Tories still lead UK polls on eve of election

(CNS): The night before Britain was set to vote in its third election in four years the leader of the Conservative party, Boris Johnson, remained ahead in the opinion polls, despite a series of gaffes and some serious questions surrounding the Tory under-funding of the National Health Service. But the lead had narrowed considerably, leaving the possibility of another hung parliament as the changing landscape of UK politics leaves the result as uncertain as ever.

With a surge in registration of younger voters, tactical voting, split party loyalties over Brexit and considerable uncertainty over the potential turnout, the result is really anyone’s guess.

Here in Cayman, there is no doubt that the government is quietly hoping that Johnson will remain in Number 10 Downing Street, and Lord Ahmad keeps his job as the overseas territories minister. Despite Johnson’s ability to insult and upset everyone and anyone and his proven challenges with the truth, the Tory leader is still seen as a more favorable choice here rather than his opponent.

A Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn, or even a coalition of progressive parties, could rattle nerves in Cayman over what type of impositions could come from London regarding the financial services sector, in particular. Corbyn and a number of Labour leaders have made it clear that they will be targeting tax havens in the hope of recovering what they believe are the corporate taxes that have not been paid to HM Treasury but instead stashed offshore.

Corbyn also said in a comedy election video, where he reads ‘mean tweets’, that he believes there is a money tree in the Cayman Islands.

Nevertheless, an outright Labour victory still appears more unlikely than an outright victory for the Conservatives.

But things were not going well late Wednesday for Johnson whose central campaign message has been ‘Get Brexit Done’. A leaked recording of the EU’s chief negotiator made it clear that it was “unrealistic” to conclude trade talks with the UK by the end of 2021.

I guess CAYMANIAN INDEPENDENCE rhetoric don’t look so bad after all. If UK can break from EU, why can’t Cayman from UK? 🤔

Lol. Almost as much fun as watching Trump win. There’s still hope for Britain and the US.

UK elections just closed with exit polls showing a Tory landslide.

I’ve been exchanging emails with friends in the UK all day and if that is true there are probably three reasons for it –

    1. Nobody trusts Corbyn. One of the emails was from a life-long Labour supporter who voted Tory because of his policies.

    2. Nicola Sturgeon (aka Wee Jimmy Krankie) head of the SNP. The idea of her forming a coalition government with Corbyn is, to quote one email, ‘Too scary to think about!’

    3. Lib-Dem leader Jo Swinson. I can’t post the comment that was sent to me by someone who goes back with the Liberals to the days of the old Lib-Lab pact but he wasn’t exactly complimentary.

Bluntly, BoJo is hardly an ideal Prime Minister but compared with the alternatives he’s probably the only choice.

Interestingly, while this is all going on the Israelis are getting set to go to the polls for the third time in a year. I was working out there in 1996 when Netanyahu first became Prime Minister. There was a joke going round – In the USA they have George Bush, Bob Hope, Johnny Cash and Stevie Wonder. In Israel we have Netanyahu, no hope, no cash, no wonder! Despite that he’s hung on pretty well.

Be interesting to see what happens in politics in the next few months because it looks like Trump is on the way out and here Alden is holding onto power by his proverbial fingertips.

“Trump is on his way out” …you really believe that? Do you remember the last time we all doubted him winning- what happened?

Have you been following the democratic debates, the silly impeachment effort, the success of the recent economy (and the benefit to these islands) including labour stats? Your take was going so well then you uttered such an out of touch comment . Like him or not and he can be hard to appreciate, but he is going to be voted in by a landslide in 2020.

I hope they stay in. Because Labour will enforced rediculous same-sex laws on the Cayman Islands in a heart beat! Right now we have a Governor who is all talk. But if Labour gets in, who is to know, may be the next dictator.

What about Wales? We’re the only part of the UK to have our language guaranteed by law and our flag does not form part of the Union Flag. You call me English and that’s fighting talk.

Yes, what about Wales? Don’t make the Anglo-Saxons invade and subdue you again. Once every 2000 years is often enough. There are no guarantees the next ttime.

Wales is unique. They get on a per capita basis the largest subsidies within the U.K. and the more interesting fact is they have received more money in EU subsidies than any other part of the EU.

A new country in 2021 known as England & Wales like Trinidad & Tobago. Poll after poll in Wales show that they want to leave the EU unlike Scotland and Northern Ireland who want to remain in the EU.

@V I’d say the English would be very glad to lose Scotland because independence would mean no more Scottish MPs in the UK Parliament. Scotland has produced some of the worst politicians in history (Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are two obvious examples) and in recent years they’ve dominated (or tried to dominate) UK politics.
