?

No they don’t…look at past social media posts of a drone belonging to a Senior ATC officer with his drone flying above and around the Control Tower and posting images with private aircraft registrations disclosing what should not be public information for security reasons among other things.

Too much nepotism going on at that Airport I have been reliable told that solutions were offered sometime back to mitigated this potential threat but because certain individuals control of everything that transpires at ORIA and certain palms did not get any hand cream those at the very top management refuse to even look or consider the potential scenario we now see.No worries some big contract will handed or award to some political cronie or fellow compatriot’s company You know how goes around ya????

The government needs to pass and enforce a law that each drone has to be registered so that drones found out of the legal boundaries of the airport can be traced to the owner.

3 miles is a bit too much. How about a half mile? It seems like these islands love draconian punishments.

This is serious so ban them from entering these islands or face the consequences.

You’re an idiot! The government owns drones! Maybe these islands should ban stupid people since that seems to be a problem on these islands.

There is technology that can prevent drones from flying in certain areas. Why has the airport authority not installed this? Further more, most drone will not come off the ground in restricted air space. I think this was a run-away drone. Technology is good but not perfect.

What technology? Are you suggesting there’s powerful wireless jamming tech to use around airports that stops drone operations? It could bring down aircraft you numty!

Punish all for the ignorance of the few? That’s like outlawing driving so there are no more accidents.

This is serious. I hope the CAA and RCIPS authorities take their jobs as seriously noting the make, model, serial number (in the battery compartment) and reviewing the footage on the camera SSD for clues as to the identity of the operator(s). They need to make a very clear and important first example for drone operators in the Cayman Islands, without the redos, or second chances that are far too common. All of these devices should be registered by serial number for law enforcement purposes.

Nobody takes jobs seriously here. There’s no law enforcement in this territory.

They should also look into staff from the Airport flying them and taking photos of the runway from the control tower

You would have to be mentally ill to put the lives of people in danger to satisfy some sick desire to fly a drone near arriving &/or departing aircrafts.

No effort should be spared to track down the owner of the drone and to ensure that they are prosecuted to the full extent possible.

Everyone on this rock who breathes toxic fumes from the Dump has some sort of mental deviations from what is considered normal.
Otherwise they would not send their kids to international school, live in Camana Bay, buy condos in its immediate vicinity and call this toxic wasteland Paradise.

Same as how the developers on this island are so stupid they don’t even know to get planning permission to destroy mangroves. That’s how stupid.

We do not have the most educated professionals here I have noticed.. So I can’t imagine someone that can afford a drone would be all that smart either.
